This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

Everyone knows who Batman is (unless you happen to live in Gotham City, then it might take a while) so here's my tribute to the Dark Knight's first big cinematic adventures since the 1960s Adam West camp-fest. Most of us were skeptical about a Michael Keaton/Tim Burton collaboration. We were expecting something ridiculous...Beetleman?!? Batjuice?!? To our surprise, 1989's Batman delivered, thanks in no small part to Jack Nicholson's even battier Joker. We then got a bonkers sequel, Batman Returns, with Christopher Walken in a supporting role that basically steals the show. Of course, I'm a bit biased and maintain that Walken steals every show. Even mine. This POD. CAST. So put on your BatBeats or whatever sort of headphones are handy and have a listen, you'll see who the real "joker" is.Go with a smile!
Peter Jackson's outrageously gory 1992 splatter comedy "Dead Alive" surprised us all with its impressive 89% Rotten Tomatoes score. While we initially struggled through the slow-paced first twenty minutes, the film quickly transforms into a wild, blood-soaked roller coaster that had us simultaneously laughing and gagging."Dead Alive" follows timid Lionel, whose controlling mother gets bitten by a Sumatran rat monkey at the zoo, turning her into a rapidly decomposing zombie who infects everyone she encounters. What follows is perhaps the goriest film ever made, featuring memorable scenes like a kung-fu priest who "kicks ass for the Lord," a zombie baby that becomes a twisted comedy device, and the legendary lawnmower sequence that pumped fake blood at five gallons per second. We dive deep into what makes this film a cult classic, from its quotable one-liners ("Your mother ate my dog!" "Not all of it...") to its practical effects that still hold up remarkably well today. The film's excessive gore - using an estimated 300 liters of fake blood in the final scene alone - established it as the benchmark for splatter films and showcased Peter Jackson's creative vision long before his Lord of the Rings success.Despite some dated elements that don't quite hold up (particularly stereotypical characters and an unnecessarily slow opening), we all agreed "Dead Alive" deserves its place in horror history. Whether you're a fan of splatter films like "Reanimator" and "Evil Dead" or just curious to see where Peter Jackson began his film-making journey, this blood-drenched zombie comedy delivers a uniquely entertaining experience that's worth seeking out. Check out our full breakdown and discover why this New Zealand cult classic outperformed Batman Returns on its home turf back in 1992. Griffin Newman returns! And this time he's brought with him the Bat, the Cat, the Penguin, and….Shreck? Yes, we've got THE TICK's Arthur to talk all things superhero movies, performing in costume, transitioning from comedian to action hero, and why there will never be a better Bruce Wayne than Michael Keaton. Also, we gush about how truly reprehensible and brilliant Danny DeVito is in this film! He stayed in character throughout the entire production! Demented!Join the conversation on our Discord at https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx and get more Eye of the Duck on our Patreon show, After Hours https://www.patreon.com/EyeoftheDuckPodReferences:Special FeaturesThe Bat, the Cat, and the PenguinShadows of the Bat: The Cinematic Saga of the Dark Knight Part 4Making-up the PenguinAssembling the Arctic ArmyBats, Mattes, and Dark Knights: The Visual Effects of Batman ReturnsInside the Elfman Studios: The Music of Batman ReturnsFangoria #160 Production HistoryCinefantastique Vol 22 No 2 (Oct 1991) Production HistoryCinefantastique Vol 23 No 1 (Aug 1992) Production HistoryCinefantastique Vol 23 No 2-3 (Oct 1992) Production HistoryBurton on Burton by Mark SalisburyCinefex #51 Production HistoryThe Hollywood Reporter Production HistoryStan Winston Penguin SFX BreakdownStan Winston Army of Penguins SFX BreakdownMarlon Wayans Cast (Then Cut) as RobinSean Young on Playing Catwoman NowTim Burton on Returning to the FranchiseMoney Into Light Daniel Waters InterviewASC Cinematography BreakdownEmpire Danny Elfman InterviewAFI Production HistoryDaniel Waters on Batman (1989)We Are Cult Production History“Batman 2” by Sam HammCredits:Eye of the Duck is created, hosted, and produced by Dom Nero and Adam Volerich. This episode was edited by Michael Gaspari. This episode was researched by Parth Marathe. Our logo was designed by Francesca Volerich. Hardware (1990), Death Machine (1994), and Event Horizon (1997) The 1990s are often thought of as a decade of dread for horror fans—not because of what was on the screen, but because nothing good supposedly came out of it. Or at least, that's the typical response. But as we continue down the path to Discover the Horror, we're starting to realize that what we remember about the past isn't always accurate—whether it's based on our own memories or what we were told. When you really dig into those ten years, there's actually a lot of great stuff that came out—even just here in the U.S. And when you look beyond to international horror, it gets even better. Browse through the list and you're bound to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.” In this episode, we decided to tackle that decade and picked three titles that, as it turns out, share some very similar themes. And we think all three are well worth watching. Films mentioned in this episode: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Batman Returns (1992), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Boneyard (1991), Braindead (1992), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Candyman (1992), Cronos (1992), Day of the Dead (1985), Death Machine (1994), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Descent (2005), Dr. Giggles (1992), Dust Devil (1992), Event Horizon (1997), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Freeway (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Godzilla (1998), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 (1998), Hardware (1990), Hellraiser (1987), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), High Tension (2003), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Judge Dredd (1995), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of Illusion (1995), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mimic (1997), Misery (1990), The Mummy (1999), Nightbreed (1990), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Princess Bride (1987), Reign of Fire (2002), The Resurrected (1991), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Return to Splatter Farm (2020), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Star Wars (1977), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Thing (1982), Valentine (2001), Warning Sign (1985), Willow (1988)

The cat. The bat. The bird. Yes, 1992's Batman Returns was stuffed to the gills with iconic characters. Danny DeVito's Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman took center stage while Michael Keaton's caped crusader basically drove around and posed a lot. Hardly mattered. Audiences flocked to see this sex-charged sequel. But now, decades later, is this dimly lit superhero hit too dark? Is the Penguin too gross? And is Catwoman too horny for this PG-13 flick? The Old Roommates throw on some black latex and revisit it all through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. We want a sequel! In this episode, psychotherapist and CIIS Assistant Professor in the Integral Counseling Psychology program Emily Marinelli is joined by therapist and activist DDS Dobson-Smith for a conversation exploring the psychology of movie sequels from the 1980s and 1990s. * Sharing personal stories and insights from their latest book Comfort Sequels, Emily dives deep into the psychology behind what makes certain movie sequels memorable, safe, predictable, and comforting. These sequels are more of the universe we love—exploring something new while maintaining something familiar. Emily interprets characters, story arcs, and major themes while sharing fun and random behind-the-scenes facts about sequels including Grease 2, Gremlins 2, My Girl 2, Ghostbusters II, Batman Returns and more. * This episode was recorded during an in-person and live streamed event at California Institute of Integral Studies on August 21st, 2024. Our hosts return for a new year of podcasting and sit down to review the episode, BLIND AS A BAT. Alex and Will discuss how Batman is more like a combination of Iron Man and Daredevil, using his senses and tech to save the day! They also notice the many nods to Batman 89 and Batman Returns in this episode, and take note that this is the last appearance of the Penguin in BTAS. Our hosts imagine Alfred playing many practical jokes on Bruce Wayne whilst he can't see. Why flying the Bat Wing blind is insane, and how Batman took Penguin to jail with no sight and no vehicle. Tim Burton directed "Batman Returns", the sequel to the first Batman film of the iconic franchise that came out of a comic book created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. This sequel had an all-star cast that included Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer who played a great Catwoman. I think "Batman Returns" is an okay film by critical point of view but I sure enjoyed the hell of the it. It is fun to watch due to its entertainment value. It has action, some type of drama when it comes to local politics of a city, romance stemming between Bruce Wayne/Batman and Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and the villain. You gotta have a villain that stands out and Tim Burton's version of Penguin. The design of the Penguin is forever iconic, but how DeVito brings this type of character out. You almost want to root for him and we do actually! We are amused and intrigued as what his goal in this film beside being a mayor. It's a film that's easy to enjoy and part of the reason is not Tim Burton's vision, but the one-liners that almost every character possesses. I'd say, half the time, it works! You really have to see the film to be embraced by the corny-ness of it all. Apart from that, I do like Burton's version of a gothic, dirty Gotham City, where you never seen the sun, lights blind the viewer, and technology seems to be lost in time. I do like cinematography, Burton made great decisions of what kind of shots we should see. A lot of them feel as if they did come from a comic book page. Every shot is different, proposing its purpose. I like the use of blue in the film, especially to mimic moonlight. What's great of the film is how these actors play these characters and play them respectfully toward the screenplay. The way Burton displays the interaction of Batman and Catwoman in the action and dramatic scenes are almost a masterclass of it's own. We honestly forget that we are watching two people dressed in costume. We forget their masks and false identities and realize underneath that are hungry human beings trying fill personal voids and Burton did a great job creating that.three out of four tokes.#batmanreturns #timburton

Melinda Mock and Michael French of RetroBlasting fame answered our bat signal at the eleventh hour to join us for this special festive episode after our original guest had to drop out. And boy, are we glad they did! Yes, it's a bit cheeky of us to cover Tim Burton's snowy sequel to his blockbusting hit Batman (1989) on Movie Oubliette. It's dubious to claim it has been overlooked in the years since, but it was certainly a box office disappointment for Warner Bros. when it debuted in 1992. Adjusted for inflation, it earned $420 million less than the original, and is the second-lowest-grossing live action Batman movie, beaten only by Batman and Robin. But is this dark and kinky sequel, in which Batman appears for only 23 minutes, a freaky festive classic? Or a gloomy gothic mess? Follow us on Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky. We're heading into the holiday season, and with that always comes a couple of things: travel and holiday movies. Because of the first thing, we're diving into the second thing. We've got another “film festival” of movies set during the holiday season, but may not be considered holiday movies. First up, the second Tim Burton Batman film, “Batman Returns,” starring Micheal Keaton. Does it hold up? Was it ever good? What's the weirdest costume and the best performance?
