Like many Americans, the 2008 financial crisis left Anat Admati furious. A professor at Stanford, she became one of the country's leading voices calling attention to how confusion, complexity and misleading claims allowed major banks to load up on dangerous amounts of debt. Today, she argues that little has changed. In this conversation, we discuss the faulty arguments bankers use to fight oversight, how corporate power has expanded in the years since the crisis, and what can be done to create a fairer and more stable economy.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Lawmakers to View Unredacted Epstein Files. Hegseth vs The Boy Scouts and Harvard. JD Vance Booed at Olympics. US Olympians Speak Out Against ICE. Super Bowl Monday Should be a National Holiday.  It's Super Bowl Monday and Independent Americans host Paul Rieckhoff is unpacking a wild 24 hours in America—from a politically charged halftime show and Seattle's gritty win to dangerous ICE raids, new 9/11 revelations, and the most political Olympics yet. Every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) breaks down the most important news stories and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans in a time when trusted news, politics, inspiration, and hope are in short supply. In this all‑new solo “Manosphere Monday” episode, Paul ties together Bad Bunny's historic halftime performance and its “the only thing more powerful than hate is love” message, Trump-world backlash, and the NFL's bet on Latino and Puerto Rican culture as a preview of America's demographic future. He launches “Manosphere Monday” with real talk on male leadership, raising boys, and men's health—spotlighting prostate screenings via that unforgettable “Relax Your Tight End” Novartis ad. Along the way he exposes chilling ICE abuses, honors murdered Minneapolis VA hero Alex Preti, and reveals a newly surfaced 9/11 memo showing New York City officials quietly worried about toxic air and legal liability while first responders and residents were told it was safe. Paul also tracks Trump's war on the free press, Pentagon stonewalling, Pete Hegseth's escalating culture war against the Boy Scouts and Harvard, JD Vance getting booed at the Olympics, and why Ukraine's athletes are now the spiritual center of the Games. He highlights the growing movement for open primaries, new polling showing Americans are fed up with partisan primaries, and why veterans and independents are leading the charge to reclaim our democracy—before closing with some sports hope in college hoops, March Madness, and his surging St. John's Johnnies. If you're exhausted by partisan spin, corporate media, and performative “manosphere” grifters, this is your alternative, independent briefing on Super Bowl Monday—packed with politics, culture, sports, and honest conversation about health, masculinity, and American leadership. Because every episode of Independent Americans with Paul Rieckhoff breaks down the most important news stories--and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. In these trying times especially, Independent Americans is your trusted place for independent news, politics, inspiration and hope. What happens when exploration gives way to administration - and adventure turns into power? How did a royal garden become the beating heart of a global botanical empire? And how did Joseph Banks, without leaving London, reshape landscapes, economies, and diets across the world? In this episode, John and Patrick move from the drama of ocean voyages to the quieter - but far more consequential - world of Kew Gardens, where Banks transforms botany into infrastructure, plants into policy, and seeds into instruments of empire. From globe-spanning networks of plant hunters to glasshouses, diplomacy, and even Britain's first brush with cannabis, this is where Banks stops collecting plants - and starts running the system.----------In Sponsorship with Cornell University: Dyson Cornell SC Johnson College of Business-----------Join the History of Fresh Produce Club for ad-free listening, bonus episodes, book discounts and access to an exclusive chatroom community.Support us!Share this episode with your friendsGive a 5-star ratingWrite a review-----------Subscribe to our biweekly newsletter here for extra stories related to recent episodes, book recommendations, a sneak peek of upcoming episodes and more.-----------Instagram, TikTok, Threads:@historyoffreshproduceEmail: historyoffreshproduce@gmail.com

In this Jewish Inspiration Podcast episode (Day 124), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues the Gate of Truth (Sha'ar HaEmes) from Orchos Tzaddikim, exploring truth as the essence of God, prayer, and the heart. Key points:Calling upon Hashem in truth (Psalms 145:18) — Free the heart from worldly distractions; cleave intellect and mind solely to Hashem with constant yearning. In crisis, the first thought is “Hashem, help me”—aligning fully with God.Hisbodedus (seclusion) — Pious people seclude themselves (e.g., in a room) to connect deeply with Hashem, avoiding worldly bonds except for necessities. Avoid prayer focused only on personal needs/money/honor—that's not true avodah (service).Daily prayer for truth — Recite “V'taher libeinu l'avdecha be'emes” (purify our hearts to serve You in truth)—ensure all service is authentic, not for people, money, or ego.Return to Hashem — “Im tashuv ad Shakai tivaneh” (Job 22:23): Return without foreign thoughts separating you from God—rebuild strongly in the radiance of Shechinah.King David's truth — “Hashem, who dwells on Your holy mountain? He who walks perfectly, acts righteously, and speaks truth in his heart” (Psalms 15:1–2)—truth must be implanted in the heart, not just spoken.Early pious sages — Sold items at the heart-fixed price, refusing higher offers; write down commitments to avoid forgetting/violating inner truth.Truth's reward — “You decree a word, and it will be fulfilled for you” (Job 22:28)—truthful people's words/thoughts manifest; their dealings (business, lending) reflect unwavering honesty. The rabbi stresses: in a materialistic world, seclude daily (e.g., 10–30 minutes without devices) for true dveikut (cleaving to God). Prayer is face-to-face with Hashem—prepare with 60 seconds of contemplation. Truth in heart ensures fulfilled words and divine closeness._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 21, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on February 9, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! Share your questions at aw@torchweb.org or visit torchweb.org for more Torah content.  _____________About the Host:Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe, Director of TORCH in Houston, brings decades of Torah scholarship to guide listeners in applying Jewish wisdom to daily life.  To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism. Susan Barry is the founder of Hive Marketing and the host of Top Floor, bringing hotel sales, marketing, and ownership-side perspectives to the mic. In this solo episode, she reintroduces herself to new listeners from Hotel Online and HFTP and zooms out on a timely industry controversy to ask a much bigger question about power, history, and responsibility in hospitality. This episode is short and sweet, much like Susan. How Susan went from English major to hotel exec to founder and podcaster Why "hotels should stay out of politics" is a myth How hotels shape tax, labor, and zoning policy Why hotels are natural hubs for political activity How history proves hotels become power centers in crises How hotels can be tools of refuge or control What the Minnesota ICE controversy really exposes How brand power works in an asset-light hotel model *** Our Top Three Takeaways 1. Hotels are never "apolitical," even when they claim to be. The episode argues that hotels are inherently political because they operate at the intersection of real estate, labor, capital, and public visibility. From lobbying on taxes and visas to hosting political events and managing labor relations, hotels participate in politics constantly—whether or not they acknowledge it. 2. History shows hotels repeatedly become power centers during moments of crisis. Across wars, genocides, and social movements, hotels have functioned as command centers, sanctuaries, negotiation hubs, and tools of control. Examples from World War II, the Rwandan genocide, and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement illustrate how hotel spaces and staff actions can enable resistance, protection, or oppression depending on who holds power. 3. Modern brand–owner dynamics turn "neutral" decisions into political acts. In today's asset-light model, brands wield enormous influence through flags, loyalty systems, and distribution, while owners carry the financial risk. When a brand intervenes or withdraws, it is making an economic and political judgment that can instantly reshape a property, raising hard questions about authority, accountability, and local decision-making. On February 7, 1926, National Negro History Week was first observed. This week, we frame Blackest History Month as a Governance ritual against the coming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, not as celebration but as struggle—over memory, power, and education. Coming from this weekend's “Blackprint 20” Conference in Philadelphia, we trace recurring conflicts from 1776 to 1976 to the present: Social Structure spectacle versus Movement and Memory; the archive versus living intergenerational transmission; and curriculum as Governance protocol beyond simple skill development. White supremacy cannot coexist with African self-determination, equity or any other form of full beingness. Rituals that mark anniversaries must activate memory into action, revealing intellectual warfare over history, schooling, and national identity in a convulsing settler state. Are you a member of Knarrative? Lewis gets vulnerable about his own history with this trap, confessing how fifteen years ago when a hundred dollars was everything to him, he'd walk into casinos with this anxious, desperate energy, terrified of losing but hoping to win. He lost every single time. That scarcity mindset, that playing not to lose instead of playing to win, guaranteed his failure. Vivian breaks down exactly why these prediction markets prey on people in hard economic times; when you're desperate, an eight game parlay starts looking like the answer to all your problems, but it never is.The transformation came when Lewis stopped needing the money and started treating gambling like what it actually is: the cost of admission to a two-hour movie. Three hundred bucks, win or lose, purely for entertainment. Now he plays light and free, and ironically feels like he wins constantly. That's the real lesson buried in this conversation about gambling. Whether you're betting on sports or making financial decisions, operating from desperation and scarcity will destroy you every time. Vivian wants you to understand that gambling operates on the same addictive neural pathways as cigarettes and alcohol, which is why every casino ad has to include that gambling addiction hotline at the bottom. The house always wins, and those billionaires aren't placing bets in prediction markets, they're investing in the gambling companies themselves. If you're going to gamble at all, treat it as pure entertainment with money you've already written off, or better yet, take that money and actually invest it in something that compounds over time instead of evaporating the second you press that bet button.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

John Taylor was a British eye surgeon in the 1700s who, driven by arrogance, fabricated a prestigious reputation. He pursued celebrities and became the personal eye doctor for King George II. Taylor traveled the country performing medical shows that promised miracle cures, often escaping towns under the cover of night carrying bags overflowing with villagers’ cash. However, he was eventually proven to be a charlatan. Records suggest Taylor likely blinded hundreds of patients. History remembers him not as a medical luminary but as the man who destroyed the eyesight of two of the century’s greatest composers: Bach and Händel. Taylor craved reputation and acclaim, but his epitaph declares his lies, and the embarrassment and hurt he caused. Proverbs explains how egotistical addictions lead to devastation. “Before a downfall,” we read, “the heart is haughty” (18:12). Taylor’s disgrace warns us of how arrogance can ruin our lives, but one’s foolishness often harms others too (vv. 6-7). The “downfall” is great indeed. While a proud heart destroys us and others, a humble heart leads toward a life of meaning and joy. “Humility comes before honor,” the proverb says (v. 12). If we selfishly pursue only self-interests (v. 1), we’ll never find what we crave. If we yield our heart to God and serve others, however, we honor Him and reflect His goodness.

Environmental Series. Episode #1 of 4. In 1851, a journalist named Henry Mayhew set out to document the lives of London's working poor. What he found was astonishing. In the richest city in the world, thousands of people made their living by picking through other people's trash. There were the bone-grubbers, who scavenged bones from gutters to sell to soap manufacturers. There were the mudlarks, mostly children, who waded through the filthy banks of the Thames searching for coal, rope, and bits of metal. And then there were the pure-finders. What's “pure” you ask? Well, "pure" was a Victorian euphemism for dog excrement. Pure-finders, mostly elderly women, spent their days scouring the streets of London for dog droppings, which they then sold by the pailful to tanneries in Bermondsey. The tanners used it to purify leather. Hence the name. We tend to think of recycling as a modern invention, something that started with the environmental movement of the 1970s. Blue bins, sorting instructions, that kind of thing. But as brilliant historians have uncovered, the story of how humans have dealt with their discarded materials stretches back millennia. For most of human history, the concept of "throwing something away" barely existed. To begin our series on environmental history, we're tackling the premodern history of recycling. Or as pre-WWII people would have called it: reclamation, salvage, scrapping, repair, and reuse. We'll meet rag-and-bone men and dustmen, shoddy masters and mudlarks. We'll discover how rags became paper, how old wool became new cloth, and how virtually nothing in the premodern world was ever truly waste. In November 1940, the Royal Navy launched one of the most audacious carrier operations of the Second World War—a nighttime air attack on the Italian fleet anchored at Taranto. This episode explores the planning and preparations behind Operation Judgement, examining why Admiral Cunningham and his Mediterranean fleet turned to airpower when traditional fleet engagements proved elusive. From the capabilities of the seemingly obsolete Fairey Swordfish biplane and its torpedoes to the Italian defenses protecting their prized battleships, this episode sets the stage for an attack that would fundamentally shift the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean and foreshadow the future of carrier-based warfare. Welcome to Season 6, Episode 6! We're back with Part 2 on The History of the Patel Motel Phenomenon. If you haven't listed to Part 1 which was S06E04, then we'd love it if you go back and list to that one for more context. In this episode, we continue the history, talking about what the predominantly Gujarati motel and hotel owners did when they were faced with racism from banks, insurance companies, customers, and the professional organizations that were supposed to be fighting for ALL the owners in the lodging industry.  We take time to share about the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) which the Indian American hotel owners created to help lobby on their behalf and create a more level playing. One of most impactful projects was the creation of the 12 Points of Fair Franchising, a document that recently was updated. In our recurring segment we bring you another segment of Racist or Not, where we share a phrase or saying and discuss whether it's racist… or not. Today we're talking about the phrase "It's All Chinese to Me." If you support what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. In this Jewish Inspiration Podcast episode (Day 123), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe begins the Gate of Truth (Sha'ar HaEmes) from Orchos Tzaddikim, emphasizing that truth is the essence of God and the soul. Key teachings:The soul's divine origin — Created from the place of the Holy Spirit (ruach hakodesh) and the celestial radiance of Hashem's throne (Genesis 2:7: “He breathed into his nostrils a living soul”). Above (in the Holy of Holies), there is no falsehood—only truth. “Hashem Elokeinu Emet” (Hashem our God is truth, Jeremiah 10:10).Ehyeh asher Ehyeh — “I will be what I will be” (Exodus 3:14). The word “Ehyeh” (21) appears 21 times in Tanach; 21 × 21 = 441 = gematria of emet (truth). God is absolute truth.Man's purpose — Created straight/upright (yashar) to reflect truth. God's “seal” is truth (Shabbat 55a). Falsehood cannot attach to truth; a truthful person has Hashem's throne suspended above him, protecting him.Practical implications — When one lives in truth, all creation acknowledges Hashem as Creator (Psalms 146: “He guards truth forever”). Falsehood contradicts the godly soul within us—lying creates inner conflict and separation from God.Hashem responds to truth — “Hashem is close to all who call upon Him—in truth” (Psalms 145:18). Only authentic, truthful prayer connects deeply.Modern application — Truth stands forever (emet has legs on aleph, mem, tav—beginning, middle, end); falsehood collapses (sheker has one leg). Purge rationalizations and traits that justify lies to live in alignment with the soul's divine source. The rabbi ties this to daily life: every mitzvah, word, and action should reflect truth, as we carry a piece of God's truth within us._____________This Podcast Series is Generously Underwritten by Peter & Becky BotvinRecorded at TORCH Centre in the Levin Family Studios (B) to a live audience on July 21, 2025, in Houston, Texas.Released as Podcast on February 9, 2026_____________This series on Orchos Tzadikim/Ways of the Righteous is produced in partnership with Hachzek.Join the revolution of daily Mussar study at hachzek.com.We are using the Treasure of Life edition of the Orchos Tzadikkim (Published by Feldheim)_____________Listen, Subscribe & Share: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/jewish-inspiration-podcast-rabbi-aryeh-wolbe/id1476610783Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4r0KfjMzmCNQbiNaZBCSU7) to stay inspired! To directly send your questions, comments, and feedback, please email: awolbe@torchweb.org_____________Support Our Mission:Our Mission is Connecting Jews & Judaism. ou don't have to live forever to matter forever. The question is whether what you're building will outlast you. Show Notes In this episode of Shark Theory, Baylor breaks down the idea of chasing immortality not in a physical sense, but through impact, purpose, and legacy. Using the story of Vincent Van Gogh, Baylor challenges the assumption that success is defined by money, recognition, or validation while you're alive. Van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime, struggled deeply, and died believing he failed. Yet today, his work echoes through history and continues to move the world. The episode confronts a hard question many people avoid. Are you chasing a paycheck, or are you chasing purpose? Are you building something meaningful, or simply going through the motions to satisfy expectations? Baylor explains why passion outlasts profit, why legacy is built through intentional creation, and why doing meaningful work often isn't popular in the moment. History rarely celebrates people who played it safe. It remembers those who created something that mattered. This episode is a reminder to stop living on defense, stop worrying about labels, and start focusing on what you're creating. The world doesn't need more people chasing approval. It needs people brave enough to build something that lasts. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why legacy matters more than recognition The difference between chasing money and chasing purpose What Vincent Van Gogh's life teaches about impact Why meaningful work often isn't rewarded immediately How fear of labels keeps people from creating Why history rewards builders, not pleasers Featured Quote "I'm not chasing a check. I'm chasing something that echoes after I'm gone."

Just three months after Magic Johnson retired from basketball due to his HIV diagnosis, he made a triumphant return on 9th February, 1992 - at the NBA All-Star Game in Orlando, Florida. The sports world was divided—some players, like Michael Jordan, welcomed him back, while others, like Karl Malone, were hesitant, voicing concerns about physical contact on the court. But when Johnson stepped out, fans and fellow players alike cheered him on, and Johnson racked up 25 points, dished out nine assists, and lead the West to a dominant 153-113 victory over the East, becoming named Most Valuable Player. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how Johnson became the face of basketball's golden era; explain why misunderstandings and ignorance about HIV was so widespread; and uncover the career Johnson built beyond basketball... Jesus Was Mocked on the Cross—And So Will You | Matthew 27:33-44The world mocked Jesus as He hung on the cross. "If you're God's son, come down!" they shouted. But here's what they didn't understand: God's vindication doesn't look like the world's vindication. Jesus didn't come down from the cross to prove Himself—He stayed on it. And three days later, the empty tomb said everything. If you're facing mockery for your faith, if you're waiting for God to defend you, or if you're wondering why He isn't showing up the way you expected—this message is for you.In this sermon, we walk through Matthew 27:33-44 and uncover four powerful truths about Christ's crucifixion:TIMESTAMPS: [00:00] Intro - The Most Evil Day in History [02:04] The Crucifixion Begins [06:08] Golgotha: The Place of the Skull [08:19] Jesus Takes Our Place [16:26] Penal Substitutionary Atonement Explained [19:07] Prophecy Fulfilled: Psalm 22 [24:02] The Religious Leaders Mock Jesus [29:18] Moses, Miriam, and God's Vindication [33:42] Worship That Goes Deeper Than "He Loves Me" [35:34] How Jesus Responded to Mockery [36:25] Christianity Isn't About Being Understood [39:06] After the Amen Q&AKEY TAKEAWAYS:Let it humble you - You're the soldier, the mocker, the one who deserved the cross. Yet Jesus died instead of you.Let it fuel authentic worship - When you see Jesus didn't just die for you but instead of you, worship goes infinitely deeper.Respond with steadfast obedience - Like Jesus, you don't need the final word. God will vindicate you.Stop trying to be understood - Christianity isn't about being understood. It's about where you stand in Christ. The resurrection proves God will vindicate His children. You may face mockery now, but one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.CONNECT WITH US:
