In 2023, researcher Daniel Kokotajlo left OpenAI—and risked millions in stock options—to warn the world about the dangerous direction of AI development. Now he's out with AI 2027, a forecast of where that direction might take us in the very near future. AI 2027 predicts a world where humans lose control over our destiny at the hands of misaligned, super-intelligent AI systems within just the next few years. That may sound like science fiction but when you're living on the upward slope of an exponential curve, science fiction can quickly become all too real. And you don't have to agree with Daniel's specific forecast to recognize that the incentives around AI could take us to a very bad place. We invited Daniel on the show this week to discuss those incentives, how they shape the outcomes he predicts in AI 2027, and what concrete steps we can take today to help prevent those outcomes. #581 Shane Balkowitsch is a dedicated wet plate collodion photographer whose passion for history, authenticity, and the human experience shapes both his artwork and his views on the future of photography. In this episode, Shane shares the journey that led him from having no experience with a camera to mastering one of photography's oldest analog processes—a craft involving silver on glass that dates back to 1851. He highlights how the permanence and tangible nature of wet plate images, created through capturing real light and human presence, starkly contrast with the ephemeral, intangible nature of digital and AI-generated images.KEY TOPICS COVEREDDefining Photography in the Age of AI - Shane and Raymond dissect the core of what makes an image a "photograph," highlighting the necessity of light, a subject, and a photosensitive medium or sensor. They underscore the risk of confusing AI-based image generation—which lacks these elements—with authentic photography, causing potential chaos in art, media, and historical documentation.Ethics, Ownership, and Historical Accuracy - Shane raises significant ethical concerns about AI training on billions of images without permission, including his own work, and questions who owns the resulting visuals. He warns about the dangers this presents to historical accuracy, imagining future scenarios where AI-generated portraits of people who never existed could mislead researchers or the public, blurring the line between fact and fiction.Terminology, Transparency, and the Future of Art - Shane advocates for distinct labeling of AI-generated imagery—suggesting terms like "promptography"—to prevent confusion and uphold the integrity of photography. He stresses the need for transparency so viewers know whether an image is a genuine photograph or an AI creation, believing that honesty and accurate terminology are essential as technology continues to evolve.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSWet Plate Collodion Photography: An early analog photographic process invented in 1851, involving capturing images on glass plates coated with chemicals sensitive to light. Shane's work in this medium exemplifies photography's physical, archival, and intentional qualities.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSWhat makes an image a photograph, and why does this distinction matter when considering AI-generated content?Should AI-generated images be considered art? Recent research by Strata, Ireland's leading provider of construction time management and digital construction services, reveals that 88% of construction and engineering professionals have accelerated their use of digital technologies over the past year. In addition, nearly 70% of respondents are leveraging these tools to drive smarter decision-making and innovation across the sector. Barriers to digital adoption The 2025 Strata Report: Digital Transformation in Construction highlighted that siloed workflows are the leading barrier to digital adoption in the sector. Time constraints ranked second, driven by limited capacity for training and the pressure of industry-wide labour shortages. In third place, skillset gaps point to an urgent need for targeted training and the strategic hiring of new digital capabilities to support transformation. Knowledge of AI The research found that 81% of construction and engineering professionals report only basic or moderate knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, more than 71% of respondents believe AI will be critical in shaping the future of the sector. Despite this strong belief, over half of companies surveyed had yet to implement formal AI training for their teams. Sustainability in sector When asked about the importance of sustainability in the sector, 85% of construction and engineering professionals said it will become more important over the next one to three years. This contrasted with just 5% reporting significant progress in utilising digital tools such as carbon calculations and whole-life assessments. Commenting on the findings, Enda Grimes, Director and Founder of Strata said: "With the Government's National Planning Framework prioritising accelerated housing delivery, and the Climate Action Plan placing new demands on infrastructure and sustainability targets, meeting construction demand will require greater efficiency and new ways of working. In this context, digitalisation and AI are no longer optional efficiency tools - they are essential levers for delivering on national ambitions." "Our research shows that while digital adoption is gaining momentum across the sector, a significant gap in skills and applied knowledge remains in our industry. Addressing this challenge requires collaboration with digital experts who not only bring strong digital capability, but also understand the practical complexities of engineering and construction. As Ireland's population continues to grow, the need to improve our infrastructure becomes more urgent. By combining deep engineering expertise with digital innovation, we can accelerate delivery and build the resilient infrastructure we need." Over 250 construction and engineering professionals, representing over 170 individual companies in Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe took part in the Strata survey in the second quarter of 2025. Moreover, the competitive edge AI offers through refining dealership operations and marketing strategies cannot be understated. As affirmed, "AI makes the entire journey from research to purchase more efficient, personalized, and user friendly" (Knight ChatGPT, [0:07:47]). Empowering Dealerships and Sales Professionals The integration of AI into dealership operations provides tangible benefits for both managers and sales professionals. The transcript emphasizes how tools like ChatGPT can enhance customer interactions through streamlined communications and personalized engagement. For instance, crafting custom e-mail scripts and voicemail message scripts tailored to specific customer needs leads to higher conversion rates. In the words of Knight, "By integrating ChatGPT…dealerships can offer a more personalized, efficient and proactive customer experience," setting themselves apart from competitors (Knight ChatGPT, [0:13:09]). Beyond communication capabilities, AI-driven analytics allows for understanding and predicting consumer behavior, optimizing inventory management, and creating targeted marketing campaigns. This precision enables sales teams to tailor their strategies closely to customer demands, as detailed when discussing CRM capabilities. "AI helps dealerships and their teams do more with less effort, ultimately driving growth and improving the customer experience" (Knight ChatGPT, [0:10:12]). AI's role in sales training is another vital aspect of empowering automotive professionals. The potential for continuous improvement through real-time feedback and data analysis enables salespeople to hone their skills and stay competitive in a fast-evolving market. Building a Robust Referral Network One of the most compelling discussions in the transcript revolves around using AI to build a network of referral agents. By effectively communicating and creating partnerships with individuals in various industries, sales professionals can amplify their reach and lead generation efforts. ChatGPT's ability to craft personalized messages and guide referral programs highlights how AI can facilitate these relationships. Sean comments, "Leveraging ChatGPT to build a network of referral agents can make a huge difference" (Knight ChatGPT, [0:23:55]). The strategic advantage of employing referral networks lies in their ability to reach untapped markets and cultivate trustworthy leads. As Knight outlines, using ChatGPT to establish structured referral incentives and maintain regular engagement with agents creates a robust system for generating high-quality referrals. Importantly, training these referral partners ensures they are effective extensions of the dealership. ChatGPT can assist in creating educational materials and communication guidelines to ensure referral agents are well-equipped to promote the dealership and its offerings. Revolutionizing Traditional Dealership Models Through AI The ongoing digital transformation in the automotive industry is massively supported by AI advancements like ChatGPT. This technology enables dealerships to leverage innovative solutions to longstanding industry challenges, from optimizing internal operations to enhancing consumer relationships. The dialogue in the podcast exemplifies how AI integration translates into tangible business improvements, from micro-level sales tactics to macro-level market strategies. The potential to blend data-driven decision-making processes with empathetic customer interactions transforms the industry paradigm. By embracing AI media solutions like DealerSynergy AI, dealerships unlock new avenues of engagement, ensuring a tailored, memorable customer experience, as Tiana Mick points out, "And the best thing about it is that you just record it once…the possibilities are endless" (Tianna Mick, [0:43:43]). In embracing and advancing AI use, the automotive industry is poised for a powerful transformation. As underscored in the transcript, leveraging technology like ChatGPT will not only lead to more significant sales and profitability but will ensure that dealerships build enduring customer relationships and deepen their impact on the market landscape. Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com Artificial Intelligence can dazzle people to the point where they lose focus on the objectives of the federal agency. In today's interview, Adam Lurie from Knexus begins by discussing a corporate strategy that combines research and innovation with engineering. This approach has been consistent over decades of serving the federal government. One stellar example of this fusion was their success in the $919 million 10-year Supply Chain Risk Illumination Professional Tools and Services (SCRIPTS) Blanket Purchase Agreement from the GSA. One of the challenges in “applied” AI is the data itself. Often, particularly in the federal government, there are strict rules governing the handling of data. We have all heard about the encryption of data at rest and data in transit. Given this limitation, it may be challenging to establish an iterative process that optimizes security and reliability. The answer from Knexus is to use synthetic data to emulate an actual sensitive federal data set. That way, several methods can be used to rapidly identify foreign influence, monitor vendor integrity, and visualize complex risk management scenarios. This innovation enables developers to optimize the security of a supply chain, taking into account variations that incorporate modern technologies and adapt to emerging threats. A key partner in this creative approach is Google. Knexus was recently named 2025's Google Cloud Business Application Partner of the Year for Government. Retaining security while innovating will be the key to applying AI to solve federal business needs now and in the future.
