Episode Summary: Most people know the three classic stress responses—fight, flight, and freeze—but there's a fourth that's often missed because it hides in plain sight: the fawn response. This is when your nervous system decides the safest way to handle a threat is to please or appease it. It's not weakness—it's a deeply ingrained survival strategy that can run for years without you realizing it.In this episode, Molly explains what the fawn response is, where it comes from, why you may never have heard of it, and how it might be shaping your relationships, boundaries, and even your drinking choices. You'll learn how to spot the signs of fawning and take the first steps toward responding from authenticity rather than fear. What You'll Learn in This Episode:A quick refresher on fight, flight, and freeze—and how they compare to fawn.Pete Walker's definition of the fawn response and how it forms.Everyday examples of fawning and why it's often praised instead of questioned.Common childhood environments that lead to fawning. Why the fawn response is both common and invisible. How the fawn pattern can influence your drinking decisions.A simple, four-step process to pause and respond intentionally instead of automatically.Key Quote:“The child relinquishes the fight response, deletes ‘no' from her vocabulary… flight exacerbates the danger… freeze doesn't protect… so the child learns to fawn her way into the relative safety of becoming helpful.” – Pete WalkerLinks and Resources:Pete Walker's work on the Four F's of Trauma: pete-walker.comJoin the free Alcohol Minimalist Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/alcoholminimalistsLearn more about “Making Peace with Alcohol” coaching: www.mollywatts.com/workwithmeListener Challenge: Notice one moment this week where you have the urge to please or accommodate someone else at your own expense. There's an architecture to dysfunction. It starts with broken beliefs about who you are, and it becomes lifestyle chaos. This week, Ed Latimore joins me to dismantle that architecture from the inside out. A former heavyweight boxer turned Stoic philosopher, physicist, and master of emotional discipline, Ed knows what happens when discipline outruns self-awareness and toughness becomes armor, not healing. We go deep on how distorted thinking drives destructive behavior; how emotional regulation isn't about feeling control—it's predictive science; and why optimism without realism becomes denial. This episode is a surgical blueprint for rethinking how you think, feel, and engage with life's stress. If you're tired of overthinking, overdoing, and still not seeing change, listen closely. Because transformation begins the moment you question what you're telling yourself about your own strength, your pain, and your beliefs. You've probably heard the phrase “don't sweat the small stuff.” Well, I'm here to tell you to do the exact opposite. If you want to perform at the highest level, if you want to grow in your role, get promoted, or become a standout in your field, you better sweat the small stuff.  Because that's where mastery lives.  This week, I'm sharing one of the most important performance lessons I can give you.  Whether I'm talking about writing emails, managing a team, speaking with clients, or building a long-term financial future, the people who succeed are the ones who obsess (productively) over the right things.  In this talk, I'll walk you through: Why greatness lives in the details (with stories to prove it). How top performers think differently about their craft. A powerful health and wealth analogy that might just change how you approach your career. You'll come away with a better approach for how to improve your day-to-day work and make long-term progress in your profession and finances.  Just 8:46 and one of the best mental models I've shared…  If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. Send one way text to Rev Rachel In this week's episode, I sit with a heartfelt question from our community—how do we hold someone accountable without slipping into control and codependence?—and we look honestly at what true support really is, including whether asking a spouse to “prove” sobriety crosses a line; from a Soul Recovery perspective, we remember that we are powerless over other people and powerful within ourselves, so instead of policing or shaming, we practice loving detachment, clear boundaries, and compassionate curiosity—asking, “What would truly support you?” while staying anchored in our own healing. The hard truth is we cannot make anyone recover, and when we try to manage their journey it often comes from our own fear and wounds—which means it's an invitation back to our inner work. This episode begins a new two-part experiment, and on Friday's Bonus podcast by subscription, I'll take you deeper, applying the 9-Step Soul Recovery Process to dig deeper in the 'how to' on this topic.Listen to the Bonus Friday Podcast as an Apple Podcast subscriber or for FREE the first week as a Free Patreon Member- this is a great way to support the Recover Your Soul Community AND get accessWant to join the Recovery Your Soul community? As we move through August, I want to talk about what I am calling "The In Between." The in between of pain/trauma/struggles and healing and truly moving through it all to get to the place of living the life you want. It is tricky because you are so used to our pain/trauma/struggles that you may not really know who you are without it.  Who are you without high levels of anxiety? Who are you without thinking about how you have been wronged? Who are you without the rumination and worry of your pain? The worry and rumination keep you tethered to your pain. Learning to move through it all takes time and practice. If you find yourself clinging to your pain, don't worry, it is actually a good sign if you can see that you do that.  As you reflect on your own journey, tune into this meditation and let your body relax and connect with your higher self. You have to slow down the noise of life to see if you are stuck in your old ways. They are familiar to you, so it makes sense that you cling. Even uncomfortable feels comfortable sometimes. It can feel very scary to set down this piece of you, the old you, the one that was so in her pain that she could see no way out, to the you that can see a way out, but your identity and stories and way of being, keep you locked into the only way of being you know. This in between is such a scary place to be. However, if you lean into trusting yourself, a whole new world will open up for you. Are you wiling to build your "trusting yourself" muscle? This is the place where all the magic happens.

Ever feel like your cravings (or impulses) have control over you?In this episode, we're breaking down a simple but powerful process to take back your power without relying on willpower alone. You'll learn how to pause in the moment, understand why the urge is there, and see it for what it really is (hint: you won't explode if you don't give in).  I'll walk you through how to write down the urge, your perceived reasons for acting on it, and then uncover the true cost of giving in. From there, we'll make a decision from a slower, clearer place rather than from that instant “must do it now” energy. I'll also share a personal example of how I've experienced this urge loop in my work life, and how simply planning when I'll handle something helps my brain relax. We'll talk about why saying “no” often makes the urge stronger at first and how to ride it like a wave instead of letting it sweep you away.  Think of it like handling an angry toddler's tantrum: it feels intense, but it passes.  By the end, you'll have a repeatable framework for handling cravings, emotional eating triggers, or even those distracting work pings that derail your focus. This is your guide to breaking the cycle and building self-trust one urge at a time. Time Stamps: (2:20) Guilt and Cravings (3:54) Imagine This Scenario (6:30) Urge on Answering A Message Example (11:50) Everything Is A Tradeoff (15:10) Building The Self Trust Muscle---------------------Find Out More Information on Vital Spark Coaching---------------------Follow @vanessagfitness on Instagram for daily fitness tips & motivation. ---------------------Download Our FREE Metabolism-Boosting Workout Program---------------------Join the Women's Metabolism Secrets Facebook Community for 25+ videos teaching you how to start losing fat without hating your life!---------------------Click here to send me a message on Facebook and we'll see how I can help or what best free resources I can share!---------------------Interested in 1-on-1 Coaching with my team of Metabolism & Hormone Experts?
