See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Sam’s Place: The Tale of a Small Town Cafe by Randy L. Quinn https://www.amazon.com/Sams-Place-Tale-Small-Town/dp/B0DZC78VMM Sam's Place tells the story of a small-town restaurant and its owner, Sam Davenport. We are invited into the lives of the people who live in Elkader, people who occupy roles familiar to anyone who has lived in a small town. The story is about the restaurant, and how the people who frequent it care for each other over several decades, serving as a model for the best life possible in every American community. About the Author Randy L. Quinn currently lives in El Dorado, Kansas, a much larger town than the setting for his most recent book, Elkader, Iowa. After serving as the pastor of several small-town United Methodist churches, he and his wife Ronda chose to live in El Dorado largely because it had a small-town feel. Randy grew up in military towns along the coast, following his father's assignments in the US Navy. He graduated from high school in Oak Harbor, Washington, and earned his first degree at the University of Washington in Seattle. Having lived in several small towns, Quinn began to recognize common traits among them, almost as if the same people lived in each town but with different names. While he did not grow up in a small town, he learned to appreciate the values learned in these communities and the powerful pull they have to draw people back after they leave. When he retired, Quinn began writing for his personal enjoyment. Aside from writing, he follows the lives of his four children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren while keeping an active role in his church and community.

The house wasn't boarded up. It wasn't ruined. It was just… waiting.A friend still had the key, and the story that came with it: a ghost named Elsie, quiet until she wasn't. So a group of kids in El Dorado decided to do what kids do—go inside and see if anything happens. The moment they stepped through the entryway, the place felt wrong in a way no one wanted to admit out loud. The kitchen sat in total darkness, and one person couldn't shake the feeling that someone was standing there, staring straight back at them. They tried to laugh it off. They moved upstairs. A door slammed—easy to explain, they told themselves. A cord, a draft, nerves. So they went back downstairs, convinced it was all nothing.Until the insult. Then the house answered—fast—like something had been waiting for permission to stop pretending.#RealGhostStoriesOnline #Hauntings #HauntedHouse #ParanormalPodcast #GhostStory #UrbanLegend #Haunting #PoltergeistActivity #DontProvoke #UnexplainedLove real ghost stories? Fully & Completely: ReduxEpisode 104 — Fully Completely (1992)A presentation of The Tragically Hip Podcast SeriesHosted by jD and Greg LeGrosClass is officially back in session. In Episode 104, Fully & Completely returns as Fully & Completely: Redux — our weekly, album-by-album wander through the studio catalogue of The Tragically Hip.This week: Fully Completely (1992). The one that didn't just kick the door down — it blew the whole damn car up.And because this is Redux, you get it in two parts:First, a short present-day catch-up with jD and Greg — sitting in the “easy chairs by the fireplace” version of adulthood — reminiscing about what this record felt like then, what it feels like now, and why it still hits like a masterclass. Then we drop into the classic Fully & Completely episode, now re-edited, re-mixed, and re-mastered — the same deep dive, but cleaned up, tightened up, and sounding better in your headphones. From the jump, the conversation is rooted in why this album became a cultural object in Canada: six singles, nonstop video rotation, and that feeling that you couldn't escape it — even if you tried. Not because of CanCon. Because people wanted it.We get into why Locked in the Trunk of a Car is such a strange (and perfect) lead single, the confidence of a band shifting from “beloved” to “the band,” and how the record meant to help crack America ended up being, arguably, their most Canadian statement up to that point.Along the way: 1992 as a time capsule (good, bad, and bananas), the shifting musical landscape, and how Gord's writing starts leaning harder into Canadian stories, mythology, and history — without turning into novelty. It's huge. It's dusty. It's intense. And it still holds up top to bottom. In This EpisodeThe Redux intro: jD + Greg reunite, reminisce, and talk about how this record lands nowWhy Fully Completely felt unavoidable in Canada (six singles, constant rotation)1992 as a time capsule — culture, headlines, and a wildly stacked year in musicThe jump in sound: new producer, bigger rooms, bigger ambition, bigger “world stage” vibeThe American push that got pulled after two weeks — and what that meantGord's shift into Canada-as-myth + Canada-as-story songwritingParty guitars, campfires, and why we all somehow still know that songTrack-by-track highlights including:Courage and the Hugh MacLennan connectionLocked in the Trunk of a Car and the bootleg “bonus for the nerds”At the Hundredth Meridian as a national singalong momentWheat Kings as the great Canadian makeout song you probably shouldn't make out toDeep cuts love for Eldorado and the title track's intensityAlbum DiscussedFully Completely (1992)Produced by Chris TsangaridesSix singles. A diamond-era cultural staple.A road album. A statement. A turning point. What's NextNext week, the journey continues — another step forward, another right turn, another era.Listen & SubscribeFully & Completely: Redux is available wherever you get your podcasts.Follow, subscribe, and settle in — we're taking this fully and completely, one record at a time.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/tthtop40/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Welcome back to AthCastMusic. My name is Marlene Sokol Stewart, and this is my Podcast.Today's Episode is about one of those stories that feels like the ghost of Athens past. The people. The places, the timing, and the music that couldn't have happened anywhere else. Our guest Bob Hay grew up right in the middle of the musical explosion of the ‘60's, learning guitar after the Beatles changed everything. Like so many of that generations, it started with Bob listening to bands and musicians like the Animals, Simon and Garfunkel, Donovan, Don McLean, Rick Derringer and then slowly realizing that writing your own songs was actually easier than trying to perfectly play someone else's.High school bands, college years, teaching for a bit, working whatever jobs paid the bills, even time spent at a lobster restaurant in Maine, started Bob down the long and winding road. By the late ‘70's, Athens was funky, cheap and wide open. Empty buildings, a brand new mall pulling business away from downtown, and just enough creative chaos for something special to grow. A conversation with Ken Starratt in the fall of '77, and one January in Athens was all it took to know this was home. Bob worked at the Eldorado vegetarian restaurant among other odd jobs. Listening to bands on Athens WEOG, and concerts at the 40 Watt, created a perfect storm for Bon and what was rambling in his mind. After hitchhiking across the country, stopping at the Grateful Dead's 15thAnniversary, and coming back to Athens, the songs poured out; dozens of them written not just for one person, but for a band that didn't exist yet. After talking with his friend Ken Starratt and a few other musicians, The Squalls became the band those songs were waiting for. Over 60 shows at the 40 Watt, a music scene taking shape, Jim Hawkins (yes, the same Jim Hawkins who played with the Embers and backed Otis Redding) producing the first record cemented Bob Hay and the Squalls as a vital part of Athens' music explosion in the ‘70's and ‘80's. Not to mention their songs being featured in the infamous film “Inside/Out which was a pretty big deal, too. .This episode, like all of the other AthCastMusic's 50 episodes isn't just about one band or one songwriter. It's about the people who were there before Athens was famous for being Athens and the ones who helped build the foundation that everything else stands on. So, settle in! This is going to be a good one! Here is my conversation with Bob Hay.
