Alan Lightman is a physicist, writer (of novels, essays, memoir and science texts), and social entrepreneur. For this unusual episode, his interview served as inspiration for an original song. Made in collaboration with the Podsongs podcast, this conversation covers his career at the intersection of science and humanities, mortality, success, the cosmos, technology, consciousness, writing fiction, embracing ambiguity, out of body experiences, and the idea that there are no answers to profound questions. In this episode of Podsongs, Ryan Walsh of the critically acclaimed Boston-band 'Hallelujah The Hills', interviews ground-breaking researcher Rick Doblin, founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). The interview that the song inspires is song called 'Get Free'. Stream the song: https://ffm.to/getfree Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master's thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. https://maps.org/ Hallelujah The Hills have been releasing critically acclaimed albums and touring the U.S. since 2007. Described by Spin as “criminally underappreciated” and lauded by Pitchfork for their “fist pumping anthems,” they've been declared “Boston legends” in their hometown and as having a “cult following” by Stereogum. The band released their first two albums on Misra Records, assisted Titus Andronicus in recording their breakout album The Monitor, and are one of the only bands to have ever toured with The Silver Jews. Their sound was creatively explained as “the kind of punk rock you'd expect on stage at the roadhouse from ‘Twin Peaks'” in The Boston Herald. Others go further, with Aquarium Drunkard noting “few do it with the style and imagination of Hallelujah the Hills” and Captain's Dead boldly publishing that they “without a doubt they are one of the greatest bands currently making music.” https://www.hallelujahthehills.com/ LYRICS: We've been backstabbed betrayed, butchered and splayed On the altar of “the way it's always been done.” It's American, man, watch the funerals span The bulk of the calendar year And you can shake your head say it's not right Spend all your nights in electronic fights But you know in the end, there's no way to defend The way we do nothing at all When waking up is a trauma and hellos turns to drama You disassociate from every nuclear thought Total lack of conviction with a bullshit addiction It's enough to forget all we've got And all we've got could someday be enough A spiritual world where we lean into love Well hey I get it man, you're not sure of the plan As you harangue me holding a beer What if the best in us was on the cusp Of true manifestation? Could we take the leap into the deep And find that the softest landing? And besides What have we got to lose? If we could stay like this or get better, What would you choose? Time to grow up 'Cause it's no rights if they control us My whole life all I heard was “no drugs” Coming from the motherfuckers that don't even know drugs And as I Get to get a little closer I can identify the propaganda like “hold up” Then we can recognize that the lies never hold up Whether you do a line, or wine, or you roll up High Times couldn't cover my mind by the byline The news never spill the truth on a timeline The boys in blue are the brutes in my lifetime I been on sidelines and now it's high time Look at the country deposit Locking my people for profit How can you look in the mirror? I cannot honor "Your Honor" Chasing our happiness and I'm knowing the courage will cause it What do we need? To get out the closet Wassup? Podsongs is a unique podcast format created and hosted by Jack Stafford, a British musician living in Italy. Musicians interview inspiring people and produce a song inspired by the conversation. War on Mother Nature The song was recorded at Goldmine Records in Vallo della Lucania, Italy. The music was written by Jack Stafford, with lyrics by Jack Stafford and Rebecca Jenkins. Rebecca Jenkinson sang vocals, and it was produced by Maurizio Sarnicola and Massimino Voza, who also played Drums, Piano, Bass, Trumpet, Organ and Keys. Maurizio Sarnicola played guitar. Balinese activist and singer Kai Mata interviews English writer Dorian Lynskey—author of 33 Revolutions Per Minute: A History of Protest Songs and The Ministry of Truth: A Biography of George Orwell's 1984—on episode #106 of the Podsongs podcast. Challenged to come up with a song that covers both subjects, she creates an anti-protest song—an anthem for peace. LYRICS: To those who call for uprising And bloodshed to begin Who holler that the system must be torn down from within If you want to drive out the dark Well stand up with light in your heart You're acting like it's Nineteen Eighty-Four - And you need a revolution Screaming for a storm rage and a war - trying to tear down institutions Preaching hate, liberate, anger bait nothing more - we're in need of resolution You're acting like it's 1984 An eye for an eye Makes the whole world blind With peace in your actions There's peace in your mind If you want to drive out the dark Well stand up with light in your heart You're acting like it's Nineteen Eighty-Four - And you need a revolution Screaming for a storm rage and a war - trying to tear down institutions Preaching hate, liberate, anger bait nothing more - we're in need of resolution You're acting like it's 1984 In the cacophony, I hear a single melody So would you come along and sing this song with me? We can use harmonies to sing of what we dream this little world could be You can be mad, you can be angry In this time where words are feeling so unheard We write songs about our worries Sing out loud to share our stories In the hopes that someone near or far can hear our words and feel them in their heart You're acting like it's Nineteen Eighty-Four - And you need a revolution Screaming for a storm rage and a war - trying to tear down institutions Preaching hate, liberate, anger bait nothing more - we're in need of resolution You're acting like it's 1984 Links: Kai Mata - http://kaimatamusic.com/ Dorian Lynskey - https://www.dorianlynskey.com/ Podsongs - https://podsongs.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/podsongs/message

So, when I interviewed a sleep doctor, he talked about how there are these different chronotypes and we're all a different chronotype and you can sleep based on your type of biorhythm. So, if I put that in a song, more people will hear about it and more people will study his book.” (19:55) (Jack) “Ignorance is the only crime on the Earth. And if we can solve this, all the other problems will be solved.” (34:55) (Jack) “It will have this trickle-down effect because most people listening to this will just roll their eyes, but because we're in this reincarnation cycle where, along the other realms, the membership is much higher. So, when you're born back on this realm, there are some people that it will take just one word to connect.” (47:34) (Jack) Links Mentioned: FullCast Website –https://fullcast.co/ ( https://fullcast.co/) Podcast Junkies Junkies Facebook Group –https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastjunkiesjunkies/ ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/podcastjunkiesjunkies/) Link to Podfest Expo Virtual Summit –https://podfestexpo.com/ ( https://podfestexpo.com/) Link to The Podosphere - https://www.thepodosphere.com/ (https://www.thepodosphere.com/) Link to Aetherius Society - https://www.aetherius.org/ (https://www.aetherius.org/) Link to Descript - https://www.descript.com/ (https://www.descript.com/) Jack's Website - https://podsongs.com/ (https://podsongs.com/) Podsongs Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/podsongs/ (https://www.instagram.com/podsongs/) Podsongs Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/podsongs/ (https://www.facebook.com/podsongs/) Podsongs Twitter - https://twitter.com/podsongs?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (https://twitter.com/podsongs?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Jack's Podcasts: Mysticast – https://open.spotify.com/show/7Ct8dufDZMUmM24CD2FQnA (https://open.spotify.com/show/7Ct8dufDZMUmM24CD2FQnA) Podsongs – https://podsongs.com/ (https://podsongs.com/)

We made it to 100 episodes in just over a year. Well done to the whole team. Thanks to the guests, the musicians, the listeners, everyone! How should we celebrate our one-hundredth episode? - it has to be something special edition. And it is. Because I originally started Podsongs as a way to help publicise the Aetherius society, the spiritual organisation that I'm a member of. And about 12 of the last 100 guests were from the Aetherius Society. Two directors of the society in LA—Brian Keneipp and Paul Nugent—agreed to come on and give a special track by track commentary, with some extra metaphysical insights. The album is called 'Through slits in the chrysalis'—meaning the truths we get glimpses of, through cracks in our cocoons—and will be available on all platforms from 1st January. Tracks: 1 The Prison of Materialism 2 The Violet Flame 3 The Mother Earth 4 The Healer 5 Most Caterpillars Don't Believe In Butterflies 6 The Mighty Sun 7 If The Bombs Go Off 8 Pranayama 9 Serve 10 Hymn of the Blessings 11 Bravery 12 Don't Dwell on your Physical Shell 13 The Absolute 14 Blind and Groping in the Dark Moving forward.... In 2022 we'll be switching to an episode every fortnight which is what many other shows do, like Song Exploder the next best music podcast. Podsongs has become all-consuming... Because it's not just the production of the podcast that takes time - now I have to find musical guests who want to collaborate, finding a guest expert for them to interview, researching, recording, editing.... and then making the songs of course, which has been huge.... but it's also that now we give every song a special single release, with marketing, promotion, a music video... we're a proper record company. And two singles a month is still a lot. And even on top of that, another new idea for next year is that I want to release episodes with video as well - but we need something extra special for Podsongs - so not just talking heads, but as well as each episode inspiring a song, it will also inspire a painting..... I'm asking artists to video themselves creating a piece inspired by the conversation - so on youtube, you'll have a split-screen of the interview and the artist painting a picture in real-time. It's evolving into a gesamtkunstwerk - as we have music, dancers in the music videos. Maybe some literature in future, with story readings instead of interviews. Jack is the host of Podsongs, a podcast where artists interview activists and write a #songforgood to help them with their work. Jack is also a talented singer-songwriter in his own right and has released 18 albums over the last 20 years. He is English but lives in beautiful seclusion in the south of Italy by the sea with a lifestyle that most of us can only dream about. In this episode, we talk about ayurveda, Jack's experience, his latest album ASHTANGA HRIDYA and his musical ayurvedic journey as an Ayurveda troubadour. You can listen to his songs on www.podsongs.com and check out his YouTube videos on his channel Podsongs. https://youtube.com/c/JackStaffordPODSONGS Instagram link: https://instagram.com/jackstaffordtroubadour?utm_medium=copy_link Facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/thejackstaffordfoundation --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
What if every guest inspired the host to write a song? This is exactly what happens on Jack Stafford's podcast Podsongs. He kicked it off only last year and has already created a unique little universe of over 100 episodes and songs now. Lately, this universe has evolved into a collaborative project with guest musicians coming on. Jack had been a musician for many years when the pandemic forced him to look for other outlets for his music. He talks to all kinds of inspirational people, but he has a mission: to bring spirituality to the centre stage and mysticism back into the mainstream. Jack grew up in the UK but moved to Amsterdam, where he lived a toyboy lifestyle working as a copywriter, musician and fashion designer. However, this led to burnout, so Jack sold all his possessions and set off on a bicycle tour as a nomadic troubadour. He travelled through 45 countries, playing hundreds of house concerts in return for a place to sleep. He recorded many of his crazy adventures in his songs, and through those—plus countless self-help books and podcasts, as well as yoga, Ayurveda and Vipassana meditation—he grew and grew to become a unique modern-day troubadour. His spiritual awakening happened in India. It wasn't a flash experience, it came gradually. The person who showed him how to find a deeper reality was an American. ”You think you'll meet some Indian guru. But this man had been doing pranayamas and mantras since he was three years old. And he opened the door to George King and the Aetherius society. So there I am in India, learning about an Englishman via an American...” The Aetherius society has since been at the centre of Jack Stafford's spiritual quest. It is a small movement founded by George King in the 50s. The teachings are fascinating but may appear mysterious to many people. Jack explains bits and pieces of it. ”If you're open to it, it's Buddhism and Christianity and UFOs and science, all wrapped into one bundle of joy”, he says with a smile. ”We are here to be of service. We are here to learn. We are in a classroom.” Many spiritual people unwisely skip the material aspects of this earthly existence, Jack thinks. ”Many spiritual people just want to be in the bosom of their garden with fairies or meditate. They don't think it is a spiritual way to get a science degree or start a business. But you can't learn metaphysics unless you master physics.” ”You can levitate if you do 15 years of yoga with mantra and pranayama. These are siddies you get. There is science behind that.” However, once you have attained such siddies, you should deny them, he explains. ”When you master something, you don't use it. Because we are here to be of service.” The teachings of George King and the Aetherius society centers not only around yoga but also extraterrestrial life. ”This is where it can get a little crazy. This is why I got into this gradually.” There is physicality on every level of consciousness and light, according to Jack Stafford. When we die, we go to another realm, which is exactly here, but at a different frequency. ”If you go to another planet with our frequency, it can look like only dust, but in a higher realm, the same planet has cities, temples and spaceships. This is a key concept as to how UFOs and reincarnation are linked.” According to Jack and the Aetherius teachings, some of the ETs visiting Earth may actually be us at a later, or higher, stage–the ”future us” showing up here and now, so to speak. Esther Gokhale has been involved in integrative therapies all her life. As a young girl growing up in India, she helped her mother, a nurse, treat abandoned babies waiting to be adopted. This early interest in healing led her to study biochemistry at Harvard and Princeton and, later, acupuncture at the San Francisco School of Oriental Medicine. After experiencing crippling back pain during her first pregnancy and unsuccessful back surgery, Gokhale began her lifelong crusade to vanquish back pain. Her studies at the Aplomb® Institute in Paris and years of research in Brazil, India, Portugal and elsewhere led her to develop the Gokhale Method, a unique, systematic approach to help people find their bodies' way back to pain-free living. Gokhale's book, 8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back, has sold over 200,000 copies and has been translated into ten languages. In 2010, Gokhale hosted the nationally-televised program Back Pain: The Primal Posture™ Solution (available on DVD and streaming). The Gokhale Method continues to grow as dozens of qualified teachers, each personally trained by Gokhale, now teach the method worldwide. Gokhale has taught at corporations such as Google, IDEO, and Facebook, presented at conferences including TEDx(Stanford) and Ancestral Health Symposium, consulted for the trainers of the SF 49ers and several Stanford sports teams, and conducted workshops for physician groups at Stanford, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, PAMF, and UCSF. The New York Times gave Esther the title “The Posture Guru of Silicon Valley” in 2013. Shocked by the news reports of the conditions in Greece, UK couple Neil and Caroline Dykes went to Thessaloniki to see what they could do to help. They were met by dreadful scenes of overcrowded, rundown buildings with no heat or running water and no prospect of onward movement for the people. These poor families had had their houses bombed out from underneath them, had suffered terrible horrors and their plight was desperate. The large NGOs were sitting on their hands and were more interested in finding comfortable accommodation for their staff than attending to the needs of the Syrians. Their prevarication incensed Caroline and Neil and they set about arranging practical help for the refugees. They visited Greek estate agents and persuaded them to rent apartments to the Syrians, paid for by Caroline and Neil. And when a family moved into an apartment they gave them money for essential shopping, and arranged advice on citizenship and seeking asylum in other countries. Neil even built a wooden bus shelter after a Syrian woman had been run over and killed while waiting for a bus on the side of a busy road. The measure of their success can be seen in the grateful emails they receive from Syrian families now living and working in EU countries.
