LEGO revealed a trailer for new episodes of the Rebuild the Galaxy series coming next month, but there's also the possibility you'll be able to put real blocks together to remake the Death Star. ILM pats itself on the back with an article about VR gaming. On the Saturday September 6, 2025 edition of The Richard Crouse Show documentary filmmaker Nara Garber. Specializing in observational social issue documentaries, her work as a cinematographer has been featured in the Peabody Award winner Best Kept Secret, the Academy Award winner Alex Gibney's “Finding Fela” and Emmy-nominated “End of the Line: The Women of Standing Rock.” Today we talk about her latest film “Bankie Banx: King of the Dune,” explores the life of Anguillian reggae legend Bankie Banx. He's a singer-songwriter known by many as “the Bob Dylan of the Caribbean.” Growing up in Anguilla Bankie made his first guitar and voraciously soaked up everything from British top 40 and folk to Rastafarianism and the Pan-Africanism of Walter Rodney. In 1978 he released his first album, and his breakout hit “Prince of Darkness” put both Bankie and Anguilla on the map. After a decade of touring and battling industry executives determined to pigeonhole his sound, Bankie came home and created the Moonsplash music festival and the Dune Preserve – a beach bar and performance venue. Nara Garber's film about his remarkable life, “Bankie Banx: King of the Dune,” is part of this year's CaribbeanTales International Film Festival, which takes place in Toronto from until Saturday September 13th, 2025, and streaming worldwide until October 3rd. Get more details at caribbeantalesfestival.com. Then, we get to know world renowned animal trainer Melissa Millett. It's the final day of Anime August Week and Amanda and Patrick have saved the best for last: today, they're treating you all to Hayao Miyazaki's award-winning, record-breaking 2001 Japanese animated fantasy film, Spirited Away! Often considered Ghibli Studios's breakout project—and a usual suspect on “best of” lists throughout the industry—Spirited Away is the company's (and Miyazaki's) first Academy Award-winning film, having been only the second movie to win Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards (following Shrek, the award's inaugural winner, lol). As with all Miyazaki films, Spirited Away tackles themes of community building, environmentalism, and greed, conveyed across a simultaneously tender and exciting coming-of-age adventure set against a backdrop of cultural Japanese folklore. Mythical deities, acerbic witches, and whimsical magical entities (looking at you, Soot Sprites!) are just a few things that the 10-year-old protagonist, Chihiro, encounters during her employment at a bathhouse for spirits, where she's forced to earn her keep if she doesn't want to run afoul of powerful witch Yubaba, the bathhouse's austere owner. If Chihiro hopes to make it back to the mortal realm, she'll have to rely on the help of her coworkers and Yubaba's mysterious right-hand man, dragon-shifter Haku. Join Amanda and Patrick as they engage in some all-too-familiar antics, including (but not limited to): Amanda forgetting how to read, Patrick going on a tangent about music, Amanda literally crying about how much she loves this movie, and Patrick Googling things in real time. We at GateCrashers are so excited to bring you the final episode of one of our favorite annual segments. Thank you for joining us. See you next year. Long live Anime August!

When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him; the problem is he has no idea why. As Hank attempts to evade their ever-tightening grip, he's got to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out… Caught Stealing is directed by Academy Award® nominee Darren Aronofsky, screenplay by Charlie Huston, based on his book of the same name. Swing for the Fences: A Deep Dive into Bull DurhamWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell as they welcome special guest Nate McWhortor—a self-proclaimed superfan—to discuss the 1988 baseball romance Bull Durham. This isn't your typical sports movie; it's a sultry, quotable journey through minor league baseball that explores love, mentorship, and the religion of America's pastime. The Church of BaseballThe hosts dive deep into what makes Bull Durham unique among sports films. Unlike major league fantasies, this movie captures the gritty reality of minor league baseball—from shitty buses to $20,000 salaries. Guest Nate McWhortor brings real-world perspective, having worked for the Montgomery Biscuits after college, inspired by this very film. The discussion reveals how writer-director Ron Shelton's own minor league experience creates authentic moments that resonate with anyone who's lived the unglamorous side of professional sports. The trio explores the film's adult themes and memorable dialogue, from Kevin Costner's gruff wisdom as Crash Davis to Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy—a poetry-loving baseball groupie who mentors young players. They analyze the unique love triangle that develops and how the film balances romance with genuine baseball storytelling. The conversation touches on everything from the film's hard R rating to its Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.Key Discussion Points:The authenticity of minor league baseball portrayal and its impact on small communitiesKevin Costner's evolution from leading man to "grumpy Costner" in this breakout roleThe film's adult themes and quotable dialogue that baseball fans still use todayHow Bull Durham differs from other 80s baseball movies like Major League and Field of DreamsThe unique perspective of having a female narrator in a male-dominated sports genreFinal VerdictThe hosts deliver their "garter ratings" with Nate giving his favorite film a perfect 10/10, while Krissy and Nathan both land on a respectable 7/10. Despite some pacing issues in the final act, everyone agrees the film holds up as both a baseball movie and a romance, though they warn it's definitely not for young viewers despite its quotable nature.Connect with the ShowDiscover more episodes and get early, ad-free access plus bonus content by becoming a member at trustory.fm/join. Devin & James are back in the Den to celebrate the 50th anniversary of some fantastic and influential films coming from Asia in 1975! We start with one of our favorite monsters in the Kaiju classic THE TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA! We then take to the streets with Kinji Kukasaku's brutal yakuza tale COPS VS. THUGS. Then things get more kung fu classical in the origin story of one of cinema's coolest weapons, THE FLYING GUILLOTINE. After that, we hop on THE BULLET TRAIN (No, not the Brad Pitt one. The Sonny Chiba one!). Our cinematic traveling continues down under with the Australian/Chines co-production, THE MAN FROM HONG KONG. From there, we go completely off the rails with the cinematic cotton candy that is SUPER INFRAMAN. Finally, we get a taste of horror (and some other things we'd rather not mention here) in BLACK MAGIC. All of these films are from Japan or China, but we make sure to check in on the rest of the continent with shout-outs to YEONG-JA'S HEYDAYS out of Korea, THE RARE BLUE APES OF CANNIBAL ISLE from Malaysia, the Bollywood classic SHOLAY, and DERSU UZALA, the Academy Award-winning Russian film directed by Akira Kurosawa!

Hello everyone! It's been a minute but we are back with another episode selected by vote from out discord community! We will be talking about one of the greatest films of the 21st century (according to a New York Times polll,) No Country For Old Men, directed by the Joel and Ethan Coen, also known as the Coen Brothers. It is the first film we have covered from the acclaimed duo, and to make this episode extra special, we have a guest that is a big Coen Brothers fan!Not only did the film win 4 Oscars during the 80th Academy Awards ceremony, more importantly, the film left a resounding impression on audiences at the time, particularly the three of us on this episode. We talk about how the use of violence, lack of score, and the motivated cinematography courtesy of the great Roger Deakins elevated what we could expect from a movie. Also, who can forget the chilling performance from Javier Bardem, creating the iconic hitman, Anton Chigurh, doing to bob cuts what Jaws did to sharks. We talk about the differences between the novel by Cormac McCarthy and the film, and how the camera work, performances, and costume design elevates the words from the novel into the visual language of film. We get into how the Coen Brothers work together, and talk about why they are no longer making films together. We talk about their style and what makes them some of the greatest film makers in modern cinema. Also, speaking of cinema, our guest Aaron is a professional cinematographer! He provides insight on the craft and its use in the film, and what makes it one of his favorites. As casual movie goers sometimes it is easy to forget the actual work it takes to make a film look the way it does. We don't think about why a particular shot is used for a particular line of dialogue, or how are the lights placed to create that shot, or why any of it matters. Yet, we can always feel it, because it is a part of every movie we ever watch. On this episode we get a chance to talk to someone who can tell us a little of how that movie magic works. We hope you enjoy this one!

The program is broken up into two experience levels: the Starter Lab, which is for beginner students looking to learn the basics of filmmaking and enhance their storytelling skills; and the Advanced Lab, which is for students who want to build upon their existing skills. All students dive deep into the filmmaking process by learning about screenwriting, storyboarding, production, cinematography, sound, editing, and much more.Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, guest speakers, discussions, and workshops, campers form a deeper understanding of the production process from conceptualization to post-production, transform their ideas into proper screenplays, and create group short films of their own. Throughout the duration of camp, students create a short film and rotate roles to experience all positions on a film set including director, cinematographer, sound, and grip. Students will gain technical skills such as editing with Adobe Premiere Pro, screenplay formatting, learning how to use professional cameras, as well as lighting and sound equipment. Camp culminates with a screening of the student's final films and a walk on the red carpet! The curriculum is supplemented with guest speakers of SFFILM supported and Bay Area filmmakers. In recent years guests have included Academy Award nominated Jim Lebrecht (Crip Camp), Bret Parker (Pixar), Academy Award nominated filmmaker Trevor Jimenez (Weekends), Alice Wu (The Half of It), aSupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Deanna Gerstel Harris as guest to the show. About Deanna Gerstel Harris: Deanna Gerstel Harris is a writer, director, producer, board-certified holistic health practitioner, and former creator of digital content for children with developmental disabilities. She was featured in Redbook Magazine's “Heroes: 10 Moms Who Are Changing the Face of Autism.” A caregiver for over 20 years, Deanna has served as a Fellow with Caring Across Generations, a national organization working to transform the way we care in this country. An experienced manager of Broadway, film, and television talent, Deanna's projects are deeply informed by her lived experience as both a caregiver and care recipient, as well as her passion for centering caregiver resilience and uplifting underrepresented voices and experiences. About When We Care: When We Care is an upcoming animated short film that explores the profound and urgent intersection of the climate and caregiving crises. With an Academy Award-winning animation director and a celebrated Disney composer, the film uses stunning animation and evocative music to tell a moving story of connection, resilience, and shared responsibility. At a time of deep societal polarization and ecological instability, When We Care offers a poetic reminder of the beauty that emerges when we care for one another—and for the environments we call home. Written and directed by Deanna Gerstel Harris and co-produced with Monica Lund and Marian Yeager, the film is deeply rooted in the personal experiences of its creator, who is among the 105 million caregivers impacted by America's growing care crisis. As caregivers and global citizens, Deanna and the When We Care team bring a rare, authentic lens to a story that is both intimate and universal. Their creative vision underscores the growing urgency of two converging global challenges—how we care for people and how we care for the planet—and the opportunity to build a more compassionate and sustainable future. Inspired by real-life events surrounding a beloved cherry blossom tree affectionately known as “Stumpy,” the film draws on both natural symbolism and lived experience to explore themes of care, interdependence, grief, joy, and endurance, and resilience. When We Care is not only a visual and emotional experience—it is a call to action, urging audiences to rethink how we define compassion, strength, sustainability, and community in the face of overlapping crises. With its compelling narrative, artistic excellence, and social impact potential, When We Care explores finding resilience amidst the caregiving and climate crises through the challenges associated with sandwich generation caregiving, aging with dignity, pediatric cancer, the unhoused and homelessness, preserving our environment, and care of our veterans, while inviting viewers to imagine a world in which care, for each other and the Earth, is not a burden, but a shared value that binds us together and helps us all to thrive.
