Red Dragon is like stepping into a limousine where everything works... perfectly."In this very special bonus episode of MINHUNTER, I speak to the extremely talented journalist, author and podcaster Brian Raftery about his great new novel, HANNIBAL LECTER - A LIFE. Synopsis: Drawing from exclusive interviews and previously unseen archival materials, this one-of-its-kind biography of Hannibal Lecter documents the cannibal's journey from terrifying villain to unexpectedly adored antihero. This unique biography traces the many lives and crimes of Hannibal Lecter: his disturbing debut in Thomas Harris's 1981 novel Red Dragon; his rise to infamy in beloved films like Michael Mann's Manhunter and Jonathan Demme's Academy Award–winning The Silence of the Lambs; and his unexpected comeback in the cult-hit TV series Hannibal. It also dives into the untold life and career of Harris, the secretive bestselling author whose passion for reporting, eye for grisly detail, and connections to the FBI helped birth not only Lecter, but also the modern true-crime genre. Along the way, Hannibal Lecter: A Life documents the many ways Lecter's rise reflected America's ever-growing obsession with real-life serial killers.Featuring all-new interviews with crucial figures from Lecter's past—including actor Brian Cox, director Mann, and former FBI special agent John Douglas—Hannibal Lecter: A Life is a deeply reported, wildly entertaining look at the making of one of the most beloved bad guys of all time.About Brian Raftery Brian Raftery's work has appeared in such publications as The New York Times, Wired, GQ, and The Ringer. He's the author of Best. Have you ever wondered who is behind all the walk-on and walk-off music at the Oscars ceremony? The music that plays when an award nominee walks on-stage to accept the award, or the music that plays them off when their speech goes on too long. Today on AirTalk, we sit down with composer and lead music arranger for the Academy Awards, Chris Walden. Walden writes all the walk-on and walk-off music for the ceremony. Because winners are not known until the live broadcast, Walden must plan for all contingencies, arranging over 115 pieces of music, each unique to every possible winner. We talk to Walden about what goes into preparing music for the ceremony. Chris Walden is the founder and artistic director of the Pacific Jazz Orchestra. He will be conducting the 40-piece hybrid big band and string orchestra for a Valentine’s Day performance at The Soraya called “Love Inside Out,” headlined by vocalist Veronica Swift. The concert is on Saturday, February 14, at 8:00 pm. Many of the ensemble's players also perform in the Academy Awards orchestra. You can get tickets here.

Rome. 1610. A painter who sees God in the faces of prostitutes and killers is on the run for murder. His name is Caravaggio. He drinks too much. He loves recklessly. Men, women, it doesn't matter. He picks fights with swordsmen and screams at the heavens in candlelit chapels. He paints the way other men pray, except his prayers are in defiance. And the Catholic Church can't decide whether to pardon him or let the bounty hunters finish the job. This screenplay by Richard Vetere, a Pulitzer nominee and Golden Palm winner whose work has been produced by Francis Ford Coppola, follows Caravaggio from the brothels of Rome to a besieged fortress on Malta where a scarred Grand Master offers him sanctuary and something that looks a lot like love. But sanctuary has a price. And Caravaggio has never paid what he owes without bleeding for it.There are popes making deals in candlelight. Brothers hunting him across the Mediterranean for killing their own. A muse he left behind in Rome who can't wait much longer. A rival painter who despises his work and can't stop staring at it. Knights nailed to crosses and set on fire floating into the harbor at dawn. A prison cell carved into rock like a grave. And an escape across open sea in a fishing boat guided by a boy too afraid to speak. This is not a quiet period piece. This is Game of Thrones in Renaissance Italy with paintbrushes and rapiers.Craig Parker, who played Haldir in Lord of the Rings, plays Caravaggio. Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Bruce Davison plays the Grand Master. Dan Lauria, America's dad from The Wonder Years, plays the Cardinal pulling every string in Rome. Ray Abruzzo, Little Carmine from The Sopranos, plays the Pope. The cast includes Broadway veterans, stars of The Chosen, the voices behind the biggest video games on the planet, and a former Navy test pilot born in Italy playing an Italian swordsman.Fourteen actors. One genius who painted like God was guiding his hand and lived like the devil was chasing him. Turns out both were true. This is Caravaggio. This is Table Read. This episode begins with a hypothetical question: what would it look like if Property Mastering were its own Oscar category? We explore it as part of Below the Line's 2026 Oscar series. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Scott Buckwald and Gregg Bilson, Jr. for a deep dive into the craft of property mastering through the lens of the 98th Academy Awards. Using a fictional Oscar ballot as a framework, they explore how props function as storytelling tools — shaping character, tone, and authenticity across a wide range of films. As with the rest of this year's Oscar series, the conversation is available both as an audio podcast and as a full video episode on YouTube, offering listeners and viewers a closer look at how below-the-line crafts are discussed and evaluated from inside the work itself. Our discussion ranges across: Why property mastering sits at the intersection of design, performance, and logistics — often unnoticed, but never incidental How props help define character and period across films like Nuremberg and Song Sung Blue The heightened demands of genre storytelling, from the mythic scale of Frankenstein to the grounded realism of Sinners Managing continuity and narrative logic when props evolve over the course of a story The technical and ethical considerations involved in handling story-critical objects, from weapons to documents and artifacts How preparation, research, and documentation allow property masters to support performance without drawing attention to the work itself Why collaboration with actors and other departments is essential to making props feel lived-in rather than ornamental What this hypothetical exercise reveals about how deeply props are woven into storytelling, even when they're easy to overlook The conversation highlights property mastering as a discipline defined by preparation, judgment, and storytelling instincts — a craft that quietly anchors performance and world-building across every genre.

Editors - Arthur Tarnowski ACE, CCE and Véronique Barbe CCE After years of working in different cutting rooms across Montreal, Heated Rivalry editors Arthur Tarnowski and Véronique Barbe are finally skating on the same line for showrunner Jacob Tierney. But bringing the "spicy" subject matter of Rachel Reid's book series to tv audiences would be no small feat. It required the editors to find the right balance of tension, chemistry and character within and around the steamy sexual encounters of the shows main characters. Heated Rivalry follows the lives of two budding hockey superstars, Canadian Shane Hollander and Russian Ilya Rozanov.  Before becoming pro hockey players, the two meet as competitors at an international hockey competition.  Six months later they would be drafted by two rival teams, the Montreal Metros and the Boston Raiders.  Although their on-ice rivalry is amplified by media coverage and public perception, the two develop a private, initially casual sexual relationship that continues intermittently over several years as they pursue their hockey careers.  Keeping this relationship hidden from the world is a challenge greater than either would ever have on the ice. ARTHUR TARNOWSKI ACE, CCE Arthur Tarnowski is an award-winning editor who grew up loving James Bond and Ingmar Bergman films (thank you PBS). Editor of over 40 features, in both English and French, his eclectic filmography encompasses everything from broad comedies like the Canadian box-office hits Father and Guns 2 and Compulsive Liar to auteur cinema like Drunken Birds (Canada's Academy Awards submission, 2022), Kidnapping Inc.(Sundance 2024; Haiti's Academy Awards submission, 2026), Irena's Vow (TIFF 2023) and The Hummingbird Project(TIFF 2018). He has also created trailers for over 150 films. His most recent project, Heated Rivalry—a Crave/HBO series created with frequent collaborator writer-director Jacob Tierney—has become a global television phenomenon. If the movies you're seeing lately feel like they were assembled by a committee rather than a creator, you're looking at the wrong side of the lens. We are dusting off a classic format today, leaning into the kind of raw film breakdowns we used to live for. The spotlight is on two heavyweights: Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme and Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another. Both of these pictures have just locked in Best Picture nominations for the 2026 Academy Awards, and it feels like a signal fire. After years of franchise fatigue and focus-tested safety, we are looking at a lineup that suggests great, uncompromising cinema is finally clawing its way back to the center of the frame. Fair warning: we aren't holding anything back here, so consider this a total spoiler warning. We are going deep into the structure, the endings, and the technical magic tricks that make these films work: from the anxiety-inducing rhythm of Safdie's 1950s ping pong subculture to Anderson's mastery of the long-lens Mojave car chase. This year's nominations feel like a turning point, a collective realization that the audience is hungry for movies that challenge them rather than just pat them on the back. It's a look at why the "cavalry isn't coming" for Hollywood, and why that might be the best news we've heard in decades for anyone who actually cares about the craft of visual storytelling. //links// Monstrous Moonshine > Marty Supreme Trailer > One Battle After Another Trailer > Original Ending of Marty Supreme >   This episode is sponsored by: Center Grid Virtual Studio Kitbash 3D (Use promocode "cggarage" for 10% off)

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 344: Russell Carpenter When cinematographer Russell Carpenter began working on Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash concurrently, he knew stepping into the world of Pandora would be a much different production environment. Carpenter and director Jim Cameron had previously collaborated on True Lies and Titanic, which won him the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. As the cinematographer, Carpenter's primary concern was ensuring the lighting on live, motion-captured actors blended seamlessly with a CGI-generated universe. Audiences instinctively understand the physics of sunlight filtering through a forest or the way light refracts underwater. To maintain an emotional connection to the story, Cameron insisted that every frame feel like it was in the real world of Pandora. The Avatar sequels were built in layers, with digital artists building the environment based on the script. Rough versions of the scenes and the blocking for the actors were plotted out, and then they were ready for the motion capture with the actors. Carpenter worked closely with production designers to determine how light should "feel" in these virtual spaces. Because the background was digital, the camera movement and lighting could be tested with instant feedback. If a virtual camera moved through a forest, the real-world lighting on the actor could be tested to react to every digital leaf and shadow in real-time. For over a year, Carpenter lived in two worlds: the virtual and the physical. "I had to keep lighting consistent in the CGI world while translating what Jim was doing on the capture stage," Carpenter says. "In the world of motion capture, things have to match to the half-second. If the camera travels a specific distance at a specific speed, the actor has to be exactly there. It's painstaking." A major breakthrough for the sequels was the use of programmable LED systems. Working with computer programmers and moving lights, Carpenter's team devised a way to shift intricate lighting setups instantly. This allowed for more complex visual storytelling, such as backlit sequences and the dappled, moving light of the Pandoran jungles. For Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron pushed for a more "organic" look, requesting the digital world mimic the flaws of physical film cameras. “Certain artifacts were introduced into Fire and Ash that we didn't quite have on Way of Water,” Carpenter explains, “such as lens flares and the appearance of water running off the front plate of a camera lens.” The team tested shooting lens flares, and a Weta programmer built it into the CGI world. To simulate the "Ash People" shooting flaming arrows, Carpenter's team used a grid of overhead LEDs programmed to "zip" past the actors' heads at arrow-speed, creating a realistic flicker of firelight on their faces Despite the technical hurdles, Carpenter found that the core of his craft—sculpting light—remained the same, even if the toolkit had changed. He admits the transition isn't for everyone. “I would say to any cinematographer who ventures into this territory, there's a learning curve where you definitely feel like a stranger in a strange land,” he says. “You realize that, especially in terms of live action, your percentage of the pie is less—but your impact on the final vision remains vital.” You can see Avatar: Fire and Ash in a variety of formats in theaters everywhere. In this episode of This Is Palestine, host Diana Buttu speaks with Palestinian writer and director Annemarie Jacir about her Academy Award shortlisted film, Palestine 36. The historical drama is set during the Great Palestinian Revolt against British colonial rule. At the heart of the film is Al-Basma, a fictional village inspired by the Palestinian villages of Lifta and Al-Bassa, which were destroyed and whose Palestinian residents were expelled by Zionist militant forces. Described as “epic” and a “masterpiece”, Palestine 36 weaves personal stories with the political realities of the era. Jacir reflects on the obstacles of bringing the film to life, the depth and complexity of its characters, and the importance of Palestinian cinema in confronting erasure and telling our history on our own terms. The film is Palestine's official submission to the 98th Academy Awards for Best International Film. Thank you for tuning into This is Palestine, the official podcast of The IMEU!
