THE BETTER BELLY PODCAST - Gut Health Transformation Strategies for a Better Belly, Brain, and Body

Have you been told that your thyroid — or hypothyroidism — is the reason you're dealing with fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, bloating, or digestive issues that seem to keep piling up?Have you started thyroid medication or supplements, only to feel maybe a little better… but still not like yourself?Or maybe your doctor is telling you that your labs are “normal,” but you're still suspicious thyroid might have something to do with it — and you want to know how you can support your thyroid safely to boost your energy, digestion, and metabolism? If any of that sounds familiar, then this episode is for you. Today we're continuing the Real Root Cause Series, where I'm taking conditions that are commonly labeled as root causes — and breaking down to you what their REAL root causes are. This is super powerful because understanding a fake vs. real root cause is the difference between healing from your symptoms... or not. Today's topic is: thyroid health — specifically hypothyroidism. This episode might ruffle some feathers, because I'm going to make the case that hypothyroidism itself is not a true root cause. That doesn't mean your symptoms aren't real. And it definitely doesn't mean your labs don't matter. But it doesmean that something else is driving why your thyroid hormones aren't working the way they should. In this episode, I'm walking you through:Why thyroid medication alone often doesn't fully resolve symptomsHow you can have “normal” labs and still have hypothyroid symptomsHow thyroid hormones are actually made, converted, and used in the bodyWhat this has to do with finding (and testing for) the real root causes to thyroid imbalanceWhat gut health has to do with thyroid healthAnd what needs to be addressed underneath your thyroid for your symptoms to truly improve If you're ready to understand your thyroid better than you ever have, plus have the tools you need to support your thyroid (and whole body health) beyond medication - then this episode is for you. In this powerful throwback episode, we revisit one of the most meaningful and eye-opening conversations I've had on the homestead. I sat down with Dr. Shannyn Pearce to talk about what's really going on underneath the struggles so many women face — thyroid issues, adrenal overload, hormone imbalance, and the subtle warning signs that often go unnoticed. We dig into the everyday symptoms many of us tend to brush off: fatigue, unexplained weight gain, mood swings, inflammation, and food sensitivities. I share parts of my own journey, including how I got off thyroid medication, uncovered hidden food reactions, and learned to listen to my body in a deeper, more intentional way. Dr. Shannyn also explains why individualized lab work matters, how "normal" ranges don't always reflect what's optimal for you, and how adrenal and hormonal shifts can quietly influence your well-being long before bigger issues surface. Most importantly, this episode focuses on real, actionable steps — from managing stress and removing inflammatory foods to supporting the adrenals and giving your body the time and grace it needs to heal. If you've ever felt like you're doing everything "right" yet still don't feel like yourself, this conversation will give you clarity, hope, and a practical path forward. Crashing after your morning coffee? Waking up hours before your alarm? These tiny walnut-sized organs sitting atop your kidneys might be sending you important messages about your stress levels.Learn more about your Adrenal Glands with this free resource:Chakras and HormonesDr. Charlyce takes us on a fascinating journey through the endocrine system, explaining how these mighty glands produce hormones that regulate everything from your morning energy to your stress response. We learn how the brain's command centers—the hypothalamus and pituitary gland—constantly monitor your environment and psychological state, sending signals to your adrenals that trigger the release of cortisol and adrenaline. While these hormones are essential for survival and motivation, our modern always-on lifestyle keeps them pumping without the recovery periods our bodies desperately need.Through personal examples and practical science, Dr. Charlyce shares how functional medicine approaches adrenal health differently than conventional medicine. She reveals how home testing helped identify her own imbalanced cortisol patterns and melatonin deficiency, leading to personalized solutions that didn't involve medication. You'll discover specific strategies for supporting your adrenals—from nutrient-dense eating schedules and appropriate sodium intake to balancing exercise with recovery and incorporating grounding practices that activate your parasympathetic nervous system.Whether you're dealing with unexplained fatigue, sleep disruptions, or simply want to optimize your energy and stress resilience, this episode offers actionable insights into working with—rather than against—your body's natural hormonal rhythms. Healing Horses with Elisha
60: Why supporting your horse's adrenal glands is essential for good health and longevity

Healing Horses with Elisha

The adrenal glands play a crucial role in keeping horses healthy and resilient. My recent hands-on experience with horse dissections highlighted the importance of the adrenal glands for metabolism, hormone regulation, and stress response in horses. When horse owners learn how the adrenal glands work and how chronic stress affects them, they can become far more effective in supporting the health and well-being of their horses. The Role of the Adrenal GlandsThe adrenal glands produce cortisol, ACTH, and DHEA, which regulate energy, influence immune function, and affect the overall hormone balance in horses. Horses are prey animals, so they tend to be on high alert. That means their adrenal glands are often working overtime. When a horse is under constant stress from its environment, emotions, or physical strain, it can lead to adrenal fatigue, affecting everything from metabolism to immune function.Hormonal Imbalances and Their EffectsHorses with metabolic issues like PPID or insulin resistance often have adrenal dysfunction. High cortisol levels can lead to tissue breakdown, slow healing, and weaken the immune system. The adrenals also play a role in sex hormone production, as DHEA influences testosterone and estrogen levels. So adrenal health can affect everything, including the reproductive cycle of mares and the hormone balance of geldings. Understanding those connections helps horse owners make better health decisions. The Impact of Chronic Inflammation and StressMany horses deal with low-grade inflammation from environmental toxins, poor diet, or chronic illness. With those issues, the adrenal glands keep pumping out cortisol, which, over time, can wear them out. When adrenal function drops, the pituitary gland produces more ACTH, which can contribute to metabolic disorders. To manage that, owners must reduce external stressors, like inadequate stable conditions and poor handling techniques, and internal stressors, such as diet and gut health.Nutritional and Holistic SupportSupporting adrenal health in horses requires a combination of proper nutrition, stress reduction, and careful hormone management. Horses naturally produce vitamin C, but in times of stress, they may require supplementation. Other vital nutrients include minerals that help regulate adrenal function. Maintaining a balanced diet that promotes gut health can also reduce overall stress on the body, and providing horses with an environment that meets their instinctual needs for freedom, forage, and friendship is vital for reducing chronic stress.Recognizing the Signs and Taking ActionAs research into equine adrenal health progresses, more vets and equine professionals recognize the signs of adrenal insufficiency. Symptoms like persistent fatigue, poor coat quality, muscle wasting, and metabolic imbalances can indicate underlying adrenal stress. By taking a proactive approach to adrenal support through dietary improvements, environmental enrichment, and holistic care, owners can help prevent long-term health complications in their horses.Links and resources:Connect with Elisha Edwards on her website Join my email list to be notified about new podcast releases and upcoming webinars.Free Webinar Masterclass: Four Steps to Solving Equine Metabolic Syndrome NaturallyRegister for Resolving Equine Metabolic...

You asked, and now it's back by popular demand - my most requested video topic of 2024.  After thousands of messages about chronic fatigue, it's time to dive deep into what's really happening with your adrenals. Just because exhaustion is common doesn't make it normal. Your body isn't broken - you're not imagining these symptoms. That bone-deep fatigue, those afternoon crashes, the insomnia that keeps you up at night?  They're all real signals your body is desperately trying to send. In this video, I'm exposing why so many people are struggling with exhaustion, brain fog, and complete burnout.  Your adrenal fatigue isn't "just stress" or "all in your head." It's a real physiological response to a system that's been pushed too far for too long. The problem isn't you.  The problem is that most providers are looking in the wrong places. They're running tests that weren't designed to catch adrenal fatigue in its early stages.  By the time these tests show anything, you're already deep into burnout. You deserve more than just surviving. #449: Suppressive Medicine: How Big Pharma and FDA Get It Wrong With Statins

What's the deal with statin drugs and “high cholesterol”? Even doctors are starting to raise questions. They say that “high cholesterol” is anything over 200 total, but where does this number come from? Is there evidence that cholesterol over 200 actually leads to heart disease? Why do we need cholesterol, and is it possible for it to get too low? On this episode of Vitality Radio Jared arms you with the information you need to decide what to do, if anything, about your “high” cholesterol.  Pharmaceutical companies often develop drugs that target specific symptoms by interfering with the body's natural processes. These medications can be effective in providing temporary relief from symptoms, but they don't usually address the underlying causes of a condition. This is called suppressive medicine, and such treatments may offer short-term benefits at the cost of long-term health. In this series of episodes on suppressive medicine, Jared aims to help you understand the ways in which these drugs work and what natural alternatives there are that work WITH your body's natural systems to address the root cause and rebalance the body. Products:BerberineAdditional Information:#332: Cholesterol Controversy - Jared's Interview on Inside The Aisle with Niki WolfeVisit the podcast website here: VitalityRadio.comYou can follow @vitalityradio and @vitalitynutritionbountiful on Instagram, or Vitality Radio and Vitality Nutrition on Facebook. Florida researchers began a generational study in 2007 that is still years in the making. It all began with the investigation of the impact of heat stress on dry cows to measure changes that might occur to the calf incubating inside the hot dam, like a crock pot. In addition to seeing negative production impacts on mama, the researchers began to measure numerous changes in the damaged calf coming out of the heat stressed dry cow. This month's edition, we'll be interviewing Dr. Jimena Laporta, of the University of Wisconsin, to better understand the physiological changes of the calf that results in lost production for her entire life. Should I be on testosterone treatments? I get this question a lot, so let's talk about it! Testosterone is super important to women; it is the growth hormone responsible for building lean, sexy muscles, keeping our blood sugar and weight in check, and giving us an overdrive for life!  While most of our sex hormones are created by the ovaries before menopause, our adrenal glands also make sex hormones. If you go into menopause with exhausted adrenal glands, your sex hormone levels are going to drop to basically non-existent, which is why we often recommend Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
