Mark Simon Simon offers a harsh retrospective on US-China relations, arguing that the engagement strategy dating back to 1972 has never really worked for the United States. He dismisses the economic trade-off of "cheap stuff at Walmart" as a poor return for allowing China to flood US markets. Simon specifically criticizes the George H.W. Bush administration (and Brent Scowcroft) for making a grand strategic and moral mistake; he contends that by ignoring "blood on the streets," the US propped up a regime that it should have realized could not be changed, missing a critical opportunity to do better.1930S HONG KONG

This week on Second Act Stories, we're featuring a series called "Rewriting the Playbook." This group of episodes features guests whose journeys share a common connection to sports, sometimes front and center, sometimes quietly shaping the path forward. In these conversations, the influence of competition, teamwork, and discipline shows up in different ways, informing career pivots and personal reinvention. Together, these stories explore how the lessons learned on the field can echo long after the final whistle, guiding second acts that are anything but predictable. Fran Tarkenton is unquestionably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game of football. A true legend who rightfully earned his place in the NFL Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame (for his championship career with the University of Georgia Bulldogs), and on the list of the 50 Greatest Minnesota Vikings AND the 50 Greatest New York Giants. In his rookie season in 1961, Fran joined an expansion team called the Minnesota Vikings, and in the first-ever Vikings game he threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth, upsetting the great Chicago Bears. At the time of his retirement from the NFL in 1978, Fran owned every significant passing record: 3,686 pass completions, 47,003 passing yards, and 342 touchdowns. Legend. After retirement, Fran became a commentator alongside the one and only Howard Cosell in the Monday Night Football broadcast booth, he landed a job hosting That's Incredible, one of the biggest sensation TV shows of the 1980s, and he became an early entrant into the software business, a visionary move that launched what would become the longest-lasting and most lucrative part of his illustrious and multifaceted career. At 84.6 years old as of the date of this interview, Fran is as sharp – and as busy – as he's ever been. His company, Tarkenton, is as highly regarded as it is successful in helping other businesses grow and prosper. All the incredible lessons he learned growing up, on the gridiron, in entertainment, and in his many business ventures coalesce into his leadership of Tarkenton to this day. But Fran claims no responsibility for the success he's achieved. He attributes it all to the coaching he's received; in the NFL, from greats like Sid Luckman, Norm Van Brocklin and Bud Grant; and in business, from former IBM CEO John Akers to Walmart founder Sam Walton. In this episode, Fran shares colorful stories about his journey from the streets of Washington, DC; to Athens, Georgia, home of UGA; to the NFL; to entertainment; and ultimately to a wildly successful business career. You can learn more about Fran by Googling his name, and you can learn more about Tarkenton Companies by visiting www.tarkenton.com. ******* If you enjoy Second Act Stories, please leave us a review here. Click Here...!!!Tonight, we're talking about Winter Garden Starts.I know… it's January… it's a frozen tundra out there… it's below freezing and in some places like here, it's below zero. I sure as hell don't want to be working in my garden in ski pants and snow boots… hands all numb and frozen boogers in my beard. Hell No.And therein lies the beauty of it…My garden isn't outside under a foot of snow. It's inside. In the warmth of my grow-room. A 20 x 15' area of work space in the basement with shelves and grow lights, seed starting mixes and potting soils, and seed trays sitting on top of heating mats. There's a bar-height table with a 36x36” black plastic drain pan that we've repurposed as a work surface to keep soil, compost, and water from reaching the floor. Now don't be trying to picture some pristine climate-controlled sciency type of space.Noooo… This is at best, a piece-mealed and frankensteined mash of incompatible interconnected tools of the trade acquired over time and sourced from the cheapest vendors, mostly Amazon and Walmart, and sometimes free… think Dirty Garden Hoe dumpster-diving on the way back from the feed store kind of free… All tossed together and organized into a perfect form of dirty workspace.Does yours have to be as big as ours? No it doesn't. It can be smaller, much smaller. Probably should be smaller. We found out last season that our grow-room is actually not big enough. Remember, our garden is 1250 sqf… I've lived in apartments that were half that size. And this next season, we're adding another 1250 sqf to it… though I haven't quite figured out exactly how yet but, it's gonna happen. We need that space. But, even if you're in a smaller space like an apartment or a flat, you can and should have a grow-room, be it a little corner of the bedroom or window ledges in the living room or countertops in the kitchen or bathroom… or all of the above. Now is the time to start. And Buddy's got you covered. He's got a Top 10 list all about what we need to be doing right now in the dead of Winter, so that our gardens will be lush and plentiful come Spring.TOPS Bunker Podcast YouTube ChannelSpeakPipe/TOPSTOPSBunker.comRefuge Medical Use TOPSBUNKER10 at Checkout for 10% DiscountPlease Visit Our Affiliate Links to Find Great Preparedness Products:Grow Light - Full Spectrum 4'Grow Light - Full Spectrum 2'x2'VivoSun Heat Mat for Seedlings 10"x20"VivoSun Seed Tray Heat Mat ComboHaxNicks 20 Cell Rapid Root Trainer TraysVivoSun Grow Tent System 4'x2'Surge Protector Strip 1625W 8 Slot +USB12/3 HD SJTW Ext Cord w/3 Outlets 6'CordHappy Frog Organic Potting Soil 2 CFVivoSun Worm Farm 3-Layer Kit w/ToolsUncle Jims Red Wigglers Worms 500 Count LiveSupport the show

The episode covers a wide range of topics from hardware shortages and software betas to major security breaches and executive transitions. The panel discusses the recent Vision Pro beta releases, noting that while the updates are relatively minor, they significantly improve connectivity with game controllers. Looking ahead, Apple Arcade is set to launch a "Retrocade" on February 5th, bringing 3D immersive versions of classics like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Asteroids to the headset. The team also reviews the recent immersive Lakers NBA game, sharing mixed feelings about the audio quality and app stability, but ultimately expressing excitement for the future of sports in VR. Current MacBook Pro stock is reportedly thinning, with wait times stretching into March. This has fueled speculation about an imminent release of M5 Pro and M5 Max models. The panel debates whether users should upgrade now or wait for the rumored M6, while also considering how NVIDIA's priority at TSMC for AI chips might be impacting Apple's supply chain. The discussion takes a serious turn regarding a massive 1TB data breach at Apple manufacturing partner Luxshare. The stolen data allegedly includes confidential product designs and engineering documents from 2019 through 2025, raising concerns about reverse engineering and hardware vulnerabilities. On the software side, 1Password has introduced a new anti-phishing feature that warns users when they attempt to paste passwords into suspicious websites. The panel also revisits Walmart's continued refusal to accept Apple Pay, noting that the retailer prefers its own "Walmart Pay" system to maintain control over customer purchase data. Apple TV+ continues to gain momentum with six Academy Award nominations for the film F1. The panel also previews upcoming content, including the March 27th premiere of For All Mankind Season 5, and discusses other popular series like Starfleet Academy and Monarch. A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to reports that John Ternus is being groomed as the next Apple CEO. Ternus has recently taken over management of the design teams, a move seen as a way to expose him to broader business operations before Tim Cook eventually retires. While some panelists express anxiety over a post-Cook era, others highlight Apple's history of strong succession planning. This world takes all types of people.   Some people are big picture people and others are bean-counting, detail-oriented savages that don't miss a piece of lint on a sweater.   Others are creative where others take order and direction.    The other day, I was walking into Walmart and noticed trash on the ground.  I watched 7 people walk past it, so when I rolled up on it, I bent over, picked it up and threw it away.    This is me.     I know it's not my job and apparently whoever has that job at Walmart is not doing their job, but this is where I am different from others.    You may or may not be like this, but ask yourself.............   "Would I pick up the trash?"   This is a very powerful act in itself.    It requires discipline.  Commitment. Consistency.   So, what is the lesson here?    Change starts with simple actions.    Exponential change occurs when simple actions are compounded consistently.    If you want to see change in the world, you have to be the example of what's required to make the change in the world.    About the ReWire Podcast   The ReWire Podcast with Ryan Stewman – Dive into powerful insights as Ryan Stewman, the HardCore Closer, breaks down mental barriers and shares actionable steps to rewire your thoughts. For the 20th anniversary of the fourth My Morning Jacket album, we take a detailed look at how it was made. The band originally formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky by Jim James, Johnny Quaid, Tom Blankenship and J. Glenn. After signing with Darla Records, they released their debut album, The Tennessee Fire in 1999. Danny Cash joined on keyboards before the release of their second album, At Dawn, in 2001. Patrick Hallahan took over on drums as they signed to ATO Records. Their third album, It Still Moves, was released in 2003. At this point, Johnny Quaid and Danny Cash decided to leave the band so they held auditions and recruited Bo Koster and Carl Broemel. For their fourth album, they hired producer John Leckie and began recording outside of their home studio for the first time. Z was eventually released in 2005. In this episode, Jim James describes this pivotal moment for the band when they were challenging themselves by recording outside of Louisville with a seasoned producer. By working with John Leckie, they were able to rely on his expertise in the studio and push themselves in a new direction sonically. He discusses how their early characterization as a southern rock band made him want to evolve musically and try new approaches by incorporating synthesizers and drum machines. He also shares how he was experiencing depression at the time and struggling after the suicides of two of his close friends, Tim Cushing and Aaron Todovich. With the pressure of trying to make a great record mounting, he describes how his depression was clouding his judgement as he felt like this might be the last record the band would ever make. Luckily the band was able to continue and Z proved to be a turning point as new members Bo Koster and Carl Broehmel have remained two decades later. From borrowing a Juno synth and demoing with a cheap Walmart keyboard, to getting into Prince and Fela Kuti for the first time, to mixing at the legendary Sunset Sound, to calling on friends Andrew Bird and M. Ward to play on the record, to writing abstractly about the state of the world, to using music as an outlet for anger, to the enduring quality of these songs that continue to make the MMJ setlists, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1249: We dig into why affordability—not EV tech—is the real sales bottleneck heading into 2026, how agentic shopping is reshaping the idea of ‘merit' across retail, and why Jeff Daniels' new stage play about a struggling dealership is hitting close to home for the auto industry. In a wide-ranging interview with Automotive News, Chevrolet dealer council leader Andy Guelcher explains why affordability—not EV tech—is the industry's biggest hurdle heading into 2026, and how pricing discipline, incentives, and used EVs will ultimately determine sales momentum.Guelcher warns that $1,000-plus monthly payments are unsustainable and, if not addressed, will put real pressure on future vehicle sales.Lower inventory levels have helped dealers protect gross, but affordability now requires more creativity in financing, leasing, and lender mix. From a Chevy standpoint, Guelcher says disciplined inventory management and a renewed focus on lower-MSRP models position the brand well if affordability improves.Hollywood meets the showroom as actor Jeff Daniels brings car dealer drama to the stage. A new play written by a former Automotive News editor puts a struggling dealership — and the people who love the business — front and center, minus the tired stereotypes. The Classic King follows four salespeople racing to save a dealership after losing its new-car franchise, which was inspired by real dealership closures during the Great RecessionThe play is written by former Automotive News editor Richard Johnson and directed by Jeff Daniels at Michigan's Purple Rose Theatre.Daniels praised the script, saying, “There's a lot of heart in it and a lot of humor… it speaks to people who don't just have a job — they love what they do.”AI is officially coming for the shopping cart. Shopify president Harley Finkelstein says “agentic commerce” could fundamentally change how consumers discover and buy products—shifting power away from ads and toward relevance, fit, and meritShopify is betting big on agentic commerce, citing a 14x increase in orders driven by AI agents in just the past year.Google's new Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), backed by Shopify, Walmart, and others, aims to standardize how AI agents shop across brands.Rather than replacing e-commerce sites, agentic shopping is expected to act as a powerful new “spoke,” potentially accelerating overall e-commerce adoption. This episode of the Automotive State of the Union is brought to you by Amazon Autos: Meet customers where they shop: reach high-intJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/
