A Dunedin high school band that will open for the Foo Fighters early next year says it's unlikely they'll play another gig organised by the city council. The band SEEK HELP! from Queen's High School is one of several young bands from the city's thriving music scene that played at New Year's Eve festivities in the CBD. Some councillors have objected to such a raucous punk band being hired in the first place, preferring dance classics to "get the crowd shaking their bits followed by the bag pipes and a new year countdown". Although bigger gigs are to come, the band says the experience has left them feeling undervalued and misrepresented. Adam Burns reports.

Noslēgumam tuvojās X Senās mūzikas festivāls Valmierā. Esmu pārliecināts, ka Ilonas atskaņojums saucams par stindzinoši spožu, tomēr ēterā pulsēja sajūta, ka ar to būs bijis par maz. Koncerta programma bija veidota ar orķestru numuriem sākumā un beigās, bet vidū mikromodelī – flauta un klavieres ar Badinēriju, ap kuru dažādu kameransambļu sniegumā bija savirknēti vēl vairāki citi izcilu komponistu darbi. Kāds varētu kritizēt, ka šis Baha darbs liekams koncerta sākumā, jo tas, ko mēs mūsdienās saucam par svītu, 18. gs. saskaņā ar franču tradīciju tika dēvēts par uvertīru – reprezentablu svētku mūziku galma publikai ar sākuma punktēto 'staccato' ritmu kā pavadījumu karaļa ienākšanai telpā. Šī forma esot pārņemta no Žana Batista Lullī [4], kurš Luija XIV galmā to tika noslīpēt smailu jo smailu. Nē. Valmierā bija republika. Vēl kāds varētu teikt, ka vārds 'badinerie' franču valodā nozīmē izsmiešanu, ņirgāšanos un, kad tāda tiek atskaņota, labāk izpildīt precīzi pēc autora norādēm, t.i., orķestrāli – flauta, stīgas un čembalo. Jo šādā mikromodelī zūd tembrālā krāsainība un arī telpiski skanējuma avots ir krietni koncentrētāks. Nē. Flautas un klavieru sniegumā daudz klārāk dzirdams, ka Baha mūzikas polifonijā visas balsis uzrakstītas kā personības arī tad, kad nav izvirzītas priekšplānā. "Liela krietnības nepieciešamība, ja vien jūs negribat izlikties to neredzam, ir uzlikta jums, jo jūs dzīvojat zem visuredzošā tiesneša acu skatiena," [5] – tā teicis Boēcijs [6]. Un vēl. Koncertā starp abiem orķestriem bija izveidota kameransambļu sekcija, sagrupēta ap ģeniālo Badinēriju – no formas viedokļa koncerts tātad simetrisks – orķestri kā divi pīlāri ar kamermūziku kā kodolu. Viss ir kārtībā ar šādu formu. Turklāt – atšķirībā no šodienas – 2001. gadā latviešu orķestrantiem vajadzēja atgādināt Baha polifonijas kvalitāti, cik iespējams grafiski, jo tolaik viņus (t.i.,  latviešu orķestrantus) laikam uztrauca galvenokārt tas, lai mamma neuzzina, ka viņi pīpē. 2025. gada 26. decembrī plkst. 00:01 ekonomikas komentētājs un mediju producents Kristaps Pētersons portālā delfi.lv publicēja šādus vārdus: "Tikai izglītība – nekas cits – izvedīs mūs no miglas!" [7]. Es tas neesmu, kas to saka, bet man viņam nākas piekrist. Mazu migliņu tolaik radījām. Writing about real people and real events, Rourke maintains the true spirit of rock while delivering songs that resonate deeply.“My goal is to create a brand of rock that brings the genre back to where it used to be, where the 70s meet the 80s. I want to write songs that stay in your head, the kind you are still hearing an hour later. That's what's missing from rock and roll these days. I want to bring rock back to basics,” Rourke shares.Rourke's musical journey began in his preteen years when he first picked up the guitar. Though he later pursued film school, music eventually became his primary platform for expression. In 2016, after growing frustrated by political debates on social media, he stepped away and returned to his guitar, channeling his emotions into songwriting. What began as personal release quickly evolved into a powerful creative outlet. Within a short time, he had written over 1,000 unfinished songs, setting the stage for what would become Starstruck.Over the past five years, Rourke has dedicated his spare time to developing the album one story at a time. What started as an acoustic demo inspired by Guns N' Roses and classic 70s and 80s rock gradually evolved into a full electric production featuring hard rock, blues, and emotional ballads. The album consists of ten songs accompanied by original artwork, including a cover photo Rourke captured himself while driving through downtown Los Angeles, which became a symbolic reflection of division in America.Working alongside his producer and studio musicians in Los Angeles, the project grew from a simple four song demo into a full band album and immersive musical experience.“I Can't Breathe,” the album's third single, delivers a powerful and emotional message inspired by the death of George Floyd and the broader struggles facing the country. The song takes listeners through five emotional stages of the Black experience, beginning with fear, anger, sadness, and frustration before resolving with hope. “When I first wrote it, I started on acoustic guitar,” Rourke explains. “The outro was added at the last minute because it didn't feel complete without it.”With help from childhood friend Rami Jaffee of Foo Fighters, who performs keyboards throughout the album, Rourke transformed the track into a moving statement piece. Guitarist Richard Fortus of Guns N' Roses also contributes to two tracks, adding depth and intensity to the record.Listeners drawn to socially conscious rock should also explore Rourke's single “Rise,” which he describes as his “Michelle Obama” song.
