Ein halbes Jahr nach der Gründung ist der Verein österreichweit vernetzt und wächst stetig. Doch mit der wachsenden Unterstützung nehmen auch die Herausforderungen zu. Gerald Friedl schildert eine Politik, die sowohl beim Schutz der Wölfe als auch bei der Unterstützung der Weidetierhaltung erhebliche Defizite aufweist. Gemeinsam beleuchten Sabine und Gerald die Stimmung in der Bevölkerung, die Auswirkungen der Wolfsdebatte auf Tourismus und Almwirtschaft sowie die Frage, wie sicher Urlauber in Regionen sind, in denen intensiv Jagd auf Wölfe gemacht wird. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist die Rolle von Desinformation. Welche Narrative bestimmen die öffentliche Debatte? Warum haben wissenschaftliche Fakten oft einen schweren Stand? Und wird der Wolf zunehmend zum Sündenbock für strukturelle Probleme in der Alm- und Weidewirtschaft? Besonders im Fokus steht Kärnten: eine der beliebtesten Urlaubsregionen Österreichs und zugleich ein Hotspot für Wolfsabschüsse. Schlagzeilen über vergiftete Geier werfen eine brisante Frage auf: Galt der Giftanschlag den Wölfen? Neue Hinweise legen diesen Verdacht nahe. Auch auf wissenschaftlicher Ebene gibt es Konflikte: Die Populationsgefährdungsanalyse (PVA), die derzeit an der BOKU Wien unter Leitung von Prof. Hackländer entsteht, soll klären, wie viele Wölfe nötig sind, um die Art zu erhalten. Doch dieser Ansatz greift zu kurz: Er erfüllt nicht die Anforderungen der FFH-Richtlinie an einen günstigen Erhaltungszustand. Gerald Friedl warnt, dass die Analyse politisch missbraucht werden könnte – ein weiterer möglicher Verstoß gegen EU-Recht. Im Gespräch wird klar: Die Frage ist nicht mehr, ob Österreich für seine Wolfs-Politik zur Rechenschaft gezogen wird, sondern wann. Bis dahin drohen weitere Abschüsse, wachsender Druck auf die Population und ein Verlust an Biodiversität. Gerald Friedl und seine Mitstreiter nehmen die Herausforderung an. Mit Aufklärung, Sachlichkeit und Ausdauer setzen sie sich weiterhin für den Schutz des Wolfs und den Erhalt einer artenreichen Natur ein.

Jackson Boxer and Eduardo “Lalo” Yishima joined us at TAQ to talk about relaunching one of London's original Mexican restaurants into something far more ambitious, produce-led and reflective of modern Mexican cuisine. Jackson explained how the former Taqueria had become trapped trying to compete on cheapness rather than quality, despite having an incredible location and loyal following. The pair discussed how London's understanding of Mexican food has transformed over the last 20 years, with diners now far more educated and excited by authentic flavours, proper tortillas and regional cooking. Bringing Lalo back from Mexico to lead the kitchen allowed them to completely rethink the menu, from nixtamalized heritage corn tortillas to carnitas, tuna tostadas and deeply flavourful salsas that feel genuinely rooted in Mexico while using exceptional British produce.A huge part of the conversation centred around ingredients and the realities of running restaurants in modern London. Jackson spoke passionately about using rare breed pork, Yorkshire grass-fed beef and whole Cornish tuna across the restaurant group, while Lalo described the emotional significance of properly nixtamalized tortillas and imported Mexican chilis. The pair explained how London diners are now sophisticated enough to appreciate bold, complex Mexican flavours and why TAQ's relaunch focused on quality and value rather than racing to the bottom on pricing. Jackson also opened up about the pressures restaurateurs face today — from social media expectations to shrinking margins — while teasing his upcoming Exmouth Market opening, Vespa, where dishes like coal-grilled squid stuffed with pork and prawn boudin will headline the menu.To close, the conversation drifted into travel, comfort food and personal inspirations. While guiding expeditions through ancient Mesoamerican regions, he was taken to a remote UFO hotspot by two indigenous companions.
