Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to Stephanie Claussen as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast. We Wish You A Merry Christmas is the 3rd episode of 2020 and show #57. It features Christmas music from Laura MacKenzie, Emish, Steel Clover, Seamus Kennedy, Stephanie Claussen, David Pedrick, The Barra MacNeils, Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra, Haggis Rampant, Jed Marum, The Rogues, Marc Gunn & Mikey Mason, Andrew D. Huber, Coyote Run, Angus Mohr & Friends, Mark O'Connor. The show is generously brought to you by the patrons of this podcast on Patreon. Please show your support. If you enjoy the show, you can rate the show or post comments on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher. Subscribe to the podcast at CelticChristmasPodcast.com. And now Stephanie Claussen If you love harp music, why not choose to listen to a proven talent? Not only have Stephanie Claussen's skills been recognized with the title of 2018 US National Scottish Harp Champion, but this Minnesota-based harpist also runs her own harp studio, and travels to play for audiences all over the upper Midwest area of the United States. Claussen is classically trained, and the Celtic influences are easy to hear throughout her style. She is crystal-clear and very enjoyable to listen to on the strings of this enchanting instrument. Claussen has released five solo albums, starting in 2002. She has also collaborated with other artists throughout her career. Since Celtic songs are her specialty, it makes sense that she would craft a Christmas album. After all, what other instrument brings forth the true magic of the holiday more than the harp? The mood that this music calls forth is at once elegant and otherworldly; especially at the hands of an expert harpist. There really isn't anything quite like it. Not only is there the magnificent Celtic flavor, there's also an old-fashioned, medieval charm to it all. It makes for a nice pairing. On Light So Brilliant: Carols and Tunes for Christmas, her collection of Christmas music offers 15 tracks which will add warmth and delight to any holiday gathering. This solo harp album would also be perfect to enjoy by the fire, or while sipping a hot cuppa and taking in the majesty of a fully decorated tree. You'll hear holiday favorites such as “We Three Kings” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”… but that's not all. Claussen also stocks the track listings with a delicate rendition of "Bouree d'Avignon” and other rewarding offerings, providing a full spectrum of beautiful music to round out any holiday music collection. Whether you want to keep it all to yourself or give this album as a gift, it's well worth a listen! Although this artist has just one Christmas album, really any of her albums would mix in well with a holiday vibe. Some instruments just have that “festive” feel to them, and the harp is definitely one of them. It puts a little spring in the step and happiness in the heart—which is what we call holiday spirit! Find out more about Stephanie Claussen at www.stephanieclaussen.com. If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Buy something from them. Sign up to their mailing lists. And share the episode with your friends on social or in your community. The Celtic Christmas Podcast is free to enjoy. However, it is supported by the generosity of Celtic music fans like you over on Patreon. Get Christmas Cheer. Subscribe at CelticChristmasPodcast.com . Nollaig shona daoibh.

Come to a Florida Wars battle re-enactment or living history event commemorating events of the Second Seminole War and you are likely to hear a balladeer singing Songs of the Seminole War. This is not unusual as the Second Seminole War lends itself especially to meaningful musical interpretation through songs. But this singer departs from convention. Although he is a white, southern, country-and-folk musician, Rickey Pittman assumes the perspective of the Seminole in the songs he co-wrote and recorded with the late Jed Marum. Our guest guides us through the meaning behind their song themes, such as the Battle of Okeechobee, and historical characters, such as the Seminoles' Osceola and Abiaka, and the Dade Battle survivor, soldier Ransom Clark.Rickey E. Pittman, the "Bard of the South", is a storyteller, author, and folksinger. He was the Grand Prize Winner of the 1998 Ernest Hemingway Short Story Competition. Rickey Pittman presents his stories, music and programs at schools, libraries, organizations, museums, historical reenactments, restaurants, banquets, and Celtic festivals throughout the South. An adjunct college English instructor with an M.A. from Abilene Christian University, Rickey has fourteen published books, four music CDs and several single releases. You can find out more about him at his website: www.bardofthesouth.com (Performance photo of Rickey Pittman and Jed Marum by Heather Burney)Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. He is a combat veteran and of the U.S. Army, serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Kosovo, and at the Pentagon after 9/11. A military historian, he holds masters degrees in Public History, Communication, and Homeland Security, and is a graduate of the US Army War College with an advanced degree in strategic studies. One of the festivals I have supported over the years is the Texas Scottish Festival. Thanks to our patrons, I made another nice donation to this festival in North Texas. The festival takes place May 10-12, 2019 in Decatur, Texas. And this week, we're gonna highlight some of the amazing artists performing there this year as well as in past years. I want to give you a quick heads up. I decided to skip the podcast next week. Our official move in date for Atlanta is next week. While we will still be in Birmingham for the most part, we will be getting everything setup at our new home. And since May has five Thursdays, instead of the usual four, I figured it was just easier and less financially stressful for many of our Patrons of the Podcast who don't set a cap on their pledges. That said, I decided last minute to compile a short bonus podcast exclusively for our Patrons of the Podcast. If you want to support the show, please consider joining them. My husband and family and I have a ritual - we love listening to your podcast as we cook dinner. We talk about our days and enjoy your wonderful music! Simple but wonderful! Thank you! In any case, I was just listening to the current podcast, and you mentioned having a podcast devoted to the Celtic harp! I was thrilled. I've spent the last 20+ years studying the "clarsach" or 'Celtic harp - it is a passion. (I am actually a former president of the Scottish National Harp Society of America SHSA)). I wanted to offer some recommendations for some harpists that I've loved listening to over the years. There are so many great harpists - so this isn't a comprehensive list - just some that I feel are great because of their skill and talent as a performer, or because of their unique ability as a composer or arranger. First, I'd like to suggest someone named Cynthia Cathcart. (http://www.cynthiacathcart.com) She is a Scottish US National Champion and professional musician. She plays the clarsach - which is the wire-strung harp played with one's fingernails. She is a small niche artist (even in the harp world), so any of her music from the "Alchemy of a Rose" album should be easy to get permission to play. (She does a great version of Brian Boru's March with the didgeridoo!) I'd also like to suggest Ann Heymann - who, in my opinion, is the finest wire-strung harp player in the world. She is credited with re-inventing the wire strung technique based on extensive research of the Bunting manuscript (Irish harp source) and other sources. My favorite album is 'Queen of Harps'. Another premier Scottish artist is Alison Kinnaird, who is considered one of the leading performers and researchers of the Scottish harp - her book "Tree of Strings" is a must-have for anyone doing historical harp research. Other artists that are absolutely wonderful and renown in the Celtic harp world include Deborah Friou, Kim Robertson, Robin Huw Bowen (Welsh triple harp), Cheryl Ann Fulton, Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Patrick Ball, Laurie Rasmussen, and, of course, some of the original leaders in the Celtic harp world, such as Derek Bell and Alan Stivell. There are so many wonderful harpists that I could name! I hope you do consider doing this podcast. There are some great Celtic harp musicians out there that I know your listeners would welcome learning about. With respect for all the wonderful things you do!"

I started this a number of years ago when I learned that DJs in the 70s would sometimes do they same. They would play an entire album from a band so you could hear what it was all about. I've done this with Jed Marum and Poitin. I'm actually restarting the Pub Songs Podcast and gonna share ALL of my albums on that podcast in the months to come. But today, I'm very pleased that Charmas were kind enough to allow me to share their brand new album. Elise, their piper, fiddler and band manager has been chatting with me for several months. She inspired me to listen to their new album. And it was beautifully made and a lot of fun. Elise tells me that Stark Raving Celtic is a concept album, best enjoyed from start to finish, with a lava lamp and a bottle of good whiskey. This diverse music collection opens with some mighty Irish and Scottish pub/comedy songs, including a blood-pumping anthem for Scottish Highland Athletes. Its instrumental tracks build from gentle melodies into full-on power sets, featuring various combinations of Great Highland Bagpipes, Scottish snare drum, Irish bodhran, African hand-drumming, bass and kit drums. The grand finale is modern Experimental fusion, still rooted in Celtic music, but exploring a new direction for this diverse, and intensely creative group of musicians. Now there's only one track not included in this show and that is not podsafe. That's their recording of "The Auld Triangle". It kicks off the show. Hopefully, this episode will inspire you to check out the band and find out more about them. You can find them at charmasband.com. They are on Facebook, you can follow them on Spotify, and Elise has made several playlists with theirs and others music. I'll add those to the shownotes as well. Here are Four Spotify Playlists by Charmas: Celtic Adrenaline Rush Fresh Irish and Scottish Celtic Comedy Celtic on Repeat (Beautiful Trance Music) World Fusion International Buffet Elise says she would love to add music from all your bands to these playlists. All they need to do is comprehend the etiquette: 1. LISTEN and pre-choose your best material for a particular playlist(s). 2. FOLLOW the playlist (this is just common courtesy. 3. THEN SEND your link(s) to the playlist curator. TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. I finished up a video challenge on YouTube last month. It was called Video Every Day in April. I happily completed the challenge. So you can watch 30 new videos in a playlist I created. They are not all music. Some are vlogs for Gunn Runners and others are for musicians. That said, I have a bunch of new videos I've released. Every Tuesday, I put out a new music video. Right now, it's just me singing songs. But in the future, I hope to have more produced official music videos. In the meantime, I hope you'll check out my videos of "She's Shiny", "Browncoat Baby", "Spancil Hill" "Jasper Tabby Kitty Cat-y", "Lord of the Pounce" and "Molly Malone". I think the videos are getting better. I'd love your thoughts. I released two new singles to Patrons. The one in April is a comedy song called "Why Do You Torture Me?". The May one is of the "Mingulay Cat Song". There's also a podcast all about that episode on Celtfather Music & Travel. Check the link in the shownotes for details.

That tune inspired the CD of the same name. The last CD, in fact, of Jed Marum. I was saddened last week when I learned that Jed passed away on May 2. He was 66 years old. Jed's music has been a big part of this podcast. He first showed up in show #13. But he quickly became an essential part of the show. He even allowed me to share some of his CDs, in their entirety, on the podcast. #42 featured Lonestar Stout. #91 featured Soul of a Wanderer. My first big experience with Jed Marum was at the Texas Scottish Festival in 2011. I shared a stage with him and Hugh Morrison other musicians. I'm not a super outgoing guy. But Jed approached me and made me feel like he did with everyone, like one of the family. He was kind and generous person. So today, I'm gonna highlight his music. I'll share of the music of others as well. But it's mostly about Jed. His passing is a great loss to the Celtic community. I want to celebrate his life with music. Several years ago Alec and Dan the founding brothers of Scythian, released a kids album for their 25 nieces and nephews called Cake For Dinner. It's a nice mix of traditional Irish songs like South Australia and The Littlest Jig, as well as folk and campfire songs from the U.S., French Canadian, Italian, and Ukrainian. Check it out at http://cakefordinnermusic.com. Plus their newest album Old Tin Can, is a return to their folk roots. A great band for all ages. Send me pictures of what you're doing or picture of one of your travels to Ireland or Scotland John Thompson wrote: Hey Marc, Two more excellent shows! I was surprised to hear you play Tam Lin by Coyote Run, although it was a great choice for Halloween. CR was an awesome band. They played the PA Ren Faire a lot. Between Wick and Flame is a fantastic album. They've got a bunch but two of my other favorites would be Places and Coyote Run Pleads the 5th. If there's any chance you can get a hold of some tunes from either one of those it would be great for your listeners. The fiddle special was amazing! Glad you got Burning Bridget Cleary in there. “Oh My Little Darling/Fire on the Mountain” by Burning Bridget Cleary from Pressed For Time -- also not your typical celtic music. But it definitely showcases their talent. I'm happy to help support this incredible podcast on Patreon. Keep up the great work! Hank Woodward wrote: Hi Marc, This is Hank in East Tennessee again, wishing a festive Halloween/Samhain season for you and your family. You continue to do a fantastic job with the podcast, and I’m eagerly awaiting the upcoming Celtic Halloween show. I’ve got my own “Samhain 2015” playlist put together and I’d love to get your opinion of it. Once again thank you so much for putting out all that phenomenal Celtic music for us all to enjoy. Slainte! Laurie Gardner wrote: Hello Marc! I am listening to one of your shows at the moment and decided to write you a quick note to say how much I enjoy your podcast. The music is always excellent. I studied traditional music as a teenager and sang with some wonderful artists. Even though I did not continue singing, (in public) I was captivated by Scottish music and tradition and still love listening and singing folk music. Your show has been the perfect way for me to stay connected to the traditional music world. For the past 8 years my husband and I have spent 2 weeks a year in the UK. We have been to such wonderful places. I love that you help more people visit as part of your dedication to a beautiful musical style. Thank you. The picture is from our most recent trip to the highlands. From the walls of the ruin of Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe in Dalmally. A gorgeous little place, well worth adding to one of your tours. I connected on Facebook with a gentleman named Kenny Grey who has a photographic business called Island Images. He and Krissy, his fiancée are amazing people and his pictures of the area are splendid. We had a great meal and pints of local ale at a coaching inn in Dalmally that could work for a group: http://www.glenorchylodge.co.uk . It has an excellent kitchen and a sweet game room style pub, a MacLeod behind the bar. If you get there tell him the Canadian couple from Ottawa say hi. Have a wonderful day! Laurie P.S. I typically put your show on while I bake or prepare food, especially long haul dishes like meatballs or breaded chicken. And also while editing photographs.
