Brett Ewing, chief market strategist at First Franklin Financial Services, says he's expecting "green lights from here" for the market with a lot of policy moves by the Trump Administration getting to where they are sorted out and where they will impact the market later in the year, including de-regulation efforts which he believes will be an active investment play. Ewing noted that the stock market has already hit 12 all-time highs this year "and I think we are going to hit a lot more before the end of the year," noting that he started 2025 with his price target for the Standard & Poor's 500 at 6,900, a level he still thinks will hold through some volatility and a possible correction before we reach the new year. Jason Akus, head of healthcare investing for Aberdeen Investments, says that current conditions for health care and biotech investing are making for "one of the most challenging, difficult and dislocated environments I've seen," but he sees "green shoots" for growth that could change the sectors' fortunes. Plus, personal finance journalist Brian O'Connor goes "Off the News" to discuss his recent New York Times story on how Americans spend their lives saving for retirement but have no plan for cashing out and managing their assets without running out of money.

Have you ever thought about your religious beliefs and where they came from, and how they shaped you as a person? What if the "traditional values" you grew up thinking were totally normal are actually part of a much darker system of control hiding in plain sight? Today I'm bringing you Tia Levings, New York Times bestselling author of "A Well-Trained Wife," and her story is going to blow your damn mind about religious trauma, Christian fundamentalism, and how the tradwife movement connects to patriarchal ideologies that are literally shaping our politics right now. From a mainstream Southern Baptist upbringing to the quiverfull movement, Tia's journey reveals how Christian patriarchy operates as a "cult within a cult" - your neighbors next door who looked a little conservative but were living under a completely different set of rules where abuse wasn't just normalized, it was sanctified.I've been chasing Tia down for a year and a half because her analysis of what's happening in our country today traces directly back to these core fundamental beliefs that have been patiently infiltrating mainstream America for decades. If you're wondering what the hell is going on in America, Tia's story is the key to decoding those invisible threads and figuring out how we move forward instead of backwards. What You'll Learn in This Episode:How mainstream Christianity can funnel people toward higher-control fundamentalist beliefsThe shocking reality of "Christian domestic discipline" and wife spanking in fundamentalist homesWhy the quiverfull movement aims to win the culture war through population controlHow the "fundy baby voice" is used to keep women sounding childlike and non-threateningThe hypersexualization tactics hidden behind modesty teachings in Christian patriarchyHow to recognize when political figures are using patriarchal manipulation techniquesWhy joy and happiness are actually forms of resistance against fundamentalist controlPractical ways to resist authoritarianism without burning yourself outTia's courage to tell the whole truth about Christian fundamentalism - including the secrets they don't want exposed - is exactly what we need right now to understand the forces shaping our reality. Her journey from controlled tradwife to fearless voice exposing religious trauma provides invaluable context about where our country is headed and how we can resist. Are you ready to stop normalizing the things that shouldn't be normal and start reclaiming your joy as an act of rebellion? Katie Kitamura joins Adam Biles to discuss her remarkable novel Audition. Centred on a middle-aged actress whose settled life is upended by a young man claiming to be her son, Audition blurs the lines between performance, identity, and narrative certainty. Kitamura reflects on the novel's dual structure—a “rabbit-duck” ambiguity—and her fascination with roles we perform in relationships, particularly within marriage and family. The conversation explores the mutability of identity, the ethical power of embracing contradiction, and the unique capacity of the novel to hold multiple truths simultaneously. Kitamura also discusses craft, genre, and the challenges of maintaining ambiguity without sacrificing narrative tension. An essential listen for readers drawn to fiction that resists easy answers and revels in complexity.Buy Audition: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/audition-3Katie Kitamura is the author of five novels, including Intimacies, named one of the 10 Best Books of 2021 by the New York Times. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 23, 2025 is: logy • LOH-ghee • adjective Like sluggish and groggy, logy describes a person who is not able to think or move normally because of being tired, sick, etc., or something that moves slowly and ploddingly. // The heavy meal left me feeling logy and in need of a nap. See the entry > Examples: "The picture moves at a stately pace that one supposes was considered period-appropriate but feels merely logy at times." — Glenn Kenny, The New York Times, 15 May 2025 Did you know? The origins of the word logy (sometimes spelled loggy) likely lie in the Dutch word log, meaning "heavy," a relation of the ancient German adjective luggich, meaning "lazy." The word shares no history with the log of campfires, which is centuries older and has probable Scandinavian roots. Likewise, it has no etymological connection to groggy, which describes someone weak and unsteady on the feet or in action. That word ultimately comes from the nickname of an English admiral: "Old Grog," concerned with the health of his crew, served diluted rum to his sailors, who returned the favor by dubbing the rum mixture grog. (Modern grog is typically rum, or another liquor, cut with water and served warm, sweetened, and with lemon.)

Kelefa Sanneh was born in England, and lived in Ghana and Scotland before moving with his parents to the United States in the early 1980s. He was a pop music critic at the New York Times from 2000-2008, and has been a staff writer at the New Yorker since then. His first book, just released on Penguin, is called Major Labels: A History of Popular Music in Seven Genres. The book refracts the entire history of popular music over the past fifty years through the big genres that have defined and dominated it—rock, R&B, country, punk, hip-hop, dance music, and pop—as an art form (actually, a bunch of art forms), as a cultural and economic force, and as a tool that we use to build our identities. Sanneh shows how these genres have been defined by the tension between mainstream and outsider, between authenticity and phoniness, between good and bad, right and wrong. Throughout, race is a powerful touchstone: just as there have always been Black audiences and white audiences, with more or less overlap depending on the moment, there has been Black music and white music, constantly mixing and separating. Sanneh debunks cherished myths, reappraises beloved heroes, and upends familiar ideas of musical greatness, arguing that sometimes, the best popular music isn't transcendent. Songs express our grudges as well as our hopes, and they are motivated by greed as well as idealism; music is a powerful tool for human connection, but also for human antagonism. This is a book about the music everyone loves, the music everyone hates, and the decades-long argument over which is which. Franz Nicolay is a musician and writer living in New York's Hudson Valley. His first book, The Humorless Ladies of Border Control: Touring the Punk Underground from Belgrade to Ulaanbaatar, was named a "Season's Best Travel Book" by The New York Times. Buzzfeed called his second book, Someone Should Pay for Your Pain, "a knockout fiction debut." He teaches at Bard College. Learn more about your ad choices. It's wedding season, at least in my family where it seems I'm attending a wedding every other week! It's been wonderful catching up with friends and family and watching how happy couples handle their nuptials. Each has been beautiful and unique. So please welcome to our show a true expert in the field of wedding photography, Gigi de Manio, who joins us to talk about her experience in putting out the event of your dreams and how to have that captured in photos. Gigi has photographed many celeb clients as well, including Chelsea Clinton, and I asked her what it was like capturing the moment her dad, former President Bill Clinton, walked her down the aisle. How do you get the perfect shot that also looks natural and unrehearsed? Gigi gives us some tips and tricks not only during our podcast, but she also talks about it in her beautiful book, SILVER Moments Into Memories, a stunning photo book from some of the weddings she's shot around the world. In fact, her work has been featured in People, Martha Stewart Weddings, Vera Wang on Weddings, Modern Bride and The NY Times, to name a few. Gigi is THE go-to expert when it comes to photographing weddings, and her story on how she got into the business is an interesting one. Let's just say it wasn't planned and that she fell into it during her college days. We'll talk about that, in addition to her growing up in Sarasota, my home town. In fact, I met Gigi through her identical twin sister, Jackie, an accomplished woman in her own right. And of course, being of Italian descent, we'll discuss some Italian traditions and inspirations she can share with us, too. Please join us on #DeborahKobyltLIVE on all video and audio podcast platforms. Our interview will also be simulcast on #TheSarasotaPodcast and #LittleItalyPodcast as well. Who isn't hoping for a quality partner to build a life with? Someone charming, reliable, with a great personality? But what happens when that sparkling personality is far darker around the edges than you realized? In her tensely thrilling new novel Don't Let Him In, author Lisa Jewell explores the layers of truth and deception unraveling before three women who find themselves tied together by a man who has more secrets than any of them bargained for. Nick Radcliffe seems to have it all – he's a man of substance and good taste, with a smile that could melt the coldest heart and a knack for putting others at ease. He's just what Nina Swann needed in her life after her husband's unexpected death. But Nina's adult daughter Ash has her suspicions. Nick seems too slick, too polished, too good to be true. Without telling her mother, Ash begins digging into Nick's past… and uncovers more than unsettling findings. Meanwhile, Martha is a florist living in a nearby town with her infant daughter and her devoted husband Alistair. It's a lovely little life, until Alistair starts traveling more frequently for work, disappearing for days at a time. Frustrated and looking for answers, Martha plants a tracking device in his car. But nothing could've prepared her for the ride that was to come. Nina, Ash, and Martha soon find themselves on a psychological collision course, hurtling toward a shocking truth far darker than anyone could have imagined. All three women are about to wish they had heeded the same warning: don't let him in. But it's certainly too late for that now – and the past won't stay buried forever. Lisa Jewell is a New York Times best-selling author of twenty-three novels, with work that has been translated into thirty languages. Her writing career has spanned more than twenty years, and she has spent over a decade focused on writing dark psychological thrillers, suspenseful mysteries, and crime fiction. Her previous books include None of This Is True, The Family Upstairs, and Then She Was Gone, as well as Invisible Girl and Watching You. Andrea Dunlop is the author of five novels, including The Mother Next Door: Medicine, Deception, and Munchausen by Proxy, and the host and creator of Nobody Should Believe Me, an award-winning investigative true crime podcast about Munchausen by proxy. This week, I'm joined by author Kelsey Osgood to discuss her recent book “Godstruck: Seven Women's Unexpected Journeys To Religious Conversion.” The book, which profiles women who traded secular lives for religious communities such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, evangelical Christianity, Quakerism, Orthodox Judaism, Saudi-based Islam, and even the Amish faith, is fascinating in its own right. But we also discuss Kelsey's previous book about her struggle with and recovery from anorexia, which overlaps with her religious transformation in some surprising ways. In that book, How To Disappear Completely, Kelsey wrote not just about anorexia itself but the culture surrounding it, notably the “peak sad girl” era of the late 1990s through early 2000s. The therapeutic approach that accompanied it, she argues, took universal human questions that have been asked for millennia and repackaged them as personal neuroses to be indulged and then solved — or, more often, deemed unsolvable. Her conversion to Judaism and participation in an Orthodox community helped reframe her entire way of thinking and changed her life for the better. GUEST BIO Kelsey Osgood is the author of How to Disappear Completely: On Modern Anorexia, which was chosen for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Program, and Godstruck: Seven Women's Unexpected Journeys to Religious Conversion, which came out in April from Viking. I am excited to share this conversation with Henry Shukman, a Zen master in the Sanbo Zen lineage and spiritual director emeritus at Mountain Cloud Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Henry is the co-founder of The Way meditation app and founder of the Original Love meditation program. He is the author of the books, Original Love: The Four Inns on the Path of Awakening and One Blade of Grass: A Zen Memoir, among other award-winning and bestselling books of poetry and fiction. He has taught meditation at Google and Harvard Business School and taught poetry at the Institute of American Indian Arts. His poetry has appeared in the New Yorker and the Guardian and his essays in the New York Times, Outside, and Tricycle. Henry has a master's degree from Cambridge and a master of letters degree from St. Andrews. As this biographical summary makes obvious, it's not like Henry hasn't been quite "discoverable", as a writer and meditation teacher but I only recently "discovered" him. And once I did, he has had a profound influence on me, as both a teacher and writer. In my conversation with him, I'll talk more about how I discovered him on Sam Harris' Waking Up app and how he became a primary teacher to me—even though we've never met—so stay tuned. In the conversation we talked about a wide range things, including: The "Four Inns on the Path of Awakening", the subtitle of his book Original Love (that is "Inns", as in lodging, or in this case, a refuge or shelter on the path of meditation): Mindfulness, support, absorption, and awakening. Meditation as a journey, or path, rather than an intervention—as Henry said, "a journey of a lifetime." Kensho or seeing the timeless, primordial or non-dual awareness that is the core of our very being. The importance of support in your practice, whether it is a teacher, community, or friend. Absorption or flow states in meditation.   And the "love" Henry refers to as something "endemic to our existence" … A great sense of belonging or union with everything. … And much more I know you will enjoy this conversation and Henry's clear, authentic, and gentle teaching style that I suspect will influence you, too, to bring more of Henry's guidance into your Dharma and meditation practice.

What's Next in AI, Self-Service, and Customer Service?  Shep interviews Jay Patel, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cisco's Webex Customer Experience Solutions. He talks about how AI and innovative technologies are transforming contact centers to improve both customer and employee experiences.  This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:    How is AI transforming the customer service experience?  How is AI improving self-service options for businesses?  Will AI ever fully replace human customer service agents?  How can AI help reduce burnout and attrition rates among contact center agents?  What risks should companies watch out for as they adopt AI in customer service?   Top Takeaways:    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way companies and customers interact. With advancements such as smarter self-service options and AI-powered voice agents, companies can now resolve customer issues more quickly and intuitively. This leads to a more seamless and satisfying experience for both customers and customer service agents.  Many customers still prefer to call customer service, despite companies offering self-service options. In this year's Customer Service & CX Research, we found that 68% of customers still prefer to talk to a live customer service agent. Some self-service options may not always be as effective as companies and customers want them to be. However, self-service is expected to improve as AI becomes more intuitive and capable of handling more complex problems. When it is easier to use and more effective in resolving issues, customers may grow to trust and utilize self-service more frequently. While self-service tools continue to improve, many customers will still prefer to speak with a representative, especially for complex or emotionally charged issues. AI-powered voice agents are set to become more advanced, handling conversations "just like humans," allowing customers to get resolutions without waiting for a human agent to become available.  Customer expectations are higher than ever. They expect immediate answers and help when they reach out to a company. Companies must keep pace with this demand by ensuring they offer customer care options that are quick, reliable, and easy to use.   AI just doesn't help customers. It also helps employees by making their jobs easier and more fulfilling. For example, AI is used to provide agents with call history, so customers don't need to repeat themselves, and it can give agents the information they need to solve the customer's problems efficiently.  As companies use more AI tools, keeping their data safe and secure is more important than ever. Strong security policies and data protection help build trust, allowing customers to feel more comfortable using digital services.  Jay Patel shares information about Cisco's WebexOne 2025 in San Diego, California, from September 28 to October 1, 2025. This event will highlight real-world customer successes and the latest innovations in AI-driven customer experience technology.  Plus, Shep and Jay discuss the future risks and responsibilities that come with rapidly adopting AI in customer service. Tune in!  Quote:   "We've been speaking  a lot longer than we've been typing, and I think the most profound technology change we'll see soon is that machines will be able to understand us through voice."  About:    Jay Patel is the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cisco's Webex Customer Experience Solutions business, responsible for product development, engineering, operations, and go-to-market.    Shep Hyken is a customer service and experience expert, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning keynote speaker, and host of Amazing Business Radio. On November 1, 1955, United Airlines flight 629 from Denver, Colorado to Seattle, Washington took off from Denver's Stapleton Airfield at 6:52 pm, carrying thirty-nine passengers and five crew members. Roughly ten minutes later, the aircraft exploded in the air, killing all forty-four people onboard and scattering fiery debris across several miles of Colorado's landscape.By the early 1950s, air travel had become a popular means of travel for more and more Americans and, while air disasters weren't unheard of, they nonetheless called into question the safety of traveling on a passenger flight. This time, however, investigators quickly determined that the explosion of flight 629 hadn't been an accident; someone had intentionally sabotaged the flight with a suitcase bomb. The explosion of United Airlines flight 629 marked the first time a passenger plane had been bombed in the United States, something few if any authorities ever thought would happen. In the event of an act of terror, an individual or group typically comes forward quickly to claim credit; however, in the case of flight 629, no one came forward and investigators were left to wonder, what possible reason could someone have for killing forty-four people with no obvious connection between them?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAnastasio, Jeff. 2024. Later in the episode, licensed therapist and New York Times bestselling author Nedra Glover Tawwab offers a clear, compassionate roadmap for navigating boundaries in relationships. Boundaries do not have to mean endings. In fact, boundaries can be a way for us to connect. Matt Richtel, health and science reporter at The New York Times, joins host Krys Boyd to discuss why kids today are more careful physically but need more help mentally, why they might be safer today but much less independent, and how parents can better relate during these developmental years. Emily Kircher-Morris talks with Dr. Christopher Willard, a clinical psychologist and author, about the complexities of life's major transitions. At this time of year, this is an especially-important conversation, as some students prepare for the shift to college life. They share their own experiences and provide advice on navigating the pressures of newfound independence, the importance of self-care, and the role of systemic support in easing major transitions. Yes, they also talk about farts, so this episode has something for everyone. TAKEAWAYS It's important to understand the mental health challenges that often arise during major life transitions. There's a role for social media in destigmatizing mental health issues, but it also spreads misinformation. Systemic support is essential in educational institutions, in order to better assist students, especially those from marginalized communities. It's important not to over-pathologize normal emotional experiences. There was a creative process behind Dr. Willard's children's book, "Feelings Are Like Farts," which uses humor to engage kids in understanding emotions. Let the courses in the Neurodiversity University help you be a better educator, parent, and/or clinician. Dr. Christopher Willard is a clinical psychologist, author, and consultant based in Massachusetts, with a global presence as a speaker in over 40 countries and two TEDx events. He is the author of 20 books on mental health and mindfulness, including Alphabreaths, Growing Up Mindful, Feelings Are Like Farts, and the upcoming College Mental Health 101 (2025). Dr. Willard's work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN.com, and mindful.org. In addition to his clinical and writing work, he teaches at Harvard Medical School, where he continues to shape conversations around mindfulness, emotional well-being, and mental health in education and beyond.
