Israel's government has agreed to the first phase of President Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of all remaining Israeli hostages. A ceasefire is expected to take effect within 24 hours, with hostage releases to follow within three days. Under the deal, Israel would free hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, begin withdrawing troops from parts of Gaza, and allow hundreds of aid trucks to enter the Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hailed the move as a 'momentous development' and thanked President Trump, as well as US aides Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Also: a man convicted of raping Gisèle Pelicot, the woman at the centre of a high-profile trial in France, has had his sentence extended; New York's Attorney General, Letitia James, has been indicted on federal charges of bank fraud; India's southern state of Karnataka has approved a plan to grant one day of paid menstrual leave per month; how a new AI arms race is transforming the war in Ukraine; a behind-the-scenes look at the race for the Nobel Peace Prize; and why the DNA of naked mole rats could hold the key to a longer life. The Global News Podcast brings you the breaking news you need to hear, as it happens. In 2001, a few months after 9/11, economist Jim O'Neill was working at Goldman Sachs when he wrote a report about which countries might become big players in the world economy. That's when he came up with the name BRIC - short for Brazil, Russia, India and China. At first, nothing much happened. But in 2009, those countries took his idea and ran with it, holding their first summit. Since then, the group has grown, adding South Africa to form BRICS.There are now 11 members, and it's been making headlines again, as U.S President Donald Trump threatens tariffs. Jim O'Neill speaks to Megan Jones about coming up with the acronym almost by accident and how he didn't think he'd still be talking about it almost 25 years later. Modern France and Britain were forged in the fires of the Hundred Years War, a century-long conflict that produced deadly English longbowmen, Joan of Arc’s heavenly visions, and a massive death toll from Scotland to the Low Countries. The traditional beginning and end of the Hundred Years' War are conventionally marked by the start of open conflict in 1337, when Edward III of England laid claim to the French throne – and France invalidated English claims to continental lands -- and its conclusion with the French victory at the Battle of Castillon in 1453, the fall of the last English holdings on the continent. But Michael Livingston, today’s guest and author of “Blood Crowns: A New History of the Hundred Years War” argues redefines the scope and length of the Hundred Years War, arguing it really lasted from 1292–1492. And it didn’t just engulf England and France, but into regions like the Low Countries, Italy, and the Holy Roman Empire. It spread to the whole European continent and, eventually, the globe as the war's end spurred European powers to pursue their imperial ambitions abroad. The Hundred Years' War was also a period of significant military innovation, particularly with the English longbow and the introduction of gunpowder Livingston revises our understanding of the Two Hundred Years War as one that set the stage for a new global imperial order with ripple effects across the centuries.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Leaders around the world have welcomed the ceasefire agreement. News of the deal was greeted with huge outbursts of joy in Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, where families have congregated for two years pressing for the release of Hamas captives. The overwhelming reaction in Gaza has been one of relief. Since the deadly October 7th attacks on Israel by Hamas, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza estimates that more than 67-thousand people have been killed by Israel's offensive with nearly a third of the dead under the age of 18. But there is also anxiety that, yet again, the ceasefire may not last. In other news, the former Radio 1 DJ, Tim Westwood, has been charged with rape and sexual assault. And the Home Office says it's "ramping up" its removal of migrants to France under a trial, one in one out scheme.

On this day in Tudor history, 10 October 1530, Thomas Grey, 2nd Marquess of Dorset, died. Soldier, jouster, courtier, and grandfather of Lady Jane Grey, he lived a life that perfectly captured the dangers and rewards of Tudor ambition. Born into royalty - grandson of Elizabeth Woodville and Katherine Neville, sister of the Kingmaker - Thomas grew up in the shadow of shifting alliances and rebellion. He was imprisoned by Henry VII, restored under Henry VIII, and rose again through charm, courage, and sheer survival instinct. - He dazzled at court tournaments, fought in France in 1513, escorted Mary Tudor to her French wedding, and bore the sword of state at the Field of Cloth of Gold. - He sat in judgment on the Duke of Buckingham, backed Henry VIII's annulment, and—when the tides turned—joined the charges against Cardinal Wolsey. - Yet behind the glitter was a man who fought feuds, faced imprisonment, and watched power slip as easily as it came. By his death, he was one of England's wealthiest nobles—and the patriarch of a line that would end in tragedy with Lady Jane Grey. Join me,  historian and author Claire Ridgway, for the remarkable story of a Tudor magnate who lived, fought, and schemed at the heart of power. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the West is committing suicide through weakness, appeasement, and open borders, allowing a fusion of Marxists and Islamists to exploit democratic systems via immigration. It is very important that we get the hostages out of Gaza, but it's also important that Hamas is destroyed, because they will come back again. It is an ideology that doesn't die, and the West doesn't understand the ideology, or people in the West don't want to deal with it.  Anti-Semitism is spreading in Western capitals, including New York. It's a gut cancer and President Trump is the only Western leader fighting it through actions on colleges, funding, and preventing U.S. decline like Britain and France.  Also, on the second anniversary of Hamas's October 7 attack Zohran Mamdani accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of launching a genocidal war in Gaza. Mamdani is a Marxist Islamist who camouflages his Hamas-loving agenda under civil liberties rhetoric.  Mamdani is silent on Muslim-on-Muslim violence in Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon by groups like Hezbollah. Later Jim Trusty calls in to discuss the lenient 97-month sentence given to Nichola Roske for attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June 2022. The Biden-appointed Judge Paula Xinis Boardman showed bias by factoring in Roske's transgender identity and leftist politics, imposing a term far below the 360-month-to-life guidelines. This kid glove treatment sets a dangerous precedent that could encourage copycat ideological attacks on constitutional figures. Trusty also criticizes lawfare tactics in Portland, where local officials submit polished affidavits claiming no need for the National Guard amid riots, downplaying issues like lasers and guillotines near ICE headquarters.  Finally, Speaker Mike Johnson calls in to explain that the Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, are using a government shutdown as a distraction and red herring to provide Schumer political cover against potential challenges from figures like AOC. The health care subsidy issue is a fabricated fight, as it was a COVID-era policy set to expire December 31 by Democrats themselves. Learn more about your ad choices. Two years later, the majority voted to return. Recent episodes explore everything from the death of Adolf Hitler, the first spacewalk and the making of the movie Jaws, to celebrity tortoise Lonesome George, the Kobe earthquake and the invention of superglue. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: Eva Peron – Argentina's Evita; President Ronald Reagan and his famous ‘tear down this wall' speech; Thomas Keneally on why he wrote Schindler's List; and Jacques Derrida, France's ‘rock star' philosopher. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Guys, it's here - the final episode of Life In The Peloton for 2025! This season has absolutely flown by; it feels like yesterday I was cracking open a Coopers at the Tour Down Under back in January getting warmed up for the year ahead, but here we are, the Il Lombardia of the podcasting calendar. I wanted to round the season out with a bang, so I've got a couple of very special guests this month. My old mates Daniel Friebe and Lionel Bernie - perhaps better known as the masterminds behind The Cycling Podcast - are on the pod, and we're going through everything cycling & podcasting from Armstrong to Zubeldia.  These guys are true legends of cycling journalism. They've been there on the ground at the Grand Tours for a decade now, and even before that have been covering races like the Tour de France since the 1990s! They have the sort of depth of knowledge that you only get when you've been inside the sport for generations, and their podcasts really show that. Long time listeners of either pod will remember when LITP was actually hosted by The Cycling Podcast way back in 2020 & 2021, from 2021 to 2024 the guys had me out in France making daily The Cycling Podcast episodes on the ground with other guest presenters like Ian Boswell, Richard Abraham, and Graham Willgoss. I learnt absolutely heaps from lifting the curtain seeing how these guys operate, and I feel like my own podcast stepped up a level thanks to their influence. In this ep, we go through the whole timeline of The Cycling Podcast, from the early days before the boys knew each other, right through to today and what's next! I feel like we really dig into how the sausage is made… Of course, The Cycling Podcast itself was founded by Lionel, Daniel, and the late - and very great - Richard Moore, who sadly passed away in 2022. Richard was a hero of mine, an innovator in podcasting, and an absolute pillar of cycling media. His influence can still be felt on the pod, and I loved hearing Daniel and Lionel's old stories of the total legend. There's a few Talking Luft style questions thrown in there for the boys too - worst ever meal on a bike race, best ever podcast guest (me, obviously…), cycling heroes, and more!  Guys, this year's been another absolutely massive one for the pod - and I've had a mega time producing these episodes for you to enjoy. Thanks so much for lending me your ears every month and listening to me yarn away with a whole host of guests. Don't despair - we've still got an episode of Life In The Peloton's Race Radio and The Race Communique to come before the end of October, then it's time to hang the mic up for a few months and enjoy an off season filled with bike riding, a few frothies, and making plans to make the pod even better in 2026.  Cheers! Mitch ----more---- I'll be heading to Adelaide this January for the Santos Tour Down Under - chasing the racing, riding the bunches in the morning, and soaking up all the summer vibes the city has to offer. Hope to see you there.

A Toast to Perry and Place Enjoy an intimate recording from the 2025 Totally Cider Tour_UK Edition. This unforgettable evening featured James Forbes of Little Pomona, leading guests through a cider dinner pairing in the Malvern Hills located on the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire in England. James presents both a welcome Perry, Ciders and a very special aperitif. We beging with Brut Rosé Perry, crafted from perry pears co-fermented with local damsons. James shared how whole damsons are fermented via carbonic maceration to extract their rich color and flavor before being pressed with early season pears. The result: a radiant sparkling Perry with deep fruit notes and remarkable finesse. “We actually ferment the damsons whole in CO₂ and then co-press them with the first pears. It gives a whole new layer of aroma and flavor.” — James Forbes A Cider for the Table Next up was a single varietal Stoke Red cider, a rarity from Little Pomona's usual blends. James described it as a “fully fermented” cider that is balanced and dry yet vibrant, with a whisper of natural sweetness from the Rural Method. This approach captures the cider before all sugars ferment out, creating harmony between acidity and fruit. Check out Wilding Episode with Sam Leach on the Rural Method “Stoke Red is one of my top three apples. In a less ripe vintage, that touch of sugar brings perfect balance.” Select Cider Apples Dinner continued with Egremont Russet, a still cider with a light sparkle. The russet's golden skin and nutty depth create an almost wine-like cider. Notes of pineapple, anise, and honey appeared with each sip, echoing the richness of the food and the rustic charm of the evening. “FOMO” Caps the Night Dessert brought out a treasure: Little Pomona's “FOMO”—a playful nod to France's Pommeau. Only 192 bottles were made, combining distillate from Bramley apples and Kingston Black juice aged in chestnut barrels. Kerry Lutz and John Rubino take a hard look at the shifting dynamics of gold and silver as inflation rises and fiat currencies continue to erode. John points to growing silver shortages—especially in Vietnam—that could spark panic buying and drive prices sharply higher. Both warn that manipulation in the silver market may finally be breaking down, setting the stage for major moves ahead. They discuss the danger of a paper silver default, Kerry's real-world experience buying silver below spot prices, and the unique arbitrage opportunities that come with it. The conversation broadens to the global picture, from France's unsustainable welfare system and ballooning debt to the U.S. government's fiscal cliff and the looming threat of a shutdown. They close by examining how AI's explosive growth and risky vendor financing could trigger the next shake-up in both tech and precious metals markets. “Why are you going to Okayama?” To be fair, we got this question more than once while traveling around Japan. I get it. It's not really a tourist hot spot like Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka. So when we told people where we were going, there were certainly a few raised eyebrows. But hear us out: Okayama is incredible! The city has enough things to do on its own like Okayama Castle, Korakuen Garden, and Kurashiki nearby! AND It's a top-notch base for day trips to Hiroshima, Naoshima Art Island, Himeji, and more! So in this episode, we're discussing the top things to do in Okayama Japan, best day trips from Okayama, and why we chose this lesser known city to spend 4 nights during our 2 week trip to Japan.   Relevant Links (may contain affiliate links, meaning if you make a purchase through these links, we earn a small commission-at no additional cost to you!): -Okayama Hotel (Koraku Hotel): https://booking.stay22.com/worldwidehoneymoon/PH-cUT2oZz -Fat Bear Week: https://explore.org/fat-bear-week -Donate to The Otis Fund for Katmai National Park: https://katmaiconservancy.org/donate   Traveling to France?
