What do the stubborn body fat you can't seem to lose, your hormones, and metabolic health all have in common? Well…a lot! If you're nearing perimenopause or menopause, you can't miss this conversation. In this episode, host Jenn Trepeck dives into a candid and clarifying conversation with leading health and wellness expert Ashley Fillmore. Ashley is the founder and president of Metabolic Fix and host of the Cheers to Your Success podcast. With nearly 20 years of experience, she helps women heal their metabolism, achieve hormone balance, and support lasting body composition changes. Together, they unpack why so many women still feel lost in the noise of wellness advice and how to make sense of what they're experiencing day-to-day, at each phase of their cycle and even as their cycles change.. This episode is all about discovering your hormone balance, transforming your body composition, and redefining what true health looks and feels like. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store.IN THIS EPISODE: (05:36) Ashley Filmore explains how she made the health, hormone balance, and body composition space her life's work(09:01) Ashley shares her experience with unhealthy dieting and deprivation(14:28) The number on the scale versus body composition, muscle mass, body fat percentage, and lean muscle(18:39) How certain hormones and body fat distribution correlate, and the importance of tracking your cycle(28:55) Ashley discusses symptoms that may indicate hormone imbalance(35:56) Adjustments to fitness routines and nutrition during your cycle(43:39) Other reasons your hormones can be depletedKEY TAKEAWAYS:The scale doesn't define health, but body composition does: A lower number on the scale doesn't accurately reflect your physical or mental well-being. Proper health is better measured by the balance between lean muscle mass and body fat percentage, which is significantly influenced by hormones that also determine where fat is stored—for example, cortisol can be associated with belly fat, insulin has been linked to love handles, and estrogen is often associated with weight stored in the hips and the lower belly.Where fat accumulates on your body can reveal significant hormonal imbalances, guiding lifestyle and nutritional changes as well as potential hormonal imbalances. Plus, even with a calorie deficit and strength training, stubborn fat won't budge unless you focus on nutrient-dense, whole foods—because it's not just about calories, but the quality of what you eat.Using cycle-tracking apps or devices like the Oura Ring helps women understand their hormonal rhythms, especially as cycles become irregular during perimenopause. By listening to your body, tracking symptoms, and identifying hormonal imbalances, you can tailor your nutrition, exercise, and recovery strategies to align with your current hormonal state, optimizing energy, mood, metabolism, and overall health.Walking and strength training are effective, low-stress ways to support hormonal and metabolic health, especially during perimenopause and menopause. Walking is a free, accessible exercise that improves body composition, hormonal balance, and mental well-being, while intense workouts may be too stressful when hormone levels are low. Incorporating gentle movements, such as yoga, and traditional strength training with compound exercises 2–3 times per week can help maintain health without overexertion.QUOTES: (25:34) “Get to know your body and your baseline, what's normal for you, as opposed to what your doctor might say is normal or common.” - Jenn Trepeck(16:57) “Your hormones matter. It's impacting everything: muscle mass, your body fat percentage and where your body fat is distributed on your body.” Ashley Fillmore(41:55) “Pay attention to how you feel because you may not be textbook, you may be a little outside of what I just mentioned, and that could be normal for you.” Ashley Fillmore(42:48) "The walking, the yoga, the more gentle exercises are probably going to be more effective and feel better when we're in that perimenopause or menopause phase.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramCheers to Your Success! 5/25/25 Upcoming Memory Engine-The "Heart Palace Flow" Daily Affirmation: Cutting Through StressThe goal of this mnemonic is to instantly activate a state of calm and love, like a "hot knife through butter," by firing up your internal "Heart Palace" engine. We want this to be a positive, active, and empowering process. This affirmation is positive, action-oriented, and clearly states the desired outcome. This word is simple, powerful, and embodies the positive movement we're aiming for.L - Luminous: See a bright, glowing presence.O - Open: Feel your heart center expanding.V - Vibrant: Experience lively, positive energy.E - Expand: Visualize feelings spreading outwards.W - Warmth: Feel comforting, soothing heat.I - Inner Peace: Sense deep tranquility.N - Nourish: Feel revitalized and supported.S - Serene: Experience a profound state of calm. We'll use the Major System to convert "LOVE WINS" into numbers, which then give us our P.A.O. elements.L (5) V (8) = 58 -> LoVe = LAVaW (sound is like V or a doubled U, for simplicity let's use the standard 'W' as 2, or sometimes 'null' in Major System for words without a consonant sound. For this exercise, let's treat it phonetically as 'V' or 'F' sound when needed, or directly find a word. Given the context, let's just make sure the words fit the number.)N (2) S (0) = 20 -> NoSe = NoseLet's simplify the Major System application here for a more direct, vivid P.A.O. that aligns with the affirmation:Person: Lady Valentine (representing love and warmth)Action: Waving Iridescent Nimbus (a radiant, flowing, protective cloud)Object: Silver Sword (cutting through negativity)Imagine Lady Valentine (P), bathed in a soft, luminous green glow, standing at the entrance of your magnificent Heart Palace. She is gracefully waving an iridescent nimbus (A) that billows outward, gently pushing away any lingering shadows of stress. In her other hand, she wields a shimmering silver sword (O), which, with each gentle pass, cuts through any stress like a hot knife through butter, leaving only smooth, serene space. As she moves, your heart feels increasingly open, a vibrant energy bubbles up, and that feeling begins to expand outward from your chest. A profound warmth spreads, ushering in an inner peace that nourishes every cell of your being, leaving you utterly serene.Morning Activation: First thing in the morning, or before a potentially stressful event, close your eyes (or soften your gaze).Affirmation & Visualization: Slowly repeat: "I activate my Heart Palace, flowing with love, melting all stress."Engage the Mnemonic & P.A.O.: Instantly bring to mind Lady Valentine at your Heart Palace, waving her iridescent nimbus, and cutting through stress with her silver sword.Feel the Flow (The "LOVE WINS" Modes): As you visualize, actively engage your senses and emotions:Breathe into it: Continue to breathe deeply and smoothly, allowing the sensations and imagery to deepen the experience. This active, multi-sensory engagement, fueled by your P.A.O. and mnemonic, trains your brain to rapidly access this coherent state, turning an affirmation into an embodied experience. Here are the top-tier options for this specific deep dive, Grandpa Bill:#HeartPalace,#DailyAffirmation,#MemoryEngines,#MagneticMemoryMethod,#GrandpaBillPodcast.#BHSalesKennelKelpHolisticHealingHour,#HeartBrainCoherence,#StressRelease,#InnerPeace,#VividImagery,#PAOMnemonic,#MajorSystem,#MindBodySpirit,#HolisticWellness,#PositiveMovement,#MentalClarity,#EmotionalRegulation,#SelfCare,#LOVEWINS,The Core Affirmation: "I activate my Heart Palace, flowing with love, melting all stress."The Mnemonic Word for the Affirmation: "LOVE WINS"P.A.O. Grandpa Bill! is quite excited to talk with Tam's about what I am calling her "Energy Sketch" page it is a real gem within her Energy Almanac, offering a visual gateway to the monthly energies. The fact that it runs chronologically from January through December with bold images and characters focuses quite nicely on Energy Healing speaking volumes about her integrated approach, as well as my own. The connection to Janet Hickox's "Astro-Inklings" – which I love, it's a wonderful moniker from(My old marketing days and business days), by the way, "Creative Solutions for Holistic Healthcare Products Distribution" – hopefully further highlights this collaborative spirit! I love that Tam and I tape on the same day she and Janet record "Astro-Inklings", I feel it creates a beautiful synergy, almost like two sides of the same insightful coin. This is a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE, with my bff from middle and high school! Is bff still a thing, or just for kids of the 80s and 90s? If it's the latter and you “get it,” then you'll enjoy this episode even more because not only do we get into truly fascinating and engaging insights on holistic health, but we sprinkle in some 90s and high school references. In fact, the last 1/3 or so of the episode is just some of my favorite funny stories from youth, in which Michelle played a vital role. In addition to being a dear friend, Michelle Doel is also a National Board-Certified Functional Medicine Health Coach and the founder of Vertical Horizons, a teen wellness company dedicated to empowering adolescents to take charge of their mental, physical, and emotional health. In this episode, we explore the profound impacts of nutrition and mindset on overall health, with a special focus on gut health, stress reappraisal, and teen wellness. Michelle shares her inspiring journey from battling gut dysbiosis to empowering teens and athletes through holistic health practices. Discover actionable tips for improving skin health without conventional medicine, managing stress, and fostering resilience in young athletes. And even more wild that I made this announcement today which starts Nurses Appreciation Week. Happy Nurses Week! This episode is dedicated to that, but also a little spin. "I do see that I can't maintain this pace anymore. And so I'm definitely finding myself sort of sitting back and letting others take over a little bit, which is really what I need to be doing." - Anna RudelToday, Anna and Kendall share recent updates from their wellness clinics, offering listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the real challenges and triumphs of running holistic healthcare practices. The conversation begins with Anna's hilarious yet relatable story about a morning alarm fiasco that highlights an important business lesson: the danger of creating different systems for ourselves versus our teams. This perfectly illustrates how even experienced business owners can fall into process-oriented pitfalls when not practicing what they preach."How many of us have been growing our practices from forever ago and have one rule for us and another rule for everybody else?" Anna reflects, pinpointing a common leadership blind spot.Kendall counters with her own unexpected emergency—a surprise fire department visit that prompted important discussions about safety protocols and team training. These real-world scenarios emphasize the necessity of comprehensive safety planning in healthcare settings. The hosts then dive into exciting business developments, with Anna celebrating the successful launch of her massage wing with "80% booked already" and Kendall sharing positive updates about team culture at Vancouver Wellness Studio. They discuss strategic hiring, community engagement through women's leadership conferences, and the importance of self-care for business owners.Throughout the conversation, both leaders offer valuable insights on patient experience, team collaboration, and the constant evaluation needed when expanding alternative healthcare practices—all while maintaining the trust and elevated experiences their clients expect.Get all the links, resources and show notes here: https://wellnesscentercreators.comSponsored by Jane App, Jane offers online booking, charting, scheduling, secure video and invoicing on one secure, beautifully designed system: https://jane.app/ Use code wellness1mo for a one-month grace period on your new Jane account.
