--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/audiostretto/message

Wer glaubt hier an Zufälle?

Ing. “My generals know nothing about the economic aspects of war.” – Adolf Hitler In the episode, we take a look at the German generals of World War II. With the imagery of Blitzkrieg occupying a prominent place in WWII histories, the reputation of the German generals as exceptional military commanders has persisted despite defeat. Growing up in the United States during the 1980s, I always thought it was fascinating that I knew the names of far more German generals from WWII than those of American generals. Is their lofty reputation warranted? Were they better than their Allied counterparts who defeated them? Could the war had gone differently if Adolf Hitler heeded their advice?

Dat harr man ook ni dacht: No föfftig Johr Freedensbewegung kümmt dat mitmol weller in Mod‘ 'n anstännige Armee to hebben. So'n verrückten Krom kann man sick alleent gor ni utdinken. Un as Verteidigungsminister Kalle zu Guttenberg noch 'n Doktertitel harr, hett he 2011 de Wehrplicht utsett. Mit de Gorch Fock, so schmuck se ook is, kann man overs leider keen Gegner Bang‘ moken. Guttenberg, von der Leyen, AKK un wo se all heeten doht, hebbt dat Kommando „stillgestanden“ anschiend in falschen Hals kreegen. Panzers un Jagdfleegers kann man ni mol even bi Penny kööpen. Un wohen ook mit all den Krom? Man good, dat wi in de Nato sünd. Hmm, veellicht harr man de 100 Milliarden leever rechtiedig in de Freedensbewegung steeken schullt... In düssen Sinn

In this Edition of CWP, James and I catch up after a month off the air by recounting our adventure at Lard, Eh?, the first Canadian wargaming event (to our knowledge) dedicated exclusively to Too Fat Lardies miniatures games. We're joined by our friend and one of Lard, Eh?'s organizers, Chris Robinson. Our conversation covers the planning of this event in the time of plague and whether it bodes well for the reopening of the live wargaming convention scene in the Great White North. James and I also talk about our reactions to O Group; BLUF, it's fun, it makes your noggin a bit sore trying to figure it out, but it's an exciting game and very good at putting the player in the role of a battalion commander without worrying about which section has so many 2" smoke rounds left. In the Canadian Content Corner, we're joined by our friend Dr. Brad St. Croix, making his second appearance on CWP. We recorded this conversation on Dec 9 (the Defence and Fall of Hong Kong began on Dec 8, 1941), so it's a fitting date to speak to Brad about his speciality, the Canadian role in Hong Kong and the way it's been obscured over the years by some unfortunate historiography. Though Brad isn't himself a wargamer, he was a good sport and helped us work through the battle and how it might be modelled on the table top. Rumour has it that Mike ran straight from the interview to the Peter Pig website to grab some 15mm Japanese infantry! Continuing the CWP tradition of finishing with some relevant Canadian military music, we end the episode with the march of the Royal Rifles of Canada, one of the two gallant Canadian battalions that were destroyed in the battle. Sophie (age 8) and Ellie (age 6) tell the story of Blitzkrieg – how the Germans used tanks to conquer much of Europe at the start of World War Two. In World War One Britain invented the tank. America, Russia and Britain used tanks to defeat Germany. However, after the war people in those countries did not want to fight any more wars. They made their armies small. They also decided to defend in the future not to attack. The French built a line of forts for defence. They did not have many tanks and those they did have they used for defence. The Germans though had other plans. After Hitler came to power his built a powerful army for Germany again. This army had many tanks. The German generals invented a new way of fighting. It involved lots of tanks in one place smashing through the enemy lines. They would be helped by planes and paratroopers. They called this type of fighting, Lighting War. In German that is Blitzkrieg. It relied on their tanks – in German they were called Panzers. The Germans invaded Poland. The Blitzkrieg worked. They crushed Poland with his cavalry and old fashioned army. Next the Germans attacked France. They smashed through the French lines. The British ran away and the French surrendered. The battle was followed by an air battle over Britain. This saw many German planes destroyed and the British one. Next the Germans attacked Greece. Again the Blitzkrieg worked. Then they attacked Crete. Crete was an island and the British Royal Navy controlled the seas so the German used their paratroopers. They won the battle but many of the paratroopers were killed. Now the Germans had lost mucg of their airforce and their paratroopers. However, they still had their tanks. Next they attacked Russia. At first, the Blitzkrieg worked again. However, the Russians had developed their own excellent tank called the T-34. They were also happy to attack the Germans. There were huge tank battles in Russia. Slowly the Russians started to win. Then America joined the war. She had learned from the Germans how to use tanks. The British had also now learned. As the British and Americans fought the Germans they used their massive tank armies and many planes to defeat Germany. The War was won. On the third episode of The Panzer Podcast we will discuss in detail the final preparations and modifications made just prior to sending the new Panzerkampfwagen V 'Panther' Ausf. D, Sd.Kfz. 171 to the Eastern Front. Once there, we will get into the details of Operation Citadel and just how well or, not so well, the new Panther tanks would do against a determined defense. We detail the actions of July 5 - July 20 1943 for Panzer-Regiment 39 "von Lauchert" and within, the two Panzer-Abteilungen 51 & 52 (Panther Abteilungen). Further details include the Kriegsstärtkenachweisung (K.St.N. [TO&E]) of the new Panther units as well as plenty of contemporary, and first-hand accounts of how the battle went for these particular units at Kursk and the surrounding areas. In the second episode of the Podcast we continue where our discussion of the Panther left off-- Covering what the Panther D actually would like once production of the Ausf. D began, which in January of 1943 would be a lot different from the Panzerkampfwagen V 'Panther' Ausf. D, Sd.Kfz. 171 that would first go into Kursk. We'll take an in-depth look at all of the systems and final armament & armor layout of the Panther and get ready for the first deployment in July of 1943. Vídeo Original en You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJi9xeucKXs&ab_channel=HistoriasB%C3%A9licasQueMerecenSerContadas
General Hoths' 6th Panzer division is about to roll into Myshkova where he would be joined by the 17th Panzer Division. They had started Operation Winter Storm on the 12th December in a last ditch push to save the Sixth Army trapped in Stalingrad and by the 14th had made good progress. The Russian force guarding the approach route was the 51st Army but it had been reduced to about half its strength since the break-through in November where they'd been part of the Red Army that had enveloped General Paulus and at least 200 000 men inside the Kessel – to the west of Stalingrad. He was surrounded and Field Marshal Manstein was trying to help him break out by breaking in. The problem was, Manstein had no means of knowing what was in Paulus' mind. At some point he hoped the trapped General would order the Sixth Army to move towards him and crush the Russians between their two pinces, allowing, hopefully most of the Germans to escape West. But Paulus was awaiting Hitler's order – and Hitler was determined the Sixth Army was going nowhere. So by the 14th the Panzers were making good progress = the ground was hard and although tanks slip and slid, it wasn't the cruel thick mud they were facing but sub-zero conditions which made the going easier. At first sight the steppe to the south west of the Kessel appeared flat, but that was deceptive. It was criss-crossed by a network of both deep and shallow gullies, a bit like the wadis of north Africa, or part of the veld in South Africa. The snow had drifted into these gullies and the Russians were lying in wait here. Sometimes up to a battalion in strength and with a full component of heavy weapons. The Russian cavalry kept its horses in these gullies during the day, sheltered from the freezing winds and rode out at night when the air was still to harass the German flanks along with mortar and machine-gun fire. At times, most likely at night or at dawn, isolated groups of T-34s would attack the columns forcing a halt for a few hours. The sky was iron-grey and the overcast ceiling was five hundred feet, effectively grounding von Richthofen's Luftwaffe. In the rear of this approaching army were the engineers struggling to keep up – it was a soft tail of around 800 trucks, lagging behind its armoured carapace as historian Alan Clarke put it. After four days of fighting Manstein's soldiers were still on the way to Stalingrad but the attack slowed to a snail's pace. Around the village of Sogotskot for example, the 6th Panzer had been forced turn west in an attempt to out-flank the enemy. The Russians had prepared a vast network of rifle pits that made it impossible for the tanks to advance. After point-blank firing into these pits, panzers were put to flight by T-34s which arrived at twilight. On the 16th December a hard and bitter wind began to blow from the north east. Everything was rimmed with frost, telegraph lines, stunted trees, the debris of war, corpses, burned out tanks, shattered trucks, horse carcasses. The ground froze so hard that footsteps began to sound like soldiers were walking on metal. The sunset that night was described as intensely beautiful, a vivid red while the white landscape turned a kind of arctic blue. IN Stalingrad late that afternoon every Russian along the Volga shore that day had heard a wonderous sound – a crashing noise that led to 62nd Army commander Vassili Chuikov bolting from his cave to witness a glorious sight. An enormous wave of ice was pushing down past Zaitsevski Island, smashing everything in its path.

This is episode three, the Reich attacks with fingers instead of a fist. We are building up to the start of the Battle of Stalingrad by describing how the initial phases of the invasion of Russia by the Germans' led inexorably to the city with Stalin's name. Alexander Werth was a British journalist based in Moscow as the German army approached in 1941 and he describes how quickly the city went from being relatively normal including cigarette and food vendors on most street corners to mounting terror and food shortages within a week. Most of the men had been called up when war began so women and young teens were in the fields, but the invasion had an almost catastrophic effect on Russian food supplies. Before the war, the territory overrun by the Germans had produced 38 percent of the cereals, 84 percent of the sugar while also containing 38 percent of the cattle and 60 percent of the pigs. By January 1942 the number of cows in the Soviet Union had dropped from just under 28 million to 15 million. Now the forces of the Third Reich were on their way to Moscow, following the same road that Napoleon had taken 140 years before. The orders given to Field Marshal von Bock's Army Group Centre was to encircle and destroy the enemy in Belorussia before heading on to the Soviet Capital. Z` Two deep thrusts were to be made, one in the north starting from East Prussia, and the other to the South from the area of Brest-Litovsk close to the Pripet Marshes. These are also known as the Pinks Marshes and are a vast are a vast natural region of wetlands along the forested basin of the Pripyat River with Kiev to the southeast. It is one of the largest wetland areas of Europe occupies most of the southern part of Belorussia or Belarus and the north-west of Ukraine. The marshes undergo substantial changes in size during the year, with melting snows in springtime and autumn rainfall causing extensive flooding as the river overflows. It is a geographical feature that armies had learned to respect over thousands of years. The Army Group Centre was split in two – one thrust was to be made by the 9th Army under Strauss in the north along with twelve infantry divisions were involved along with Hoth's 3rd Panzer Group. Army Group Centre's Field Marshal von Kluge led the 4th Army in the southern arm of Army Group Centre with 21 infantry divisions supported by Guderian's 2nd Panzer Group. The Panzers both to the north and south were to drive deep wedges in the form of two pincers into the enemy positions far to their rear and then joining in a double enveloping movement at Minsk. That was the capital of Belorussia and was 250 miles inside Soviet Territory. Then the two great pockets of Soviet soldiers were to be destroyed before the armies turned their beady eyes on Smolensk. That was the historical main city on the road to Moscow. However, there were problems from the start when it came to strategy. Von Bock thought it a complete waste of time and wanted to push directly for Smolensk. But Hitler wanted the two armies to take Minsk first, then halt at Smolensk so that the Panzer formations could be reassigned and head north to assist Army Group North besieging Leningrad. On the Soviet side, the unfortunate General Pavlov led the Red Army facing these two powerful German thrusts. When he was informed the German Infantry was approaching Minsk, he ordered his reserves forward which doomed them. He and the Russian leadership were not yet aware of a new form of encirclement - the double Panzer pincer which was to surround 3rd and 10th Armies. Instead of a single push past the Red Army – there would be two like a double ripple which was an extremely clever way of cutting off retreat.
This week is the anniversary of the 1940 evacuation at Dunkirk in World War Two. Sophie (aged 7) and Ellie (aged 5) tell the story of how against all the odds the British army was saved from the Dunkirk beaches. ----more---- Hitler’s plans for victory in World War Two are thwarted as the British Army makes its escape. The story is full of twists and turns so extraordinary that it became known as the Miracle of Dunkirk. We feel the fear as the German tanks close in on Dunkirk thanks to their Blitzkrieg tactics. Sophie and Ellie put themselves in shoes of a British solder waiting on the beaches for rescue. An original song brings the excitement to life as the Small Ships come into view. Afterwards Winston Churchill reminds the country that wars are not won by evacuations. Songs, music, sound and humour bring the story to life. Germany attacks Poland We learn about the Blitzkrieg tactics The Germans outflank the Maginot line The Panzers race behind the British and French Armies The British and French fall back on Dunkirk The French buy time with a brave defence at Lille Hitler give his “Halt” order to the Panzers. We explore the different reasons why Hitler gave this order The Royal Navy tries to rescue the soldier from the beaches We discuss why this was so difficult The call goes out for the small ships to help. We experience life on board one of the small ships as it faces German air attack We learn what people thought back home of the soldiers Winston Churchill’s words ring out across time as we hear his actual radio address Britain may have got her army home, but we learn how it is denuded of tanks and equipment. When Clarence Smoyer is assigned to the gunner’s seat of his Sherman tank, his crewmates discover that the gentle giant from Pennsylvania has a hidden talent: He’s a natural born shooter. At first, Clarence and his fellow crews in the legendary 3rd Armored Division—“Spearhead”—thought their tanks were invincible. Then they met the German Panther, with a gun so murderous it could shoot through one Sherman and into the next. Soon a pattern emerged: The lead tank always gets hit. After Clarence sees his friends cut down breaching the West Wall and holding the line in the Battle of the Bulge, he and his crew are given a weapon with the power to avenge their fallen brothers: the Pershing, a state-of-the-art “super tank,” one of twenty in the European theater. But with it came a harrowing new responsibility: Now they will spearhead every attack. In this episode I'm speaking with Adam Makos, author of “Spearhead.” It's the story of an American tank gunner’s journey into the heart of the Third Reich, where he will meet destiny in an iconic armor duel—and forge an enduring bond with his enemy.

By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War. Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Achtung Panzer! argues how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

Welcome to the sixteenth episode of The Two Tankers and A Cat Podcast! Charley and I attempt to make the case for the German Panzer III and Stug III that was a huge part of the German arsenal during World War II. We talk about the shortfalls of the 37mm guns that were originally mounted on the Panzers, and how the outcome of World War II may have been much different if the Panzers would have been fitted with a bigger gun from the start. March 27, 2019 - Mr. Steven Zaloga Late in January 1945, through the snowy forests and farms of the Ardennes, the cream of Hitler's remaining army struggled through a muddy retreat, defeated in the final offensive the Wehrmacht attempted during World War II. The stubborn American victory over Hitler's “Autumn Mist” attack was by no means a foregone conclusion when the German command launched the attack a month earlier. Actions by the U. S. Army's 1st, 2nd, and 99th divisions from the very start of the offensive stymied the push of the 12th SS Panzer Division on the roads to the essential port of Antwerp. In this lecture, Mr. Steven Zaloga presents a talk based on his newest book, Smashing Hitler's Panzers: The Defeat of the Hitler Youth Panzer Division during the Battle of The Bulge. Mr. Zaloga argues that the defeat of the 12th SS Hitlerjugend Division in the opening hours and days of the offensive were essential to the over-all failure of the German Ardennes Campaign.
