Sitting quietly at the back of a crowded GE conference room, a young Sandra Wallach diligently took notes during an executive briefing. As one of the newest inductees into GE's esteemed Financial Management Program (FMP), she was eager to absorb every detail. Unbeknownst to her at the time, this moment marked the beginning of a transformative 17-year journey with General Electric."FMP allowed me to figure out what I really like to do, what I gravitate towards, and what I'm not as interested in," she reflects. From aircraft leasing to manufacturing finance, each rotation broadened her expertise and honed her adaptability.GE's approach to talent development was immersive and expansive. Wallach continues, "I had 10 different roles in nine different physical locations over my time." This constant movement not only built her resilience but also provided her with a holistic understanding of GE's diverse businesses. The culture emphasized being an integral part of the senior leadership team and driving change. "They expected me to be able to speak to the business almost as well as the leader that I was supporting," she notes. This high standard pushed her to develop skills beyond traditional finance roles. Along the way, Wallach says GE's culture exposed her to the personal attributes that would become increasingly critical as she advanced into leadership positions. "Do you have personal edge? Can you make the tough calls? Do you have personal energy?" she explains. Serving as a Master Black Belt and later as a pricing executive, she stepped outside traditional finance roles, gaining valuable insights that would later prove essential in the C-suite.Beyond GE, Wallach tells us there were still a few boxes to check before she could step into a CFO role. Positions at Intuit and MiaSole provided her with exposure to Silicon Valley's fast-paced culture and the opportunity to work directly with boards and investors. These experiences, coupled with her GE foundation, ultimately paved the way for her appointments as CFO of Amprius Technologies.
My guest for Episode #518 of the Lean Blog Interviews Podcast is Jerry Wright, author of the new book The Insanity Trap: What Your MRP Consultant Won't Tell You. Jerry M. Wright, PE, MBA, is an accomplished operations executive and teaching professional with over 39 years of experience in the manufacturing and service sectors. His extensive career spans various industries, including aerospace, consumer goods, healthcare, medical devices, diagnostics, and industrial sectors, where he has held leadership roles in engineering, operations, quality assurance, and operational excellence (OpEx). He is an expert on taking businesses from MRP "insanity" to Pull Systems (Kanban) and driving operational excellence through the implementation of Toyota Production Systems (TPS/Lean) tools and methods. He's a Master Black Belt and only the 7th person in the world to receive the Lean Gold Certification (LGC) from the joint alliance of ASQ, AME, SME, and the Shingo Institute. In this episode, Jerry shares his insights and hard-earned lessons about the pitfalls and inefficiencies of Material Requirements Planning (MRP). Jerry reflects on his career, starting with his early Lean experiences at Kimberly Clark, where he encountered the challenges of forecasting, production scheduling, and the recurring "insanity trap" of MRP. He discusses the implementation of Kanban systems, the impact on inventory management, and how turning off MRP systems helped teams dramatically reduce shortages and excess inventory. Through real-life examples, Jerry illustrates how companies can shift from traditional MRP-driven processes to more effective demand-driven and Kanban-based systems, leading to operational improvements, better employee engagement, and more reliable supply chains. The episode also touches on the psychology of change management, navigating the resistance from those invested in outdated systems, and how leadership can foster a more adaptive, efficient environment by embracing simplicity over complexity. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: What is your Lean origin story? Were your parents open to Kaizen opportunities or suggestions from you as a child? Was your first introduction to the "insanity trap" of MRP at Kimberly Clark? Can you describe the challenges of dealing with MRP at Kimberly Clark? What was Bill Holbrook's role when he suggested unplugging the MRP? How did your team transition from MRP to Kanban, and what were the results? Can you explain the issues with relying on forecasts and lead times in MRP systems? What do you think about demand-driven MRP as an alternative? Why do you think demand-driven MRP isn't more widely adopted? How do you balance the risk of excess inventory versus lost sales? How did Dell handle material constraints and lead time reduction when you were there? How does Toyota manage its supply chain and production planning without relying heavily on MRP? Can you talk about how Toyota's system recovers quickly from supply chain disruptions? What was the origin of your book The Insanity Trap? How can leaders and companies overcome the psychological barriers to changing their supply chain systems? How do you help employees transition from roles like expediting to managing Kanban systems? What are your thoughts on the promise of AI in demand forecasting and supply chain management? Who is the target audience for your book? What are your thoughts on supply chain planning versus execution in lean environments? One of RX's largest and most important events globally, JCK has thrived under Bachmann's leadership. Bachmann directly manages JCK while overseeing Event Leaders on both Luxury and JIS and has steered JCK to become an industry leading, award-winning event in the trade show industry, and the most important jewelry buying and educational event globally for the jewelry industry. Luxury, the curated, invitation-only event taking place alongside JCK has also been reimagined under Bachmann's portfolio as the event for the luxury jewelry community. JCK and Luxury bring over 30,000 industry professionals together, including 18,000+ vetted attendees from over 100 countries and 2,000 exhibitors, ranging from designers, manufacturers, and gemstone wholesalers to packaging companies and technology service providers. The show covers 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space at the iconic Venetian Expo and The Venetian Las Vegas. Under her leadership in event strategy, planning, execution, sales, attendance, acquisition, marketing, public relations, operations and special events, Bachmann has achieved all-time high ratings for both exhibitor and attendee satisfaction, loyalty and net promotion for both JCK and Luxury, increasing scores between 15 to 20% and over 30 points in NPS overall. Furthermore, under her strategic and creative direction, JCK has led the way in becoming a top experiential event that attendees not only consider necessary for their business but also eagerly anticipate attending. In the digital realm, Bachmann led the team in bringing JCK to the industry virtually in 2020, with the JCK Virtual show being a pioneer in launching digital offers in light of the pandemic limiting face-to-face events. In March of 2021, Bachmann led the team to bring back the first show for RX US, JIS, and continued to forge the team ahead in bringing back in-person JCK and Luxury events in August as some of the first large scale trade shows returning to face-to-face, all to great success. New to Bachmann's achievements are leading the JCK team in exceeding pre-pandemic 2019 show levels before most shows, in both sales revenue, attendance, and much higher NPS and customer satisfaction scores, with the 2022 edition marking a milestone year in the event's history and winning Trade Show Executives Gold 100 “Greatest Trade Show” of the year award. This was then followed up under Bachmann's leadership with the 2023 edition continuing to grow to a sold out show floor and increasing attendance once again. As a member of RX's senior leadership team, Bachmann plays a critical role in shaping event leaders across RX US, leading bi-monthly Event Leader meetings where key issues are discussed and best practices are shared across the division leaders. Bachmann also leads the way with activations and experiences, playing a crucial part of JCK and serving as a model for other B2B events, along with increasing the focus on DE&I in all the industries she serves forging partnerships with key members of diverse groups including the Black in Jewelry Coalition and leading by example at her shows and RX. Bachmann utilizes her experience in change management by serving as the Executive Sponsor and liaison for the show teams with the digital team during RX's roll out of a new registration system across RX US. Video Version https://vimeo.com/stateofreadiness/norbert-majerus About the Podcast Hello and welcome to another edition of State of Readiness with your host, Joseph Paris. My guest today is Norbert Majerus; Author of “Lean-Driven Innovation” and “Winning Innovation” and a Lean Champion (Ret) from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He confesses that he went into engineering because he didn't like to working with people and felt that a career in engineering would find him in the corner of a room with a computer and being left alone to do his work. It did not quite work out that way. Norbert spent most of his career at Goodyear's Innovation Centers. Having first been introduced to Six Sigma, his natural gravitation was more towards Lean and the “people” side and skills associated with creating a problem-solving and leadership culture. We then talk about culture change; a topic which appears to be on many people's minds. But people rarely speak of what they would like to change from what, to what. They share the phrase “culture change” and just leave it hang there in the air like a cartoon bubble and leave it to others to figure out what was meant; a grand assumption on everyone's part. But Norbert does take the time to explain his ideas with respect to culture change; including the from what, to what. Fun fact; “Luxembourgish” is a language… About Norbert Majerus Norbert Majerus Norbert was born in Luxembourg and has a Master's Degree in chemistry from the University of Saarlandes, Saarbrucken Germany in 1978. After graduation and for the next almost 40 years, Norbert works for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, starting as a rubber chemist. Over the course of his career with Goodyear, he held several roles in the Goodyear Innovation Centers in Luxembourg and in Akron, Ohio and holds over 60 patents and trade secrets in the United States alone. The role he held the longest and for the final 15 years with the company was that of Lean Champion and is a Master Black Belt. Norbert has taught workshops and given keynotes at many conferences around the world. Since retiring from Goodyear in 2017, Norbert continues to share with others the wisdom he has gained through his consultancy, his speaking opportunities, and his writings, which include two books; “Lean-Driven Innovation” and “Winning Innovation”. It was a real pleasure to speak with Marty Strong. As you listen, you will understand why. He is charismatic in discussion as he shares some military training with you that can be applied to business. Don Witt of The Channel Daily News, a TR Publication, interviews Marty Strong who provides some insight into his newest book – Be Visionary – being released January 1st, 2023. Marty Strong During the interview, Marty discusses the three levels of management including Strategic, Operational, and Tactical level and how they provide for a solid leadership platform. They are all required and must be in play at the same time or your competitors will beat you. Leaders need to look at their history, current market, the economy, the evolving technology trends and more to assess how their company and product fit in today's market. Then they need to develop programs for all three levels of management about what needs to change to be successful in the future market. Be Visionary! Listen in to this constructive discussion. Because of the negativities that are happening in our society including bullying, raising a kid with confidence and self-esteem is very challenging, but it shouldn't be overlooked - it's where our kids start to explode their growth and development. So, how can we instill self-esteem and confidence in our kids? What is the difference between self-esteem and confidence? Raja Vaidya once suffered severe bullying because of his lifelong stutter. In this episode, he will dive into how Karate transformed himself from being bullied to someone who's helping thousands of people build self esteem and confidence for over 37 years as a 6th degree Master Black Belt. Raja will motivate us that any obstacle can be overcome with the right MIND-SHIFT“Confidence is what other people see about you. Self esteem is what you feel about yourself and what you believe about yourself. We need to have self-esteem and confidence match up together. And when they do, that's when you have a powerful person that can take advantage of their own talents and lead people.” - Raja Vaidya About the Guest:Coach Raja is a Triple threat - Science for the MIND, Karate for the Body, and Music for the Soul. Over the past 3 years he has provided free FB live coaching on Mindset and personal development and helped thousands. His past year the beta launch of “Mind-SHIFT Mastery” yielded a 100% success rate in guiding clients to face their fears. After 37 years of Tang Soo Do training he discovered a pattern in teaching white belts to achieve black belt and he parleys that into business, life, and relations. Now he is a Professional speaker who Keynoted TEDxJNJ, recently won the Toastmasters International Speech Competition (Area) twice, is in multiple Black Belt Hall of Fame, starred in the martial arts documentary movie "The Martialist", and soon to release his new book “UN-Box ME Today.” All of this despite a lifelong stutter which he saved for last to show you that any obstacle can be overcome with the right MIND-SHIFT.Learn more about Raja: www.VictoryMindsetAcademy.comConnect with Blissful Parenting:Free Workshop ► https://www.BlissfulParentingWorkshop.com Website ► http://www.TheBlissfulParent.com/ Blog ► http://www.TheBlissfulParent.com/blog Podcast ► http://www.TheBlissfulParent.com/podcast/ Contact ►http://www.BlissfulParenting.com/contact Follow Us On Social Media:Youtube ► https://www.youtube.com/theblissfulparent Facebook ► https://www.facebook.com/theblissfulparent Instagram ► https://www.instagram.com/theblissfulparent/ Twitter ►https://twitter.com/blissfulparent Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! What were the top takeaways from the interactive metric sessions led by Keith Dorricott at the recent 4th Annual WCTG/MCC Clinical Trial Risk and Performance Management Virtual Collaborative Summit? That's the key topic explored during Linda Sullivan's interview with Dorricott, a Master Black Belt and veteran CRO executive who serves as an expert MCC work group leader and contributor. Dorricott discusses outcomes from several Summit breakout group sessions, including, Selection, Implementation and Use of KPIs in a Sponsor-CRO Collaboration and Using Metrics to ID Issues and Drive Improvement Activities. One key takeaway from the Summit, according to Dorricott: the importance of industry alignment on key performance questions, which can then be followed by developing and using metrics to help answer those performance questions. If you don't have key performance questions, you don't have the “grounding” necessary to get to the relevant metrics, explains Dorricott. He also described the key learnings from the very popular workshop on using metrics to drive process improvement, which provided participants with a methodology for reviewing metric dashboards and the opportunity to apply their skills to analyze a real-life case study. For more information about how to select the right metrics for your program and use metrics to improve performance, check out MCC's website, https://metricschampion.org.

Video version https://vimeo.com/460252023 About the Podcast In this edition of “State of Readiness”, I invite Dr. Morphis Tsalikidis. Morphis is an experienced professional in the field of Operational Excellence who I have known for a great many years and with whom I have shared the stage at several conferences. Our conversation is on the impact of COVID on businesses and their operations. Even though we know we have not made it through to the other side of this event, and in fact we are still in the midst of it, we share our observations of what companies have done, what they are doing, and what they might still need to consider. We start off with a discussion on "disruptors"; specifically what are non-credible disruptors and what are credible disruptors. The difference between the two is that a credible disruptor has truly destructive powers and where true transformation will occur; necessity being the mother of invention. One of the most obvious results of the COVID transformation is how quickly businesses made the transition from working at an office to working at home; something which was anathema prior to COVID. But what was especially remarkable was that the business leaders with whom each of us have spoken almost universally share that their productivity and the productivity of their staff has actually increased markedly; although the activity on the production floor has not fared as well for a variety of reasons. Since we are both OpEx/CI professionals, we delve into into the role, organization, and delivery of OpEx/CI programs and the observations we have had with respect to their effectiveness during this transformative period. In this regard, the OpEx/CI programs have had mixed results and we do a deep dive in sharing our observations and opinions with regards to why. Give a listen... About Dr. Morphis Tsalikidis Dr. Morphis Tsalikidis has a passion is for helping organizations develop their in-house capabilities in Continuous Improvement tools, techniques and mindset. Morphis earned a PhD at Lancaster University studying the effects of Lean Six Sigma deployment on Organizational Learning and Knowledge Creation and his Masters in Management Science and Operational Research from the Warwick Business School at the University of Warwick. Morphis is an internationally experienced operational excellence and business transformation executive who has had experiences around the world. His areas of expertise involve Lean Six Sigma, change management and developing and deploying business models and his experience has been with manufacturing and insurance. Video version https://vimeo.com/452339095 About the podcast In this edition of “State of Readiness”, I welcome Manuel “Manny” Ugarte, Director and Strategic Accounts Manager of the United States Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC). The US Army’s CCDC mission is to provide the research, engineering, and analytical expertise to deliver capabilities that enable the Army to deter and, when necessary, decisively defeat any adversary now and in the future. And the CCDC’s vision is to be the scientific and technological foundation of the Army Modernization Enterprise through world-leading research, development, engineering and analysis. Manny and I start by talking about his current role at the CCDC and the confluence of research, data, data analytics, and converting that research and data into a basis for making decisions about the future operations and capabilities of the US Army. Of particular interest is that the nature of what the CCDC and he are doing goes contraire to a lot of his past experience and training. After all, research begets innovation, and innovation requires the ability to think and act outside the box – to question everything even down to the core of how the US Army operates. But the real great story is about Manny’s life journey; Manny was born in Puerto Rico, the son of Cuban exiles escaping from the Castro regime. After escaping Cuba, his father earned his BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Mayaquez afterwards “earning his salt” and providing for his family. From this experience his father instilled in Manny his life’s values and the notion of serving their adopted country as a way of giving back. There was no tradition of military service in the family (except for his great grandfather serving in the Spanish Navy way back when). After University, he found himself assigned in Panama. And this is where the story really gets interesting; it includes all the elements of a great story. There is a warehouse full of surplus vending machines and Manny decides to moonlight as an entrepreneur while serving as an officer in the Army (or is it the other way around?). There is his finding the love of his life (with whom he took forever to actually court) and who happens to be a lawyer who helps him with his business dealings (which is the excuse he found for keeping her close). And there is the vicious competition of the old ladies selling empanada’s and coke on the corner – culture kills strategy. This is a really great story. In a very real way, it is the story of America, the American Dream, and everything that is great, and can be great, about the American experience. Give a listen. I am sure you will find it as funny, enjoyable, and inspirational as I did. And I am certain you will end-up with a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Guest: Manuel "Manny" Ugarte Manuel "Manny" Ugarte Manuel “Manny” Ugarte is the Director & Strategic Accounts Manager to oversee the Science and Technology strategic planning, program, budget & execution of experimental and state-of-the-art capabilities of the US Army’s Combat Capabilities Development Command – the subordinate organization of the nascent Army’s Futures Command. His leadership and military experiences have focused on strategic planning, process improvement, operations, and complex problem solving. As an executive leader, he embraces operational excellence methods, directing high performance teams on problem-solving techniques informed by business intelligence. Manny has served the United States in its operations around the world as a US Army Officer and Executive for over 25 years. Throughout his career, Manny has held many positions, including stints as Director of Analytics at the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Chief Operating Officer at the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), and Senior Operations Research Analyst at the Army Futures Command. Robert Tripp got involved in Six Sigma early in its adoption within American businesses. Since then he has integrated the Lean philosophies and worked with organizations large and small on focused projects as well as company-wide deployments. In our conversation, he steps back to look at the value of improvement efforts as something people do rather than just what the organization does. Clearly, adopting an improvement methodology is meant to improve customer satisfaction, internal process quality and financial results. Training and high visibility projects are the starting point, not the end result. When middle managers and work groups want to apply the tools and the thought processes to their problem solving, process improvement becomes part of the culture in Robert’s experience. You'll hear about … • What does it mean for Six Sigma or Lean "deployments" to be successful (Hint – project ROI it is NOT it). • Key factors driving outcomes and measurements (Hint – these apply to the "Usual Fixes" as well). • Reasons the growth of lean and Six Sigma has slowed (and what changes are making it better). • How senior leaders can keep themselves from inadvertently getting in their best people's way. Listen now to these and more of Robert’s observations on how process improvement evolves within organizations.

ANDY CROWE ● BILL YATES ● NICK WALKER NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. We get together every two weeks to talk about what matters to you as a professional project manager, whether it's certification issues or creating and implementing successful projects. We draw on the expertise of experts in the field and share their challenges and successes. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and beside me are the two in-house experts who guide our discussion, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. And Andy, you know, folks go online, they look at your bio, and they see all these letters behind your name. And probably most of our listeners are familiar with most of those letters, those acronyms. But there's one, a Black Belt Six Sigma. Should I be dodging blows here? What is the Black Belt Six Sigma? ANDY CROWE: It's funny, Nick. It's a Six Sigma Black Belt. What it is, Six Sigma has different levels of credentialing. And there's Yellow Belt, Green Belt, Black Belt, Master Black Belt, and Master Black Belt Trainer. So I'm somewhere in the middle there in terms of that. What it is, it's funny, there's a lot of project management certifications out there. We've talked about the PMP before. We've talked about the PMI-ACP. We've probably touched on the Program Management Professional and Portfolio, the PgMP and the PfMP, and certainly the Certified Associate in Project Management, the CAPM. A lot of alphabet soup there. And it's really funny because, even when I go do project management conferences, and people introduce me as a Six Sigma Black Belt, a lot of people in the room don't know what that is. They think it's some martial art. It's not. It's related to quality. It's a quality certification. And it's really the topic of today's podcast is about Six Sigma, about Lean Six Sigma – which is something a little bit different – and how those work and how they can benefit. NICK WALKER: Is this a certification that's been around a long time? Or is this something that's fairly new? ANDY CROWE: It's been around a while. Now, what happened with that, when it first came out, there wasn't a lot of structure as to who owned the certification. It was one of those things that a lot of different organizations were able to give that. And then that's changed. We'll talk about that later in the podcast a little bit, about how that's evolved, who's vying for kind of control of that certification, what that looks like, as well. BILL YATES: There are a couple of key components here that I want Andy to explain to the audience, Nick, because if there's a Lean component, then there's a Six Sigma component. And I like where we're headed with some background here, where this thing, where this movement began because it is all related to quality. And so Andy, what about Lean? When did that really come into play? ANDY CROWE: Lean is an amazing philosophy by itself. So it's a series of practices. And what Lean is trying to do is get rid of waste. Now, this is useful in a bunch of organizations. But it's really, really useful in manufacturing projects. So if you have a project that has manufacturing, this is where it comes in. Lean really came into vogue at Toyota. And so it started after World War II. It really picked up steam in the ‘70s and ‘80s. And this is when Toyota started surpassing, and Honda and some of these organizations started really surpassing U.S. manufacturing. And I've lived through it. I watched it firsthand, that it absolutely did. You know, there were times when, if you got 80,000 miles out of some U.S. cars, that was good. And then, you know, some of the Toyotas were getting 200,000 miles. And it was just astonishing what they were able to do. Well, they got there through a number of things. Lean was part of it. So Lean really talks about – the acronym we use in Lean is TIMWOOD, T-I-M-W-O-O-D. And what it is,
