For 37 years, Eileen Fisher has faithfully followed a vision: to create simple, timeless clothes for women that make it easy to get dressed. Soft-spoken, polite, and a self-described introvert, the 70-year-old Fisher is the unlikely CEO of an approximately $500 million fashion company that bears her name. The operation is owned by 42 percent of its largely female staff, and is praised for its longtime environmentalism and progressive business model. Headquartered in Irvington, New York, the brand embodies Fisher’s view of what a contemporary clothing business should be, and acts as her way of giving back to the world.Though Fisher prioritized natural materials in her designs from the beginning, she didn’t fully understand how making clothes affects the planet until a 2012 trip to China, where she visited the company’s factories and saw the severity of the water crisis firsthand. Upon returning home, she created an internal “Sustainable Design Team,” composed of representatives from key departments, including supply-chain management and production, with the goal of minimizing their work’s environmental impact. Today, the brand uses organic cotton and linen almost exclusively, and between 2015 and 2018, it offset all of its carbon emissions when transporting garments between its factories and distribution center. Seventy-nine percent of its wool is responsibly sourced or recycled. The company’s initiative that buys and sells vintage Eileen Fisher pieces, called Renew, has collected more than a million and a half garments, and Waste No More, an in-house studio that uses a felting machine to transform leftover fabric into home decor, accessories, and art, nods toward Fisher’s goal of creating a circular production system. She’s constantly looking for ways to reduce the brand’s environmental footprint. “The whole industry has a very long way to go,” Fisher says of fashion’s contribution to global economic and climate crises. But solving the problem, she adds, is a “huge opportunity.” On this episode, Fisher describes her efforts to build a clothing business that serves women and the environment, talking with Andrew about collaboration as a preferred modus operandi, solving the fashion industry’s pollution problem, and the remarkable effects of staying true to one’s vision, and to oneself.

We had a really fun conversation and one thing that really stood out for me was their description of what it's really like to make clothing that's Fair Trade Certified, and how that gets complicated during a pandemic. But it turns out the requirements involved with running a Fair Trade business actually protected Mightly's factory workers during the Covid and at the same time helped them both stay in business. We also talk about the Gen X advantage when it comes to sheltering in place, what it's like working on a 100% female executive team, and—despite the pandemic—how crying at work happens less often for all of us these days. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started!    Mike: Hi Dr Cabral, I wanted to know what causes a crack tongue and how I could treat it naturally to remove the cracks from the tongue? Is it a lack of drinking water? Mike:Hi Dr Cabral, I wanted to know if I could use bone broth powder to seal up the leaky gut? I am allergic to glutamine. I get headaches, joint pain and accelerated heartbeat. Mackenzie: Any info on having high levels of arabinose? No other yeast showed high Tobias: Dear Dr. Cabral, My name is Tobias, I've been following your Instagram for a while now and continue to find it really inspiring!I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the relevance of toxins in conventional clothing as I am trying to figure this out for myself at the moment. On one hand you read about toxins, including the dye itself, remaining in the fabric even after many washes and tiny amounts being able to absorb through the skin or being inhaled as dust particles. On the other hand many people in the holistic health field appear to wear mostly non-organic brands.Assuming the items have been washed before first wear: Is the impact on the body so tiny as to be completely irrelevant even long term - meaning that when only considering personal health (environment etc. aside), it does not make any difference which clothes you wear?Including underwear & socks? What about the sometimes even visible rubbing off of denim dye even after washing? What about absorbing toxins from shoes when sweating?Your thoughts are much appreciated,Tobias Sarah: Hi Dr Cabral. This question is regarding postpartum depression. Neither me or my family has issues with this and this question is really out of curiosity. I have started reading Gabby Bernstein's books which are predominantly self-help books and am really enjoying them. After writing 7 self-help books, she opened about suffering severe postpartum depression and I really admire her courage to speak about it. It's crazy to me how someone so spiritually centered can go through something like that. After doing some research, it looks like a biochemical issue more than anything so I would love to know if you have ever come across that and what your views are. Is there usually any underlying root cause to this or does it really vary? Thank you so much! Rachelle: Hi, I have a friend who takes a goldenseal tincture from a local ginseng farm proactively to help boost her immune system. She swears it’s also helped her her menstural cycles. Can you discuss the benefits of goldenseal and tell more about it? Samantha: I have become a recent fan of your work, and love everything that I am learning! You are a wealth of knowledge. My question is: After the end of my day, my legs are swollen to where I can see a pretty big indention from my socks and pants, especially noticeable more toward the ankle. There are times in which my legs seem achy due to the swollenness, maybe. Do you have any recommendations for me? Thank you so much for your knowledge and I look forward to hearing from you. On this week's show, I have an excellent documentary recommendation; we discuss the TIME Magazine article about dietary fat (and point out the elephant in the room that they virtually ignore); we talk about Dr. Oz's appearance before Congress and their idea of creating a Master Brand List to help with weight loss; Michelle Obama says her Ivy League education did not prepare her to make food choices for her children, and I suggest why that is irrelevant; then, we discuss a new study about the benefits of a 72-hour fast; also, we cover a story about how exercise might improve the condition of our gut microbiomes. In the Moment of Paleo we discuss the Possible and the Impossible. And, After the Bell, we'll hear a presentation about why we should preserve the indigenous populations around the world. On today’s show, we tackle the big question about fat by taking a look at recent worldwide reporting and media coverage of dietary fat. First, Nick Offerman offers his prose on the beauty of bacon. Then, we bounce from The Dr. Oz show and CBS News in America to the BBC in the UK to ABC’s Catalyst in Australia — they’re all chiming in about fat. Sweden’s government is making some changes to their dietary recommendations. And, we’ll wrap up the show with 13 Nutritional Lies that have made people sick and overweight. After the Bell it’s Dr. Aseem Malhotra and Arthur Haines.
