"Can You Fly" Yes, Freedy Johnston did his California Thing and it was immortalized on his 1992 album Can You Fly. When you're an artist you can go one of two ways: east or west and he Kansas-born singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston went east, landing in New York after college. Firmly planted in the 212, Johnston worked odd jobs and wrote songs and after keeping at it, he signed with the fledgling indie label Bar/None and that kicked off a career that has yielded classic albums like This Perfect World, Never Home, Back On The Road To You and, of course Can You Fly, which, after almost 30 years is available again in a remastered on CD and clear vinyl pressing. More on that in a second. Johnston has worked with Butch Vig, Aimee Mann, T-Bone Burnett, The Embarrassment and John Dee Graham, he's played all over the world, been praised by everyone from Rolling Stone to The New York Times, had a hit song with "Bad Reputation," played Conan, SXSW and signed to a major label. It's a partial list, but you get the idea: Freedy Johnston has had quite a career. With a new album on the way, Johnston has never sounded better. And Can You Fly has never sounded better either; a storming set of jagged pop like Trying To Tell You I Don't Know and In The New Sunshine along with wistful ballads like Tearing Down This Place and We Will Shine, Can You Fly is a timeless classic that remains dynamic and vital. www.freedyjohnston.com (http://www.freedyjohnston.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast: Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) BLUESKY + IG: @emberspodcast

In this episode of Sync Music Matters, I sit down with Jenn Anderson-Miller, a leading voice at the intersection of music, technology, and rights, to explore how How AI Is Reshaping the Music Industry from how music is made to how creators are protected. About Jenn Miller - How AI Is Reshaping the Music Industry Jenn Miller is the CEO and Co-Founder of Audiosocket, a forward-thinking music tech company revolutionising how music is licensed and used in media. With over 15 years of experience helping shape the music licensing landscape, Jenn is also the host of the insightful new series, Equitable Solutions for Creators in an AI Era. Jenn has participated in the DOJ Copyright Roundtable Sessions and recently moderated a SXSW panel on the future of music rights management. She brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and real-world experience to the urgent conversation about How AI Is Reshaping the Music Industry. Traditional AI vs Generative AI: What's the Difference? We begin by unpacking the difference between traditional AI, which powers tools like recommendation engines and music data analytics, and generative AI, which can now create entirely new compositions, lyrics, and even synthetic vocals. What does this mean for artists, composers, and rights holders. Will AI Replace Human Composers? Can generative AI replace human composers? That's one of the key questions we explore. While AI is capable of generating music at scale, Jenn emphasises the emotion, humanity, and lived experience that only human creators bring - the very qualities that make music truly resonate. We also examine whether the rise of AI-generated content will push audiences to seek out more authentic, human connection through music and what that might mean for the future of music. Rights Management in the Age of AI A major focus of our conversation is the evolving world of music rights management. As AI tools become capable of generating content that mimics real artists or samples existing work, who owns the rights to AI-generated music? Jenn shares her expertise on the legal and ethical implications, the need for updated rights frameworks, and why protecting creators is more important than ever. Key Takeaways: AI will transform music workflows, but human creativity remains irreplaceable. Emotion and authenticity are the core of what makes music meaningful. The industry must modernize rights management systems to address AI's impact. Advocacy and equitable solutions for creators are key to shaping a fair future. I've followed the journey of this documentary with keen interest, having discussed the film at length in conversations with Kate, co-star Albert Mwangi, and now, bringing the conversation full circle, producer Bethany Bruce. In this deep conversation, Bethany talks about her journey into the arts, what her interest in producing has been, how her work with Staple Fiction is changing storytelling on Australian screens, and what it was like to work with Kate on this powerful documentary. If this is the first time you're hearing of Make it Look Real, then welcome. This is a documentary that lifts the veil on intimacy coordinators, following their journey in film from the initial phases to the day of the shoot. In between scenes of working through the intimacy coordinator process, the film explores how films like Last Tango in Paris could have benefited from having an intimacy coordinator on set. Additionally, while this film is about film and TV production, it does open up discussion for others about consent when it comes to personal relationships.Check out Make it Look Real on Netflix right now, and to find out more about Bethany's work, visit StapleFiction.com.au.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. Coming up on this episode of Flirtations, we're joined by Israa Nasir, a psychotherapist, speaker, mental health advocate, creator of the digital platform Well Guide, and author of the brilliant new book Toxic Productivity, here today to have a conversation with us about what it means to feel enough in a world that constantly tells us otherwise. Inside the episode, we're exploring how hustle culture and the need to always be doing something not only impacts our careers, but also how we love and date.  We'll talk about the sometimes invisible pressure to check every box and make things work, and we'll look at how comparison, perfectionism, and rushing intimacy can keep us stuck in dating loops that leave us anxious - and yet wanting more. Israa shares insights on how family and cultural expectations shape our relationships, and how we can honor our roots while still choosing ourselves.  We also get into vulnerability vs. oversharing, why external validation isn't the enemy, and how curiosity, not criticism, is the key to dating with more clarity and self-compassion. So if you've ever felt like dating was just another performance, like you're behind in this unspoken race to be partnered, or like your "enoughness" is waiting to be confirmed by someone else, this one is for you! Let's do the Flirties, and meet Israa! Don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review Flirtations on your favorite podcast platform, and share this episode to spread BFE - big flirt energy, all over the world! Enjoying the show and want to support my work? Buy the Flirt Coach a coffee! About our guest:  Israa Nasir is a psychotherapist, keynote speaker, and author of Toxic Productivity: Reclaim Your Time and Energy in a World That Always Demands More. She is the founder of @well.guide, a digital mental health platform with a community of over 350,000, where she shares evidence-based insights on emotional wellbeing, burnout, and the psychology of achievement in a culture that often demands constant output. Israa has been a featured speaker at global stages including SXSW, the Mental Health America National Conference, and the Asia Society, and has led workplace wellbeing initiatives at companies such as Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Bloomberg. She has also delivered talks and workshops at Yale University and other leading academic institutions. Her work has been featured in Time, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and Axios. About your host:  Benjamin is a flirt and dating coach sharing his love of flirting and BFE - big flirt energy - with the world! A lifelong introvert and socially anxious member of society, Benjamin now helps singles and daters alike flirt with more confidence, clarity, and fun! As the flirt is all about connection, Benjamin helps the flirt community (the Flirties!) date from a place that allows the value of connection in all forms - platonic, romantic, and with the self - to take center stage. Today, I am joined by old friend and fellow MassArt alum Ben Sisto to discuss his acclaimed documentary, Who Let The Dogs Out (2019), ahead of his upcoming screening with a Q&A at Alamo Drafthouse in Boston. We talk about SIM (Studio for Interrelated Media at MassArt), a surprise guest at Fort Thunder, Providence and delaying projects during the pandemic! Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Baha Men classic with Ben for a Q & A at the Alamo Drafthouse in the Seaport on Tuesday, July 22nd. Who Let the Dogs Out (Hodgee Films, 2019) Only Boston Screening! Tuesday July 22 Alamo Drafthouse Cinema 60 Seaport Blvd., Boston MA, 02210 In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Baha Men's global pop sensation, Who Let the Dogs Out, OPEN is presenting screenings of Who Let the Dogs Out, a documentary film following artist Ben Sisto from Seattle to the UK as he attempts to gently nudge-back against the concept of individual authorship in favor of a view that art is a collective process. Produced by Hodgee Films, Who Let the Dogs Out made its debut at SXSW (2019), was a hit at Hot Docs (Toronto), and was later adapted into an episode of the popular podcast 99% Invisible. In addition to the Boston screening, the film will play at the Providence Public Library alongside Sisto's collection of some 300 pieces of research materials and ephemera. The Boston screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Who Let the Dogs Out writer Ben Sisto and critic Oscar Goff of The Boston Hassle. Some kind words: "…niftily balances a tightrope equation of “how much is this a white paper and how much is this an entertaining movie,” — Observer You'll never hear that damn song the same way again, that's for certain." – POV Magazine It's all just very confusing." –A/V Club About Ben: Ben Sisto is an artist who lives in Providence, RI with his family, including a dog called Andie. He is the world's leading expert (unchallenged) on Who Let the Dogs Out. Back in the 2000s, Ben lived in Boston where he organized many concerts, parties, and flea markets at places like Mass Art, Great Scott, and The Milky Way. I Think This Is Great! with Clay N. Desirée's song really helps me remember how blessed I am, with my mess, my stress -- the way it all opens my heart, like a treasure chest. Great body percussion part for all you rhythm-hungry folk, plus oohs for the Supremes fans. I take some time picking it apart so you can find some of the intricacies...   Songwriter Info: As a recording artist, songwriter, producer, facilitator, and yoga teacher, Desirée is driven by a passion for collective liberation. She is a two time SXSW music video winner and was nominated for a Juno Award for best adult contemporary album of the year in 2022. She has had multiple viral moments on TikTok and Instagram with her most popular video being for her song I Am Blessed. With her powerful voice as her main instrument, Desirée often accompanies it with her baritone ukulele, body percussion and other musicians. She has a passion for harmonizing and singing with others. She blends folk, soul, pop, Americana, and old-time country influences into her creations, though she often labels her music as 'singer-songwriter' for simplicity.   Sharing Info: The song is free to share in oral tradition groups, but please contact Desirée for recording and/or performing permission. Kris is co-creator, writer and EP of “Making Plans For Nigel,” a comedy series in network development with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Mary Rohlich (“Atypical”). Lefcoe's half-hour comedy “Giving Up,” about a New York couple facing their own deadline to either ‘make it' or give up their dreams, won top prizes at Seriesfest and New York Television Festival, and just had a theatrical premiere at the Roxy Cinema in NYC. The series was executive produced by David Wain and developed with Imagine Television. In 2020, Kris made her network directing debut on the NBC comedy “Superstore.”

Pitch-black comedy “Public Domain,” Kris' audacious audience-award-winning feature debut about a surveillance-based game show, was hailed as "creepy-funny and well-acted" (Variety), and "an assured debut" (Austin Chronicle). The film premiered at SXSW and was installed at Art Basel Miami.
Lefcoe's stop motion short “Tiny Riot Project,” featuring a riot squad of corporate mascots in a violent face off with endearing anarchists, premiered at IFF Rotterdam, was installed at Galerie Tomas Schulte Berlin, Havana Biennale, and Art Basel Miami, then sold to the Sundance Channel. Her acclaimed Twilight Zone-esque short “Can I Get a Witness?” starring Scott Speedman, screened at TIFF, BFI and Anthology Film Archives.

She recently won Best Director at New York Cinefest, and Best Director and Best Comedy at Deluxe Film Festival in Rome, for the sex-robot comedy “Technical Support” starring Aparna Nancherla and Courtney Pauroso, which quickly racked up almost million views on YouTube.  As a musician, Kris performs haunting original songs at live venues around NYC on a vintage keyboard she found in the garbage. Her first solo album will be released in Fall 2025. The advance single “Booked A Room” came out in 2024 with a hallucinatory stop motion video directed by Kris that premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and just won Best Video and the Audience Award at San Luis Obispo Festival.  Kris is also a professor in the MFA Film and Television program at Stony Brook University, SUNY. In 2024 she created and launched the Post-MFA Pilot Incubator Lab to shepherd alumni into the industry. She lives with her husband and daughter in a long-forgotten borough called Manhattan." Do any of us really care about truth when it comes to politics? Should we? In a world of big lies, denialism, and conspiracy theories, democracies are experiencing two interlocked crises: a loss of confidence in democracy itself and the growing sense among many that politics is only about power—not truth. In his new book, Michael Patrick Lynch argues that truth not only can—but must—matter in politics. He shows why truth is an essential democratic value—a value we need to sustain our democratic way of life—and how it can be strengthened. Despite evidence that people are rarely motivated by truth when it comes to politics, Lynch argues that this isn't inevitable. Contrary to the belief of many, political beliefs can be true or false. But if democracy is to continue to be a space of reason and not just an arena of power, we must build a better infrastructure of knowledge, including stronger schools and media, and renew our commitment to science and history. Michael Patrick Lynch is Provost Professor of the Humanities and Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut. Lynch is the author or editor of ten books, including Know-it-All Society, The Internet of Us, Truth as One and Many, and the New York TimesSunday Book Review Editor's pick, True to Life. He has spoken at TED and SXSW. In 2019 he was awarded The George Orwell Award, which recognizes writers who have made outstanding contributions to the critical analysis of public discourse. His new book is On Truth in Politics: Why Democracy Demands It.
