Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the dance which, from when it reached Britain in the early nineteenth century, revolutionised the relationship between music, literature and people here for the next hundred years. While it may seem formal now, it was the informality and daring that drove its popularity, with couples holding each other as they spun round a room to new lighter music popularised by Johann Strauss, father and son, such as The Blue Danube. Soon the Waltz expanded the creative world in poetry, ballet, novellas and music, from the Ballets Russes of Diaghilev to Moon River and Are You Lonesome Tonight. A popular outdoor brand somehow thought it was a good idea to set off an elaborate, polluting firework display and we are not impressed. We learn why doofuses are strapping iPads to tortoise backs. Sarah explains what "distance self-talk" is and why it can be helpful or hurtful depending on how you use it. We talk about a "very haunted" hotel that has very strict rules about pranks, and since Susie hates pranks, she's on board. We debate the "correct" way to cut food and we learn why Susie is stressed about doing it wrong. Susie explains her rubric for what makes a one-hit-wonder, and hear why a lot of people are very sensitive when they learn an artist they happen to like only had one hit (we're looking at you Oasis fans). Plus, there's a college football program that is known for taking ridiculous player photos, and their new coach put a stop to it. Susie and Sarah disagree about whether the coach did the right thing...Brain Candy Podcast Presents: Susie & Sarah's SpOoOoOoOoktacular Spectacle, October 30, Oriental Theater, Denver, Colorado: Get your tickets! When Peter van Agtmael went to Iraq in 2006 to embed with the U.S. military, he was 24 years old and confident that his pictures could help end an unjust war. Two decades later, after documenting combat deaths overseas and then turning his camera lens on America, he's learned the limits of what photography can do. In this episode, Peter talks about the emotional toll of bearing witness to violence, the fraught ethics of choosing a subject, and how he ended up in a legal battle with Ye over an image. Peter's book is called “Look at the U.S.A.: A Diary of War and Home,“ and he has a show at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design until January 25th. You can see his 2015 KKK wedding photo here. Dr. Lyons reveals how drama addiction isn't just obvious chaos—it's overscheduling, inability to tolerate stillness, and sabotaging intimacy when vulnerability feels threatening. He explains the biology: drama provides energy, numbs pain, and creates sensation that makes us feel alive. Listener questions address a 21-year-old spiraling after her boyfriend called an actress sexy, and a 30-year-old wanting kinkier sex but getting triggered. Dr. Lyons and Dr. Emily emphasize distinguishing sensation-seeking from authentic connection, coming back to the body when triggered, and recognizing how childhood patterns shape adult sexuality and relationships. I've never dated anyone. Never been on a dating site. My experiences in the early stages of romance and relationships have always been intense, wild and unmistakable. I've seen something reposted a few times lately, an idea that people seem to be in awe of, that's been the story of my life: “What's crazy is that real lovers don't even do talking stages. All it takes is one good date and suddenly y'all are together every day after that.” Yeah. This is how it's always been for me. I EXPECT big love, big feeling, a whole-hearted, whole-vagina, whole-soul response to someone. Nothing less. Why would I waste my time on anything BUT that? In this episode of More Than Roommates, Derek, Gabrielle, and Scott have a candid, biblical conversation about the “sexless marriage”—why it happens, how pornography, busyness, medical issues, and poor communication play a role, and what couples can do to rebuild connection. They offer practical steps so you can move from roommates back to one-flesh intimacy. Questions to Discuss: 1. In our season right now, does sex feel more like a thermometer (just reporting our temperature) or a thermostat (able to change it)? Why?2. When was the last time we each felt truly pursued and enjoyed by the other? What specific actions helped?3. What would make it safer for us to share desires, preferences, and fears about sex?4. How can we renew the covenant this week in a way that is tender, unhurried, and mutually honoring? What happens when people decide to share their sexual fantasies? How does it usually go? In today's show, we're going to explore how many people have ever shared their fantasies with a partner before, the five most common reasons that people decide to open up about them, as well as how partners usually react to fantasy disclosure. I am joined by Matthew Kimberley, a lecturer in Psychology at Birmingham City University. He researches sexual fantasies and also leads the Gender, Sexuality and Intimate Relationships Research Lab. Some of the specific topics we explore include: Is it common for people to share their fantasies with their partners? What is the most common reason for sharing a sexual fantasy? Why do some people choose to keep their fantasies secret? Do partners typically respond positively or negatively when fantasies are shared? When is sharing your fantasies a good idea? You can check out the Gender, Sexuality and Intimate Relationships Research Lab’s website to learn more about Matthew’s work. Got a sex question? The Pleasure Zone with Milica Jelenic - Diamond Host What are the little things we do—often without realizing—that can completely ruin intimacy in our relationships? From skipping foreplay to bringing stress into the bedroom, there are certain habits that slowly ruin intimacy instead of building deeper connection and pleasure. Even with the best intentions, behaviors like faking orgasms, avoiding honest conversations, or focusing only on performance can ultimately ruin intimacy and leave both partners feeling disconnected. In this episode of The Pleasure Zone, Milica Jelenic explores the 10 Sexual Don'ts That Ruin Intimacy—the subtle and not-so-subtle mistakes that can derail desire and passion. You'll discover why presence is more erotic than performance, how foreplay and afterplay are just as important as “the main event,” and why consent and communication are non-negotiable if you want thriving intimacy. We'll also dive into how stress and cortisol sabotage your erotic energy, why comparing your sex life to porn or past partners is a connection killer, and the surprising ways ignoring your own body can distance you from both pleasure and your partner. Each “don't” is paired with an invitation to shift into greater awareness, playfulness, and embodied pleasure. If you've ever wondered why intimacy fades, what drains erotic energy, or how to rekindle passion in your relationship, this conversation offers both gentle truths and practical tools you can use right away. Sarah went gay line-dancing, which is like regular line-dancing, but awesome! And now she's hooked. We discuss the Lilith Fair documentary, how the festival compares to Woodstock 99, why women should run more stuff, and why we have a lot of concerts to go to now. We learn about three nuns who broke out of their retirement home and returned to their convent, and the Vatican is not pleased. Hear why Ed McMahon's Publisher's Clearinghouse winners are getting screwed, and now they're going broke despite being lottery winners. You can check it out and join the program HERE “Why does lust fade in long-term relationships?” “How do happy couples keep their sex life alive after years together?” “Is it normal to lose desire for my partner over time?” “What's the best way to bring back passion after kids or menopause?” Turns out bunny-rabbit lust has an expiration date—but on Sex, Love and Elephants, Dr. Cheryl makes it clear your sex life doesn't have to expire with it. From menopause to scheduled sex, from the biology of lust to the reality of long-term love, this conversation is both raw and reassuring. Cheryl and her husband share their own story, including struggles, dry spells, and what it really takes to keep desire alive. Spoiler: no couple is “broken” just because spontaneous lust fades. What kind of partner do you want to be someday? Do you think privacy is important in a relationship? What do you think pornography leaves out about real relationships? These are just a few of the unusual yet important questions boys are rarely asked. In this episode, Dr. Delaney Ruston continues her conversation with educator Christopher Pepper and journalist Joanna Schroeder, co-authors of the new book Talk To Your Boys. Together, they discuss how to help boys navigate gaming, romantic relationships, and pornography. They explore online sports betting (“the house always wins”), share ways to bring up sensitive topics like pornography, and highlight the particular role dads can play in guiding these conversations. In this candid conversation, couples and sex therapist Dr. Nicole Van Ness, LMFT joins Dr. Marianne to explore how developmental trauma shapes attachment styles, body image, sexual desire, and day-to-day intimacy. Nicole explains what developmental trauma is, how it differs from or overlaps with complex PTSD, and why chronic misattunement in childhood can echo through adult relationships, stress responses, and self-regulation. You will hear practical, compassionate strategies to rebuild safety, agency, and connection in your body and with your partner. What You'll Learn Developmental trauma 101: How repeated misattunement and lack of repair in childhood influence trust, safety, and the nervous system in adulthood. Attachment and sex: How anxious and avoidant patterns can create desire pursuer–withdrawer cycles, sensitivity to rejection, and misaligned invitations for sex. Body image and pleasure: Why self-loathing, dissociation, and low interoceptive awareness can shift sex from pleasure to performance and how to return to embodied enjoyment. Masturbation as self-care: Ways self-pleasure can restore agency, support trauma recovery, and improve partnered intimacy through curiosity, consent, and pacing. Desire discrepancy: How to reframe a declined invitation as information rather than personal rejection and how to stay connected when desire levels differ. Pelvic and sexual pain: How chronic stress and hypervigilance can contribute to issues like vaginismus and pelvic floor tension and why relaxation and safety matter. Neurodivergence and RSD: Tools for identifying rejection sensitive dysphoria in the moment and naming it with your partner to reduce spirals and repair faster. Eroticism and aliveness: Gentle, stepwise practices that rebuild embodiment and pleasure, from sensing music and movement to sharing desire with a partner. Key Takeaways Trauma adaptations are creative survival strategies. They deserve respect while you learn new options that fit your current life. Pleasure requires enough safety, agency, and self-worth to receive and enjoy it. These ingredients can be rebuilt. Honest conversations about boundaries, pacing, and permission support intimacy more than duty or performance. Small, consistent body-based practices help restore interoception, reduce hypervigilance, and widen your window of tolerance during sex and affection. Gentle Practices to Try Name your nervous system state: Am I keyed up, shut down, or settled. Choose regulation first. Solo exploration with care: Treat self-pleasure like self-nurture. Slow it down. Focus on sensation, comfort, and curiosity. Low-stakes embodiment: Sway to a favorite song, notice breath, enjoy soft fabrics, or feel grass under your feet. Build from neutral to pleasant sensations. Clear invitations and exits: Ask for what you want. Offer options. Affirm that no is welcome. Agree on easy ways to pause or change course. Rejection reframe: A no is information about timing or capacity, not your worth. Validate disappointment and stay connected. Send us a textINTRODUCTION:In this episode of the 'Sex, Drugs, and Jesus' podcast, host De'Vannon Seráphino continues the discussion on celibacy from the previous episode. Emphasizing celibacy as a necessary practice in the end times, the episode critiques the use of condoms as deceitful and anti-Christ. It discusses voluntary celibacy highlighted by statistics from the Kinsey Institute and VeryWellMind, outlining reasons such as emotional burnout and self-improvement. The host underscores the spiritual and energetic consequences of sexual actions, arguing that all sexual behaviors, including kissing and masturbation, create significant energetic ties. The narrative weaves in biblical references, situating celibacy as a spiritual purification process for a devoted, loving relationship under God's guidance. The episode concludes by rejecting the concept of condoms and promoting unprotected sex within committed, trustful relationships while warning against promiscuity and its spiritual repercussions.Playlists: https://music.apple.com/profile/DeVannonSeraphinoWebsite: https://www.SexDrugsAndJesus.comINCLUDED IN THIS EPISODE (But not limited to):· Celibacy Is Not A Trend.· Sex Negative and Sex Positive.· Lower Your %.CONNECT WITH DE'VANNON SERÁPHINO:TikTok: https://shorturl.at/nqyJ4YouTube: https://bit.ly/3daTqCMLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/devannonEmail: SDJPodcastNewYork@Gmail.com REFERENCES:PsychologyToday: https://tinyurl.com/mryccaf5 VeryWellMind : https://tinyurl.com/4bpkr7mu Thanks for listening!!! From her years as a labor and delivery nurse, she explains what actually happens in the hospital during childbirth and what most people never hear about until they're living it. She talks about Muslim dating, from family expectations to apps like Minder and her experience using an online matchmaker. Pressure pushed her to marry the wrong man, and she ended up going no-contact with her parents. After cutting ties, pole dancing became her outlet, and a video of her performing in a hijab went viral - sparking both backlash and an outpouring of support from women who she inspired. Long-term partners often find themselves having the same fight over and over again. This repetitive, unproductive conflict is known as a negative cycle–and it can ultimately be very damaging to the relationship. So in today’s show, we’re going to discuss how to identify negative cycles in your own relationship, and how to break the pattern. My guest is Julie Menanno, a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. She also provides insight and advice for couples at @TheSecureRelationship on Instagram, with over one million followers. Julie's latest book is titled Secure Love: Create a Relationship that Lasts a Lifetime. Some of the specific topics we explore include: How do you know when an argument you’re having with a partner is reflective of a larger negative cycle? What are some ways to use vulnerability to break out of a negative cycle? What does co-regulation look like for couples trying to resolve an argument? What are the most common traps that lead to negative cycles in the first place? How can couples repair their relationship if a negative cycle sneaks in? You can visit Julie’s website to learn more about her work. Got a sex question? Does more sex make you “wider”? Is it bad to swallow sperm? How do you clean a sex toy? In the pilot episode of our spinoff show, YOU KNOW WHAT, college students answer anonymous questions from teens and young adults — with help from sex educator Shafia Zaloom. This episode is a pilot for a concept we very much want to keep making. As you can imagine, it's not easy to get funding for a sex ed show for young adults, but we know it would be very popular! If you work for an org that might be interested in partnering, or you have the means to help out, email hello@longestshortesttime.com. You can hear more episodes with the fabulous Zaraia, Niko, and Ollie when you join our special club, LST+
