The Angry Therapist Podcast: Ten Minutes of Self-Help, Therapy in a Shotglass for fans of Joe Rogan Experience

In this episode, John Kim shares a simple moment from the ocean that became a powerful lesson about relationships and emotional repair. While learning to surf in Costa Rica, two very different encounters in the water reveal why ruptures are unavoidable—but repair is everything. One moment of anger leads to disconnection. One moment of acknowledgment leads to instant safety and ease. John also shares details about his upcoming surf retreat in Costa Rica—a space to slow down, regulate the nervous system, build real connection, and experience the healing power of the ocean together. A reminder that the strength of any relationship isn't measured by how little we rupture—but by how willing we are to repair.

If you've ever wondered how some people build businesses that last—this episode is your blueprint. Nicole sits down with Neri Karra-Silliman (author, advisor, entrepreneur, and Oxford entrepreneurship expert) to unpack what immigrant entrepreneurs can teach all of us about confidence, courage, resilience, and creating businesses that thrive for generations—even when you're not starting with privilege, connections, or a trust fund. In this episode, we get into: Why immigrant-founded businesses often endure longer—and why nobody's been asking the right questions The difference between an entrepreneur and a pioneer (hint: pioneers build what didn't exist before) How companies like WhatsApp and Duolingo started with impact-first problems  The 8 principles of business longevity inspired by immigrant entrepreneurs, including: Cross-cultural bridging (innovation happens when you live in more than one world) Community as currency (relationships are the wealth) “Frying in your own oil” (aka self-sufficiency before outside money makes you lazy) Shared values over growth-at-all-costsRejection as fuel (“no” is the beginning of negotiation) Luck as a skill (recognizing moments and playing your hand) Faith as the foundation for risk, reinvention, and resilience And the most overlooked glue of all: kindness Immigrants aren't the problem—they're the blueprint. This conversation will change how you think about risk, reinvention, and what it really takes to build something that lasts (with profit and purpose). Thank you to our sponsors! Sex is a skill. Dating and relationships have never been simple — but in today's world of apps, algorithms, and endless options, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Justin Garcia, Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute, evolutionary biologist, sex researcher, and author of the upcoming book The Intimate Animal. We talk about what our biology can (and can't) tell us about love and desire, how technology is reshaping intimacy, and why breakups can hit so hard. We also get personal — sharing stories about grief, recovery, non-monogamy, and navigating love in the real world. Dr. Garcia brings a refreshingly nuanced perspective, blending science, lived experience, and a deep respect for the complexities of modern relationships. Topics Covered The biological basis of pair bonding and why love is a survival strategy How dating apps are changing the way we connect — and the pitfalls of infinite choice Non-monogamy, open relationships, and what science really says about them Breakups, heartbreak, and why they feel like addiction withdrawal Infidelity: what motivates it, and why it's often about secrecy more than sex Practical dating advice backed by years of research The neuroscience of attraction, and how foreplay, communication, and intention keep passion alive How personal experience shaped Dr. Garcia's latest work — including his own recent marriage and fatherhood Guest Bio Dr. Justin Garcia is an evolutionary biologist, sex researcher, and Executive Director of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. He's also the Chief Scientific Advisor for Match Group, guiding large-scale studies on modern relationships like the annual Singles in America survey. His research has been featured in outlets like The New York Times, TIME, and CNN, and his new book The Intimate Animal: The Science of Sex, Fidelity, and Why We Live and Die for Love will be released on January 27, 2026. We're wired for long-term bonding, but novelty and desire often create tension within those bonds. Breakups are more than emotional — they're neurochemical. Love activates the brain's reward systems, and heartbreak can mimic drug withdrawal. Modern dating can feel overwhelming because our brains haven't evolved to handle endless digital choice. Intention and curiosity matter more than perfection. Non-monogamous relationships aren't inherently less loving or stable. They often demand high levels of communication and negotiation. Infidelity is less about desire and more about secrecy. Even in non-monogamous relationships, broken trust hurts. There's no perfect formula for love. Each connection is unique, and understanding yourself can help you show up better in relationships. Connect with Me Have a question, topic suggestion, or want to be a guest? The world is getting weirder every day… We need weirdness specialists. Maybe the best guy for the job is my friend, the brilliant “metashaman” (and possible octopus) Layman Pascal. In his own words, Layman “used to be a Canadian meditation teacher, yoga instructor & philosopher of Integral Metatheory but he's feeling much better now.” He leads the Metamodern Spirituality Labs, hosts The Integral Stage, Soulmakers+, and (forthcoming) Untegral Stage podcasts, and provides unique online courses. He is also a founding member of several think tanks in the developmental psychology and spirituality space, senior editor of Emerge online & is allied to numerous institutes across the field. In addition to many journal and anthology articles, he is the author of Gurdjieff for a Time Between Worlds, Sex, Death & the Occult, as well as an upcoming book about Nietzsche. Layman is known for his philosophical work on the metaphysics of adjacency, complex nonduality, coaxial developmental stage theories, sacred naturalism, archaic futurism, embodied spirituality & the “integration-surplus model of religion and spirituality” for a post-postmodern civilization facing numerous accelerating and converging crises. In this conversation we cover a lot of ground in a very short time, including: the nature of futurity and how humankind's relationship to the future is changing; how to surf intense peculiarity'; the abiding sociocultural role of “shamanoid” personalities and other useful weirdos; “wartime” mobilization for The Big Us; and other deep and delightful subjects. Have you ever been unable to stop thinking about someone? They're the first thing on your mind when you wake up and the last before you fall asleep. When they text, you're ecstatic. When they don't, you feel deflated. That experience has a name: limerence. In this episode, we unpack what it is, where it comes from, and why the brain can become so powerfully attached to another person. My guest is Dr. Tom Bellamy, a neuroscientist and honorary Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham. He has published over forty scientific works on neurophysiology. He runs the popular blog Living with Limerence and is author of the new book Smitten: Romantic Obsession, the Neuroscience of Limerence, and How to Make Love Last. Some of the specific topics we explore include: How is limerence different from lust and love? What happens in the brain during limerence? Why does uncertainty fuel romantic obsession? Is modern dating making limerence more common? What emotional needs or life circumstances make someone more vulnerable to limerence? You can check out Tom’s website to learn more about his work. Sarah claims there are five "approved" lesbian haircuts and we learn what they are. Fun and work in the same sentence? For most of us, that's a “does not compute” moment… and that's exactly why this conversation matters. Workplace culture expert Bree Groff (author of Today Was Fun: A Book About Work. Seriously.) breaks down why we've been trained to treat joy like it's “unprofessional,” why busyness is murdering brilliance, and how to start building workplaces (and workdays) that are actually fit for human life. In this episode, we get into: Why “hard” doesn't automatically mean “valuable” (and why we need to stop romanticizing suffering) The two toxic extremes: “Work is called work for a reason” (aka: misery cosplay) “Do what you love and you'll never work a day” (aka: burnout bait) Bree's “third way”: work can be a nice way to spend our time on the planet—not a daily punishment Why people don't buy your work because you suffered—they buy it because it creates value (pain is optional) The “infinite workday” problem: nonstop meetings, constant interruptions, and zero space to think Why brilliance requires spaciousness: “do nothing” time, thinking time, walking time, shower-epiphany time How conformity kills creativity (and why “professionalism” can be a creativity straightjacket) The case against delayed gratification when it turns into: “I'll live later” (spoiler: later is not guaranteed) Wrap-up: Work doesn't have to be miserable to be meaningful—and if your job demands your whole life in exchange for a paycheck, that's not ambition… that's a bad deal wearing a blazer. Really Famous with Kara Mayer Robinson

This is a big, huge, revealing talk with Chris Noth. Chris is an actor. He played Detective Mike Logan on Law & Order and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Peter Florrick on The Good Wife, and William Bishop on The Equalizer. He was nominated for Golden Globe awards for Sex and the City and for The Good Wife. He's best known as Mr. Big in the HBO series Sex and the City, the Sex and the City movies that came later, and (spoiler alert) one episode of the follow-up series And Just Like That. Mr. Big, of course, was the, well, let's just call him the somewhat unattainable love interest of the main character, Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. In case you're not aware, there's been a lot of, I guess we can call it, drama, surrounding Sex & the City. There have been rumors of tension between SJP and Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha, and there's been a bunch of criticism surrounding some of the characters and plotlines in the original series and the reboot, And Just Like That. But the biggest drama is surrounding Chris Noth. In 2021, there were several sexual assault allegations against Chris published in THR and The Daily Beast. He was never criminally charged and said at the time that it wasn't true, but there was an immediate impact. He was written off The Equalizer, for starters. Soon after, Sarah Jessica Parker and her SATC castmates, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, put out a public statement about the situation. I read it to you so you know exactly what we're talking about when Chris and I get into this. OK, so. After that, his lawyers told him to not say anything. So he stopped talking publicly. Behind the scenes, a lot more was going on. And you're about to hear about all of it. The journalist, novelist and cultural critic Chuck Klosterman is best known for writing about rock music and pop culture in astute essay collections like “The Nineties,” “X” and “Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs.” But Klosterman got his start in college as a sports journalist, and with his new book, “Football,” he has finally devoted an entire collection to the sport that has fundamentally shaped him alongside American society at large.“I've unconsciously been thinking about football for most of my life,” Klosterman tells host Gilbert Cruz on this week's episode. “I decided at some point, I do want to write a book about sports. You know, I'd always mentioned sports here and there in the culture writing I had done, or the kind of conventional pop culture writing I'd done, but I wanted to do a real sports book. And initially my idea was it would be about basketball — but over time it became very clear to me it had to be about football, for a variety of reasons. … It seemed as though if you're going to do a sports book, particularly as it relates to society, there is only one choice in the United States.” Subscribe today at nytimes.com/podcasts or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. We often think good sex mostly comes down to physical technique. But many people feel disconnected from their bodies, stuck in their heads, or unable to access desire and pleasure. And that's something technique alone can't fix. Today, we'll explore how attending to unconscious factors like shame, anxiety, and trauma can open the door to deeper pleasure. I am joined once again by Juliane Maxwald, a licensed psychoanalyst, couples therapist, and AASECT-certified sex therapist based in New York City. She has over fifteen years of experience working with individuals and couples. She is the author of the new book Psychoanalytic Sex Therapy: Exploring the Unconscious Life of Sexuality. Some of the specific topics we explore in this episode include: Why orgasm is more than a physical response How shame and trauma quietly shape your sex life Why “spectatoring” kills pleasure When trying to fix your partner backfires How to reconnect with your body during sex To learn more about Juliane’s work, visit her website and find her on Instagram @julianemaxwald. Sarah's outdoor adventures never stop, and this time she ended up in a ski parade! While Susie has resorted to wearing heated apparel inside. Susie shares the story of Andrea Yates, the woman who killed her five children, and the religious beliefs that made her think she should. Susie is worked up about how grandparents now insist on being called all kinds of weird names and Sarah's got a theory about why they don't want to be called "grandma." We discuss the abundance of "service" dogs on planes and the reasons people bend the rules to get their dog on board, and why it's the airlines's fault. And we hear about two babies who were switched at birth and it wasn't discovered until they were two years old, and the moms had to decide whether to switch them back or not!
