EPISODE 484 - Zeeva Bukai - The Anatomy of Exile, A modern-day Romeo and Juliet story between a Palestinian and a JewZeeva Bukai is a fiction writer, born in Israel and raised in New York City. Her stories have appeared in OfTheBook Press, Carve Magazine, Pithead Chapel, The Master's Review, jewishfiction.net, Mcsweeney's Quarterly Concern, Image Journal, December Magazine, The Jewish Quarterly and elsewhere. Her honors include a fellowship at the New York Center for Fiction, residencies at Hedgebrook Writer's Colony, and Byrdcliff AIR program in Woodstock NY. Her work has been anthologized in Frankly Feminist: Short Stories by Jewish Women from Lilith Magazine, and Out of Many: Multiplicity and Divisions in America Today. She holds an MFA from Brooklyn College and is the Assistant Director of Academic Support at SUNY Empire State University. Her debut novel, The Anatomy of Exile, will be published by Delphinium Books in January 2025. She lives in Brooklyn with her family. The Abadi Family saga begins when a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story between a Palestinian and a Jew ends in predictable tragedy. The family flees to America to mend, but encounters only more turmoil that threatens to tear the family apart. In the wake of the 1967 Six Day War, Tamar Abadi's world collapses when her sister-in-law is killed in what appears to be a terror attack but what is really the result of a secret relationship with a Palestinian poet. Tamar's husband, Salim, is an Arab and a Jew. Torn between the two identities, and mourning his sister's death, he uproots the family and moves them to the US. As Tamar struggles to maintain the integrity of the family's Jewish Israeli identity against the backdrop of the American “melting pot” culture, a Palestinian family moves into the apartment upstairs and she is forced to reckon with her narrow thinking as her daughter falls in love with the Palestinian son. Fearing history will repeat itself, Tamar's determination to separate the two sets into motion a series of events that have the power to destroy her relationship with her daughter, her marriage, and the family she has worked so hard to protect. This powerful debut novel explores Tamar's struggle to keep her family intact, to accept love that is taboo, and grapples with how exile forces us to reshape our identity in ways we could not imagine.https://www.zeevabukai.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

I'm back this week with this penultimate installment of in-person interviews from the couch at Lollapalooza where I spoke to four amazing bands and artists for this episode! First up is the amazing East Bay crew, Destroy Boys, who are now two-time Roadcase guests! Vi and Alexia first formed the band at the ripe old age of 15, and haven't looked back. Their latest album entitled Funeral Soundtrack #4, just came out August 9, and I'm happy to report that his hardworking band just keeps getting better! We tackle all the things that drive the Destroy Boys ethos and it's a great conversation.Quarters of Change from NYC, met in high school, and have a super fun and familial vibe. Having grown up together and being close friends is all part of their unique story of playing clubs as teenagers in the Big Apple. Their new album, Portraits, is out now!Tanner Usrey is a southern rocker with a heart of gold and a down-home, hard working ethos. Tanner is an absolute Road Dog, and once he quit his day job in late 2019, only Covid could stop him, albeit temporarily. Tanner likes to keep as real as his country roots and has a great story to tell.Closing this episode is the one and only Godly the Ruler, a Chicago native, who is part performance artist, part chameleon, and part hip-hop EDM rocker while on stage. Their tale is one of finding the lane and then crossing all the lines while still staying true to oneself.Tune in now to listen to these amazing conversations live from the couch at Lollapalooza!! In this Awake in the World podcast episode, Michael shares a story of never disparaging Buddha and Mark Ragosian who lived in Woodstock New York. There is nowhere you can stand that is not a place the Buddha hasn't practiced. The Buddha was enlightened right where you are standing. If you can see others as a Buddha you are a Buddha—even animals and trees. Recorded June 28, 2011. We did a number of sing - alongs and there were lots of moments when the crowd joined us on beautiful choruses. A great time! On TOKYOATOTO“Sam Truitt has added a wonderful new innovative example of one of my favoirte genres – travel poetry. By way of two ‘T squares' (Times and Tiananmen) on the way to Japan, he generously expands the notational into double accordion-fold expanses; one typed and sculptural, one handwritten, drawn notation condensing sound, thought, perception and time. The reader is invited into the poet's process alternating between quicksilver caught thought to poems lifted to the next level of line-break shape and form…”---- Lee Ann Brown, author of Philtre: Writing in the Dark 1989-2020 “…the intimacy of writing as note-taking feels palpably present. We intrude on those personal pages, even in facsimile. By contrast, the public-facing presentation of the typeset texts feels bold, exposed, declaratively blunt in its directness..”----Joanne Drucker, author of Diagrammatic Writing

John Hall is a founding member of the band Orleans and one of the main instigators of the No Nukes and MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) movements. He's been intimately involved in promoting social change and environmental advocacy, both as a private citizen and as an elected representative in Congress. John was studying piano at 5, playing French horn, guitar bass and drums by 12. He started playing in the clubs of Greenwich Village by 18 and at 21 wrote and directed music for a Broadway and Off-Broadway play. He then worked on numerous projects including Seals and Crofts' album Down Home. He toured with Taj Mahal and when he came home, started the band that would become Orleans in 1972. Moving to Woodstock NY with his wife Johanna, the pair began writing together. They had major hits ‘Dance With Me' and ‘Still The One', songs that have garnered 9 million terrestrial airplays and hundreds of millions of streams. John has also co-written songs for Janis Joplin, Millie Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, The Tymes, Chaka Khan and Chet Atkins among others. He co-founded the group Musicians United for Safe Energy and helped organise the 1979 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden. His song 'Power' was its anthem, performed and recorded there by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Carly Simon, Nicolette Larson, Phoebe Snow, and many more. That song was also sung by Peter Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger and others. John's guitar playing was featured on albums by Browne, Raitt, Carly Simon, Little Feat and more. In the 90s the John Hall Band recorded two LPs: Search Party and All Of The Above, which contained the AOR and MTV staple Crazy (Keep On Fallin'). Environmental activism led John to serve on several boards. In 2006 he was elected to the US House of Representatives and also served on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. Returning to private life in 2011, John continued to perform and record with Orleans and as a solo artist. During the pandemic, he wrote and recorded songs for his latest CD “Reclaiming My Time.” John Hall joins us this week as special guest to share the stories (and the music) from his life. I hope you'll join us. AC Newman returns to The Stew with the 7th New Pornographers studio album Continue as a Guest. The New P's have been acclaimed since forming in Vancouver 1997. They were dubbed a Super Group. They weren't so much super as stellar. A great blend of melodies, hooks, word puzzles and fine harmonies. Pitchfork has described the band's sound as "peppy, gleeful, headstrong guitar pop",[3] while Stereogum called the band's debut album Mass Romantic as "one of the greatest and most immediate power pop albums ever rendered” I found Carl at home in Woodstock NY. Having followed the band's early years in Vancouver, we had lots to talk about.
For the past several decades, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams -- both together and separately -- have lived a life on the road performing music across the country and around the world. Now over the past several years, this lovely couple has been playing music and traveling together, touring behind their new album, Live at Levon's!, representing the special time they have spent over the years at the iconic Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. Larry is a gifted in-demand sideman originally from New York City, while Teresa is an extraordinary vocalist who came to NYC as an actor and singer, and eventually toured as a backing vocalist with legendary acts such as Mavis Staples, Emilou Harris, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir. Larry is a noted record producer, toured as a guitarist in Bob Dylan's band for many years and was the Musical Director of Levon's Midnight Ramble Band for over a decade. Their musical lives are a tale of time spent on the road -- and now their paths have converged allowing them to create music and tour together. Their combined knowledge of road life and shared love of live performing serves as the constant impetus in their lives and they are here to share their wisdom about life, love and what is all means to them both individually and as a couple. Laurie Towers is a bassist within New York City's “downtown” scene of free improv, new music and punk-laden experimentalism. Over the past twenty-five years she's brought her R&B-driven counterpoint and chops to venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, sharing the stage with an array of musicians in the nexus between rock, jazz and the avant garde. Towers also made her mark in the upstate artists' community of Woodstock NY where she was referred to as a “bass wizard” in a ‘Woodstock Times' review. As a member of the Red Microphone, she recorded with revolutionary poet Amina Baraka for the legendary ESP-Disk label. Also a successful business owner and host of her feminist radio show, Towers' tenacity and activism have guided her journey, offering a model of empowerment for women in the arts and more. Towers has also been a member of the Dissident Arts Orchestra from the start. Creating downtown-style improvised scores to silent films. On Halloween, the Orchestra crafted a unique soundtrack to the FW Murnau terror classic ‘Nosferatu' with Towers' pulsating, throbbing fretless bass offering the vampire a voice to be reckoned with. Capping off her rebel yell for women's rights, Laurie Towers created ‘She's Raising the Bar', a weekly podcast, in 2012. As its producer and co-host, she's engaged an array of woman actors, writers, vocalists and entrepreneurs and broadcasted her show live from the NYC Women's March, in the heat of battle. A new adaptation of Chekhov's famous play, "The Seagull," by Thomas Bradshaw sets the action in the Hudson Valley, and turns the characters into a group of New York theater people struggling to live together without egos and rivalries getting in the way. Bradshaw and actors Ato Essandoh and Parker Posey join us to discuss "The Seagull/Woodstock, NY" running at the Pershing Square Signature Center through April 9th.
American rock band JOURNEY has a style that's hard to define and pigeonhole. The group was formed in San Francisco by members of Steve Miller Band and Santana in 1973. Journey had its biggest commercial success between 1978 and 1987 with Steve Perry as lead vocalist. They released a series of hit songs, including 1981's ‘Don't Stop Believin' which in 2009 became the top-selling track in iTunes history. One of its founders, music prodigy NEAL SCHON joins me today to tell us about the band's genesis, Steve Perry's departure and their latest album. The first in eleven years. We also catch up with a pop/rock singer and songwriter whose smooth but gently soulful voice helped earn him a pair of hit singles in the early '80s. Brooklyn born ROBBIE DUPREE used to sing with the group New World Rising. That band's guitarist, NILE RODGERS went on to have an amazing career as a producer, songwriter, and leader of the band CHIC. We meet Robbie at his home in Woodstock NY to hear all about the changes in the music industry and to check on what he's up to today. Say hi to one of Australia's most iconic 70's bands that helped shape the history of the local music scene. JOHN SCHUMANN and REDGUM led the way in proudly telling Australian stories. For the first time, Aussie place names and cultural intricacies became fodder for lyrics and instead of trying to sound American, the band became one of the first to show off the distinctive Aussie accent. If you don't live in Australia it's likely you've never heard the songs before but I assure you, once you've heard them, you'll never forget them! “There's still a lot of room in grocery stores for better products. So, there's a lot more that we could do.” -Nels Leader As the world continues to grapple with the issue of climate change, businesses are under pressure to find ways to operate in a more sustainable way. One way to do this is by achieving a Net Zero status. Net Zero means a company offsets all of its carbon emissions. Achieving Net Zero is a major commitment for businesses, but it is one that can have a big impact on combating climate change. As more businesses strive for net zero, we will move closer to a sustainable future. Moreover, achieving Net Zero is not only good for the environment and for the people, but it can also help businesses save money on energy costs and make them more attractive to customers and investors. Bread Alone is one of the companies that has worked hard to achieve this status. Bread Alone is a family-owned, values-driven company that has been making fresh, organic bread since 1983. Besides their tasty, honest, and affordable products, this values-driven bakery is a passionate advocate for regenerative farming and other sustainability measures. They are also committed to supporting local farmers, protecting the environment, and promoting the health of their customers. In this episode, Justine sits with Nels Leader, the CEO of Bread Alone to discuss how we can be faithful stewards of the earth. Listen in as Nels shares what we can learn from his parents, Dan and Sharon about building a resilient family business and how they were able to build their facilities and run their operations in a very sustainable way. Justine and Nels also talk about how we can find a more purpose-driven life, why we should not stop or slow down in making better products, and how big of a difference small changes can make. Meet Nels: Nels Leader is the CEO of Bread Alone, a family-owned bakery that supports sustainable business for people and for the planet. Their family moved to the Catskill Mountains in 1983 where they started their journey. Since then, Bread Alone has become the home of freshly-baked oven organic bread. Nels joined his parents Dan and Sharon in 2012 and helped them make the company's vision bigger. Nels was also trained for AI Gore's Climate Reality Project and is the co-owner of several other businesses. For the past years, Nels has been lecturing on Bard College's Sustainability Programs. Today, we can find Nels in Woodstock NY with his wife, son, and their dog. I love the community that is here on the grams, I have been lucky to meet so many great people and @kate.gos is one of them for sure. Kate chatted about how she got started with photography and about what her childhood was like on a remote Russian island near Japan. We talked about human behavior and the tragedies many countries are facing right now including Ukraine. She shared with us some of the projects that she has in mind and some of her future plans for her practice. She is going to have an exhibition in Woodstock NY this August so give her a follow for updates on that. Thank you Kate it was really lovely talking with you. Here is a little more about Kate."I was born on Sakhalin Island in the Russian East, north of Japan. After graduating from high school and art school in my hometown Korsakov, I've traveled nine time zones to study at Moscow State University. I've got a degree in journalism and I was the first in my family who obtained a college degree. When I finished high school it was the 90s, and the Soviet Union had just collapsed, when I arrived in Moscow it was chaos and now I really wish I had chosen a different major. Anyway, 10 years later, after my University graduation, in 2012 I moved to NYC, another 8 time zones. As they say, America is the land of second chances, so I've decided it was now or never to pursue my artistic career, which seemed impossible in post-soviet Russia. I've started painting but pretty quickly realized how this world works in the US and my enthusiasm went down, until the day when a friend of mine introduced me to the Yashica 120G mat. That's it, my heart was stolen and till this very day, I love how every mechanical camera sounds and I became a photographer. I mean, it became my hobby. But I wanted more, so I went to study, then COVID happened, and the study got paused. My family and I had moved to Upstate NY and my dad with my husband built a darkroom for me, so I'm still here, stuck in Woodstock with my home studio, working basically in the woods. Interesting fact - I never thought I would come back to my island, but ever since I stepped into the photography world I couldn't stop thinking about my homeland. And in 2019 I traveled there, 20 years later! Unfortunately, it was a brief trip, but I took some pictures and one of them won second prize in the international photo awards. In December 2021 I started working on a project about the native population of my island - I was supposed to go in fall 2022 to shoot there for a month, but due to world events it's been canceled. Hopefully postponed till 2023. This is my goal now, as a photographer, I found a purpose - I want to depict "Nivkhs" - the dying nation of my land.My inspiration - people and nature. My tool - medium format. I love alternative processing techniques - my latest skill - platinum palladium printing, it's a perfect combination of painting and photography, which gives me great joy! :)I am currently working on a new project called "Wild Woman".That is the reason why I can't send you my latest work, it should be unseen."Follow Kate at https://www.instagram.com/kate.gos/Photography Chat is a weekly Instagram Live @merlindb hosts every Thursday at 5pmPST/8pmESTGive me a follow if you want to see the episodes live https://www.instagram.com/merlindb/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/photographychat/donations
Planet Poet-Words in Space – NEW PODCAST! LISTEN to my November 23rd, 2021 WIOX show for my conversation with poet, music critic and founder of Parnassus Records, Leslie Gerber on his collection of poems Losing Tara, An Alzheimer's Journey, published in 2020 by Post Traumatic Press, in honor of his late wife, writer Tara McCarthy. Leslie and I will also listen to and discuss recordings released under his independent label Parnassus Records. “The spouses and loved ones of patients with dementia experience a devastating emotional burden as they watch them decline. Leslie Gerber has taken the unusual and compelling step of publishing the poems he wrote in honor of his wife during her tragic course. This is an eloquent way to memorialize their times together and also her most human qualities, which dementia progressively destroys.” - Dennis J. Selkoe MD, Coates Professor of Neurologic Diseases, Harvard Medical School Leslie Gerber was born in Brooklyn in 1943. He was graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in creative writing. For 39 years he ran a mail-order classical music business, Parnassus Records, while writing thousands of music reviews and articles. Leslie's most recent CD release is “Black Swans,” recordings of the earliest African American classical performers. In 1970 he moved to Ulster County and has lived there ever since. He began writing poetry in 1999. In addition to his latest book, Leslie had published two earlier poetry collections, Lies of the Poet and The Edge of Sleep, both published by Post Traumatic Press. Leslie has three daughters, two granddaughters and one great granddaughter. He is a proud member of the Goat Hill Poets, founded by Cheryl A. Rice and himself. He lives in Woodstock New York with his dog Winnie. Website: www.lesliegerber.net. Planet Poet's erudite and endlessly interesting Poet-At-Large Pamela Manché Pearce will also join the show this month with her musings on poetry, art and life.

Cincinnati, OH based Folk-Rock outfit, The Heavy Hours just released their latest ep, Wildflowers in August. This collection of songs was recorded in Woodstock NY, in the dead of winter. With two feet of snow on the ground, and in a small mountain town, the band was cut off from the outside world. And this was a good thing. Recording and making the best music they could was the only thing on their mind. Simone Felice, of the the Felice Brothers, produced the EP and helped guide the band in their journey to find a sound that paid homage to the past, but still felt like something new. The Heavy Hours began by rehearsing in a family owned abandoned house, and have recently been co-writing with a certain member of the Black Keys. As a touring band, the seasons have a strong connection to their travel playlists - and specific songs bring them back to very areas of the country that they visited. Thanks for listening and don't forget to review, share and subscribe to the podcast! Hailing out of Woodstock New York, Zak Levitt's love of basketball landed him a job in the Miami HEAT video room right next to future Hall of Famer Eric Spoelstra. Levitt than took his love of sports and storytelling to NBA Entertainment where long nights in the edit bay led him to become their lead director on some of their most formidable documentaries.Including the highly anticipated 20 year anniversary documentary on the Dream Team. Zack tells us what it was like to work with 11 Hall of Famers to share their memories of the 1992 Olympic Experience in Barcelona. We then transition to a documentary that I truly enjoyed on Julius the Doctor Erving. This doc was more than just a biopic piece. Zak was able to get the Doctor to open up about so much more than just basketball. And lastly we touch on Zak's highly acclaimed 30 for 30 Bad Boys. On the Detroit Pistons teams for the late 80's and early 90's. You won't want to miss a moment of the conversation on this episode of Beyond the Lens presented by Diesel Films.

After graduating in May 1969 Jon Taplin moved to Woodstock (New York) and became The Band's tour manager. In August The Band played the Woodstock Festival, later the same month Jon managed Bob Dylan and The Band's appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival in England. It was Dylan's first full-length public concert in three years. While he was in England he met the Beatles and spent quality time with George Harrison. Indeed George asked him to help stage the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971. In 1972 at the request of Mick Jagger Jon commissioned Robert Frank to make the album cover for Exile on Main Street. Moving into film production in 1973 he worked with Martin Scorsese on Mean Streets and later The Last Waltz (1978). His new book 'The Magic Years' covers those events and much more. It is a candid and insightful memoir that chronicles collaborations with seminal artists. We were delighted to be invited to interview a man who had breathed the same air as some of our musical heroes! Invisible Folk Club interviewer Jon Bickley does a great job. We've also created a special Spotify playlist that covers Jon Taplin's 'Magic Years' https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1uZQNFoJiIyKMUOeB4Wy0F
Arlen is the father of modern-day guitar instruction, and widely known as the "Master of the Telecaster". His early "Hot Licks" series of videos changed the medium by which many of us would learn guitar, and his book "Slide Guitar" influenced many of today's guitar heroes (including Greg)! Greg and Arlen go back to the beginning and talk about his upbringing, the scene in Woodstock NY, and what Arlen's been up to as of late! 1:44 - Arlen’s book “Slide Guitar” (written at 19 on tour with John Prine), and his inspiration to write it9:50 - How Arlen developed his transcription chops, music theory, and developing his ear15:09 - Growing up in a family of cartoonists, and the encouragement of artistic expression20:24 - How Arlen got turned on to early Roots music, and attending art school25:05 - Woodstock, NY, the artistic community centered around the town, linking up with John Prine, and playing in New York City35:00 - What lead Arlen to creating teaching material39:29 - Some good guitar stories - from behind the camera, on the road, etc50:56 - Arlen’s relationship with Danny Gatton61:33 - What Arlen’s been up to these days (an upcoming album, acoustic performances, clinics, oh my!)Total Length: 78:10

Honey bees aren't the only species facing serious population declines. Wild bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, and other insects, plus birds, bats, and amphibians are losing natural habitat and being forced out by invasive species, pesticides and herbicides. Pollinator pathways are a series of pollinator friendly areas that are spaced closely enough to create a habitat corridor. And for Catskills landowners, the Woodstock NY Pollinator Pathway offers simple ways to affect positive change for our pollinator pals. Committee Chair Georgia Asher tells us more. RockerMike and Rob Presents: Daniel Shaw Uppercase D and The lowercases Guitar was the first instrument that captured Daniel’s attention. Next was drumming. He wore headphones and studied In-a-gadda-da-vida every day, memorizing the drum solo and every little nuance of the recording. He also enjoyed singing along with the band Foreigner while his dad recorded it on the stereo. From age 4-11 it was air jamming, but guitar lessons changed his world. Taught to play by ear along with Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc, D quickly learned all of his favorite songs on electric guitar and air drums. Locking himself in the room with War Pigs screaming through his amp placed in the window, facing OUT, a small crowd would gather to enjoy his ability to play along. D played bass and guitar in numerous bands from his late teens to late 30’s. Growing up in Woodstock NY, he was sharing stages with the coolest local acts. His musical style ranges from rock, metal, punk, funk, to trippy grooves. D taught himself to play bass and NOT air drums by age 20. Utilizing his understanding of song structure, ability to play every instrument, sing, and intense focus on the mixing aspect, D began recording onto 4-track cassette. Finally the DR-880 Dr. Rhythm became a staple in 2008. Daniel finally had a way to create all of his original and cover songs with bass and drum patterns to work with. He spent hours on little details, testing mixdowns on various sound systems to ensure a well-balanced mix. Along the way he started making his own music videos. Using a phone or tablet for editing, and music apps, Caustic3 and Fruity Loops became the focus until present. He was never into electronic music and decided to embrace it’s wonderful existence with the intention of adding a human feel. Now he’s been mixing it all. He built a vocal booth and has a small 32-track home studio. His works are posted on social media. Gifted Overexcitabilities with John Hall “There's so much to be said about the power of music, storytelling, and connecting.” — Dianne A. Allen (24:02-24:09) Are you wondering what it’s like to grow up in an environment with different influences? In this episode, we’re going to talk about gifted overexcitabilities with John Hall, a multi-talented musician, singer, and songwriter. He’s well-known both in the music and political world. Part One of ‘Gifted Overexcitabilities with John Hall’ John and his brothers were expected to excel at whatever they did. He was exposed to music lessons from a young age, and that’s how he got involved in music. From his piano lessons at age 5 to his medal-winning French horn performance at the Ithaca College Music Festival, from his folk days of singing Weavers, Peter Paul and Mary, and Bob Dylan songs, from his obsession with the Ventures, Beach Boys, Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix, John Hall learned three things: Play, Write, Listen. Now that he's finished serving two terms as the Congressman from New York's 19th District, John is writing songs again, performing solo and with Orleans, and continuing with his environmental activism. In early 1972, John's local jam band in Woodstock turned into Orleans when first Wells Kelly and then Larry Hoppen joined the ensemble. Later that year, Lance Hoppen joined on bass, freeing Larry to play guitar and keyboard. Orleans recorded four albums in the seventies, scoring radio hits with 'Still The One' and 'Dance With Me'. “As a culture and humanity, we've evolved.” – Dianne A. Allen (26:45-26:47) John left Orleans in 1978 and made two solo records, "John Hall" and "Power." The latter featured the anti-nuclear anthem, which later became the theme of the No Nukes concerts, recorded by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor. Then followed two John Hall Band albums, and the AOR and MTV hit "Crazy (Keep On Falling)." After Wells Kelly's death in 1984, John reunited with Larry and Lance Hoppen, and they were recruited by Tony Brown of MCA Nashville to record there. The result was 1986's "Grownup Children." Since then, John has alternated between recording and touring with Orleans and doing solo projects, including "Recovered," "On A Distant Star," and "Love Doesn't Ask." Part Two of ‘Gifted Overexcitabilities with John Hall’ Along the way, environmental and political concerns have kept John moving in and out of direct community involvement. He was elected to the Ulster County Legislature in 1989 and served one term in 1990 and '91. In the late 1990s, he was elected twice as trustee of the Saugerties NY Board of Education, where his fellow trustees elected him president. He also served as a volunteer member of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater's board of directors before running successfully for Congress in 2006. “Live life in a way that's manageable, with structure and support.” – Dianne A. Allen (43:21-43:23) John Hall’s story is empowering because it teaches us that you can be interested in many different things and still be successful regardless of how others perceive you. There’s always more to someone than meets the eye. That’s why we must never judge a book by its cover. John learned how to ski in his forties to be a chaperone with her daughter’s school group. He didn’t just learn it; he mastered it and became the instructor of the year at Hunter Mountain, just south of the village of Hunter, in Greene County, New York, United States. So, if you’re afraid to step into your authenticity zone, don’t get intimidated by people telling you how hard it is. Take the time to explore, follow your inner desire and keep learning. Step into your higher calling, and live in the moment. About John Hall From his piano lessons at age 5 to his medal-winning french horn performance at the Ithaca College Music Festival, from his folk days of singing Weavers, Peter Paul and Mary, and Bob Dylan songs, from his obsession with the Ventures, Beach Boys, Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, John Hall learned to play, write, and listen. As John honed his bass and guitar skills as part of the band Kangaroo, James Taylor was gigging around the corner at the Night Owl with the Flying Machine and Jimi was backing up John Hammond at Village Gate as Jimi James and the Blue Flames. Kangaroo alternated sets for a time with a band called the Castilles, whose lead singer was Bruce Springsteen. During this time, he wrote and directed the music for the Broadway show "Morning, Noon and Night," and 1969's Obie-winning "Honest to God Schnozzola." From the another off-Broadway score came a guitar lick that became the underpinning for "Half Moon," recorded by Janis Joplin on "Pearl." John later penned songs for Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner and many more. After moving to Woodstock, John worked as a studio guitarist for Seals and Crofts, John Simon, and Little Feat, produced Bonnie Raitt’s third album, and toured with Taj Mahal, recording the double album "The Real Thing" at the Fillmore East and West. In early 1972, John's local jam band in Woodstock turned into Orleans when first Wells Kelly and then Larry Hoppen joined the ensemble. Later that year, Lance Hoppen joined on bass, freeing Larry to play guitar and keyboard. Orleans recorded four albums in the seventies, scoring radio hits with 'Still The One' and 'Dance With Me' (both certified over six million airplays in the US, and hundreds of millions of streams). John left Orleans in 1978 and made two solo records, "John Hall" and "Power". The latter featured the anti-nuclear anthem which later became the theme of the No Nukes concerts (organized by Jackson Browne, Raitt, Graham Nash and Hall) and recorded there by the Doobie Brothers with James Taylor. Then followed two John Hall Band albums (with John Troy, Bob Leinbach and Eric Parker), and the AOR and MTV hit "Crazy (Keep On Falling)". After Wells Kelly's death in 1984, John reunited with Larry and Lance Hoppen and they were recruited by Tony Brown of MCA Nashville to record there. The result was 1986's "Grownup Children." Since then John has alternated between recording and touring with Orleans, and doing solo projects including "Recovered," "On A Distant Star," and "Love Doesn't Ask," “Rock Me On the Water.” Along the way, environmental and political concerns have kept John moving in and out of direct community involvement. He was elected to the Ulster County Legislature in 1989 and served one term in 1990 and '91. Having learned to ski in his 40s, John became a certified PSIA Level 2 instructor, named 1997 Instructor of the Year by Hunter Mountain in the Catskills. He is also a lifelong sailor and has written for Cruising World Magazine. In the late 1990's, he was elected twice as trustee of the Saugerties NY Board of Education, where his fellow trustees elected him president. He also served as a volunteer member of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater's board of directors before running successfully for Congress in 2006. He was re-elected in 2008. Congressman John Hall represented New York's 19th district until 2011, when he returned to private life, and a life of music. After the Fukushima meltdowns in March 2011, he wrote and recorded the song "I Told You So," which he recorded and later performed with Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and others as part of a MUSE/No Nukes concert in Mountainville CA. Since reuniting with Orleans in August 2013, John has crossed the country half a dozen times, sharing the stage with artists including Christopher Cross, Poco, Firefall, Leo Sayer, Al Stewart, Player, Robbie Dupree, Gary Wright, and Ambrosia A live recording of John with Jonell Mosser has just been released. Drawn from a 1994 performance at the Bearsville Theater in Woodstock NY, the record shows Jonell and John as a combustible duo, her vocals and his guitar rocking the house. Since the pandemic caused all concerts to be canceled or postponed, John has been working on recordings and videos with Orleans, the latest song “Home” having been written with Johanna Hall and Don Schlitz. He is also finishing recording and mixing tracks for his forthcoming solo album “Reclaiming My Time” which will be released this winter Since reuniting with Orleans in August 2013, John has crossed the country half a dozen times, sharing the stage with artists including Christopher Cross, Firefall, Al Stewart, Player, Robbie Dupree, Gary Wright, and Ambrosia. A book detailing his journey from rocker to representative, "Still the One: A Rock'n'Roll Journey to Congress and Back," is available here from Amazon. How to Connect with Dianne A. Season 2 Episode 59 Released 11/30/20So we finally got our rig registered. It had been sitting for weeks so the first thing we wanted to do was to make it look nice and pretty. We went to Blue Beacon Truck Wash in Montgomery New york.We paid almost $50 by the time they were done it was dark out so we drove home.Next day went out to look at the rig and WOW there were areas on the rigged where the gloss and shine has been stripped off it looked chalky and dull.We went back to Blue Beacon.Show the manager. He submitted it to corporate. We decided we would hire an attorney to sue them. Our friend Scott suggested instead to go through the insurance for the damage repair. They sent an adjuster over to look at the rig and he said all that needed to be done was to Buff it back to a shineHe said the paint was faded. I explained to him that prior to the car wash the paint was not faded at all and looked great just dirty. We got two estimates each one was just over $5,000. they said that the finish needed to be compounded. Then rewaxed. One of the shops that we took it to for an estimate said he wasn't sure that even that would work and in his estimate he wrote this is a preliminary attempt to fix it.But after a short period of time if the luster fades becomes chalky again then it will be revaluated at that time.We submitted the estimates to the insurance company. We are now waiting to hear back from the insurance company. Then took the rig to Ford for the dash heat issue. We picked up the rig from Ford. Ford said that the heating issue was not a Ford issue. They said to contact Thor . I called Thor and they said to call Pro Air. Jim at ProAir was very helpful he gave me wiring diagrams and explained different things to check. He said that it sounded like the motor switch was bad. When he gave me instructions on how to test it I'm no electrician.Went to Scott in Pa.It wasn't that so according to Jim it was the head unit.So we cut the yellow wire and viola we have heat.If we want cooling we will reconnect yellow wire.Well do that for now because it's a $350.00 part. Then I moved slide lock for the front slide from the bottom rail to the top one. Much easier to put it in.We found out our rig doesn't have heated tanks :( In the spring I will put heat tape on plumbing. But for now I Ran electric line from outdoor refrigerator Because that outlet can be powered by the inverter. Bought 3 12v heater pads for the tanks. never wired 12 volt circuit before. Figured I would use the fuse that was marked "tank heat pads"But that wired for the macerator. The macerator fuse block wasn't wired to anything so that's the one I used.Replaced reverse lights with LEDs to help with backing up.The next bigger project was heat ducts.the Slide blocked 2. Moved them to front.Replace another that was torn in half when Thor installed it We had been wondering why we didn't have heat in the bathroom. SMHWe then wanted to take the rig for a run . went to Woodstock NY. Because until we get heated tanks or cold temps at night go up our camping will be very limited not only due to covid.I made some videos about the improvements I mentioned and I posted them on YouTube. This is a story about a father's enduring legacy, about a man who left this world young. While any dad who leaves before his time is worthy of consideration, this dad was world famous. He was the legendary blues harp (harmonica) player, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, vocalist and band leader the late Paul Butterfield.Today we go for a ride through Paul's old home of Woodstock, New York with his son, Gabriel Butterfield. Gabe was just 22 when his father passed. His father's fame was worldwide. The Dalai Lama invited the family to attend a private prayer and chanting to help Paul get to the next realm. In the yeasr since, Gabriel has weeded through the many stories of people portending to have known Paul. yet, what endures for Gabriel is the love that Paul and Gabriel's mother Virginia passed down to him. This is a fun yet moving interview with a man whose love for his father is boundless. Music is provided by a band formed by Gabriel and Jimmy Vivino, Paul Butterfield Revisited. Here are two performances by the band, recorded by Thom Pollard in November of 2012 at the Bearsville Theatre:Born In Chicago:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JNs2tlYVloGet Out of My Life Woman:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTsMBXxQT7IFor more information on Thom Pollard please visitwww.eyesopenproductions.comPAUL BUTTERFIELD'S PAGE ON THE ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME SITE:https://www.rockhall.com/inductees/paul-butterfield-blues-bandPaul Butterfield on stage to induct Bo Diddley into the R&R Hall of Fame:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UKL7g7BrR0Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user)

In part one of my last show, I introduced you to Dr. Beverly Nelson and her husband Michael Lee Bartlett, who are the producers and hosts of an eight-week, experiential interactive online program called “Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey.” As you may be able to tell from its title, the program uses the work of author and professor Joseph Campbell as a framework for helping people who are contemplating a move abroad, that is, people like me and my wife Leslie. If you have yet to hear Part One, I recommend you listen to at least the first few minutes, where I talk a bit about Joe Campbell, and provide some context for what you are about to hear. Better yet…listen to all of Part One, because when you first meet Beverly and Michael, I think you’ll fall in love with them, as I have. Beverly has a PhD in Psychology and a BA in Business. She has created and directed internationally recognized Healing Centers all around the world, including what has become the largest and most comprehensive holistic center in Mexico — the LifePath Center. Michael is a fellow former IBMer and entrepreneur, having founded or co-founded successful ventures in high tech, education, real estate, video and film production. During the 1970's Michael practiced as a psychotherapist and founded Ashewood Primal Center, a vibrant therapeutic community in New York City and Woodstock New York. Together Beverly and Michael help people find and follow their life’s passions, and that is why I am so pleased to be collaborating with them. I do make a commission on the sale of their "Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey" course, even though you won’t pay a penny extra for it. In fact — you’ll pay less — because at the end of this show, we make an offer, exclusive to Dance listeners, that you will want to know about. I am also collaborating with them on a break-out class for discovering one’s life passions, and I can tell you first hand that the quality, beauty and efficacy of their coursework is second to none. I am proud to be associated with it. In Part One, the three of us talked about how Michael and Beverly met, and the circumstances that led them to collaborate in picturesque San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Tragically, those circumstances included the untimely deaths of dear loved ones, but out of the ashes of their sadness a beautiful Phoenix has arisen, one wearing the radiant plumes of their own love affair and subsequent marriage, and now, the birth of “Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey.” In this Part Two, we delve deeper into the program, and how it helps couples and individuals make a life transforming decision with greater clarity, confidence and much less stress. It’s all part of my “Move to Higher Ground” theme, which is for people like me who are seeking innovative, out of the box ways to live out our sunset years in a powerful, joyful way. So please join me in Part Two of my two part interview with Dr. Beverly Nelson and Michael Lee Bartlett, and let’s learn how to make the rest of our lives, the best of our lives.
Welcome to the first show of 2019, and what an inspiring one it is. I know you are going to really like it, because it has one of those too good to be true stories behind it, which I’ll tell in a moment. But first let me provide some context. Those of you who have been following me for a while know I am a fan of the American author and Professor of Literature Joseph Campbell, who became famous for his work on the role of myth in literature, religion and ultimately, in all of human experience. You’ll find me quoting Campbell in my “Why?” Video from a few years ago, and in a recent talk I gave on my own spiritual journey. Links to both of those videos are in the show notes. Joe Campbell didn’t really become truly famous until he was well into his sunset years, his 70’s and 80’s in fact, which is an inspiration for me as a tender 62 year old. For decades Campbell quietly taught and wrote books like the “Hero with a Thousand Faces,” gathering a small but impressive group of fans, including George Lucas, Jerry Garcia, and the poet Robert Bly, who are also among my favorites. But it wasn’t until Campbell was near death that he became known to a broader audience, including me, thanks to the films "The Hero's Journey” and his video interviews with Bill Moyers, which aired on PBS as "The Power of Myth.” It was in that last film that I first heard Campbell utter the phrase that some say summarizes his life’s work: “Follow your bliss." Now, what does that mean? I’ll take a stab at it. I believe it means leading an adventurous life of questioning, discovery, and ultimately of delight and joy, a life to which we say “Yes” to our passions and “No” to resistance. When we do that, the universe conspires with us, not against us, and a world of opportunity opens up. It means becoming fully alive. This philosophy really is at the core of the Dance mission and always has been. It’s why the words “explore” and “experience” are in my tagline. It's my personal philosophy, which is why you see me traveling on a lark, constantly learning, and taking risks, most of which “fail” in the world’s eyes. I am following my path to bliss, whatever the cost. But how do we know what our bliss is? Where is that path? How to we find it so we can start our own, personal growth journey? How do we discover where our true passions lie, what is authentic to us, and what is not? That’s where my next guests can help. Dr. Beverly Nelson and her partner Michael Lee Bartlett came to my attention last fall when I was leafing through my latest issue of International Living magazine and an article about them caught my eye. It described work they are doing on a new, online course helping people who are contemplating a move abroad, and based on the work of Joesph Campbell. Called “Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey,” the course helps couples and individuals make this life transforming decision with greater clarity, confidence and much less stress. The eight week, experiential interactive online program helps you define yourself, your values and what matters most in your life so that, so that no matter what you decide about moving abroad, you will move forward in a powerful, joyful way. Well…you had to know that would catch my attention! I had already produced several shows featuring guests who were either already living abroad, or who had good reasons for doing so. It’s all part of my “Move to Higher Ground” theme, one I planned on continuing through 2019. Curious about Beverly and Michael's work, I gave them a call, and a short time later we recorded the interview you are about to hear. But that’s where things get really interesting. Little did I know then that within a few weeks I would be a guest at their lovely home in beautiful San Miguel de Allende Mexico, toasting in the warm New Year with a chilled glass of tequila, and dancing well past sunset at a local club wearing a sequined mask. Too much fun! I also became a guest at the LifePath Center, an absolutely charming B&B and holistic healing center right in the center of town, enjoying the fresh food, yoga center, and healing services of the Center’s many practitioners. You can see pictures of all of this in the show notes. Even though Beverly and Michael look like movie stars, they are no lightweights. Beverly has a PhD in Psychology and a BA in Business. She has created and directed internationally recognized Healing Centers all around the world, including what has become the largest and most comprehensive holistic center in Mexico — the LifePath Center. Michael is a fellow former IBMer and entrepreneur, having founded or co-founded successful ventures in high tech, education, real estate, video and film production, and even restaurant and catering. Michael practiced as a psychotherapist in Woodstock New York for several years, helping to establish a vibrant therapeutic community there. How they met and started working together in Mexico is a story you have to hear! Meeting Michael and Beverly is a perfect example of how finding and following your bliss opens up unforeseen opportunities. Not only have I made some dear new friends that I really admire, but now we are exploring ways to collaborate on future online courses for personal growth and transformation. I’ll talk more about that in Part Two. That’s right. My interview with Beverly and Michael is in two parts, and you are going to want to listen to both. In this first part, you’ll learn how Beverly and Michael met, and the circumstances that brought them to San Miguel. Since at the time of the interview I had not yet been to the city, I was curious to know a bit more about it, and they were happy to share. Now that I have been, well let me just say their enthusiasm is justified! In part two, you’ll learn more about the course "Moving Abroad: A Hero’s Journey” itself. Beverly and Michael also have a special offer, just for Dance listeners, that you will want to know about. Whether you are considering a move abroad, or whether you decide to stay where you are, “A Hero’s Journey," based in the work of the brilliant Joseph Campbell, will give you the insights and new capabilities to move forward into a richer and more fulfilling life. So please join me in this interview with Dr. Beverly Nelson and Michael Lee Bartlett, and let’s learn how to make the rest of our lives, the best of our lives.
Let's go back 50 years to a basement outside Woodstock New York — to the formation of a sound and an album that all these years later still shapes the musical landscape. The album is Music From Big Pink and the band is simply called The Band.

An absolutely classic MCR from July of 2015. This memorable night featured Nashville's deepest electric blues and one of the nation's most important new acoustic folk duos. The former is legendary guitarist and songwriter - icon of the Bluebird Cafe - Mike Henderson, with new music. The latter is the Woodstock NY power couple Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. Also on the bill, we'll hear head turning juke joint funk from his and her duo Smooth Hound Smith. Plus the remarkable voice and complex torch songs of breakout artist Emily West. Peter Cooper's the guest host.

Joe Magistro is the long time Drummer for Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes. He has played on all of Rich's solo studio albums, and resides in Woodstock New York, where he has done many studio sessions at the amazing Applehead Recording Studios. He is currently on a cross country tour with Rich Robinson, to support the newly released album "Flux", which is available now on Eagle Rock Entertainment. Joe recently sat down for a short interview during a tour stop in Columbus Ohio to talk about his career, and working with Rich extensively in the studio and on the road.
The air between the World Trade Center towers was this wonderful madman's playground. It was all illegal, of course. But this genius of creativity was not to be stopped.
At the end of August, 2014 I interviewed Tom Pacheco at his home in Woodstock NY.Tom talks about his amazing career as a singer/songwriter and his relationships with Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan, The Band and a host of other folk music legends. Come with me into the world of mints . . . on beyond peppermint, lemon balm, and lavender . . . all the way out to shiso, bergamot, and ground ivy. We'll learn how to recognize and utilize plants in the mint family. I'll catalog some of the dozens of useful Lamiaceae genera, including Salvia, Rosmarinus, Thymus, Oreganum, and Basilicum. After looking at some general tendencies found throughout the mint family – especially their antispasmodic, antiseptic, and antioxidant abilities – we will focus in on some of my favorites – such as Leonurus, Perilla, Monarda, and Prunella – and their special qualities. Bring your mint stories and your questions, and get ready for the magical, marvelous, medicinal mints! Marvelous Magical Mints with Susun Weed was recorded live in 2013 at the Southeast Womens Herbal Festival If you enjoy this lecture by Susun Weed...consider joining her online or inperson for a herbal medicine workshop in Woodstock NY - here are a few workshops offered in the next few months... Too far away to study in person? Susun also offers correspondence courses, online courses, mentorship, books, audio, video and more...
