On the forty- third episode of ATFT, actress/ producer Michelle Calloway and movie critic Matthieu Côté join me in celebrating Angelina Jolie for her 50th birthday!Angelina Jolie is one of the most globally beloved movie stars of our time with people admiring her through her iconic public image evolution from being the “wild child” to a humanitarian and mother. She hit the ground running in the late 90s by earning three Golden Globes and an Academy Award for her performance as Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted. She established herself as an action star by playing the titular character in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. While many know her from her action films, she quietly has built up a versatile filmography with many of her best films being hidden gems. Her brilliant and emotionally- charged dramatic talents are overshadowed by the celebrity attention she has received and being one of the most beautiful women on the planet. If her success in film isn't enough reason to celebrate her, she's a humanitarian who served for ten years as a Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. She has also been an advocate for women as her health- focused op- eds inspired women, leading for the sort- of movement as “The Angelina Effect”. She has been an inspiration to me for several years but her global impact has remained strong for over two decades. This is Michelle's second time on the podcast while this is Matthieu's third time! This episode came together rapidly and the version everyone will hear is probably Plan E. Plans were set for months to have on a returning guest to discuss Angelina but she, unfortunately, became a no- show. It would have been easier to have cancelled this episode but I didn't want to because Angelina has had such an impact on me since I was about 18 years old and this was a great opportunity to honor her. I am incredibly grateful to Matthieu and Michelle for saving this episode! Michelle is planning a second Filmmaker Forum for August this year! The date has yet to be set but the first one, which took place in March, was a major success and incredibly informative so if you're in the Jacksonville area, stay tuned for more information by following @michellecalloway on Instagram! Matthieu has several exciting interviews that will soon be available on his YouTube channel including one with the director and star of the new horror film The Ritual. He's also working on a passion project, a hockey- focused documentary, which should be out later this year! Subscribe to his YouTube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@matthieucote2272 As I mentioned, this episode came together quickly so it's definitely an eccentric casual format episode. Angelina's films from Hackers to Maria are discussed with only a few omissions, like Beyond Borders. We share our first memories of Angelina and our five favorite Angelina films. For one section of the episode, I talked about three Angelina films I especially wanted to highlight. Matthieu and I discuss his favorite Angelina film, By the Sea, at length while Michelle shares which filmmaker she hopes Angelina will work with someday. All this and more on the new episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.Photo of Angelina used in the cover art was retrieved from Flickr (link to the photo: https://www.flickr.com/photos/worldeconomicforum/346665570 and link to the license rules: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.0/ ). He was released last year after pleading guilty to a single charge under the Espionage Act and now lives in Australia.Last week, Julian Assange returned to the international stage, walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival alongside Vermont filmmaker Eugene Jarecki. Jarecki's new film, “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” chronicles Assange's crusade to reveal inconvenient truths that governments seek to bury. Jarecki's new film has been garnering awards, receiving the first-ever Golden Globe Award for best documentary, and taking the special jury prize of the L'Oeil d'or, or Golden Eye award, the documentary film prize at Cannes. At the Golden Globes, the award Jarecki received recognized his work for “combining the skills of a journalist with the voice of a poet.” The statement added, “At a time when truth is under pressure, Eugene's work reminds us of the power of storytelling to provoke, enlighten, and ultimately defend democracy itself.”Eugene Jarecki has won Emmy and Peabody awards for his previous films, including documentaries about Ronald Reagan, Henry Kissinger, and the military-industrial complex.Jarecki lives in Vermont and co-founded the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield. Tune in for a robust conversation about how storytelling can heal, reveal, and predict real life. IN THIS EPISODE: (03:35) Rhonda shares how entrepreneurship and academics came together to write crime fiction (07:27) Discussion of writing a novel and how life can mirror fiction (09:12) How Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, came to endorse Crossroads (12:56) Rhonda shares a moment from the book where a young man makes the wrong choice (15:01) Rhonda reads a passage from Crossroads describing the aftermath of a murder the night before, and Billy did not know what to do KEY TAKEAWAYS: Professional setbacks and personal tragedy drove Rhonda's journey from business professional to academic researcher and fiction writer. A humiliating experience with a business proposal motivated her to improve her writing, eventually leading her to publish Crossroads. The tragic loss of her adopted son profoundly influenced her emotional perspective, paralleling elements of her novel's plot and reinforcing her belief in the transformative power of storytelling. Writing can reflect or even predict real life, making storytelling a powerful form of personal and spiritual expression. This perspective underscores storytelling as more than mere entertainment; it's portrayed as a deeply personal and sometimes prophetic expression of the inner self. The endorsement of Crossroads by Mariel Hemingway—actress and granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway—was not just a stroke of luck, but a meaningful alignment. Hemingway resonated with the novel's central character and themes of emotional struggle and personal reinvention. Her support underscores how powerful fiction can reflect universal life experiences and invite deeper introspection. Subscribe to Reenita's Storytelling Den on Substack for free, or become a paid subscriber to watch the video version of this episode. There are performers that impact your life without you even knowing it and today's guest fits that bill. On the show, we have comedic genius, multi-award-winning actor, writer, producer, director, and television host, Billy Crystal. We've seen Billy's versatile work across all areas in the entertainment world, stand-up, improv, Broadway, behind and in front of the camera, feature films, television, live stages like SNL, and animated movies. It's fascinating how much the man has done over the span of his career---and his lengthy IMDB page is only the tip of the iceberg.Billy's career took off for his role in the 70's sitcom SOAP, where he played a gay character, Jodie Dallas. This launched him into box office hits such as When Harry Met Sally, City Slickers, Analyze This, and the kids' favorite, Mike Wazowski in Monsters, Inc. just to name a few. Aside from hosting the Oscars® a record nine times and being only one step away from an EGOT, he's a philanthropist. Billy, along with Whoopi Goldberg and the late Robin Williams created the annual fundraiser stand-up comedy show, Comic Relief, in 1986 that has over the years, raised over $60 million to support the homeless. The late 80s and early 90s were a really magical time for Billy's career. He had the box office hits Running Scared and Throw Momma from the Train. He had scene-stealing parts in the classics This is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride. There's the 1989 box office smash hit When Harry Met Sally, starring Billy alongside Meg Ryan and Carrie Fisher. The story follows Harry and Sally who had known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship. You can't talk about Billy Crystal classics without mentioning City Slickers for which he won a Golden Globes award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical/Comedy. On the verge of turning 40, an unhappy Manhattan yuppie is roped into joining his two friends on a cattle drive in the southwest.Billy's interest in entertainment started way before college. But his decision to go to NYU put some goals into place for him. He was a member of an improv/comedy group in college and soon he started to host solo standup shows. By 1978, he landed his first starring feature film role in Rabbit Test in which he starred with Joan Rivers. Towards the end of the 90s, Billy joined iconic Robert De Niro and Lisa Kudrow in the box blockbuster hit Analyze This and its sequel to Analyze That.Billy's work transcends generations and Gen Z is his newest fandom; distinctively for his role in Monster Inc. and Monsters University, Mike Wazowski. Monsters University revisits the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.Billy will reprise his role as Mike Wazowski in the Monsters at Work Disney+ series that is set for release later this year. One defining element of Billy's work, be it writing, acting, or directing is that he pulls from real-life experiences and balances funny and hard conversations effortlessly. Having started out in the business since he was 20 years old, it is absolutely thrilling to watch how he's knitted together diverse platforms and filed into an accomplished career. This Friday, May 7th, Billy's newest film, in which he wrote and directed, Here Today, stars himself and the incredibly funny, Tiffany Haddish, will be released only in theaters. These two make a seamless pairing and their chemistry is oh so charming. The intergenerational teaming of Billy and Tiffany tells a love story that is of friendship, support, and empathy. I absolutely LOVED the film. Do yourself a favor and go out and catch this gem of a film. When veteran comedy writer Charlie Burnz meets New York street singer Emma Payge, they form an unlikely yet hilarious and touching friendship that kicks the generation gap aside and redefines the meaning of love and trust.Billy has always been there to make me laugh, in good times and bad. I can not tell you what an honor and thrill it was getting to sit down and speak to a filmmaker, writer, and actor that has meant so much to me in my life.Enjoy my entertaining conversation with Billy Crystal.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

Rob Edwards is a thirty-year veteran of movies and television who wrote and produced shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color before writing two classic animated films for Walt Disney Feature Animation: the Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and The Frog, and the Academy Awards nominated Treasure Planet. His new project is the graphic novel Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls. Rob Edwards reflects on being creative for a living, the difference between tourists and pretenders and being a real professional, and how he feels obligated to both teach and entertain in his work. He also shares what it was like working on such iconic TV shows as Roc and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and managing the pressure and responsibility of being one of the few Black creative workers with his range and depth of experience in Hollywood. Rob Edwards also does some sharing about his approach to writing the new Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World and how Anthony Mackie's character “Sam Wilson” (who is now the new “Captain America”) reflects the much deeper history of the long Black Freedom Struggle and the pressure to always succeed in the face of the (near) impossible. On this special Memorial Day episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega continues with his annual tradition of reading an account of the first such remembrance day that took place at the end of the Civil War when now free Black Americans buried Union Army war dead in Charleston, South Carolina and honored their sacrifice and victory over the Confederacy with a huge parade. Chauncey also reads an account written by a member of the United States Colored Troops about his experience(s) in the Civil War and doing battle against the forces of the Confederacy who were determined to keep Black people in bondage. And Chauncey DeVega goes on a journey around his neighborhood and has a surreal series of experiences where he was lucky to not be shot by street pirates, learned from a wise honored elder on the bus, and then encountered a young man who claimed to be a time traveler. The boys head to Japan this week to discuss Akira Kurosawa's “Yojimbo”. Starring Toshiro Mifune, the film is considered one of the most influential movies of all time. It's so influential that an entire series of westerns ripped it off so good they couldn't be released in the US for years due to threats of lawsuits. Anyway, this film is awesome, but did the boys think it stands up to the other Kurosawa greats? Grab a beer and tune in!  Our phone number is 646-484-9298.
