    Little Kids, Big Hearts

On this episode, three kids — Charlie from Brooklyn, Knox from Denver, and Sienna from Houston — join LKBH host Todd Loyd to discuss the great outdoors — and how nature makes them feel. The kids and Todd then hike up an enormous imaginary mountain to travel to the Land of Qook-a-lackas … arriving JUST at the right moment to help a Qook-a-lacka friend, Qwiffin (played by the amazing Maulik Pancholy), grow a "memory garden." What is a memory garden?!Qwiffin explains: "Well, it's a garden, but instead of being made out of dirt and seeds and the power of photosynthesis, it grows in a different way: It grows from our memories of being outdoors in nature." The kids and Todd help Qwiffin brainstorm amazing memories of nature in all four seasons: ❄️,

Gary Sinise's stage, film and television career has spanned more than four decades. In 1974, at 18 years old, he co-founded Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company. 20 years later, for his performance as Lt Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump, he received nominations for Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Academy Awards, and earned the Best Supporting Actor Award from the National Board of Review and the Commander's Award from the Disabled American Veterans. Other film credits include Apollo 13, Ransom, Snake Eyes, Impostor, The Green Mile, Mission to Mars and The Human Stain. For over 40 years, Gary has stood as an advocate on behalf of America's service members. In 2003, after several USO handshake tours, he formed the “Lt. Dan Band” and began entertaining troops serving at home and abroad. Over the years, the 13-piece cover band has performed hundreds of shows for charities and fundraisers supporting wounded heroes, Gold Star families, veterans and troops around the world. In 2011, to expand upon his individual efforts, he established the Gary Sinise Foundation with the mission to serve and honor America's defenders, veterans, first responders, Gold Star families and those in need. The foundation remains committed to finding new and exciting ways to give back to those who sacrifice for our nation and encouraging others to do the same has become his personal quest and what he hopes will endure as a legacy of service to others. In 2008, he was given the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian honor awarded to citizens for exemplary deeds performed in service of the nation. He is only the third actor ever to receive this honor. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 316: Adam Newport-Berra The Studio creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg exploited every part of their knowledge and experience in the film industry to find the show's humor. Cinematographer Adam Newport-Berra worked closely with Rogen and Goldberg to achieve the show's signature style. They found the most dynamic ways to shoot scenes, with camera movements that immerse the audience in the characters' anxiety and panic. “It meant moving with the characters, moving through spaces, and finding ways to just keep the momentum of a scene going,” Adam explains. “We made very strong decisions early in the process. We're only gonna shoot with one camera, we're gonna shoot every scene in one shot, we're gonna shoot with one lens. It funnels down your choices and your options on set in a way that I think is really special. I think we make the most creative decisions when we're limited.” The Studio relies on nimble, handheld camera work on gimbals and magnetic rigs for its many one-shot takes. The crew avoided over-intellectualizing each scene, prioritizing a dynamic feel and incorporating homages to numerous films. “I think a lot of it really came down to the writing and the material,” says Adam. “Seth and Evan are very smart. They've been doing this for a long time. They know what they like and they leaned into that in the writing.” While a script provided the foundation, many scenes were reworked on set. Rogen and Goldberg would collaborate with the actors to refine the rhythm and enhance the material. Actors frequently contributed lines and ideas, leading to on-the-spot script revisions. However, improvisation had to fit into the impeccable timing for both the acting and camera work, leaving little room for error. Some shots required 20 takes, with the initial few serving as warmups. “It was a very non-traditional way to make a show,” Adam notes, “but everyone's firing on all cylinders, everyone's bringing 100 percent.” Rather than creating traditional shot lists, Rogen and Goldberg would work out complex camera moves with the crew directly on location. Often, they'd envision a desired shot and then structure the scene to organically lead to it. The crew and actors would block and rehearse scenes together and separately, allowing the story to unfold naturally. For a show as dynamic as The Studio, Adam learned to keep the lighting as simple as possible. The lighting had to take a backseat to the camera movement, so typically, every episode relied on natural light. Adam trusted in modern camera sensor technology and the colorist to ensure the actors looked their best. But he did have opportunities to experiment with light and shadow in specific episodes, such as “The Missing Reel,” which embraced a film noir look, and “The Golden Globes,” which used stage lighting and uplighting on the tables. “I think what works about this show was the fact that it does skewer itself, it is self-deprecating, it does show how absurd our life is and it was kind of refreshing to be able to talk about that publicly,” says Adam. “A lot of the people in my life don't understand what I do, so it's been fun to tell these stories and to show how absurd our profession is, the conflict between art and commerce, and how much we care about it.” Find Adam Newport-Berra: https://adamnewportberra.com/ Instagram: @adamnewportberra The Studio is on Apple TV+ Sponsored by Hot Rod Cameras: https://hotrodcameras.com/ Sponsored by Laowa by Venus Optics: https://www.venuslens.net/ The Cinematography Podcast website: www.camnoir.com YouTube: @TheCinematographyPodcast Facebook: @cinepod Instagram: @thecinepod Blue Sky: @thecinepod.bsky.social

This week on The Analysis, Bob Pantalone welcomes back film fanatic and pop culture critic Brittney Brown for a deep dive into Apple TV's breakout hit The Studio—a smart, satirical rollercoaster produced by and starring Seth Rogen. From Martin Scorsese directing a Kool-Aid Man movie to Bryan Cranston mangling lobster at a blackjack table, The Studio hilariously pulls back the curtain on the chaotic, ego-filled, and often absurd world of modern moviemaking. Brittney and Bob unpack their favorite episodes, dig into how real-life industry pressures show up in the storytelling, and reflect on Rogen's evolution as a creator who's not afraid to make himself the punchline.

Composer Alan Menken is the winner of more Academy Awards in competitive categories than any other living person. He's best known for his scores for the animated Disney films including The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. His first big hit was the musical Little Shop Of Horrors - one of several he created with lyricist Howard Ashman, his longtime writing partner. Other stage musicals include Sister Act, The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, and Hercules, which recently opened in London's West End. Alan Menken also wrote the scores for Disney films Mirror Mirror, Enchanted and Tangled. As well as eight Academy Awards, he has also won eleven Grammys, seven Golden Globes, two Emmys and a Tony Award.Alan talks to John Wilson about his childhood in New York and the expectations of his parents that he would follow family tradition and become a dentist like his father. A musical talent from a young age, he recalls how seeing Walt Disney's Fantasia was the start of thinking about the marriage of music with story and images. Despite initial ambitions to be a singer-songwriter, enrolling in a workshop in New York for musical theatre composers, lyricists, and librettists led by composer Lehmann Engel taught him how to write for the stage. It is also through Engel that he met lyricist and director Howard Ashman with whom he went on to write many of the hit scores credited as the driving force behind the Disney Renaissance of the 1980s and 1990s. Tragically, Howard Ashman was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 and died at the age of 40 in 1991.Producer: Edwina Pitman

Gillian Anderson's breakthrough television role in the sci-fi series The X Files made her a global star in 1993, and she played cool-headed Agent Dana Scully for nearly a decade. She also starred in period dramas, including an acclaimed film adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel The House Of Mirth and, on television, in Bleak House, Great Expectations and War and Peace. Her theatre credits include A Doll's House, A Streetcar Named Desire and All About Eve, all of which saw her nominated for Olivier Awards. Gillian Anderson has won Golden Globe and Emmy Awards for the X Files, and also for The Crown in which she played Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. More recently, she found a new generation of fans for role as a sex therapist in the series Sex Education. Her latest film is The Salt Path, adapted from the bestselling memoir by Raynor Wynn.Gillian Anderson tells John Wilson how, after being born in Chicago, she moved with her parents to Crouch End, London, when she was five, and then to Michigan at the age of 11. After what she describes as ‘rebellious' teenage years, she studied at Chicago's DePaul University with drama teacher Ric Murphy, whom she cites as a major influence on her early acting ambitions. After a series of minor stage roles in New York, she auditioned for The X Files and the role of Agent Scully changed her life. She also chooses the actor Meryl Streep as a major inspiration after seeing her with Robert Redford in the 1985 romantic drama film Out Of Africa. Gillian also reveals how the work of the Serbian-born conceptual performance artist Marina Abramović has also been an influential cultural figure for her.Producer: Edwina Pitman

This week, the boys head back to 2007 to spin another Roger Deakins film, “No Country For Old Men”, currently streaming on Paramount+. While other shows have covered the film, we shoot from the hip and discuss how it felt to re-watch it and what it means to us. F those other stuffy critic narcs. The cinematographer from Dave's homeland had a helluva a year with three award-winning films, this one winning Best Picture at the Oscars, and cementing the Coen Brothers as industry elites, much to their Chigurh (that's a movie joke). Steve McQueen is one of Britain's most acclaimed filmmakers and artists. He is the recipient of the Academy Award for Best Picture, two BAFTA Awards, the Caméra d'Or, a Golden Globe, and the Turner Prize. McQueen's work includes his first feature-length film Hunger about Bobby Sands and the 1981 Irish hunger strike, the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave, the BBC anthology Small Axe, and his most recent film Blitz. In April 2025 McQueen joined us live on the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss the themes of his new book Resistance. Accompanied by a major exhibition of the same name at Turner Contemporary, Resistance is a landmark collection of photographs and essays charting a century of British activism. Speaking alongside author Gary Younge, McQueen explored the power of collective action and uncover the often-overlooked stories of individuals who have been instrumental in forming modern Britain. McQueen discussed how acts of resistance have shaped Britain and the powerful role of photography as a catalyst for change. From the radical suffrage movement in 1903 through key moments including the Battle of Cable Street, the Black People's Day of Action, Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp and the Miners' Strike; onto protests against environmental destruction, struggles for LGBTQ+ and disability rights; and the largest protest in Britain's history: the march against the War in Iraq in 2003. ----- This is the first instalment of a two-part episode. I'm excited to sit down with a very talented writer, entrepreneur, and academic researcher, Rhonda Parker Taylor. Her debut novel, Crossroads, is rooted in personal tragedy—the loss of her adopted son—and shaped by her journey through professional setbacks. We explore how fiction can be a spiritual mirror, and how her story caught the attention of Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway. You'll also hear a gripping excerpt from Crossroads, capturing the haunting aftermath of a life-altering choice that will change a young man's life. Tune in for a robust conversation about how storytelling can heal, reveal, and predict real life. IN THIS EPISODE: (03:35) Rhonda shares how entrepreneurship and academics came together to write crime fiction (07:27) Discussion of writing a novel and how life can mirror fiction (09:12) How Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway, came to endorse Crossroads (12:56) Rhonda shares a moment from the book where a young man makes the wrong choice (15:01) Rhonda reads a passage from Crossroads describing the aftermath of a murder the night before, and Billy did not know what to do KEY TAKEAWAYS: Professional setbacks and personal tragedy drove Rhonda's journey from business professional to academic researcher and fiction writer. A humiliating experience with a business proposal motivated her to improve her writing, eventually leading her to publish Crossroads. The tragic loss of her adopted son profoundly influenced her emotional perspective, paralleling elements of her novel's plot and reinforcing her belief in the transformative power of storytelling. Writing can reflect or even predict real life, making storytelling a powerful form of personal and spiritual expression. This perspective underscores storytelling as more than mere entertainment; it's portrayed as a deeply personal and sometimes prophetic expression of the inner self. The endorsement of Crossroads by Mariel Hemingway—actress and granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway—was not just a stroke of luck, but a meaningful alignment. Hemingway resonated with the novel's central character and themes of emotional struggle and personal reinvention. Her support underscores how powerful fiction can reflect universal life experiences and invite deeper introspection. Subscribe to Reenita's Storytelling Den on Substack for free, or become a paid subscriber to watch the video version of this episode. Rob Edwards is a thirty-year veteran of movies and television who wrote and produced shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color before writing two classic animated films for Walt Disney Feature Animation: the Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and The Frog, and the Academy Awards nominated Treasure Planet. His new project is the graphic novel Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls. Rob Edwards reflects on being creative for a living, the difference between tourists and pretenders and being a real professional, and how he feels obligated to both teach and entertain in his work. He also shares what it was like working on such iconic TV shows as Roc and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and managing the pressure and responsibility of being one of the few Black creative workers with his range and depth of experience in Hollywood. Rob Edwards also does some sharing about his approach to writing the new Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World and how Anthony Mackie's character “Sam Wilson” (who is now the new “Captain America”) reflects the much deeper history of the long Black Freedom Struggle and the pressure to always succeed in the face of the (near) impossible. On this special Memorial Day episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega continues with his annual tradition of reading an account of the first such remembrance day that took place at the end of the Civil War when now free Black Americans buried Union Army war dead in Charleston, South Carolina and honored their sacrifice and victory over the Confederacy with a huge parade. Chauncey also reads an account written by a member of the United States Colored Troops about his experience(s) in the Civil War and doing battle against the forces of the Confederacy who were determined to keep Black people in bondage. And Chauncey DeVega goes on a journey around his neighborhood and has a surreal series of experiences where he was lucky to not be shot by street pirates, learned from a wise honored elder on the bus, and then encountered a young man who claimed to be a time traveler.
