On this episode of TFTB Film Club, our film nerds revisit the 2014 Sci-fi hit, Edge of Tomorrow. It's a great film, and there has long been talk of a sequel. Fingers crossed, Tom takes a break from completing impossible missions long enough to deliver on a long-anticipated part two. We'd love to see more Live, Die, Repeat on the big screen. Please let us know if there is a film that you want us to review on the podcast! Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Welcome back to Born to Watch, where this week the team tackles the endlessly rewatchable, criminally underappreciated Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Strap in as Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land gear up for a sci-fi action loop fest featuring Tom Cruise in one of his most against-type roles, Emily Blunt as a full-metal badass, and a time-travel plot that actually sticks the landing. Enjoy our Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Review! The boys jump right into the paradox-riddled battlefield, first marveling at how this epic blockbuster somehow bombed in the US, despite being everything a great action movie should be. They blame lousy marketing, title confusion (was it Live Die Repeat?), and the fact that in 2014, Cruise was still on Hollywood's naughty step thanks to Oprah's couch. But now? It's cult-classic gold.Whitey kicks off by calling out just how rare it is to see Cruise playing the weasel, Major Cage is an ad man thrown into combat, clueless and terrified. For Dan, this fish-out-of-water arc makes the movie shine, watching Cruise go from smug coward to unstoppable warrior. Damo agrees, even calling Edge of Tomorrow his number one Cruise performance, yep, he goes there.Emily Blunt earns unanimous praise as Rita Vrataski, the “Angel of Verdun” and all-around exosuit-slaying legend. She's fierce, stoic, and fit as hell, basically the action heroine we didn't know we needed in 2014. Her iconic push-up entrance gets a lot of airtime (and a few longing sighs), and the team agrees she holds her own, and then some, against Cruise. And what would a Born to Watch ep be without the usual blend of insight and irreverence? We get tangents on everything from duck anatomy (cloacas, anyone?) to Bill Paxton's legendary status as the only man killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and an Alien. The Paxton love is real. The pod dives into director Doug Liman's sharp visuals and crisp pacing, and shout out screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who somehow turns a convoluted time loop premise into a tight, clever, and emotional thrill ride. Liman's resume (Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) gets the props it deserves, and there's a great sidebar on the upcoming Road House remake, complete with hot takes on Jake Gyllenhaal. As always, the “Hit, Sleeper, Dud” segment delivers, with Gone Girl getting the nod as a masterful hit, Kevin Costner's 3 Days to Kill as a solid sleeper, and Lucy (sorry, ScarJo) landing squarely in dud territory. Bonus points for Damo's vivid breakdown of Ben Affleck's infamous side-dick scene. The episode also features a glorious Cruise countdown. Each host reveals their top five Tom Cruise films, expect Jerry Maguire, Collateral, Top Gun: Maverick, and of course, Edge of Tomorrow, to make appearances. Damo even throws in Tropic Thunder, because who can forget Les Grossman? Then there's the philosophical stuff: How long was Cage actually in the time loop? (Answer: a hell of a long time). Was blackmailing the general really the best plan? (Debatable). And what's the real ending? (Whitey thinks it's Cruise's “now you're gonna bone me” smile).Oh, and voicemails are back! Listeners call in to rant about The Bodyguard, praise the pod's Whitney Houston renditions, and drop the occasional F-bomb. Classic Born to Watch fan energy.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Edge of Tomorrow Cruise's most underrated film? Would you waste 300 time loops trying to get with Emily Blunt? Did this movie deserve to flop—or is it a misunderstood masterpiece?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#BornToWatch #EdgeOfTomorrow #TomCruise #EmilyBlunt #MoviePodcast #SciFiMovies #DougLiman #TimeLoopMovies #LiveDieRepeat #FilmDiscussion #UnderratedGems #CinephileApproved

It's our second spooky episode of spooky season and we've decided its finally time to cover a Gartbage touchstone, a part of our specific heritage: it's SHAUN OF THE DEAD from 2004.We're talking about the inspirations for the film, zombies in general, synthesizing genre convention vs parodying genre tropes, and the lost art of back-of-DVD writing. This movie hit at a very formative time for us, so we're talking teen years, the doors to film that this movie opened to us, and how it expanded our vocabulary. And yes, we talk about Queen.Next time we're covering a movie we've longed to discuss: the Tom Cruise death vehicle EDGE OF TOMORROW, aka LIVE DIE REPEAT!

Memorial Day is a good time to talk about a war movie, even if the intense Edge Of Tomorrow is almost as witty as it is heart-pounding. The one that's better known as "Live Die Repeat" has a Groundhog Day-esque hook as military hype man Tom Cruise restarts a day every time he dies. Emily Blunt is in "keep up with me" badass mode while Cruise uncharacteristically plays a coward who doesn't have all the answers, but eventually learns (most of) them. Director Doug Liman has built an excellent resume these past 3 decades and he's just about at his best guiding the Edge Of Tomorrow cast and crew through their "let's do it again" paces. Our 592nd episode is ready to airdrop onto the beach to take on the vicious aliens who are determined to take over the planet, so pop your buds into your ears and celebrate the holiday hearing us yap about how the Mimics and the humans of Earth fight in France...over and over again. In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which officially kicks off phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and The Wasp. Together, with Hope's parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible. Many spoilers in this episode. But if that doesn't bother you, read on. Awaiting your arrival are the Hourglass Twins, a “double planet” (this is a real term), where two celestial bodies are locked together in their orbit around the sun. One is slowly spraying away the sands on its surface to reveal mysteries buried deep. Ember Twin receives all this sand, and you must explore it quickly before its secrets are buried forever, until of course the sun supernovas and you die…. It's time to take your first journey into space, little Hearthian. Blast off into an alien solar system to uncover the strange physics and mechanics of planets you've only dreamed of….Wait didn't we say this already? Yep – it's a time loop. So maybe this time you'll explore Brittle Hollow with a black hole at it's center. Or maybe it's volcanic moon? You have 22 minutes before the sun goes bang and we start this all over again. Outer Wilds (the game) believes in you. It knows you will figure out it's mysteries, even if it takes you a few loops. There is almost no point in beating the game – every little puzzle or planetary quirk is the best victory you could hope for. Outer Wilds' story, on the other hand, doesn't believe in you. It treats you like a kid, and indeed, it seems like all the characters in this game are themselves children. Yet while that's a miss, nothing could drag down the awe, wonder, and majesty of this solar system. Don't rush it, enjoy the ride, and roast a marshmallow.

Halo Infinite is out! I've played it! The green boy is back in town! Anyway that doesn't matter, because we also watched Star Track: First Contact (1996), which takes up most of the time in this episode, and in Retro Corner, George is knocking out all da Marios: Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island. It was released as "Super Mario World 2" here, but we all know that's horseshit. It's like when they decided Edge of Tomorrow should be titled Live Die Repeat now. Nobody actually calls it that. Or remember when they renamed Lady Ghostbusters to "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call"? Dumb. Anyway, the Deus Ex video referenced often in this episode is Deus Ex: The Recut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUfZZbrXVAw Theme song by David Cassel Outro music: "Opium Tea" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Whether we like it or not, Doug Liman has now become a friend of the show as we review his 2014 sci-fi blockbuster Edge Of Tomorrow. Tom Cruise tries to convince us he's not an action badass as he plays Cage, a regular dude thrust into the front lines of an alien invasion and inadvertently gifted the ability to reset the day upon death. From there he must enlist the help of Emily Blunt to video game his way through the situation and destroy the alien Mimics. This Groundhog Day concept implemented into the large scale action creates a lot of fun moments, and it's great to see the film make the most of it's premise creatively. After the discussion listen out for our mini No Time To Die review, as well as our debate surrounding your favourite Christopher Nolan movies.

Disaster Artists: The Post-Apocalyptic Podcast

This week we Live Die Repeat with one of the best science fiction/action movies of the last decade: Edge of Tomorrow starring the beautiful, smart, funny, and extraordinarily talented Emily Blunt... and some other guy. He isn't really important.   Based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and released in 2014, the film was considered a failure at the box office, but thanks to the positive critical response and word-of-mouth became a hit on home release and streaming. On this podcast we explain the unexplainable. We solve the unsolvable. Our method is simple: We take the tiniest problem you might have, the grain of sand scratching at the back of your mind, and we roll it down a hill to see what it might pick up along the way, until that grain of sand has picked up dirt and sticks, until it's grown and grown, until it's the size of the Earth itself. Does that mean that any question, any problem, no matter how small or dumb, when properly spun out past its breaking point, can explain the important truths of life itself, of our existence on this planet? Probably not, but we'll keep trying for some reason. So ask away! Just don't ask us to explain this podcast. Fifty episodes in, it's abundantly clear that's one question we'll never answer. Discussed: Valentine's Day, Valentine's Boxing Day, what this podcast is, David Lynch, a Mythbuster, busting, Thimbleweed Park, real-life hint system, staying on the phone, Albert Brooks, the quantum physics of the universe, y'all, the Google/Facebook mega-matrix, Alexa, J.J. Abrams, 4468 Cloverfield, the incomprehensible infinitude of data we have at our disposal, trading hint futures on Wall St., real-life save system, Edge of Tomorrow, Live Die Repeat, respawning to prevent organ failure, Silicon Valley anti-toxin tech bro Peter Thiel, the most useful life (to benefit Peter Thiel), Lore Lord Bean, Important If True 35: "Hammacher, Schlemmer, and You", the death of tragic goose Thomas, the mixing up of Flemish words, too much clam in the beverage, Clamato, massively popular Canadian drink the Caesar, weathered old bromides Thank you all so much for listening to 50 episodes of Important If True! Our headliner is the highly anticipated Blade Runner sequel directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. There may be reasons to be worried about it but you won't find any on this podcast, the excitement will slow zoom toward you and replicate. The 2nd trailer in our lineup is called Super Dark Times which is an awesome and slightly uncomfortable title given that the movie is about teenagers. The fulcrum is the 2017 remake of Flatliners with Ellen Page taking the lead and it looks like there is a slim chance they chose to do something new with this idea and there is a strong possibility this one could fall "flat" at the box office and "die". The 4th trailer stars Vince Vaughn and comes to us from the writer/director of Bone Tomahawk and that movie has a lot of clout with the gang at TPP so we're on board even if it is called Brawl in Cell Block 99. The lineup comes to a close with American Made starring Tom Cruise and it is directed by Edge of Tomorrow and Bourne Identity director Doug Liman. It looks like Doug and Tom may have a bit of bromance going on with Live Die Repeat and Repeat just around the corner and speaking of things that repeat didn't Johnny Depp already make this movie? Stick around for the Burden List and the Intern Archive Update.
