In this episode of Where Brains Meet Beauty we meet Kevin Kim the Director of Beauty & Personal Care Investment Banking at Raymond James. His career journey didn't begin with balance sheets and deal rooms it began with medicine. As the oldest son of two psychiatrists, Kevin grew up assuming he'd follow in their footsteps. But by late high school, he realized his path needed to be his own. Drawn to a more global career, he pivoted from pre-med aspirations to business, ultimately landing in investment banking. His early years at Houlihan Lokey provided a crash course in analytics and resilience. But financial services M&A, mortgage servicing rights and insurance deals left him craving work that was more dynamic, more connected to culture. That pivot came when he joined boutique bank Financo in New York, where a chance partnership with beauty M&A legend Vinetta Coleridge introduced him to founder-led brands and the artistry of storytelling in finance. From helping Lily Gordon of First Aid Beauty raise early capital, to later selling the brand to P&G, Kevin learned that beauty transactions are never just about numbers, they're about people. Founders bring vision, quirks, and dreams to the table, and he leaned on skills inherited from his psychiatrist parents: listening deeply, decoding motivations, and helping brands show up as their best selves when it matters most.Today at Raymond James, Kevin has worked on more than 25 beauty deals, guiding brands through capital raises, acquisitions, and exits. He and his team specialize in founder-led businesses, translating brand “sparkle” into financial value while advising buyers on how to preserve the magic post-acquisition. His lens is global covering fragrance booms in Paris, K-beauty trends from Seoul, and indie darlings in Sephora aisles. His leadership style reflects the same ethos: hands-on, people-first, and rooted in immersion. New analysts join him on “Sephora field trips,” learning that to advise in beauty, you must love the category, feel the consumer pulse, and respect its nuances. For Kevin the real thrill isn't just closing a deal it's knowing that a beloved brand has a shot at its next chapter, that founder visions are honored, and that beauty continues to evolve as a global language.Thank you to our sponsor Beauty Connect - get 10% off tickets with code WBMB.

How Internal Employee Experience Drives Exceptional Customer Service  Shep interviews Taylor Scott, Founder of Lead with Hospitality, LLC, and author of Give Hospitality. He talks about how living and working from a place of hospitality can transform both employee experiences and customer relationships.  This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more:    How does a positive company culture directly impact customer satisfaction?  How does an employee's internal experience translate to a better customer experience?  Why is it important for organizations to align their hiring practices with their core values?  How can businesses differentiate between providing transactional service and building genuine customer relationships?  How can leadership inspire employees to consistently deliver exceptional service to customers?  Top Takeaways:    True hospitality is about living and working with generosity. It is about giving kindness, compassion, encouragement, and making people feel important, whether they're customers or coworkers.  A great customer experience always begins with a strong internal culture. When employees are happy and treated well, they are more likely to treat customers with respect and kindness.  What happens behind the scenes of an organization shows up for the customer every time. A positive work environment leads to employees who want to stay, work hard, and care about the company's success.   When a new employee joins a company, their first experiences matter just as much as a customer's first impression. Instead of overwhelming them with boring paperwork, give them a chance to experience the best parts of the brand right away.   Imagine if, on your first day, you got to truly experience the brand and enjoy what makes it special, instead of just filling out paperwork. Meaningful onboarding makes new hires feel welcome and comfortable, and teaches them about the brand's values more effectively than any paperwork can.   When there is alignment, employees feel like they belong, which inspires them to give their best for the customers. Finding employees who share the same values as your organization is the key to building a strong team.   Lasting business success comes from building real relationships with customers and employees, not just completing quick transactions. Make every interaction, at every stage of the journey, an opportunity to connect and leave a lasting positive impression.   Simple acts of recognition like calling someone by name, thanking them for their loyalty, or leaving a handwritten note can have a huge impact. These small gestures, which are often free or inexpensive, show customers that they are seen and valued, not just another number.  Consistent positive experiences build trust. No matter where your customers interact with your brand, whether on an app, in person, or through customer service, the experience should feel consistent and reliable.   Plus, Taylor talks about his new book, Give Hospitality, a story about how an uplifting, generous culture transforms both customers and employees. Tune in!  Quote:   "The essence of hospitality is the ability to make people feel welcome, comfortable, and important."  About:     Taylor Scott is an inspirational keynote speaker and organizational development consultant. He is a best-selling author, and his new book, Give Hospitality: A Hopeful Story of What Happens When We Live, Work, and Love from a Place of Generosity, is now available on Amazon.  Shep Hyken is a customer service and experience expert, New York Times bestselling author, award-winning keynote speaker, and host of Amazing Business Radio.    Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Medsider Radio, we sat down with Howard Rosen, co-Founder and CEO of Evident Vascular, a company developing an AI-powered intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) platform to improve vascular imaging and intervention. Before co-founding Evident, Howard held senior leadership roles at Intact Vascular and Vesper Medical, guiding both companies through successful acquisitions by Philips. He also served in executive roles at Haemonetics and BG Medicine, and spent over two decades at Boston Scientific, where he held a range of leadership positions across the peripheral and cardiovascular franchises. In this interview, Howard shares why launching right — not fast — is the key to success in medtech. He breaks down how Evident built early momentum by investing in deep market validation, engaging KOLs as true collaborators, and resisting scope creep at every turn. Howard also unpacks the company's deliberate regulatory strategy, using early FDA engagement as a tool to de-risk development. On the fundraising front, he explains why board composition matters more than valuation, and why strategic acquirers respond best to credibility, not cold outreach. Before we dive into the discussion, I wanted to mention a few things:First, if you're into learning from medical device and health technology founders and CEOs, and want to know when new interviews are live, head over to Medsider.com and sign up for our free newsletter.Second, if you want to peek behind the curtain of the world's most successful startups, you should consider a Medsider premium membership. Andrew shares insights from his book, "The Four Faces of Frustration," and emphasizes the need for leaders to create environments that foster growth and engagement. Takeaways Leadership is about causing possibility in volatile environments. People want to know their work has meaning beyond just numbers. Flexibility in leadership allows for better control and adaptability. Inspiration comes from within, while motivation often looks outward. Hiring for attitude and cultural fit is more important than skills. Clarity around values leads to higher employee commitment. Frustration can reveal underlying communication styles. Small behavioral changes can lead to significant impacts in teams. Understanding generational dynamics is crucial for effective leadership. In episode 145 of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Dimond talks once again to Rachael Wilde- the founder of both Bouf Haircare and tbh Skincare. Rach has been on the show before, back in April 2022, to talk about tbh, but this is the first time a founder has joined me for a second time to talk about an entirely new brand. I wanted to talk predominantly about Bouf today, so if you do want to hear about the tbh launch and Rach's story as a founder, you can find that episode back in season 4.That said, we did have over three years of tbh catch up to do and, in Rach's words, the last 3 years have really been where everything has happened- the brand launched into over 400 Priceline stores in March 2023 and Coles later that year, merged with Boost Lab the following month to create parent company York St Brands, and rebranded earlier this year ahead of global expansion. Bouf, Rachael's newest venture and the third brand within the York St stable, was developed in a similar manner to tbh- Rachael was presented with patented hair growth tech called the FGF5 protein, she looked at the clinical, tried it herself over several months, and upon seeing results, decided to take that tech to market in the form of a shampoo, conditioner, leave in treatment, hair growth tonic and a digestible hair growth supplement. In this conversation, Rachael shares the reason behind that now infamous Bouf launch campaign that saw brand ambassador Indy Clinton wearing a wig, the detail behind 2023's York St Brands merger and tbh skincare's subsequent growth, and how she and her team survived an internet hate campaign that, quite literally, captured the attention of the world. Before starting her own company from scratch, Smith was a strategy and operations consultant. After years of relying on processed foods because of her demanding job, she switched to a Paleo diet in hopes of reaping the health benefits. Disappointed with the lack of store-bought options for her new lifestyle, Smith started making recipes of her own using healthier ingredients like almond flour and coconut sugar. With no background in food production or distribution, Smith reached out to her local Whole Foods when she was ready to sell her now-famous Almond Flour Muffin Mix. When the chain agreed to sell it on its shelves, Smith was eager to grow her business. She went back to school to build on the skills she acquired as a consultant and develop new ones so she could expand her line of products and distribute them widely. Today, Simple Mills is sold in over 30,000 stores nationwide, and Flowers Foods recently acquired the business for $795 million, marking one of the biggest female-founder exits in recent CPG history.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Breaking Barriers and Building Community: Brittney Lincoln's Guide to Women in FranchisingIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, Josh Elledge sits down with Brittney Lincoln, Founder of Females in Franchising, to explore the opportunities and challenges for women in the franchising industry. Brittney shares her journey, insights on gender dynamics, and practical strategies for women looking to succeed in franchising. This conversation highlights the power of mentorship, community, and emerging franchise opportunities, offering a roadmap for aspiring and current female entrepreneurs in the space.Empowering Women in a Male-Dominated IndustryBrittney explains that franchising remains heavily male-dominated, with women holding only about 20% of C-suite roles and owning less than 30% of franchise establishments. Fewer than 10% of franchisor companies are female-founded, and women receive less than 2% of venture capital funding. She points out that the gap is driven by lack of awareness, limited industry networks for women, and broader challenges such as access to capital. To address this, Brittney founded Females in Franchising — a community designed to connect women working in corporate franchise roles, female franchise owners, women-owned vendor businesses, and aspiring entrepreneurs. The platform offers a supportive space for sharing experiences, learning from experts, and accessing resources tailored to women in the industry. The drama is heating up in crypto M&A. LayerZero, the omnichain interoperability protocol, shocked the market with a $110 million bid to acquire Stargate DAO — the very bridge it originally launched. Then Wormhole jumped in, asking the DAO to pause the vote so it could make a counter-offer. This episode unpacks the first-ever so-called onchain bidding war: how to value DAOs like real businesses, why LayerZero and Wormhole are fighting over Stargate, and whether this deal marks the beginning of a consolidation wave across crypto. Guests David Nage of Arca and M&A advisor Lawson Bae of Relayzero break down the numbers, the strategy, and what this turning point means for the industry. John Yoo is over in Korea this week, where he says he is "lecturing," but we know he's really just arranging to smuggle back a ton of tariff-free Korean barbecue sauce. So in his absence Steve and Lucretia attempted to hold alive live taping streamed on YouTube (in Steve's case accompanied by Bad Rock rye whisky that "Pizza Bob" supplied directly to him this week), but we missed a technical step in the preparation process and couldn't get it to work. But we have posted the video anyway on our all-new 3WHH Podcast YouTube Channel. And we'll aim to get the livestream option working my next week. In anything case, we did have a small audience join us live on the Zoom webinar, and we fielded a number of listener and reader questions, culminating in a long discussion of good books about the American Founding, to get a jump on the semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary of the Declaration of Independence coming up next July. Steve went with four short books: Edmund Morgan's classic Birth of the Republic, 1763-1789; Martin Diamond's The Founding of the Democratic Republic (hard to find alas); Gordon Wood's The American Revolution: A History (which is both much shorter and better than his famous Creation of the American Republic); and Larry Arnn's The Founders' Key: The Divine and Natural Connection Between the Declaration and the Constitution and What We Risk by Losing It. Lucretia offered up her oral history of how the founding ought to be understood and more importantly taught to students, before settling on a challenging new book. Edward Erler's Prophetic Statesmanship: Harry Jaffa, Abraham Lincoln, and the Gettysburg Address, which doesn't sound like it's about the American Founding, but actually is. And we had a few other stray books to include, which is likely more than our questioner wanted. In any case, much more to come as we draw near to the 250th July 4 next year.
