No Way Home Episode 58: Show Notes. Planning the trips are getting harder and harder. The way home often becomes more challenging, with many more constraining factors. This episode we're unpacking why. We begin with our examples of going on trips without planning the route home before exploring the limiting factors that make the trip home a daunting prospect. We throw some tangents in along the way including a discussion of Fifth Freedom Flights, the current state of airline alliances, the merits of flying non-premium over the Atlantic, and why “unicorn” destinations are harder to visit now than ever before. We also look inward to see how our miles and points behavior limits our choices, how procrastination paralysis leads to incomplete bookings, why alternative routes home when flying may not be an answer, and TK's troubling cruise moment when looking for a way back home. We end with an oddity that Tom has latched onto and how this may affect your September travel plans, and we discuss why a lack of airport arrival lounges compounds the woes of traveling home. Key Points From This Episode: [00:00] Our conclusion: Planning the trip home is much harder than it should be. [01:30] Examples of our partial trip syndrome – travelling without a way back home. [04:01] Limiting factors: Analysis paralysis, and more reasons why going home is harder. [08:35] Unpacking Freedom Flights and why we'll dedicate an entire episode to these. [11:06] Why the world, in all its expanse, is still widely unattainable for travel. [12:29] The current state of airline alliances, and the airlines we'd like to try for the first time. [18:09] Revisiting the merits of flying economy on transatlantic flights. [19:23] Why it's becoming even more difficult to visit “unicorn” destinations. [22:02] How our miles and points experience makes it harder to make decisions. [23:40] Procrastination paralysis, our upcoming trip to Spain, and incomplete bookings. [27:39] How pushing hard for the exact travel experience you want limits your other options. [29:32] What to do when you're stuck; exploring alternatives to finding your way home. [31:08] How TK was almost thwarted from a cruise back home. [37:52] An oddity TK has picked up on, and what this means for September travel. [44:30] The role of airport lounges in making decisions about going home. Quotes: “This has been an unspoken rule, where we're always seeming to have a lot more difficulty figuring out how we're getting home than how we get there.” — @TktweetsKim [01:16] “The world is our oyster, but it's really not when you think about it. South America is almost unattainable at this time.” — @tmount [11:08] “It's possible to fly non-premium over the Atlantic.” — @TktweetsKim [19:04] “On your way home, you want that experience. You really want that enjoyment to continue. That's why I prefer not to fly economy over the Atlantic because I feel like the flight home is an extension of the vacation.” — @tmount [21:31] “A guy can dream. If we don't dream, then we have nothing to aspire to.” — @tmount [24:39] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Lufthansa Delta One® Ethiopian Airlines Air India Etihad Copa Airlines Star Alliance oneworld SkyTeam LATAM Airlines Alaska Airlines Lufthansa Group airBaltic LOT Polish Airlines ITA Airways Virgin Atlantic Eurowings Edelweiss Episode 57: Travel Banter with Michael Trager Liberia Expo 2025 Osaka JetBlue PLAY Airlines Icelandair Straight to the Points Thrifty Traveler United Airlines The White Lotus The Milenomics Podcast Network Thomas Kim on X Trevor Mountcastle on X

Today we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Francesco Sassi for a wide-ranging discussion on global energy and geopolitics. Francesco is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oslo and previously served as a Research Fellow in energy geopolitics and markets at Ricerche Industriali ed Energetiche (RIE). Francesco holds a Ph.D. in Political Science – Geopolitics from the University of Pisa, where he focused his research on the Sino-Russian gas interdependence. We were drawn to his straightforward analysis, insightful commentary, and use of maps to bring complex dynamics to life. We were thrilled to visit with Francesco and learn from his perspective. In our conversation, we explore the rise of political risk in energy markets and the growing global interdependence of the energy system, driven by factors such as China's increasing influence in shaping energy geopolitics, new interdependencies created by energy technology, trade and manufacturing, as well as disruptions like COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. We examine Russian gas volumes to Europe, Spain's leadership in clean energy and the implications of its recent blackout, and the dual forces shaping Europe: rising cross-border interconnectivity projects alongside increasing energy nationalism. We touch on President Trump's recent visit to the Middle East, which is part of broader interest in energy and AI investment in the region, OPEC+ strategy, market share pressures, and the impact of low oil prices on Russia. Francesco shares his perspective on the potential for a Putin-Zelensky meeting, tensions between India and Pakistan, and how energy policy is becoming increasingly central to electoral platforms in Europe. We turn to Argentina's recent progress under President Milei, Israeli investment in lithium extraction technology in Argentina's lithium triangle, and how energy and mineral resources are increasingly being used as tools of foreign policy and geopolitical leverage. We close with Francisco's thoughts on the growing power of energy as a force shaping international relations and global industrial strategy. It was a dynamic and insightful conversation. Mike Bradley kicked off the discussion by noting that broader markets rallied substantially on Monday following news that China and the U.S. have agreed to a “tentative” tariff deal. Broader equity markets (S&P 500) have completely retraced their losses since Trump's April 2nd Day of Liberation and are now up slightly (+4%). Meanwhile, the S&P Volatility Index has plunged from its April 8th tariff volatility highs and is now trading near YTD lows, something to be monitored closely as any surprise event could send broader markets lower. On the bond market front, the 10yr bond yield is trading sideways even though April CPI came in lower than expected. PPI will be released on Wednesday and if it too prints lower than expected, it could provide room for the Fed to begin cutting rates at their June 18th FOMC meeting. On the crude oil front, WTI price has rebounded nicely over the past week and now trades at ~$63/bbl. Oil traders remain focused on future OPEC+ production increases and increasingly on whether U.S. E&Ps will begin altering their 2025 capex plans at these lower prices levels. He wrapped up with a look at key events this week, notably NRG Energy's acquisition of LS Power's portfolio of natural gas generation assets (~13gw for ~$12 billion). The move follows Constellation Energy's mid-January deal to acquire Calpine Corp. and demonstrates that both companies are positioning themselves for an acceleration in electricity growth this decade. Many thanks to Francesco for sharing his time and insights with us today. We hope you enjoy the discussion as much as we did! Our best to you all.
On April 15, 1912, one of the greatest disasters in modern nautical history took place. The RMS Titanic, one of the most celebrated ships of its era, struck an iceberg and sank on its inaugural voyage. While the story of the Titanic is well known, it has been exaggerated throughout the years, and there are many misconceptions about the ship and its sinking that have persisted to this day. In the early 17th century, Japan was witness to a samurai who was arguably its greatest warrior ever. He wasn't just one of the greatest swordsmen in history; he was a philosopher, a writer, an artist, and, in contravention to the samurai code at the time, he was a vagabond. Today, he is considered a saint of Japanese martial arts, and he has been portrayed in Japanese movies and books. Almost 3000 years ago, the Ancient Greeks established what was a unique method of honoring their gods: an athletic competition. Men from city states all over the Greek world would come to Mount Olympus to compete. For those crowned champion, there were few honors greater. Over the centuries, more and more competitions were added until one day, an emperor put an end to everything until its modern revival. Cruise ships might look all shiny and glamorous, but there are hidden parts you'll never see unless you know where to look. Beneath the fancy restaurants and pools, there are whole maze-like areas just for crew members. Some ships even have secret morgues and jails tucked away in the lower decks. There are also hidden maintenance tunnels, storage rooms, and places where broken furniture and supplies get stashed. It's basically like a whole secret city operating underneath the vacation fun. Next time you're on a cruise, just remember — there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than you realize!

Located on the Adriatic Sea in the southernmost part of Croatia is the city of Dubrovnik. Founded in the 7th century, it rose in prominence and became one of the leading city-states in Europe. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Robert Parker, a man widely considered the most powerful critic of any genre in history, about changing careers to pursue a passion. Pulitzer-prize winning media critic David Shaw, in his two-part Front Page profile for the Los Angeles Times, called wine critic Robert Parker “the most powerful critic of any kind, anywhere.” Parker's impact on the wine world has been unrivaled, and many others agree that no critic of any genre, be it theatre, movies, music, art or fashion, has been as influential in their industry as Robert Parker has been in wine. Internationally acclaimed and recognized, Parker is the only wine critic ever awarded France's highest Presidential honor, which he received twice, from France's Presidents Chirac and Mitterrand. Robert was the first critic given Italy's top honor by Italy's President Berlusconi. He was also the first critic given Spain's highest civilian honor by King Juan Carlos. Even though his influence is global, being hounded by paparazzi when he'd visit places like Japan, Robert Parker is an American writer who has had an enormous impact on America's interest in and fascination with wine, and many say he's been a major influence on how wine tastes and is made today. New Tech Alert: A speedy all-road bike with all the tire clearance, an unreleased (and still embargoed) gravel bike, and a clever gravel suspension fork from DT Swiss make this a gear-focused show. Senior Tech Editor Alvin Holbrook chats with Levy about riding Cannondale's completely redesigned Synapse that offers massive tire clearance, a best-in-class storage box, and integrated lighting that (might) finally make sense. Further, he explains how one battery powers all of it and the AXS derailleur. The price? $16,499. He's also spent some time on a new gravel suspension fork from DT Swiss that features integrated brake hose routing and aero-ish shaping, and even got to use one while racing a very wet Traka 100 in Spain just a few days ago. 5.9.25 Hour 2 1:00- We're hearing that the Commanders MIGHT be playing against the Dolphins in Spain next November. 31:00- How are you Winning off the Field? Grant & Danny's Friday show staple kicks off another installment.
It's Friday, May 9th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Second anniversary of brutal violence in India Christians of Manipur State, India marked the second anniversary of the brutal ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, reports International Christian Concern. Shockingly, 258 people were killed, 1,000 injured, and 60,000 people were displaced. Plus, 4,786 houses were burnt and 386 religious structures were vandalized, including temples and churches. India is the 11th most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Cardinals selected first American Pope On the fourth vote, the College of Cardinals, referred to as the Papal Conclave, chose the first-ever American Pope. Robert Prevost has taken the name of Pope Leo XIV, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Born in Chicago, educated at Villanova University, and a missionary to Peru, Prevost selected the name Leo for a reason. On ABC News, Catholic Pastor James Martin said this. MARTIN: “Historically, it's a name that would signal his alignment with workers, labor, and the poor.” Catholics claim that Peter, the fisherman disciple of Jesus, was the first pope. In fact, Scripture does not teach that Peter was in authority over the other apostles at all or over the church. Indeed, Ephesians 2:19 says, “So then, you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” Catholics also claim that the pope is infallible when he acts or speaks as Christ's representative on Earth. That assertion is not Scripturally supported either. Pope critical of Trump/Vance, pushed COVID vaccine, & removed conservative bishops In terms of positions on the issues, Prevost has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's administration and has consistently used his X account to promote material hostile to Trump's immigration policies. In one instance from February 3, Prevost reposted an article by the National Catholic Reporter entitled “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others.” The article criticizes the U.S. vice president for correctly arguing that we owe more immediate responsibility to our own family members and country than to those overseas – a position taught by St. Thomas Aquinas – and reiterated in the “social encyclicals” of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century popes. As head of the Congregation for Bishops, Prevost was instrumental in the removal of conservative Bishop Joseph Strickland in 2023 from Tyler, Texas, and the removal of the leading French conservative bishop, Dominique Rey, from his diocese of Fréjus-Toulon. Prevost also reposted a call for the abortion-tainted COVID-19 vaccines to be “available for all” and a United States Conference of Catholic Bishops post that called getting vaccinated “an act of love.” In 2012, a year before the election of Pope Francis, Cardinal Prevost expressed disappointment that some Western media held “sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the Gospel,” in particular, the “homosexual lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.” Trump's trade deal with U.K. nets U.S. $5 billion opportunity On Thursday, President Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced they had reached a trade agreement that lifted some — but not all — U.S. tariffs on British goods, reports National Public Radio. Trump said it would give U.S. companies better market access for beef, ethanol, other farm products, chemicals, machinery, and industrial products — new opportunities his administration said were worth $5 billion. 2nd largest automaker making splash in America Speaking of the positive impact of Trump's tariffs, Volkswagen Group, the second largest automaker in the world in 2024, is preparing to join the growing list of automakers looking to re-equip its US factories in response to the tariffs, reports The Daily Mail. The German automaker's luxury brand, Audi — which assembles most of its lineup in its home country, Hungary, Mexico, Slovakia, Spain, and China — is planning to make some of its crossover and SUV models now in America. ‘Frasier' star Kelsey Grammer regrets ex-girlfriend's abortion Frasier star Kelsey Grammer opened up about his profound regret over his ex-girlfriend's abortion in his newly released memoir, reports People Magazine. This tragedy closely preceded another in the actor's life: the 1975 rape and murder of his younger sister, which is the main subject of his memoir Karen: A Brother Remembers. In his new book, Grammer wrote, “I know that many people do not have a problem with abortion, and though I have supported it in the past, the abortion of my son eats away at my soul.” Just months before his sister's death, he explains that his then-girlfriend became pregnant and decided to abort their baby. While he said he was “willing” to keep the baby, he “did not plead with her to save his life.” Grammer admits he “volunteered to have my son's body vacuumed out of his mother's.” As Live Action reports, abortionists use “vacuums 10-20 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner to tear (babies) apart alive.” Grammer added, “I regret it.” Despite his harrowing regret over his own son's death by abortion, the TV star ironically says he still believes abortion should be legal. Proverbs 31:8 says, “Open your mouth for the voiceless.” Over 7,750 baptized in largest single-day baptism in US history And finally, on Saturday, 7,750 people were baptized in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Huntington Beach, California, an event organizers say marked the largest single-day baptism in American history, reports The Christian Post. Hosted by Oceans Church and led by Pastor Mark Francey, the event dubbed "Baptize California" drew approximately 30,000 attendees from more than 300 churches across the Golden State. Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Third Week of Easter Lectionary: 277The Saint of the day is Saint John of AvilaSaint John of Avila's Story Born in the Castile region of Spain, John was sent at the age of 14 to the University of Salamanca to study law. He later moved to Alcala, where he studied philosophy and theology before his ordination as a diocesan priest. After John's parents died and left him as their sole heir to a considerable fortune, he distributed his money to the poor. In 1527, he traveled to Seville, hoping to become a missionary in Mexico. The archbishop of that city persuaded him to stay and spread the faith in Andalusia. During nine years of work there, he developed a reputation as an engaging preacher, a perceptive spiritual director, and a wise confessor. Because John was not afraid to denounce vice in high places, he was investigated by the Inquisition but was cleared in 1533. He later worked in Cordoba and then in Granada, where he organized the University of Baeza, the first of several colleges run by diocesan priests who dedicated themselves to teaching and giving spiritual direction to young people. He was friends with Saints Francis Borgia, Ignatius of Loyola, John of God, John of the Cross, Peter of Alcantara, and Teresa of Avila. John of Avila worked closely with members of the Society of Jesus and helped their growth within Spain and its colonies. John's mystical writings have been translated into several languages. He was beatified in 1894, canonized in 1970, and declared a doctor of the Church on October 7, 2012. St. John of Avila’s liturgical feast is celebrated on May 10. Reflection Saint John of Avila knew that the lives of Christians can contradict the Good News of Jesus Christ—for example thinking racism is OK—implicitly encouraging Christians to live their faith-halfheartedly, and causing obstacles to non-Christians who might accept Baptism. In 16th-century Spain, those who advocated reforming the Church were often suspected of heresy. Saint John of Avila held his ground and was eventually recognized as a very reliable teacher of the Christian faith. “Gold and dollars would have saved you definitely,” says IE Business School professor Daniel Lacalle, referring to the widespread power outage in Spain that also crippled communications and access to water recently. In today's interview, he tells Daniela Cambone that in a crisis like that, electronic fiat money doesn't work. “You go to a store and you have to use this gold ring and you get food. That's for sure.” He also points out that the blackout was caused by politically driven energy policies that overly rely on volatile renewable sources without sufficient backup from stable power sources like nuclear and hydro. “The ideology of energy makes no sense… renewables are left-wing and nuclear is right-wing? That makes no sense.” Additionally, he argues that the attack on cash reflects the elite's effort to tighten social control, referring to a promotional video from the ECB that touted the digital euro's viability even without electricity or internet. Watch the video to learn how you can better prepare for situations like this one. Key Facts: Prof. Lacalle shares behind-the-scenes chaos during Spain's blackout. Why could Spain's massive blackout have been prevented? How can gold and dollars come to the rescue during blackout situations? The ECB's master plan to introduce a digital euro.Could a massive blackout happen in the U.S. too?
Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. It could be one of the most lucrative matches in the history of the game in the Europa League final as Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur with a Champions League spot on the line. The winner could earn over $130 million by being in next season's Champions League. For Spurs, it could mean Ange Postecoglu stays in his job as manager. For Ruben Amorim and Manchester United, it could mean they can go out in the transfer market and spend a bit while hopefully not having to lay anyone else off. In Spain on Sunday, the Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid could either essentially decide the title for Barca or open the door wide open against for Madrid to come back in the final three weeks of the season. The remaining schedule definitely favors Madrid, and a win would put them only one point behind Barcelona. In Portugal, if there is a winner between the eternal rivals Benfica and Sporting, that team will have the head-to-head tiebreaker in the league standings with one round of matches to go. Both teams are currently tied on points. A draw would make the final weekend very interesting with lots of scoreboard watching. In MLS this weekend, the big game is in Chester as 2nd-place Philadelphia hosts Eastern Conference leaders Columbus. Charlotte goes to Nashville, Austin goes to Cincinnati, and Miami travels to Minnesota. Sunday Night Soccer is a great one with Supporters' Shield leaders Vancouver hosting LAFC.We'll get the weekend started at Soldier Field as Atlanta United faces the Chicago Fire. Pregame coverage starts at 1:30 on 92.9 The Game with Abe Gordon and Madison Crews, Mike Conti and I will take over ahead of a 2:40pm kickoff. In girls high school soccer semifinals last night, we had both 3A semifinals on the SDH Network as Jefferson and Oconee County booked their spots in next week's final. Buford and Roswell have a chance to finish unbeaten as they advanced to their respective finals next week. Boys' high school semifinals tonight all over the state of Georgia before next week's championship game at three different sites.

Mark Adamczyk emailed from Akron, Ohio: "Mark, Just wanted to reach out to you about the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I found you on Sirius XM last year (March 2024) while recovering from back surgery (herniated a disc last February. 220 V down the left leg - that was a TON of fun!!) Hearing you mention recovering from hip replacement surgery the other week made me feel a certain kinship with you around the podcast. About 3 weeks after surgery, my wife and I received an invitation to travel to Ireland with our kid's high school band for them to play in the Dublin St Patrick's Day parade. (Our kids have graduated but I still cover the sports as team physician!) Having made enough of a recovery to do the walking needed, we made the trip and had an absolute BLAST touring Southern Ireland (Dublin, Kilkenny, Blarney, Killarney [my favorite!!], Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Mohr). When I got back to the States, I started looking around for ways to listen to Celtic music as we thoroughly enjoyed listening to it while on vacation. I then found your podcast and have been listening somewhat regularly since. (Summertime tends toward country music for me. But when the weather gets colder, especially after the holidays, I find myself looking for you again! I also catch up a bit sitting outside on a weekend morning on our back patio at other times when I get the chance!) We also got a new dog soon after coming home and named him Guinness in honor of the trip! (We also thought he reminded us a bit of a pint of the brew with his white accents! Check out his collar!) When I take him on his daily walks, you are a regular on our playlist! Me walking my Irish dog and listening to the I&CMP while recovering from back surgery - beautiful!!! Thanks for helping with my recovery! Hope you are doing well with yours and look forward to continuing to listen more over time. I attached a few pics for you too - some from Ireland in places which I'm sure you will recognize and one of Guinness and I on our latest walk today!! Slainte!!!”

They are contained in almost every processed food and a great many foods prepared at home and in restaurants. Ravensburg, and you are very much forgiven if you cannot place it on the map, is today a town of 50,000 in the far south eastern corner of Baden-Württemberg between Friedrichshafen, home of the Zeppelins, and the city of Ulm and its majestic church tower. If you have heard of it, it may be because of Ravensburger, the publisher of puzzles and boardgames, but you would not have associated it with any great mercantile or commercial activity.Nevertheless, in the 15th century it housed the headquarters of a company that held a near monopoly in the trade between Spain and the empire and in certain wares, namely linen and a special cloth variously called barchent, bombast or fustian. Before we get into Ravensburger and the Grosse Handelsgesellschaft, we need to put the whole region into the context of the free imperial cities of the 15th century.Trading routes of the HABW_11_03_Ravensburger_Handelsgesellschaft.jpg (4957×3535)The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. In the year 732, one of the most important battles in world history took place between the cities of Tours and Portier in France. On one side was an unstoppable juggernaut that had amassed one of the largest empires in world history in less than a century. On the other side was a vastly outnumbered force that lacked the primary weapon of the era, heavy cavalry. The outcome of that battle can still be seen in the world today.
