A Robinson hydrogen helicopter, Boeing machinists' new contract, furloughed Boeing staff and impending layoffs, Jeppesen possibly for sale, incendiary devices at DHL, Boom Supersonic XB-1 test flight, shots fired at Spirit, and air tanker minimum drop height. Aviation News Unither Bioelectronics Signs Agreement with Robinson Helicopter Company Unither Bioelectronics Inc. (UB) and Robinson Helicopter Company have entered into a strategic collaboration agreement to accelerate UB's development and certification of hydrogen-powered helicopters based on Robinson R44 and R66 models. UB is a subsidiary of United Therapeutics Corporation and CEO Martine Rothblatt said “...we look forward to using protons from green hydrogen to drive the membrane-based fuel cell powerplants in our Robinson R66 organ delivery electric helicopters.” Robinson R66 (Courtesy Robinson Helicopter Company) United Therapeutics adds hydrogen to its electric helicopter plans United Therapeutics is a biotechnology company that says it has been working on a hydrogen-powered R44 prototype for about a year and a half, and its first hover is “hopefully imminent.” In 2016, United Therapeutics began developing a battery-electric-powered Robinson R44 through a partnership with Tier 1 Engineering. A Guinness World Record was set in 2018 for the farthest distance traveled by an electric helicopter—30 nautical miles. UT also has partnerships with eVTOL developers EHang and Beta Technologies. Boeing strike ends as workers accept new contract The Machinists Union members accepted the contract with Boeing. Workers will get pay rises over four years. The union had demanded a 40% wage increase and restoration of a defined-benefit pension. The 38% wage increase plus a $12,000 bonus amounted to a 40% increase. The new contract does not restore the pension but promises that the next Boeing airplane will be built in the Seattle area. According to some analysts, the strike cost Boeing around $100 million a day in lost revenue. Boeing to repay furloughed staff, proceed with job cuts During the strike, Boeing furloughed some salaried employees, but CEO Kelly Ortberg said they would be repaid for lost wages. At the same time, Ortberg said a 10% cutback of the global workforce would proceed. A Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) spokesperson said it was informed that 60-day notices of job losses would be issued to its members on Nov. 15, 2024. SPEEA has reached a tentative agreement with Spirit AeroSystems on a new four-year contract that offers at least a 19% pay increase over four years. It includes provisions for greater increases if needed to keep up with labor market conditions, and a guaranteed minimum 5% bonus in the spring of 2025. Report Says Boeing Eyeing Sale Of Jeppesen As Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg looks to sell off non-core assets, Bloomberg quotes unnamed sources as saying Jeppesen is a candidate. Jeppesen is the world's largest provider of aviation charts and air navigation materials. Boeing may be looking to get $6 billion for the company. Boeing paid bought Jeppesen in 2000 for $1.5 billion. Boeing also owns ForeFlight but the Bloomberg report does not mention that company, Russia Suspected of Plotting to Send Incendiary Devices on U.S. Bound Planes Electric massagers that held a magnesium-based flammable substance were shipped via DHL from Lithuania and ignited at DHL logistics hubs in Germany and England. Boeing has reported a staggering $6.2 billion loss for the third quarter, as it grapples with its ongoing financial, safety, and reputational problems. New CEO Kelly Ortberg said the American aerospace giant is at a "crossroads", as he seeks to turn the page on years of crises. Aviation expert Anita Mendiratta tells FRANCE 24 that Ortberg faces an uphill battle: "What has been very reassuring is that he's owning the opportunity to really take the Boeing company, brand, and the industry into a stronger future."
Episode Notes Anthropic, a generative AI startup, has unveiled new tech that indicates how an AI-powered travel agent would look, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes. Anthropic recently released three demonstrations of the tech, one of which was for making travel plans. A more advanced version of the tech could eliminate the friction of manually navigating options, comparing prices and making reservations. In addition, Dawes notes users might bypass online travel agencies like Booking.com to rely on AI to find the best deals on their behalf. Hilton reported a record for room growth during the third quarter. But the company trimmed its annual room revenue forecast amid signs of softening domestic travel demand, writes Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Hilton said on Wednesday it added 6,000 rooms to its portfolio in the third quarter — the highest quarterly room addition in its history. The company also opened 531 hotels during the same timeframe. However, Hilton also said it now expects its revenue per available room to grow between 2% and 2.5% this year, a slight decrease from its projections in both April and August. Finally, Boeing has had a rough year thus far, and its struggles include a reported $6 billion third-quarter loss, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg acknowledged the planemaker is at a crossroads, adding that trust in the company has eroded. Ortberg said he believes the company's issues, including lapses in its performance, have disappointed many of its customers. He told staff earlier this month that Boeing would delay the first deliveries of the 777X to 2026. For more travel stories and deep dives into the latest trends, head to skift.com.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He leads a team that works with clients worldwide to acquire, process, and analyze high-resolution lidar and imaging data to create digital twins for various industries and applications. The team uses leading-edge technologies and sensors to capture and visualize data. The digital twins created by NV5 are virtual representations of physical objects, processes, or systems that can be used for real-time monitoring, analysis, and simulation. Digital twins can have applications for many industries, including aviation, energy, education, manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and transportation. Organizations can also use them for training and emergency planning and response. Ron describes how geospatially correct digital twins are created using LiDAR, optical, and other sensors, typically with helicopters or drones, and sometimes with fixed-wing aircraft. We learn how multiple sensor data is combined for the digital twins and the requirement for precise piloting. Ron also illustrates aviation applications for digital twins by explaining some of the airport projects undertaken by NV5. These applications include obstruction analysis, real-time monitoring of ground traffic, and operations simulation. Ron has more than 10 years of experience in lidar and imaging. He founded GEO1, a company that specialized in electric utility, oil and gas, archaeology, and coastal and highway corridor acquisition projects. GEO1 was acquired by NV5 Geospatial in June 2022 and has expanded in scope to include virtual reality, virtual production, and digital twin creation. Ron got his start in aerial cinematography. He worked with USA Today and National Geographic on projects that won a Pulitzer Prize and several EMMY awards and traveled to remote and challenging locations, such as Patagonia, the Arctic Circle, Mt. Everest, Colombia, and Hawaii, to collect and document data that can help preserve and protect natural and cultural heritage. He steered the company's integration with United Technologies which then became RTX after merging with Raytheon. Ortberg served on the RTX Board of Directors and is the former Chair of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) Board of Governors. U.S. appeals court blocks airline fee disclosure rule The U.S. Transportation Department's new rule requiring airlines and ticket agents to disclose service fees along with airfare has been temporarily blocked by a U.S. appeals court. The industry asked the court for a temporary block and the three-judge panel said the rule "likely exceeds DOT's authority and will irreparably harm airlines." The suit was brought by United, American, Delta, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Airlines for America, and the International Air Transport Association.

The report highlights inhumane treatment, including extreme physical abuse, prolonged blindfolding, and deprivation of basic needs. Disturbing accounts also reveal the use of attack dogs, electric shocks, and sexual violence against detainees. OHCHR criticises the lack of legal justification for many detentions and the denial of access to legal representation for detainees. *) Netanyahu says ready for 'every scenario' after murdering Haniyeh in Iran Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared his country is ready for any scenario after assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. He stated that recent operations targeted Hamas' and Hezbollah's senior figures, emphasising Israel's readiness for future threats. *) Algeria, China, Russia blast Israel at UNSC over Haniyeh assassination The UN Security Council condemned the Israeli assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. China and Algeria denounced the attack, calling it a violation of international law. Russia warned the incident could provoke widespread conflict in the Middle East. Separately, Türkiye strongly condemned the assassination, with top Turkish diplomat Hakan Fidan saying that Israel has also killed peace. *) Boeing appoints veteran new CEO amid company turmoil Boeing appointed Robert "Kelly" Ortberg as its new CEO, following David Calhoun's retirement.

In this episode the C.O.D.E. Crew begin a discussion on the rapid return to crazy in the world right now. The pace of life has ramped back up, some even seem to be trying to make up for lost time, and the world is going to demand that we jump on the wheel and run with them. We have exaggerated ideas about our capabilities. We like to think we can do it all. But no matter how disciplined you are or how hard you try, without a ‘sane estimate of your capabilities', you're setting yourself up to fail. John Ortberg says: ‘Willpower is…finite…You don't get separate stockpiles for different areas…That's why a long list of New Year's resolutions is almost certainly doomed…It takes a whole lot of willpower to get on an exercise…programme to lose weight…If you add on the list: get on a budget…keep your office clean, and read Calvin's Institutes every week, you set yourself up for failure…For most of us…our wills get depleted…more quickly than our bodies.' Ortberg suggests these: 1) Schedule your most important tasks for when your willpower is strongest. For many people, that's the morning. One study shows prisoners have a better shot at parole if their case is heard in the morning when the judge has a higher reserve of willpower and is more inclined to take a chance. 2) Spend willpower wisely by not taking on too many tasks at once, even after you have prayed about them. Generally, God works through your will, and He seldom gives you a free pass to disregard the laws of finitude He created. 3) Set goals – but not too many. Lacking a few, we drift, but having an overabundance means we worry about them, accomplish less, and suffer emotionally and physically. 4) Remember that the one act of your will that replenishes willpower instead of depleting it is surrender. God meant for prayer, solitude, worship, and meditation to be done in a way that restores us.

Please welcome John Mark Comer to the Thriving Beyond Belief podcast this week talking about our world of HURRY and how we can eliminate it!! Our worst moments tend to happen when we are in a hurry—late for an appointment, behind on our to-do list, cramming too much in our day. It occurs when we’re trying constantly to do more, creating a bone-deep tiredness not just in our minds or bodies but deep in our souls. In short, hurry doesn’t just make us weary. It is the great enemy of our spiritual life. Author and pastor John Mark Comer proposes that the solution to being fully present to God, others, and our own hearts is found simply by following the unhurried way of Jesus. He explains, “Jesus invites all of us to take up the ‘easy’ yoke. He has—on offer to all—an easy way to shoulder the weight of life with his triumvirate of love, joy, and peace.” Comer’s journey to discovering the life-changing remedy of slowing down began while he was pastoring a successful megachurch with six services each Sunday, a marathon lifestyle which left him feeling burnt out and detached from those around him. In a moment of desperation, he asked his mentor, John Ortberg, for advice. The response he received was the same as what philosopher and Christian spiritual formation teacher Dallas Willard had given to Ortberg years before: “You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. There is nothing else.” As Comer put this simple truth into practice in his own life, he experienced radical renewal in his mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being. The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry describes his transformation and offers hope amidst the toxicity in our fast-paced, modern world. In a casual, conversational tone, he presents a poignant message: “This is an invitation—for all the tired, the burned out, the stressed, all those stuck in traffic and behind on their to-do list….If you want to experience the life of Jesus, you have to adopt the lifestyle of Jesus.” John Mark Comer lives, works, and writes in the urban core of Portland, Oregon. He is the pastor for teaching and vision at Bridgetown Church. Prior to that, he was lead pastor of a suburban megachurch. He has a master’s degree from Western Seminary and is the author of Loveology, Garden City, and God Has a Name. John Mark lives in Portland with his wife, Tammy, and their three children.

4 goals that deaden souls: 1. Holiness 2. Service 3. Wholeness 4. Enlightenment Our Primary Goal is Love (Matthew 22:34-40) “Love is the essence of our relationship with God and its goal. From a biblical perspective, a loving relationship with God produces the fruits of holiness, service, and wholeness.” Ashbrook First Half of the Christian Life: We pursue a life of love by leaning into our longings. Stage One – Awakening [Eph. 2:1-10; 1 Cor. 3:1-3] Redeemed from a pointless life to a purpose in life. “God, I believe in you!” Stage Two – Purgation [Gal. 5:16-25; Eph. 6:10-18] Releasing disordered desires to feast on deeper desires. “God, I belong to you!” “God doesn’t hate sin because he’s anti-pleasure. He invented pleasure. He hates sin because it promises so much and offers so little.” John Ortberg “We often blame God or ourselves, when much of the turmoil in our heads is caused by the devil’s harassment.” Ashbrook Second Half of the Christian Life: We pursue a life of love by leaning into our limitations. Stage Three – Illumination [Eph. 4:1-3; Phil. 2:12-16] Redeemed from an impressive life to an empowering life. “God, I’m working for you!” Dark Night of the Soul [Psalm 51; Habakkuk] A wall that works through your wounds and wickedness. “God, where are you?” “We underestimate the depth of our dependence on this world, our distrust of God’s goodness, and the brokenness of our human nature. God sees it all but loves us too much to let us remain there.” Ashbrook Stage Four – Union [John 15-17; Phil. 3:7-11] Releasing what’s interesting to feast on what’s integrating. “God, I long to be with you!” RECOMMENDED RESOURCES: Mansions of the Heart by R. The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry Please welcome John Mark Comer to the Thriving Beyond Belief podcast this week talking about our world of HURRY and how we can eliminate it!! This last Wednesday was Penny's birthday. We both had a day off and went out for a nice long stroll at the Dunstable Downs (plus cake!). We parked and began our walk near something called the "Tree Cathedral (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/features/whipsnade-tree-cathedral-awarded-grade-ii-listing) ". Here is the description from the National trust website: "Whipsnade Tree Cathedral was the vision of Edmund Blyth, who served in the infantry in World War I and suffered the loss of dear friends Arthur Bailey and John Bennett, who died in the March retreat of 1918. Edmund wanted to create a lasting legacy for his comrades-in-arms who were no longer with him and so began the idea of a unique First World War commemoration. Situated on the edge of Whipsnade Village green, the Tree Cathedral is composed of different varieties of trees and shrubs laid out to the plan of a cathedral, with a nave, transepts, chancel, cloisters and chapels. The idea of a Cathedral constructed with trees and plants is original and it's one of Bedfordshire's unique hidden gems." I've been there many times for special extended prayers. On this occasion, Penny and I sat on a bench in the 'nave' of the cathedral and prayed for a while thanking God for another year together and the beauty of nature all around us. Edmund Blyth had the vision to construct this 'cathedral' out of trees, hedges and shrubs. It is beautiful, and a fitting memorial to his friends. But we don't need something manufactured to catch a vision of the goodness of God. We just need to open our eyes to his goodness all around us. Genesis reminds us that God is all about making what is good: “The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:12 NIV11) Has this been a "good" week for you? I think it has. Perhaps it's been difficult, even tragic. But, God is working something good in our lives if we could only but see it. Occasionally the darkness, the mist, the confusion hides God's purposes for us for a time. But, he is all about what is good, and can only do what is good for us - and we will see it as such eventually. What's important is that we hold onto a vision of God as good, even when it doesn't feel like it or look like it. This week I read a challenging and inspiring small book. Here's a quote from it: "The vision that really matters is the vision of how good God is and how blessed I am to be his child. This vision, of an already existing reality, sees the goodness and competence of God. Then out of the goodness of that vision grows a desire to do something for God, to make his kingdom real.... All human work is meant to be rooted in what God is doing....The only safe way to lead a team is to be rooted in this God vision. It's not a vision of what might happen someday. It's a vision of what already is. It's a vision of God and the goodness of God. If I can live in that vision, then I will seek to do good things with God, and I won't be clutching onto outcomes in a life-or-death manner." Ortberg, John. Overcoming Your Shadow Mission (Leadership Library) (pp. 91-93). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. One of the reasons we engage in the spiritual disciplines, including prayer and reading God's word, is to help us hold onto the conviction of God's goodness in the present, not just the hereafter. The joy is not only in knowing where we're going, but in knowing that we have a companion on the journey. And that companion is our great God who only has the best in mind for us. I wish you a wonderful week of walking in God's goodness. God bless, Malcolm Please add your comments on this week’s topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Opening up the parable of talents we think about all that God has entrusted us with and what we do with it as we consider "Are we ready to meet our Lord" and "are we ready to serve him in this place"? "Your boat is whatever represents safety and security to you apart from God himself. Your boat is whatever you are tempted to put your trust in, especially when life gets a little stormy. Your boat is whatever keeps you so comfortable that you don't want to give it up even if it's keeping you from joining Jesus on the waves. Your boat is whatever pulls you away from the high adventure of extreme discipleship." (Ortberg. J. 2001. If you want to walk on water you've got to get out of the boat).

Not Built in a Day – Romans 7:14-25: I like books. They've become great companions for me along the journey. In my office library, I have one shelf that holds my very favorite books. Included on that shelf are several by John Ortberg. Probably my favorite Ortberg book is entitled, "The Life You've Always Wanted." It's a fantastic read but it's the title I love most. Most of us have a pretty clear picture of the life we want ... but we're not always quite as sure how to attain it. We're left with the great dilemma Paul speaks of in Romans 7: "the things I don't want to do - those are the things I do and the things I do want to do - they're the ones I'm not doing!" It's a reality that shows up in all of our lives some of the time and for some of us, it shows up almost all the time. This weekend we'll consider this internal battle that we all face along the way. We'll also hear from a remarkable young man named Adam who has faced this battle but found amazing grace in Jesus. His story is incredibly compelling ... your life will be blessed by reflecting upon it! I hope you can be here and if you are away, take a look at our livestream at Foothillsalliance.com. Much love and grace to you in the journey as we pursue together the life we've always wanted!
