Welcome back, Wolf Pack, to another Positive Cinematic Spotlight! As Halloween gets closer and closer, we continue to look at horror movies for positive ideas and encouraging thoughts. This week we look at another Stanley Kubrik film, this time from 1980: The Shining. Stanley Kubrik's The Shining is based on Stephen King's 1977 novel of the same name, his first hardback bestseller. While King was disappointed in the film for its handling of the themes King intended and the movie's interpretation of the character of Wendy Torrence, Kubrik's movie is considered one of the best horror films ever made. In the movie, Jack is a former teacher, alcoholic, and struggling writer looking for a change of scenery and solitude to write a novel. He gets an opportunity to caretake for the Overlook Hotel, an isolated mountain hotel in Colorado which shuts down during the winter months. While he and his family, wife Wendy and son Danny stay there, the hotel is soon discovered to be haunted and negatively affecting Jack. In the original novel, a major theme is about how actions have lasting effects, as Jack was an abused child, and as a father, while trying to control it, Jack had been abusive to Danny. Similarly, the hotel had been a scene of several episodes of violence, each leaving its mark or aura on the Overlook Hotel and making it a malevolent force encouraging Jack to continue the cycle of violence. The movie leaves out Jack's backstory and much of the Overlook's history, minimizing that theme. What we have in its place, however, is a theme of a protagonist, Jack Torrence, who abuses himself with alcohol, overwork, and stress, leading him to become sleep deprived, uncommunicative, and abusive to his family. The Overlook Hotel is clearly prodding Jack's negative thoughts, but there's an impression that if Jack didn't isolate himself physically and emotionally, under the guise of working on his novel, and spent more time with his family, things may have turned out differently. If only he had taken care of himself physically and emotionally.Similarly, we, in the field of education, need to watch out for overworking ourselves, isolating ourselves, and mounting stress upon ourselves. Many of us find ourselves adapting to the new education format, and in doing so are spending more time learning new technology tools and methods to teach, and converting lessons we've used in the past into virtual formats. Some districts have teachers juggling both virtual and traditional classes. We are stressing about our students' educational progress, keeping up with deadlines, and, in reality, nothing new from last year or the year before, except… the increased technology demands, but that's enough to put us at risk of overworking ourselves, overstressing, and isolating ourselves to maintain focus and get our work up to date. But we need to avoid this.Don't neglect yourself, don't neglect your sleep, your friends and family, don't neglect your health. These stresses can, and will, have a negative effect on your attitude and enthusiasm for the job and your interactions with students. It won't be as extreme as Jack Torrence's reaction, but we will become less patient and less available for our students who need us compassionate and observant. And as the novel shows us, negativity breeds negativity, but we can also extrapolate that positivity breeds positivity. Tending to our own needs makes it easier to tend to the needs of others, and being positive and supportive of our students leads to a more positive teaching environment with fewer disciplinary troubles. So, what have you done for yourself? Gotten the recommended 8 hours of sleep? Maintained a regular eating schedule? Taken time off from all stresses to enjoy your favored pastime? Be sure to do so. You'll be happier, you'll be a more effective teacher, and your students will benefit. Thank you for all that you do, thank you for being the best, thank you for taking care of yourself, and thank you for

Welcome back, Wolf Pack, to another Positive Cinematic Spotlight! Last week, we looked at Samwise's support of Frodo as he tries to destroy the key to Sauron, the evil all-seeing eye from taking over Middle Earth in the Fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings.” This week, we are looking at another evil eye, this time from the future; HAL-9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2001 is a movie that addresses many themes and concepts, but one of the most memorable segments of the movie deals with the artificial intelligence, HAL-9000. Through HAL-9000, director Stanley Kubrik and writer Arthur C. Clarke explore mankind's fear of new technology. HAL-9000 is put into the Discovery One spaceship to maintain systems, but it starts to malfunction, leading to a confrontation between HAL-9000 and the crew who can no longer trust the AI. When schools had to adapt our teaching practices due to the Coronavirus, many of us had to take on a significantly different, technology based style. We were being asked to learn many new computer programs to deliver the educational content to students through the transmitting eye of a webcam. Interestingly, I recently heard a comment and was asked a question that many echo and show a concern about education's future. I was asked recently what I thought things were going to be like for the next 2021 - 2022 school year. I also heard from another teacher that there was a feeling of defeat after virtual lessons. Both within one week told me many of us are worried about the future and are unsatisfied with virtual teaching. But one thing I know is that as much as we would rather be in the classroom face to face with a full class, parents also want the return to traditional teaching. As a father I have children who struggle virtually, but excel in person, and children who are not hindered by virtual education… except when it malfunctions… like HAL-9000. I do think virtual teaching isn't going away, but I believe after the pandemic subsides, it will be greatly reduced and used to better accommodate student needs. Imagine not having to make up days cancelled due to inclement weather, because we can put assignments online. Students assigned to detention could avoid falling behind because we have work they can do online. We can see virtual schooling for extended periods of time doesn't work for everyone, but short spans of virtuality can help students to keep up and teachers to keep moving in their curriculum. We need not fear virtual teaching, but use it as an alternative to traditional when traditional isn't an option, or virtual increases student safety. If anything, people are learning how important it is for us to be in the classroom. Before, we were expected to be here. Now we are needed to be here. Being needed gives us influence. When Dave Bowman asks HAL to let him back in Discovery One, HAL respondes, “"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that!'" But our experiences with new technology, programs, and apps can now increase our ability to say, instead, “I'm glad to say I can do that,” When families and students ask for alternative solutions to accommodate their needs, But we have proven our importance both in the classroom, and in front of the webcam, and on the keyboard. It can be difficult and overwhelming trying to adjust to the increased technological needs, but we can adapt and incorporate these new tools to better reach more students. Just remember, a tool is useless without someone choosing to use it. They are here for us to use, not here to replace us. I want to thank everyone for all that you do for our students, and for being the best.

On this week's episode of Fearless Films, the guys go on holiday to the infamous Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrik's "The Shining."Pete breaks down the classic horror film, from its pioneering of Steadicam technology, to its differences from the Stephen King source material.Nerd warning: Pete may go on a rant about how the book is better (but the movie is still great).Kevin realizes that no where is safe from Stephen King, as this story does not even take place in Maine, but rather the state of Colorado. He also laughs in the face of terror, as he has been trapped in his house with his family for the better part of a year, and no one has even picked up an axe once (he did get smacked with a spatula once, however. Long story). So join us in the ballroom, grab a drink from the waiter, and always remember: don't get too scared...

Good Moron to you…yes, this is a lengthy episode, HOWEVER in this episode we finish our conversation with Cheryl Hines!  And we cover a lot of ground.  Among other things we talk about: The Kennedy rights-of-passage that she had to undergo before marrying into the Kennedy family which may or may not have included secret passageways underneath Martha’s Vinyard and Hyannis Port.   Whether Cheryl had to take a closed door blood oath before the actual marriage vows were exchanged before being indoctrinated into the Kennedy family.  Spoiler alert: I just made that up. She didn’t.   She talks a bit about the Kennedy family and how they’re a lot like most families… large families that is, and they’re a lot more laid back than we project in our minds about them.  She mentions the matriarch of the family Ethel who is RFK’s widow and 92 years old. They had eleven children together. Eleven… So, yeah… big family.   We talk about our first jobs in Los Angeles when were struggling actors.  Cheryl went on to become a star and I’m certainly no longer a struggling actor… I’m just struggling.  Thank you very much. (rimshot) And a crazy story of Cheryl having to go to a State Hospital which is the equivalent of a Stanley Kubrik film version of The Shining which happened just as the very first Curb Your Enthusiasm HBO special was airing so she was literally on the verge of having a real career and there she is in a state hospital slash looney bin. We’re Shootin’ the Sh*t with Cheryl, which is a live streaming show of hers that YOU can be a part of and I’ll tell you about at the end on the Modern Moron CLOSE So there you have it, The Modern Moron is now the official platform when Cheryl Hines wants to … um, have a platform.   Actually if you’re a superfan of Cheryl’s you can go to https://www.officialcherylhines.com/ that’s all one word, she has an online show right now Called “Shootin’ the Shit with Cheryl” and you can get some face-time with Cheryl and her guest.  It’s a weekly live streaming event. Go to the site, click RSVP and you can get a link to the show! It’s currently on zoom so there are a limited number of spaces per week.  I’ll put a link at the bottom. LA Times Staff Writer Stephen Battaglio asked how the 51 year-old-Iannello was able to guide CBS through the tumultuous departure of former-CEO Les Moonves. Iannello's response sounded very PIKE. “The most important thing is you have to listen and you have to be decisive in what moves you make. In the middle of all of this what I would say is, forget about what you think you know. Go around, meet the people and listen. Take a deep breath and go with your gut.” In regards to the push-and-pull of exclusivity vs. distribution, Ianniello discussed ViacomCBS' approach “I understand the tension between the two. But what I would say is we kind of have the best of both worlds where we're able to redeploy licensing dollars into more content. We want to put enough content in there to make sure we're driving subs. With “Star Trek” internationally we licensed the first series to Netflix and the second one to Amazon. A guy who was a producer at this one place that I was pitching it came up to me before the meeting and [said], ‘I gotta tell you, your character meant so much to me' ... It fits so well into this new Star Trek universe. It just fits right in there. Star Trek Online and Gaming News by Shane Hoover Upcoming Patrol User Interface Last week, on the Ten Forward weekly community live stream, Ambassador Kael and UI Artist Jo Gianulis gave players an introduction to the forthcoming Patrol UI. The new Patrol UI will be presented as a new tab on the Operations UI alongside TFO, PvP, and Private operations. Players will be able to directly launch any Patrol mission directly from this UI, regardless of their Sector Space position, and will be returned to their starting position when the mission is completed. Patrols are designed for single player action, though they'll support a full team, with no wait for queueing. Just click ‘Launch' to immediately get into the mission. The new system will come with five brand new Beta Quadrant patrols and five pre-existing Delta Quadrant patrols. More of the many existing patrols will be added quickly post-launch. The new Beta patrols are tied to the new Awakening story line surrounding the Mycelial Network and Spore colonies. And for the completists among us, new Accolades will also be introduced with the new system. Test Your Build on Tribble at Starbase 234 According to STO's recent blog, “Starbase 234 has been rebuilt from the ground up to once again serve as a training ground for Alliance starships. This improved Starbase makes extensive use of holographic technology to allow captains to engage in simulated combat in a wide variety of situations.”  What this news means for players is a built-in mission that allows them to choose their own combat challenge, specify desired difficulty, and get real-time feedback from STO's own combat parsing functionality. At least for now, the entirely new system will be available only on Tribble via interaction with the Tribble Test Vendor on Drozana Station. Starbase 234 will offer no mission rewards, but presents a unique opportunity to test builds and measure combat effectiveness against a variety of enemies and situations. New Romulus Command Decides to Share the Love After teasing the change in a recent fiction blog, Cryptic announced last week that “[Romulan] leadership has decided it's time to return the trust that has been shown to them, and allow their trusted allies the opportunity to test out their Singularity technology and specialized ship”. Nearly all Romulan ships that were exclusive to that faction will become available to Starfleet, KDF, and Dominion Vanguard captains. The captains need only have completed the Tutorial and, if applicable, advance to the 25th century. If you've been waiting years to put your Federation Captain in command of a Scimitar, well now's your chance! Event UI - Prelude On Tuesday, August 27, the Star Trek Online team officially announced their newest UI update: The Event Rewards Tab.  In a post, written by UI artist Joanna Gianulis, it was stated that “The Events now live on their own tab in the Mission Journal. There can now be multiple types of events, each tailored to their own specific goal and rewards.[...] Progress will now work like earned XP where you simply gain it until you reach your goal and then you can claim your reward. [...] All progress for upcoming Events will also now be truly account-wide, allowing you to participate in any of the new activities on any of your characters without having to worry about who had how much progress toward which reward on your account.” Information is still scarce, but we are monitoring the situation, and will likely have more to report next week! OTHER GAMING NEWS Scopely Expands Their Offices Scopely, the developer behind the hugely successful mobile game Star Trek: Fleet Command has announced plans to expand its offices in Dublin, Ireland and Barcelona, Spain. The announcement comes on the back of reports that Fleet Command has grossed $100 million since November 2018, as well as further success in several of its other franchises.  According to Scopely Co-CEO Javier Ferreira, “Our Dublin and Barcelona teams play a critical role in the Scopely journey, and we are actively hiring across both markets.” Scopely will also be doubling the size of its Los Angeles offices by 2020. Star Trek Leaves Spacedock in CSC Crypto Space Commander, CSC, launched for Early Access this summer, and now on August 29th, Star Trek will be crossing over into CSC's Galactic Federation. We've introduced listeners to CSC before, a sandbox space MMO built on an Ethereum based player economy. When this event begins on August 29th, the game will sell off the original Enterprise NCC-1701, the first of its six new Star Trek starships, in a six day Dutch auction, starting at $200,000 going down to as low as $0. Yes, we said $200,000. Other new Star Trek ships will be auctioned in turn after that. Additionally, 10,000 Star Trek Supply Crates will go on sale for $25 each. Patrols are designed for single player action, though they’ll support a full team, with no wait for queueing. Just click ‘Launch’ to immediately get into the mission. Test Your Build on Tribble at Starbase 234 According to STO’s recent blog, “Starbase 234 has been rebuilt from the ground up to once again serve as a training ground for Alliance starships. This improved Starbase makes extensive use of holographic technology to allow captains to engage in simulated combat in a wide variety of situations.”  What this news means for players is a built-in mission that allows them to choose their own combat challenge, specify desired difficulty, and get real-time feedback from STO’s own combat parsing functionality. At least for now, the entirely new system will be available only on Tribble via interaction with the Tribble Test Vendor on Drozana Station. Starbase 234 will offer no mission rewards, but presents a unique opportunity to test builds and measure combat effectiveness against a variety of enemies and situations. New Romulus Command Decides to Share the Love After teasing the change in a recent fiction blog, Cryptic announced last week that “[Romulan] leadership has decided it’s time to return the trust that has been shown to them, and allow their trusted allies the opportunity to test out their Singularity technology and specialized ship”. Nearly all Romulan ships that were exclusive to that faction will become available to Starfleet, KDF, and Dominion Vanguard captains. The captains need only have completed the Tutorial and, if applicable, advance to the 25th century. If you’ve been waiting years to put your Federation Captain in command of a Scimitar, well now’s your chance! Star Trek Leaves Spacedock in CSC Crypto Space Commander, CSC, launched for Early Access this summer, and now on August 29th, Star Trek will be crossing over into CSC’s Galactic Federation. We’ve introduced listeners to CSC before, a sandbox space MMO built on an Ethereum based player economy. Each crate will contain one Star Trek starship and four random Star Trek modules. In the Supply Crates, you’ll have a 90% chance of obtaining a Rio Grande Runabout-class starship, as seen in Deep Space Nine. The remaining 10% of crates will have one of these rarer starships: the Enterprise, Enterprise-D, Voyager, Defiant, or Rotarran. When Wendy Carlos released Switched On Bach, the first classical album recorded on a synthesizer, she radically transformed people's understandings of what electronic music could do. At the time of the album's release, Wendy was also six-months into hormone therapy and struggling with her rising fame and anxieties about how the public might react to her transition. But Switched On Bach was a huge success and Wendy went on not only to critical acclaim, but to work with famed composers and film directors, including scoring Stanley Kubrik's A Clockwork Orange and The Shining. The ground is wet, and the snow is mostly gone.  But even the mud smells fecund in its dormancy.  There are a lot of trees and branches down.  From all the nor'easters we had.  I might go for a walk with my old dog today and bring my axe to clear some of the dead fall out of the trail.  My wife is always telling me I shouldn't drive around with an axe.  I'm not sure I understand the safety concern.  I was sharpening my axe last week and wondered how many people in the world still know how to sharpen and axe?  Such an ancient thing.  We humans have been rubbing stones against metal for a few thousand years. Yes, the dog is still alive, I'm still alive and the woods are coming alive.  Today we have a great story for you.  I talk with Stephanie who decided to become a runner the day the bombs went off in Boston 5 years ago.  From the emotional beginning, she'll be running her first qualified Boston this year, on that anniversary.  Compelling stuff. In section one I'll talk about active tapers.  In section two I'll talk about hope and emotional intent.  Yes, I'm a little bit more than a week out from running my 20th Boston Marathon.  If you want to follow me my number is 18051.  Solidly in the midpack with a 3:33 qualification time.  It looks like we are going to get good running weather.  50's and overcast.  This may be a good year.  But you never know in New England. I'm in my taper.  This week still has a few quality workouts in it but next week I'm sure we'll be shutting it down.  My weight is good.  My fitness is good.  I've got a little pirifomis pain but I'm working through it.  All in all I guess I don't have any excuses! … Racing is like life.  You have to find that knife's edge between too little and too much.  Too fast and too slow.  It's a balancing act.  Picture yourself walking along that mountain ridge.  It drops off into the depths precipitously on both sides.  But we have trained.  We know how to walk the edge with confidence and aplomb. On with the show! … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? It means you don't have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member's only audio. There are book reviews, odd philosophical thoughts, zombie stories and I curate old episodes for you to listen to.  I recently added that guy who cut off is foot so he could keep training and my first call with Geoff Galloway.   “Curated” means I add some introductory comments and edit them up a bit.  So anyhow – become a member so I can keep paying my bills.   … The RunRunLive podcast is Ad Free and listener supported.  We do this by offering a membership option where members get Access to Exclusive Members Only audio and articles. Member only race reports, essays and other bits just for you! Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Section one – Active Taper- Voices of reason – the conversation  ·  Hi everyone!! Here is my introductory story – the video thing is not so much my forte'! Grab a sammich and sit back…it's a little long, but I think worth the read!  :) We all have a story about where we were the day the bombs went off…This is the day I became a runner… I grew up watching the race, the Red Sox, the Bruins, and doing so many things the great city of Boston has to offer. Five years ago, my husband and I moved to Las Vegas. On Patriots Day 2013, I was in my living room watching the race on TV. When it was finished, I turned it off, and shortly after that got a phone call from my mom, in tears, yelling at me to turn the TV back on, that “something really bad had happened”. And there it was…the news unfolding…my brother was running the marathon that day and his wife and my dad were near the finish line waiting for him. With phone lines down, it took some time to connect with his wife and my dad – oddly, Facebook messenger was operating and this became our life line. It would then be a couple of hours before we got word that my brother was ok…. Having just recently moved and retired, I was looking for some change in my life that would be healthy, but I wasn't sure what I wanted or needed to do. I was overweight and sedentary. Most everything took so much effort. Everything about the bombings though felt personal. MY city had been attacked and for a few hours, I wasn't sure if I had lost half of my family. As I watched the world wrap its arms around Boston, I also watched the running community and how they responded. I wanted to be part of that - I was all in! I was going to be a runner! My brother helped me get started and we talked daily about what happened and the continued news reports…I bought a pair of running shoes. Set a start date. Set a goal – get to the end of the street and back – 1 mile. I was able to “jog” about 20 feet before I had to stop and say, “What the hell????” “This is SO hard!!”. It only made me want it more… My brother instructed me to find a 5k event to keep me working toward goals. I did and six months later, I crushed it with a time of 40:53!! Hahaha!! I slept the rest of the day - BUT, I knew I wanted to get better and faster. I found a local running club and then my brother suggested signing up for the BAA 2014 Distance Medley. I was going to be back home for marathon weekend anyway – no way I would miss it! So, the 5k was no problem (although still a huge distance for me at the time). I figured I had enough time to train for a 10k, but that half marathon?? Holy hell…I didn't know if I could do that. Marathon weekend and the first race for the Distance Medley came. The city was on fire with an energy I can't begin to describe! I am forever grateful to have been able to be part of that weekend. I ran the 10k with my brother and my dad, at my dad's pace. He had been so affected by everything the previous year, that this meant everything to him. I had been training with my running club coach and was able to complete my very first half marathon as part of the Distance Medley, in Boston, the city I love so much. My finish time was 2:41:32. I vowed I would never do another one – the training, the anxiety, the effort – it felt impossible… And those are the things that propelled me forward to want to do better at half marathons. I spent the next couple of years being 100% driven toward better running, faster times, and overall fitness. I lost 90 lbs. I brought my 2:41 half time down to a 1:48. Then I had a conversation with my coach…the 5th year anniversary of the bombings, the thing that started me running was coming up in 2018. I would be turning 50 the week before that race. I decided that I wanted to run Boston to bring my running journey full circle. I thought being a charity runner would be a good idea to make this happen. He stated that in no way was I going to run charity (although we both support charity running 100%). I was going to qualify. I had all the right things inside me, driven by determination and Boston to make it happen. I had no desire to run multiple marathons to try to BQ and get to Boston. It would mean the most to me to run April 2018, and if I got in, it was meant to be. If not, it wasn't. I wasn't going to be a multiple marathon runner. So, the training began and I did everything that was within my power to make it successful – nutrition, training plan, cross training, strength training, reading multiple books about mental focus & motivation – all of it. May 29, 2017, I stepped up to the start line of Mountains 2 Beach Marathon. I was ready. I was hungry for it. And I got it! Although I was shooting for a 10 min window & hoping at worst a 5 min window. I came in at 3:56:31, with around 3:30 to spare. Although this isn't a guarantee, it was enough to keep me somewhat confident, until registration time. I kept with my belief that of it was meant to happen, it would. And it did…I made it in by 6 seconds! Wooosh! After basking in the glory, the butterflies, and flip flopping stomach, I was going to be running Boston! I was ecstatic!! Then, it was time for training to begin. My coach of four years, the only way I have known running and the coach I trusted to guide me, unfortunately made inappropriate sexual advances toward me. My husband and I fired him on the spot. But then I was panicked…What do I do? How do I train? How does this all work? I have an amazing support system of running friends that worked me through the grief & loss of my coach and helped get me get invested in a training plan to keep me on track. I have been following Hal Higdon's Boston plan, with lots of success. I don't have a time goal. My goal is to simply take it ALL in. Just to enjoy the entire experience, the crowds, the energy – and everything that got me to this point. I have two injuries slowing me down – residual pain from two hammy tears and now a bone bruise in my heel, but NOTHING will keep me from that start line in Hopkinton! In just under four weeks, I will be running a race I NEVER thought possible when I first started running. I will be bringing my running journey full circle, as I bring it back to Boston, to run the race that started it all for me. I will be turning 50 a week before the race. I will be bringing closure to an event that changed my life completely and fully. And I will be doing it all with amazing friends and my incredible husband who has supported every step of this journey (and just ran his first 5k!!!). Section two – Hope and intent –   Outro Alright my friends you have hoped yourself – with good intent – through to the end of episode 4-384 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  Next time we talk will be post marathon. Should have something interesting to say.  We'll see. Boston is always an adventure.  Then I have to throw myself into ultra training for the Burning River 100 in July.  I've been watching my way through a couple good shows on Netflix.  The first one, I think I told you about is Altered Carbon.  This is a hard scifi series based on a very good hard scifi novel.  I would recommend reading the novel before you watch the series though.  The show sticks very closely to the novel's narrative but in doing so it becomes a bit of an insider game.  If you don't know the backstory of the universe you might think it is some sort of soft porn snuff movie.   The universe's conceit is that humans have discovered alien technology whereby you can put yourself on a chip.  Which means you can be reanimated in any body or ‘sleeve' and few people suffer ‘real death'.  Leads to some tricky cultural problems when people can live forever. I'm starting the second novel in the series as we speak. Another one I've been working my way through is Peaky Blinders.  Which is about a gang in Birmingham after the great war.  It's very well done.  It's a bit like Boardwalk Empire.  The characters are compelling.  It occurs to me that it is the embodiment of a set in the roaring 1920's.  (If you don't get reference google it.  The Stanley Kubrik rendition of this Anthony Burgess novel in 1971 was quite the cult classic – you owe it to yourself to watch it.  You'll never listen to Beethoven's 9h the same way again.) This is another one where if you have a weak stomach for the vinni-vin-vino or the ultra-violence you might want to stay away.  I myself was having dreams of murder last night.  I'll give you a running related slice of content recommendation as well.  As part of the marathon run up this year the BAA is putting out a podcast.  So far, they have interviewed Boston winners Jack Fultz, Bill Rodgers and Sarah Mae Berman, and also our friend Dave McGillivray. Sara Mae won the race before women were official.  Great to remember, with all the dynamics of women in society today and current trials and tribulations, it wasn't that long ago that the maximum allowable distance for women to compete at was 200 meters.  Seems absurd today, but that didn't change until the 70's.  Worth a listen.  Very inspirational.  These women changed the world, like Stephanie is changing the world, like we all can change the world by filling that moment between stimulus and response with our intent.  I'll see you out there.   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks -

Yes, the dog is still alive, I’m still alive and the woods are coming alive.  Today we have a great story for you.  I talk with Stephanie who decided to become a runner the day the bombs went off in Boston 5 years ago.  From the emotional beginning, she’ll be running her first qualified Boston this year, on that anniversary.  Compelling stuff. In section one I’ll talk about active tapers.  In section two I’ll talk about hope and emotional intent.  Yes, I’m a little bit more than a week out from running my 20th Boston Marathon.  If you want to follow me my number is 18051.  Solidly in the midpack with a 3:33 qualification time.  It looks like we are going to get good running weather.  50’s and overcast.  This may be a good year.  But you never know in New England. I’m in my taper.  This week still has a few quality workouts in it but next week I’m sure we’ll be shutting it down.  My weight is good.  My fitness is good.  I’ve got a little pirifomis pain but I’m working through it.  All in all I guess I don’t have any excuses! … Racing is like life.  You have to find that knife’s edge between too little and too much.  Too fast and too slow.  It’s a balancing act.  Picture yourself walking along that mountain ridge.  It drops off into the depths precipitously on both sides.  But we have trained.  We know how to walk the edge with confidence and aplomb. On with the show! … I’ll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? It means you don’t have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member’s only audio. Here is my introductory story – the video thing is not so much my forte’! Grab a sammich and sit back…it’s a little long, but I think worth the read! Having just recently moved and retired, I was looking for some change in my life that would be healthy, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted or needed to do. I was overweight and sedentary. Most everything took so much effort. Everything about the bombings though felt personal. MY city had been attacked and for a few hours, I wasn’t sure if I had lost half of my family. Holy hell…I didn’t know if I could do that. Marathon weekend and the first race for the Distance Medley came. The city was on fire with an energy I can’t begin to describe! I am forever grateful to have been able to be part of that weekend. I ran the 10k with my brother and my dad, at my dad’s pace. If not, it wasn’t. I wasn’t going to be a multiple marathon runner. Although this isn’t a guarantee, it was enough to keep me somewhat confident, until registration time. I have been following Hal Higdon’s Boston plan, with lots of success. I don’t have a time goal. We’ll see. Boston is always an adventure.  Then I have to throw myself into ultra training for the Burning River 100 in July.  I’ve been watching my way through a couple good shows on Netflix.  The first one, I think I told you about is Altered Carbon.  This is a hard scifi series based on a very good hard scifi novel.  I would recommend reading the novel before you watch the series though.  The show sticks very closely to the novel’s narrative but in doing so it becomes a bit of an insider game.  If you don’t know the backstory of the universe you might think it is some sort of soft porn snuff movie.   The universe’s conceit is that humans have discovered alien technology whereby you can put yourself on a chip.  Which means you can be reanimated in any body or ‘sleeve’ and few people suffer ‘real death’.  Leads to some tricky cultural problems when people can live forever. I’m starting the second novel in the series as we speak. Another one I’ve been working my way through is Peaky Blinders.  Which is about a gang in Birmingham after the great war.  It’s very well done.  It’s a bit like Boardwalk Empire.  The characters are compelling.  It occurs to me that it is the embodiment of a set in the roaring 1920’s.  (If you don’t get reference google it.  The Stanley Kubrik rendition of this Anthony Burgess novel in 1971 was quite the cult classic – you owe it to yourself to watch it.  You’ll never listen to Beethoven’s 9h the same way again.) This is another one where if you have a weak stomach for the vinni-vin-vino or the ultra-violence you might want to stay away.  I myself was having dreams of murder last night.  I’ll give you a running related slice of content recommendation as well.  As part of the marathon run up this year the BAA is putting out a podcast.  So far, they have interviewed Boston winners Jack Fultz, Bill Rodgers and Sarah Mae Berman, and also our friend Dave McGillivray. Sara Mae won the race before women were official.  Great to remember, with all the dynamics of women in society today and current trials and tribulations, it wasn’t that long ago that the maximum allowable distance for women to compete at was 200 meters.  Seems absurd today, but that didn’t change until the 70’s.  Worth a listen.  Very inspirational.  These women changed the world, like Stephanie is changing the world, like we all can change the world by filling that moment between stimulus and response with our intent.  I’ll see you out there.   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks -
