Any recommendation for a separate headrest, such as the kind that forms to one's neck, interesting, or one that is flat to go on top of it. Thank you so much for your time. All right, Marlene, get ready, because I already know what's coming.Lesley Logan 11:22 So unfortunately, you all, many, many people are now making Reformers who've never done Pilates before, and they don't know that these things make a difference. So I'm super, super glad you're curious, because your headrest is not supposed to be stationary. So what I don't know from this is, if your headrest is stationary up or stationary down. My hope is that it's stationary down, because then we can get like a wedge pillow of some kind that will mimic a head rest being up. But then you could take that, that insert away, and then you could actually still do overhead exercises. If it is stationary up, you cannot do any overhead exercises. No, there's nothing we can do. I don't even know that what you can do, because I don't have a picture of your Reformer, don't know if it has hinges, if you could add anything. Unclear. So what I will say is, I'm just going to assume your headrest is stationary down for the rest of this conversation. You don't want a pillow or headrest that forms to your neck, because we're not actually trying to support the neck in that way we're, actually, when we have the headrest up, it's meant to tilt your head in just a way, so your neck can relax, but your upper abs can engage without us even telling you. That's why the headrest is up for footwork, for frogs and circles, for running, for pelvic lift, that your headrest is up so that your you just have this nice little support to help you engage your upper abs without you using your neck. It's really quite cool. He's very fast. So anyways, and it's down when you're not using that. So you can do overhead exercises. You get your box on top, things like that. So I would look into, Marlene, some sort of like foam wedge that you can cut to the size of your headrest. Brad Crowell 13:00 And firm foam. Lesley Logan 13:01 I would definitely say something firm. You don't want to be like a pillow.Brad Crowell 13:05 Right. So, so, like, I'm thinking about your baby chair and that little funny wedge that you have for the baby chair. Kind of would be like that. So, like, and that wedge, you're sitting on it, and it doesn't move, like, it doesn't give, it, literally, is intended to level out the baby chair. So in this case, you would want something that's firm like that as well. Lesley Logan 13:23 Yeah, very firm, like, you can even.Brad Crowell 13:26 Like, you basically just taking it on and off.Lesley Logan 13:27 I mean, I would imagine, like, if you have someone handy in your life with, like, a really cool saw that could, like, take a yoga block and, like, slice it from. At the age of 81, Matthew is still rocking those question mark suits and has spent four decades helping people find free resources that they did not know existed, which I kind of think is amazing. He has written over 100 books, y'all, he's written 100 books. He has appeared on shows like Oprah, Larry King, The Good Morning America, and built a thriving online community that connects people to grants, businesses and funding and overlooked financial support. PS, I did math while I was listening, his, his community is like 5000 plus people. Yeah, that's crazy. From a string of failed businesses to becoming a recognizable voice for everyday people, Matthew has made it his mission to make support accessible. And it proves it's not about luck. It's about knowing where to look. So we're fired up about that. That was amazing. Tell me one of your favorite things about this convo. Lesley Logan 16:47 Okay. How many things can I talk about? But first I want to just like he emphasized, there's no single formula for success. He talks about how life and starting anything new, this is important, means dealing with failure, struggle and a lot of guesswork. My perfectionist, here it is from someone who's written 100 books and is 81 years old and seen it all. You know, it come like success actually comes from dealing with failure, struggling, a lot of guesswork. And he believes success doesn't come from knowing everything, but from possessing the energy and willingness to keep trying and learn from failures. Hold on. I have to, I have to say this. He strongly advocates that you follow your heart. Stated, he says the way to get anything done is your heart has to be in it. He also said your heart is smarter than your brain, and to trust that more than anything. And I love this, because I think, like a lot of people, like, well, what's specifically when we coach people on their Pilates business, I'm like, oh, you know, who do you want to help? Well, that's, I want to help everyone. Brad Crowell 17:45 Me, too. Lesley Logan 17:45 Right. But like, who do you want to help? Because if your heart's not in it, you're gonna really be annoyed helping the person that you don't want to help. And then you're if your heart's not in it, you're gonna start resenting them and, like, start going, oh, this becomes another job, right? Like, your heart has to be in what you're doing.Brad Crowell 18:01 Yeah, definitely. You know, it's so funny. We were just talking about this recently, where I feel like there's the two extremes, like I'll do anything for money. I'll only do it if I love it. And, you know, I know I kind of flip flopped over this, you know, during my life. And he has a very compelling argument to follow your heart, and I think also too, you know, he's very savvy. He's very business savvy. So he's been able to figure out how, by following his heart, can he also make money. And he's turned it into like a mission, and that mission has attracted other people who are like-minded. And, I mean, that is like the ideal scenario. Lesley Logan 18:45 Well, and also, if you realize, like, you know, first of all, you know, Big Magic is a great book for everyone to read. And some of your things that you love to do, that you're like, are creative, aren't meant for making money on. So that's, we're not. I don't think that Matthew or us are advocating that you like if you love pottery, that you go or you only make pots, and that's how you make money. That whatever you are setting yourself up to do, to go through the struggles, to go through the obstacles, to go through the failures, you'll, you have to actually want to do it. You can have to care about the problem that you're solving. If you don't care, you're not gonna be able to handle those obstacles. You're not gonna be able to go through it. You're gonna, you'll get, you'll get a door slam on your face and just go, okay, well, I'm not into it, right? So I think that's what he means, that your heart has to be in it. Like not everything you love doing will be a thing you make money on, but you gotta care about what you're doing. Gotta have care for it to be successful.Brad Crowell 19:40 Yeah, and I think there was something he said that just went right out of my mind. But he, he, he was talking about the when his, when he first, he actually, first off, I had no idea, he was in the military, but apparently he was in the military after he got out, he started.Lesley Logan 20:02 81 (inaudible). I don't think you get to be 81 and you weren't, unless you're an asshole, draft dodger dickhead. Anyway.Brad Crowell 20:02 That's fair. So he, he said he started a bunch of businesses and they failed. He started another business and they failed, and then he became a consultant, and that somehow, you know, was working, but then he was making millionaires billionaires. And he was like, that sucks. You know, he's like, these people don't care about anybody except for themselves. And he was not and he was not really enjoying it. And you know, he said he had this moment though, where he's showing up for the job, and he's like, uh, someday it's gonna be better and more fun, and then hopefully when I'm retired, I'll be able to go enjoy life. And he said, wait a minute. Why? Why should I keep doing something that I hate just hoping that someday it'll make it'll be better, it'll I will enjoy it more, or it's gonna pay me what I want to pay. He's like, I only have one life to live, and I'm better. I should start enjoying what I'm doing now. How do I do that? How do I do that? You know? So he said he flipped the script and decided to prioritize having fun. And he said having fun is contagious. He said it's a little contagious. In fact, you know, just his approach to the podcast was contagious and fun and joyful, you know. And he said it's also when you're doing something that feels fun, you are naturally motivated to work harder, right? So, you know, instead of like, kicking yourself to go get the thing done, that you have to do, what if you could do something that is fun, you know, you're gonna do it well, because you love doing it?Lesley Logan 21:37 Yeah. Yeah. It made me think a little bit about Gay Hendricks is, like, zone of genius kind of a thing. Like, I feel like. Brad Crowell 21:44 Sure.Lesley Logan 21:44 I feel like they're very similar, except for this one is, like, except for Matthew is teaching us how to get the money we need to go do the thing we love.Brad Crowell 21:54 Yeah, it's, it's very true, and he's encyclopedic with that, as well. So that's how that makes money. So, like, but we can figure out, like, okay, well, how, what does the city need, right? It's technically paradise, but, but, but you can figure out what your city needs to get, what your county needs to get, what state needs, and then go, oh, well, what are they? They're paying for that, they're giving out grants for that. Like, yeah, you do the paperwork. But like, not many people are. Brad Crowell 23:06 Not many people are. Brad Crowell 25:05 I'm 100% sure about Canada. In fact, I have a lot of musician friends who would get grants in Canada where the Canadian government was willing to sponsor. Lesley Logan 25:14 Yes. We have had guests who do that. That is amazing. Brad Crowell 25:16 Yeah. And that that like, I don't even maybe that's available here too. I have no idea, but I'll tell you. You know, that was seemed to me like, like my college friends were like, I want to make an album. And they literally applied to the Canadian federal government, and they got like, 10 grand to make an album. And I was in college going, how the hell, why can't I get 10 grand? Lesley Logan 25:36 I mean, they were Canadian, obviously. Brad Crowell 25:38 Yeah, they were, they were obviously Canadian. So anyway, he shared a bunch of untapped resources. He said that 40% of everything in our economy are organizations that give you free money to solve a problem. I don't really understand that statistic, and I can't actually validate that, but he's been doing this for four decades, y'all, so he knows all these things. He emphasized that these programs are already paid for with our tax dollars. So it's on us to take advantage of them, or the money just sits there, it doesn't get used, right? And also, it might not be the kind of thing that they get to they don't just hoard it and pile it. It might be like, hey, you can give up to $2 million away, but if they don't, they don't get to keep it, right? So basically, it's on us to go take advantage of what is available to us. And it was fascinating to listen to him talk about the different reasons that someone might want to go get a talk to these organizations and go through the process. He emphasized that, well, yeah, there, and this stuff is already funded. It's already paid for. He advised the to seek out free government and nonprofit resources directly, rather than relying on standard search engines like Google, specifically, because they don't actually do SEO, or they're gated searches, you can't actually search them with outside search engines like Google. Right? And so basically, he gave us examples like findhelp.org which is amazing. It's about local finding local help for things like food, housing, health, money.Lesley Logan 27:04 That, right there is so amazing how many people are struggling to afford groceries right now. Like, maybe, maybe you're not someone who is it, but maybe someone you know is. You can send them that information. Like, who? Who knew if you use the government agency, maybe it would have been different.Brad Crowell 28:02 I wish I had known when I when I had a failed business. It would have been really helpful. Wish I had known. So anyway, what about you? I mean, all those things and there's still more. Lesley Logan 28:11 Okay, so we said it already. We're gonna say it again, because it's a Be It Action Item. Once you find a resource, book an appointment, okay? Matthew said, everybody just wants to fill out on application online, and wait for the money. You can't do that, he said, because you don't know. Brad Crowell 28:23 What did everybody wants to say what? Lesley Logan 28:23 Everybody wants to just fill out the applications online. Like, you know, like, oh, let me just do it online. It's just copy paste, copy paste. And he's saying, don't do that, because you don't know how the application should be filled out. And, like, there's always the little nuances, right? Like, we're currently working with lawyers who are filling out legal forms for us to go to Canada. So if we had done it ourselves, we wouldn't know the insight and the nuances to like, oh, actually, put this instead of that, because this will get you across. And that is actually going to be like, we have enough of those. So like, you want to make sure that you're working with someone who's like, fighting for you to fill it out correctly will tell you what certain things mean. I mean, sometimes I don't even know. It's like, you're like, oh, I think that's where I put my business name, and it's not, it's where you put your account number or something like that. So, you know, just work with the people. They're in the office I'm talking, I'm sure it'll brighten their day to hear what you're working on, right, what you need help with. Also, they often know the other people in the area, the community, the other resources to help you, right, like, oh, if I'm not the right resource, this person is, if you're starting a business or a nonprofit or side hustle, the smartest move is to call your local SBA office and speak with a counselor. Again, not something online, not a chatGPT. You gotta go and talk to someone. And then he also said, talk to experts who.Brad Crowell 29:42 SBA stands for Small Business Administration, right? So that's a federal government thing, but they have local offices around the country, so you can actually go in and make an appointment to to their office. In fact, also too, not that I'm like, a huge fan of the big banks, but big banks actually often have training programs for business owners, too.Lesley Logan 30:02 Yes, but we're not fans of big banks because they won't help you get an SBA.Brad Crowell 30:05 Almost never will they help you get a loan. But, you know, there are resources available there too, but the SBA is actually, like, trying to help you get the money. Lesley Logan 30:13 Yeah, I would fuck the big banks.Brad Crowell 30:17 If the big banks, like, honestly, the SBA doesn't let you apply for SBA funding directly through the SBA. You have to apply through a bank. You don't necessarily need to apply through a big bank, though. So that's the difference there.Lesley Logan 30:30 Right. So, and then also make sure you have the experts who can help you, help people like you, guide you to the right programs and the paperwork, and they usually do this for free. And you know, he's someone who loves to help people. So, like, there's, there's things out there. You're not on your own. Your friends and family might not be the best people to ask, but, you know what? Go to these offices and go, oh, they can't help you. Do you know who? Do you know who will, who can? Like, what else should I search? What should I be searching? Because I get the right thing. Daniel didn't just decide to niche down overnight. He did what most agency owners do: listened to advice on the matter, got inspired, and then slammed into reality. The first big obstacle he did not expect was letting go of “easy money” and legacy clients to go all-in on a focused market. He knew it was the right call but dropping old accounts and income streams wasn't fun. Next, it was building trust in a market that didn't trust marketers. Turns out, flooring companies aren't like your typical trades. They're often run more like retail stores than contractors. Multiple locations. Bigger payroll. Savvier buyers. And they've been burned by bad marketing agencies before. So just ranking them on page one of Google was not enough. Daniel learned fast that his new niche didn't just want leads they wanted the whole system: branding, follow-up, sales process, outreach, repeat business. In other words: the actual solution not just SEO. Because the real lesson here is about getting under the hood of your client's real pain points, not just selling your “service of the month.” Authority is Earned One Small Win at a Time If you're wondering why Daniel didn't quit (although he did consider it many times), it wasn't because niching was easy. He stuck with it because he saw the momentum stacking up: A podcast appearance got him in front of flooring pros. A trade show speaking gig landed him more eyes. He sponsored a Facebook group. He kept learning exactly what flooring clients actually needed and then built the solutions, piece by piece. One client turned into two. Then five. Then fifteen. Today Daniel's agency is firmly planted as the go-to marketer for flooring pros. He now has the authority, pricing power, and clarity he didn't have as a generalist. Clarity First, Everything Else Second When he started his SEO agency, Daniel was living in Tel Aviv, working at an SEO agency. Since not a lot of people knew about Search Engine Optimization there, it seemed like an opportunity to go on business on his own, which he did alongside another American friend who also wanted to start his own business. That partnership worked fine for the first couple of years, until it didn't. After Daniel moved back to the US, the relationship felt like playing Tug-of-War. They lived on different time zones, had competing interests and visions and the best call was for each to continue on their own path. It wasn't easy. Daniel has spent the last two years picking up the pieces and setting a new vision for his business. Who are we? Who should we not serve? What kind of agency do we actually want to be? That search for a new stage attracted a new partner — someone who brought the exact pieces Daniel needed, at a moment when he finally had the clarity that's so hard (and so damn profitable) to get right. Only after that did he attract a new partner - someone who brought missing business expertise and industry knowledge. That alignment supercharged sales and positioned them to charge more and work with better clients. AI as an Unexpected Business Therapist Daniel admits: he's a strategist, not a “numbers guy.” But instead of hiring an expensive consultant, he leaned heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT to interrogate his processes, nail down his goals, and even fix onboarding gaps that caused early-client headaches. Great owners use AI not to replace people, but to think better and move faster - especially when you can't see your own blind spots. Pro tip: Have AI interview you about your agency goals. It forces clarity you might avoid on your own. Rebuild Processes Before You Scale With ChatGPT as a voice he can bounce business ideas off of, Daniel has been working on developing clearer processes. While he used to shy away from these conversations, afraid to uncover huge flaws in the business, he now happily dives into deep strategy work to improve client communication and expectations. For instance, the first 100 days with a new client can feel like a ghost town and that can spook even the best-fit clients. Daniel's fix? Using AI and team workshops to tighten internal and external communication, so clients stay engaged while you work. This is crucial for avoiding churn and turning strategy into execution faster. There's No One-Size-Fits-All Path Daniel's advice for agency owners is to avoid comparing themselves to peers at all cost. Everyone is on their own path and success is better defined individually. Had he followed common advice, he would've never gotten into a second partnership, which has really helped the agency's growth. Furthermore, his growth was slower by choice, but deeper because he focused on getting the right clients and the right team before chasing pure revenue. One of the most common questions chiropractors ask is, “How much should I be spending on marketing?” Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all answer. Your marketing budget depends on your goals, experience, available time, and financial situation. In this episode of the Rocket Chiro Podcast, Jerry Kennedy breaks down what chiropractors need to consider when setting a smart, sustainable marketing budget. What's Normal? Most small businesses spend 5–10% of gross revenue on marketing. Growth-focused businesses often spend 10–20%. Chiropractors? Usually far less. Many operate with 2–3%, and some don't spend anything on external marketing at all. However, even if you think you're not spending on marketing, you probably are. Website hosting, domain names, print materials, business cards—it all counts. The real difference is whether you're intentionally investing in marketing or passively coasting. Why Chiropractors Often Underspend Chiropractors—especially new ones—typically have limited budgets. There's often pride in “doing it all yourself” or “growing by referral,” but this mindset can hold you back. Ironically, the time you most need to invest in marketing (early in practice) is when you usually have the least money and the least experience making smart marketing decisions. Jerry shares his own experience of starting out with a large loan. While the money helped him get set up, it also created false security and delayed asking for help. Too much money, too soon, without a strategy, can lead to poor choices. So, What Should You Spend? There's no exact number. Your marketing budget should be based on: Your practice goals Your available time and money Your marketing skills Your current momentum Don't make zero spending the goal. At the same time, don't fall for high-ticket gimmicks that promise the moon. Be intentional and strategic. Budgeting Basics for Chiropractors Do: Invest in low-cost, high-impact strategies if you're tight on funds. Understand that marketing takes either time or money—often both. Prioritize foundational strategies first (see below). Spend money when it saves you meaningful time. Don't: Gamble on expensive marketing hoping it'll “just work.” Spend money you don't have or overcommit time you can't spare. Lie to yourself about your situation. Be honest so you can plan wisely. Start with the Essentials Before jumping into fancy ads or shiny marketing campaigns, focus on your foundational marketing: A professional, patient-focused website Local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization Generating and managing online reviews Community outreach and networking Custom social media content (if you're willing to create it) These strategies are more affordable, sustainable, and effective over time. Big-ticket ads, print campaigns, and radio spots can come later—if they make sense for your goals and budget. Time vs. Money As your practice grows, your available money increases and time becomes more limited. That's when outsourcing makes more sense. For example, a new chiropractor might build their own website, while a seasoned doc is more likely to outsource that task to save time. Social media tip: Avoid paying for canned content. If you want results, you'll need to share your own personality, voice, and expertise. You can create simple content and pass it off to someone for editing and posting—but generic content won't move the needle. Short-Term vs. Long-Term Strategy Understand the type of marketing you're doing: Short-term marketing (like Google Ads or in-person networking) can generate fast results. Long-term marketing (like SEO or relationship building) builds momentum over time. Ideally, your strategy should include both. Just be clear about your goals so you can match your budget and efforts accordingly. Avoid the Comparison Trap Don't compare your marketing budget or practice stats to other chiropractors without context. Chiropractors often exaggerate their numbers. Even if the numbers are real, you don't know the whole story. Jerry shares a story about a friend with a big, multi-doc practice who grossed 3–4x what Jerry did. But after expenses, the friend only brought home a few thousand more per month—and carried far more stress. Bigger isn't always better. Final Thoughts There's no magic number. The right marketing budget for your chiropractic practice is the one that fits your situation, supports your goals, and delivers a positive return on investment. Start with foundational strategies. First of all, if you're not watching this on YouTube, you're gonna want to see the man that's in front of me, because he has never let me down the two times I've seen him. He has the best suits on, the best glasses on, the most gorgeous hair. Matthew Lesko, can you tell everyone who you are and what you rock at?Matthew Lesko 2:36 Matthew Lesko, what I rock at? Boy, I just struggle. That's what rocking is. Man, it takes work to get through this shit, you know, everybody thinks there's some formula. No, there's no formula. You're guessing your ass off every day and hoping something works. The only thing you need is energy to do stuff, because the more stuff you do, because any, any that you get some plan about what to do in life, and that's not going to work, don't worry about it. But you could try maybe a little bit there you could do, but you got to figure your own shit out. And, but help could help you, just at least get you a little bit on the way. But, yeah, that's what it is. We all struggle and the experts want to make a lot of money to try to convince you they know the secret to life. Now they don't know what the fuck to do with their own life, you know. And so maybe you can claim little items to open your mind a little bit more. But really, life is trying something and failing. It's, it's like, if you're going to do something new in life, that's like learning to walk, you know, or learning to ride a bike, you're going to fall on your ass a lot. That's, what I think here is your loved ones are your worst enemy, because they say, don't do that. You're going to fail. Yes, you are. You're going to run into big bumps in the road. You're going to fail at something, and you just keep fucking going because you want to do that. So that's why key in life is not knowing exactly what to do, because nobody really knows, and you have to figure that out. That's a trial and error. And what you have to do is you use your brain as little as possible. Follow your heart as much as you can. I mean, you got to have the brain part, you know, so you don't fall off a cliff and do something really fucking stupid. But the way to get anything done is your heart has to be in it. I mean, whether it's professional life or personal life, man, if your heart and soul is not there, you're not going to make it happen, because it's going to be a pain in the ass, and you're going to leave on the second time it's a pain in the ass, or maybe the third.Lesley Logan 4:45 Yeah or some people the first time because they think it should be easier. Or, like, I've heard people say, oh, this is a sign I'm not supposed to do it. It's like, no.Matthew Lesko 4:55 That's a sign you're human. Lesley Logan 4:56 Yeah. I mean, like, like, everyone has obstacles. I really appreciate this honesty. Thank you so much, because it's true. Like, you know, while we're doing this, my husband's actually talking to some business owners that we're hoping to coach, and we tell them, they're like, okay, well, what's the template like? In six weeks how much money am I going to make? And then we're like, anyone who's telling you that there's a template (inaudible) yeah, like this, because they've had so many good business coaches tell them, oh, follow this plan, you'll have 100k launch. You'll have this da-da-da but like that doesn't that's not how it works, because the amount of time you can put into this brilliant idea that you're passionate about is very different than the person next to you. The amount of money you're coming into this brilliant idea with is very different, and then also the life that's around you, or if you have an audience for this idea already, or you have to build it first, like, you can't, don't, I was, like, the quickest thing to know that someone's lying to you is if they have a plan. Because, like, like, I what's the thing? Like, you have a plan and God laughs, or something like that. Like, like, you know, it's just, but it doesn't mean that there's not options or ideas or good things that are out there. It's just that, I think people think, if I buy the plan, and that's going to be the thing, that's going to get me there, as opposed to starting with what you said, which is, like, do you really want to do it? Are you that passionate about it that you'll do it even if you fail? Matthew Lesko 6:18 Right, because you are going to fail. I mean, there are going to be bumps in the road, reasons to not go forward, and that's when people quit, and then they try something else and they try something else, and that's why, even on a, personally, for your heart, I mean, my rule of thumb is your heart is smarter than your brain. You got to trust that more than anything. And, and sometimes you can't get there until you fail your ass off, then there's nothing left. And, and you know that you're special, but you have to find out what you're special in. That's the problem. We go to classes and experts and, and tell us, they're just giving you a clue they don't know, because we're all so different. I mean, you're a rose and I'm a petunia, you know? And how are you going to make a petunia into a rose? Lesley Logan 7:13 And then everyone tries to treat each other like they're a tulip, and no one wants to be taller than the other, right? But you're really a rose and a petunia in a tulip field. Okay, so you Matthew, I feel like you are like coming into our ears today and like giving us true honesty, but also like you clearly lived a life. You've got this gorgeous white hair, you lived this life and also, I don't think anyone like knows how to say this, the way that you're saying it, with so much honesty and love, unless you've, like, lived through lives like you've lived through. Because, you know, it takes time, it takes time to (inaudible) so tell, can you tell us all about how you got, like, what you did before you became a petunia who's bestowing us in all this honesty?Matthew Lesko 8:00 I, god, I'm 81 years old. Can't remember that far, but I do it, really struggled, I mean, I was never good at anything. You know, that's why I just adore artists, because they know what the fuck they have to do, you know, but if you can't sing, dance or whatever, and you don't know what you're really supposed to do every day, and the rest of us have to figure that out. But the longer I do that, the more I see, yes, we all are artists like that is something we have to get up the morning, and there's something inside of us that possesses us to do something because you feel it's important, because you feel it's helping somebody, like now, at 81, I work harder now than ever before. It's not work. I haven't worked in 50 years, and part of, it's having fun in the process. So what I was doing, I was getting I am failing through college and all that kind of thing. When in Navy, I was a naval officer, ship driver, came back, that was Vietnam, and I got an MBA, started businesses that were failing. I had a software company in the 70s that was failing. I was, like, computer science professor, starting another business that failed, a bunch of failures. And I started looking, wow, I'm failing, not having fun, and I'm doing all this shit that maybe in 30, 40, years from now, I'll have fun, and that's crazy. I'm not having any fun, and I'm not successful at it. And so what I did is sort of finally flipped it around. Have fun today, because when you start having fun, you know that's a little contagious. Then also, if you're doing something that you feel you're having fun at, you'll work harder at. You hate playing basketball, but you love golf. You'll be on the golf course still, they have to drag you off, you know. And that's, so, that's what happened. That's how you really learn, that's how you really grow. You're into something you want to be there no matter what and then when I start doing that, then, and I think the other thing is, I find I had to, you have to look inside, you know, help may or may not be have outside, but you really have to be aware of what's inside you listen to that inside you, because that's really the important stuff that's going to come out, and it's hard to listen to it, because we don't, none of us know what the hell to do in life. We're all guessing you know and there's no empathy for that, because the people, coaches, you have to pretend, you know so you could charge a lot of money for what you're guessing about, you know, because that's what people want to hear. You know, unfortunately. Lesley Logan 10:58 Yeah, I think, well, if people are afraid to take risks, because, I mean, you know, you know, you've lived a whole life. Like, if you take, if you are putting your own money into something as an idea and it fails, the the bills don't care, right? Like, they don't care. So, like, you know, like, something that I had someone say, like, there's like, six needs that we all have as humans, certainty and uncertainty. Matthew Lesko 11:30 I thought you said sex needs. Certainty, uncertainty, love and connection, I think one of them has to do with like, uh, significance, excuse me, it's like power, that you mean something, then we also need growth and contribution. The growth and contribution are more like choices. The other four you like, are like, really needs. And I think, like, a lot of us don't want to take a risk on the thing that's on our heart that we know we're supposed to do unless we have certainty that it won't fail, because this job over here that we hate is paying the bills.Matthew Lesko 12:12 Well, to me, you have to do both. You have to be responsible to yourself and the bills and everything and then any waking hour extra you have is to concentrate on finding out what that is inside you. Because if you don't do that, you know it's just life is so much harder. And boy, 81, I am so fucking happy now. I can't believe it. And for I never do, like, live so long, and I didn't know maybe this time I'll have this much fun. I mean, I say, god, if I knew being 81 was this much fun, I would have gotten here a lot fucking earlier, man, why did I wait so long? Lesley Logan 12:59 You are amazing. Because my dad is 72 and I'm like, oh, and he's like, now, like, older than any of the men in his family, right, that have ever lived. And so, like, where it was like, let's get him to 70 like, the whole like, let's get a 72 no one's ever made it to 72 like, let's see. And I was like, you're gonna live to 100 you better watch out. He goes, I don't want to live to 100 but, like, I think clearly the difference is attitude, like you were like, you had that idea, like, have fun today, and now, clearly, and being it till you see it of have fun today, you're having so much fun at 81 you're like, I should have gotten here faster. Matthew Lesko 13:33 Well, another thing that's really happened just last few a years too, is that most of men and your dad's 10 years younger than me or whatever. At least my life, most of it was trying to get stronger, faster, smarter. Well, at 80, none of that shit is going to get better. All that's going downhill. But what I figured out just a couple years ago, more so, is that I could love harder. Now there's one thing I get harder at any age. I could just love harder. And in my generation, I don't know if your dad's the same way. I couldn't even say that word unless they married you.Lesley Logan 14:14 Right, right. No, I think, literally, I don't think he says he loves anyone except for his kids right now.Matthew Lesko 14:20 Never heard it from my family even. And you know what changed me a lot were lesbians. I live in an apartment building here, 70, a lot of cool people, younger people, usually. And there was a woman next to us (inaudible) we really got close and that she she's my gateway drug to saying I love you to a woman, it was safe. Lesley Logan 14:44 Yeah, because it didn't mean anything, she didn't care, like she loved being loved, but didn't take it the wrong way. That's so funny. I know it's really true. Like I like one of my girlfriends, I just rung on the phone the other day, and she had, like, her father passed, and, you know, we end every phone call I love you. And like, you know, I think, yeah, yeah, well, we, you know, we can change it. I, okay. So you are full of so much information. So as far as like, I mean, you are giving us so many good gems, and we can all love harder, but you actually are, I think maybe, like, you actually are, like, the person who helps people. You are an expert in helping people get, get money. So how did, how did you get here? And what are we talking about? Because, like, I when I met you and you told me this, I was like, no freaking way. But then I said that about Pilates, and now I'm a Pilates instructor, so I it's my it's like my sign when I go, no fuck no way, no fucking way. That's like some be it. No way. No one can do that. So can you tell us a little about, like, what you do when you're not just loving on people?Matthew Lesko 15:54 It is, by accident, again, my business has failed, and so what you do is become a consultant. So I have a consultant, like a researcher at the time, back in 70s, for Fortune 500 companies that wanted to do stuff, and I was in Washington, so they wanted to get money to start businesses and buy companies and find out the market for stuff. So I was in Washington, and I'd get I'd go around Washington and find help for them, and offices that give you money, offices that give you free reports on the markets for anything like I did one for Procter & Gamble on pasta, and I found a pasta expert in Washington who just spent a million dollars on some study on what's the good and bad about pasta business, and who makes money and where to get money. And so I take that stuff, and I take the government's name off of it, put my name on it, because nothing in the government is copyrighted, and I thank the department or whatever, and sell it to them for thousands of dollars. They loved it, millionaires, and that's why I saw I was making billionaires out of millionaires. I said, why does the average person know about it? Well I said I want to people. And that was my first successful business. So I was, you know, very happy with that. And but then to reach people on the street had to do with books. I couldn't charge $20,000 to do that. And so then to sell books and through publicity and doing talk shows and stuff like that. And I've been doing that for a long time, but what I see, see anybody can use it, the government, see, 40% of everything in our economy is our organizations that give you free money to solve a problem, whether it's you know, you need money to get out of debt. You need money to get rid of your your bills as an expense. You need money to start a business. You need money to get an education or get a better job. You need money to buy a house or fix up your house. You need money for I was anything you want. Is there health care, free, legal help? It's all in the government we I was finding government grant the other day for you want to buy out your boss. You know, $250,000 they'll give you in this is Colorado. To do that. Wisconsin will give you $250,000 just start a business as long as you stay there 15 years.Lesley Logan 18:25 What? I didn't know about Oklahoma. I think there was like a thing where Oklahoma City was trying to get people to move there. So you would get, (inaudible) you got like, $20,000 put down on a place to live in Oaklahoma City and then they would give you $10,000 a year. And I was like, and you had to, and all you had to do was stay for two years, so and then you could rent the house out, or whatever. And I was like, two years, and I could own a property in Oklahoma City, then I could rent it out, like I work for myself. Am I interested? And like, going back to your heart, like my heart wasn't in it. So I was like, that sounds like it's not enough money for me. But like that, I did know about that, so I didn't realize, like, Okay, this is so cool. So, like, all these states have different stuff. You just have to know it exists. The government has this. I think we all just have to, like, can we just, like, take a brief moment we are recording this two months into a shit show. Is there still gonna be money for all of us. Matthew Lesko 19:21 Absolutely, absolutely. Yeah, this is more show business that's going on for the average person. It's all still there. The downside, if all that still works, none of his stuff is legal yet. He just does it and wait till somebody stops him and but what's important is that, can you go online now? That means they all give you money or free help. None of them will never charge you a nickel for what they have. The government gives an average of $18,000 to every adult through programs like this every year, and that's me. And so you have, what, 1800 of them. And so, like, if you. Most of us, well, we got to go to the bank, or we got to rob a 7/11 yeah and that's the options people don't know. That's why I think Google is ruining our country, because everyone's going to Google, and you can't find these in Google because they don't advertise.Lesley Logan 22:24 Right and they're not doing the SEO game. They're not, they don't have time for that. So yeah. Thank you for explaining that because I was just thinking, like, oh, I just like, you know, a couple years ago, my husband and I were trying to get a business loan for our business to help grow it. And we, of course, went to our bank, and we banked with since the dawn of my business, and I've always made more money every year. And they're like, no, you don't get any money from us because you're so small we don't care about you. So then I Googled, like, small business and like, like, nothing, except for all these banks and credit you like, these people don't want me. I'm not banking with them. We had to, like, we actually went to a wee bank event, and that's how my husband found someone who wanted to, like, invest in our business. But, like, this is really cool. So this, like, okay, but like, really, Matthew, so, like, a lot of this, there's stuff for people, like, for housing, so well, I can, there's one I'm saying, like, for people who have babies in NICU, this is amazing. So like, can I find financial assistance for my idea, for my business idea, or is it like?Matthew Lesko 23:26 No, not there, though, let me show you another website. Okay, okay, sba.gov/local-assistance. Lesley Logan 23:38 I see it. Okay.Matthew Lesko 23:41 Local hyphen assistance. You get there, after (inaudible) and there's a place (inaudible) your zip code.Lesley Logan 23:49 Yes, there is. And you can put a distance. And I'm just going to keep it small. Let's see. Lesley Logan 23:57 Yeah, there's, like, it's telling me about the main off, the Las Vegas this, like, the SBA of Las Vegas is, like, down the street from my house.Matthew Lesko 23:59 Many other places that usually the non-SBA are better.Lesley Logan 24:10 Okay, there's, yeah, there's a just in, in, in 25 miles. Looks like I have about 15 options to go through. So, and that's like, that's just like in the like, that's just like the county, yeah. Matthew Lesko 24:25 Every one of them are people that are there to help you find money and help you need to start or expand anything. So the best way to do it, and the way you do this, to me, my advice is to call and make appointments with as many as you can. Everybody has different ideas about how to do things and whatever, and different sources and all that kind of stuff, but they're all there to help anybody who calls to start their business help you find money. Help you find technical help, legal help. Help you do your taxes, all for free, and it's or strategize for strategy. And one of the things I think is best, too, for someone like you, you're you're providing help to people as a service that see if the the government buys that service, what's better from the government is not a grant, is really a contract that you get a government contract, you know, to sell your services to the government, or from a what they do, they spend a lot of money teaching people how to start a business. So like at your what's called the career one-stop center. You go, that's another thing for getting a job or things like that, or even starting a business. And they, they, they pay people to train people to help start a business, so you could be a contractor for somebody like that. Contracting is better than any kind of grant, because you get that forever (inaudible).Lesley Logan 26:01 Yeah, yeah. I am. We actually, in the last year, been working on certifying our business, because, like, there's some contracts that you're more likely to get if you're certified women-owned business or things like that. But like, I got to, like, look for some of these contracts, like websites for that, and it is insane how many, like, how many government contracts are wanting to use, like, they're like, we need like, like, the military is like, hey, we have a ton of people who want to do the military, and they are not in shape. So the military is looking for Pilates instructors or trainers or nutritionists to just help them with this problem they have. And like the truth is, is that most of us don't know these things exist, and we're the ones who's got the passion.Matthew Lesko 26:47 Let me show you the best place for that. Now you could use what I just gave you, and they would help you. There's a better place. Lesley Logan 29:09 All right, Matthew, because you just gave us, and this is really great, but I actually do think that, like, do you have a group or a place that people can get ongoing help? Because obviously you're not a recurring guest here, so they can re-listen to this episode for those, like, really amazing mantras you've given us. But like, how else can they get, can they work with you?Matthew Lesko 29:40 A survey that, it took me many years to figure out how I could create income. I like paying for my own way, and after people start buying reference books with the computers and website, it took me a while, but and so I started a newsletter, and then what it turned into is a community. So I have a community now of 15,000 people that help each other get these programs. See, and I only charge $20 I didn't want to charge thousands like I did. I want to get the information to people who really need this. Otherwise, helping millionaires become billionaires was really boring. The millionaires aren't much fun. All they care about is money and not much of the heart is there, but people who really need it is more satisfying. So this is only $20 I charge for everything. Unlimited help for $20 because members help. Like today, we'll have four or five Zoom calls with members asking question as taking questions on how they got the money. So you have actually members how they got it, and they share it with you, and it became so profitable I can't really fathom too much is that we give out our own grants. We give out about 40% of all our money goes back to members and grants. So we give out like, $40,000, $70,000 every month back to members. Yeah, and four different kind of grants and, and that's, I mean, I really feel cool. Lesley Logan 31:17 I mean, you're a badass, you're really cool, but you're like, a bad ass. You're like, you're like, it's like, not even Robin Hood, because you're not taking from bad people. You're like, actually, like, good people are paying in to help good people.Matthew Lesko 31:30 Whatever it is. It seems like I thought you had to be Jeff Bezos or his ex-wife or something like that, to be able to do this, to give up, but it is and that's, I never thought I'd be able to do that. And that's really satisfying.Lesley Logan 31:46 Well, this is, I mean, thank you. We're gonna put the links to your group and everything below, because the thing that I think keeps people from being it till they see it is oftentimes the affordability of it. Like they get stuck in that. As a business owner, I have always reinvested in my business, but like the ability to grow it required some capital, because you can't risk the savings account. And the IRS might not go after Jeff Bezos, but he certainly comes after me, so I have to pay my bill, you know, I can't go, oh, it's coming. I just, I'm doing a thing. I tried something new. So it when I had a bank go, hey, here is this with this really, really, mine's not even free money. But you, you're talking about free money. Like, I actually have been able to grow my business, and we haven't touched the money. Just like having it there meant that we could, like, be a little riskier, and it's paying off, you know, so, like, I just so I just know how impactful it's been for me. And, my goodness, if I knew this 10 years ago, like, I think we'd be in a different place. But I'm so grateful I got to meet you today. You have given us so much, some are great talks. But I love to end every episode with bold, executable, intrinsic or targeted steps people can take to be it till they see it. What do you have for us? Matthew Lesko 33:00 Well, I mean is, if you want to do an idea, say, if you want to start a nonprofit, you want to start a business, you want to start a business at your home. You want to be a freelancer. You have an invention to work on, you go to that sba.gov/ and then local if an assistance, and you make an appointment. You make an appointment 1, 2, 3 or whatever, and you have to do that. Everybody wants to fill out an application and wait for the money. You can't do that because you don't know the application to fill out. You got to get experts and talk to experts who help people like you every day. And they're available for free, but they're not in Google. You can't use that. So you go, if it's for professional you go to sba.gov/localassistance. If it's for education or job training, you go to careeronestop.org that's another clearing house, and you put in your zip code to find a counselor to tell you about government money programs to help you train for a better job, so you want to get a skill to make better money, and things like that. They'll help you with that. Okay? And then if you have financial problems, you go to hud, hud.gov/counseling H-U-D for hud.gov/counseling and you put in your zip code there, and you get a free financial counselor sit down and work out your debts, your bills and all that stuff, so you don't carry that burden in the back of your head forever and get that, get that monkey off your back, And they'll do all that for free.Lesley Logan 34:42 Oh, my God. So I have... actually, I love props. I care my props. I have actually leveled up, okay? So in many ways. So I have my three-pound weight and I have my five-pound weight. So in my Pilates class, I finally leveled up because when they say grab your light weights, I went from three pounds to five pounds. 01:26 - Lau (Guest): You're now a heavyweight. 01:28 - Anne (Host): Well... I don't know if it's heavyweight, but now, right, it's a change. I've leveled up, and while it may not seem like a lot over the long haul, guess what? It's going to mean a whole lot. And I thought it was such a great comparison for our businesses and how we can make simple little changes. And those simple little changes over time are going to make an amazing difference. And I even got like excited, and I wrote, "No sacrifice, no success." And then here's my little boot necklace to like kick myself in the butt to remind myself. 02:00 - Lau (Guest): We all need that, Annie, we all need that. 02:02 - Anne (Host): I love that, to do that, yeah. So I've taken some chances with my business, and I have done some things. I've made some changes, some not so small, but they've been coming for a while. In my head, they were small, and over time they evolved into a kind of, maybe, a bigger idea for a bigger vision for my company. And I thought it would be great to just talk about the process because it's not easy to level up. 02:27 - Lau (Guest): Oh, it's no, it's not the most challenging thing you can do. And it's funny how you have the thought, the imagination, the dream, which has nothing to do with the actual reality of doing it, right? So you're moving through that reality. 02:40 - Anne (Host): I consider the brain, right? My brain steps, my little steps over time, because I've been thinking about how am I evolving, how am I going to level up, how am I going to make these changes? And so in my head, I was making small changes, right? Until finally, I started implementing those small changes, and then kind of as a, I guess maybe a side effect or after effect of those small changes, then I needed to make bigger changes. And so now I have to say that through the process, it's been definitely a learning process, not only for... I like to say I have a clear direction of where I want to go, I know that, but also things have happened that have been, I guess, scary. They've been monumental, like growing challenges for me, but also moments where I've been... Oh, I get it now! 03:31 - Lau (Guest): Yes, let's hear, what are some of those aha discovery moments for you that caught you? 03:31 - Anne (Host): So the aha discovery, right? The aha discovery of evolving your business and always growing, and I'm always talking about that, right? I'm always talking about evolving, and I'm like, "Oh, I got an idea for this, I got an idea for that." I'm a little bit of a serial entrepreneur, but when it comes right down to it, I think that a big aha moment for me was in the process of doing this, is that I've learned a lot about myself, and I've learned where I myself get in my own way, right? I myself get in my own way, right? And I like to think that I don't, and that I'm all confident, and I'm... Yes, we can forge forward and be successful. But yet there's been some times where I'm like, "Well, am I doing the right thing?" And I second-guess myself, and then when I do that, I learn more about myself. Yes, and so it's really been a learning experience about myself and how there are ways in which I hold myself back, and how when it comes to growing your business, the team that you have in place can do a lot to support you. 04:33 - Lau (Guest): Now, before you go on, Annie, I want to know on a scale of one to 10, 10 being the most terrorizing, before you made the move, because a lot of our clients and talent ask us about this, like, "How do I make these really serious and scary moves?" How scared, terrorized, were you at the thought of that kind of change, which is semi-radical, especially when you're working with people for quite a while? How scared were you? 04:59 - Anne (Host): Terrified, terrified. I mean, terrified. It was a 10. It was a 10. Stress level eating, do you know what I mean? 05:05 - Lau (Guest): Well, thank you for being honest, I would agree. 05:07 - Anne (Host): I think it's true. Headache, neck ache. It never gets easier. No, it never gets easier. 05:12 - Lau (Guest): It's always a risk, a huge risk. 05:15 - Anne (Host): And we've talked about this. It's not like uncommon that we've talked about like taking risks and stuff like that. And even before, I was like, "Yeah, we take risks, we're bosses." And this time I took a big risk, and I think that I really challenged myself to take a big risk. And is it completely successful? I don't know yet, you know what I mean? It's evolving. 05:34 - Lau (Guest): And that's the nature of risk. If you knew, it wouldn't be a risk. 05:37 - Anne (Host): Exactly. I mean, I'm evolving with it, I'm growing with it, and I have faith that I'm determined that it will evolve into something successful for me, and so that I have. But the terror along the way has been surprising. 05:53 - Lau (Guest): Yes, yes, because it never gets easier. It never gets better. No, right? It just gets more, higher stakes, and it's funny. The stakes get higher. Yeah, and it's funny, what were the stakes for you this time around? Can you like break it down for the listeners? How did that work? 06:07 - Anne (Host): I'm going to keep going back to here, like right. So we all know my health journey, right? And my health journey took about a year and a half, right? To kind of come to fruition and get the news that, you know, I was not well, healthy, and I needed to do something about it. And then get to work, right? Focus, get to work. And so I was driven. I had a goal. I was driven. I didn't stop until I got to that goal. And then all of a sudden, I got to the goal and I'm like, "Wait, I have more goals." 06:34 - Anne (Host): And so my three-pound weight was always my weight that when the Pilates instructor said, "Go grab your light weights," I said, "Okay, three pounds," right? Three pounds is what? Before it was like one pound, I'm not quite sure if it might've been two pounds. Then I said, "All right, I'm going to graduate to three." But then just this past week I went to a five, and I said, for whatever it was, I had been thinking about it and thinking about it and thinking about it. Similar to my business. Right? I was thinking about the moves, I was stressing, I was nervous, I was like debating, I was researching, I did all the things in my head to evolve, and then finally, I took the leap. And so this past Wednesday, I took the leap, and I went to five pounds. Isn't that great? And it wasn't horrible, and it wasn't horrible. And now I know that there will be days when I'm not going to want to do the five pounds, but I'm going to push myself to do the five pounds. 07:24 - Lau (Guest): You're going to push, but there was something inside of you. 07:26 - Announcer: This is something I think the listeners have to know this. 07:29 - Lau (Guest): There was something inside of you, this little voice, that somehow knew that you could take it on. 07:34 - Anne (Host): And today was the day you could handle it, even though you felt nervous, scared, and with weights, you actually can get hurt, physically hurt, right? 07:44 - Lau (Guest): So of course you're not lifting 150 pounds, but you can still hurt yourself, right? Exactly. Well, let's transfer that now to your business. 07:52 - Anne (Host): Yeah, I mean, and it was funny because I thought about it, thought about it, thought about it, strategized, strategized, said, "Yes, I should. No, I shouldn't. Yes, I should." Today's the day. 08:00 - Lau (Guest): The back and forth, right, Annie? The back and forth. Yes, no. 08:02 - Anne (Host): And then I said, "Today's the day." Today is the day, right? And so literally, that's kind of what happened when I made the decision after I had been thinking about it, researching, going back and forth, "Okay, I'm going to do it," and then I started it, and it was like building a muscle, right? So I'm still in the process of building the muscle of my business and getting through the growth, right? So I'm going to grow my muscle with my five-pound weight. 08:29 - Anne (Host): I'm going to grow my business, right, with my growth strategy, and it's terrifying, it's uncomfortable, right? It's uncomfortable, but there are little successes that I'm seeing along the way, and that makes me happy, and that gives me the confidence to move on and to continue on my journey. And I know in my heart, right, I will make it work for me in the way that it's best. I think the one thing, Lau, which is interesting, is I always have to figure out what's the fallback, right? What's the worst-case scenario, and can I accept the worst-case scenario? 09:02 - Lau (Guest): What is the worst-case scenario? 09:02 - Anne (Host): The worst-case scenario was I'm committed to my growth strategy for a certain amount of time and a large amount of money, to be quite honest with you. 09:09 - Lau (Guest): Well, that's what I was going to say, that you lose a bunch of money that you don't feel you got any return on or any knowledge on. That would be the worst, wouldn't it? Honestly, I can't imagine that happening with you because you're going to squeeze the juice out of everything, but that would be the worst. 09:25 - Anne (Host): The confidence that I have, Lau, and I think that what we've spoken about as well in podcasts before, and I get excited about this, is that I said, "Okay, I have a certain amount of money, I can make a commitment, and I am okay if I lose this money." It's kind of like... it's like gambling. I was just going to say, I don't want to bring up gambling, but I will, because when I go to Vegas, I say, "Okay, I have a certain amount of money. If I decide that I want to gamble..." I don't really gamble a whole lot, like my gambling money is maybe 20 bucks, just to have fun. 09:51 - Lau (Guest): I don't either. 09:51 - Anne (Host): Because I'd rather spend my money on something that I know I'm getting. Like I'm getting a nice facial or a massage. 09:55 - Lau (Guest): I do too, I know. Or dinner. But doesn't that make it harder for you to make those moves because you're not a gambler? 10:05 - Anne (Host): Well, I'm not a gambler, let's say, in Vegas, but I am a gambler with my business in a lot of ways, because I know that if I don't, I will be worse off. If I do not grow, and I've said this before, stagnancy is the death of me. If I do not grow, that is the worst. And I think what was happening is I was at a place where I didn't feel like I was growing anymore, and I wanted to continue the growth. And I'm like, "How can I grow? How can I get more clients? How can I reach these clients?" And when I really researched the answers, it wasn't within my own industry, because I had my own circle already built, which was amazing, and I love my circle. I'm not giving up my circle, but I needed to get beyond the circle to bring in new people, to bring in, right, new clients, and that was, I mean, really, how was I going to reach those clients? 10:54 - Lau (Guest): So what does that translate to for you in terms of this last move that you just made? I know you can't get into too many details before your launch of it, but what did that translate to you in terms of the team you had and were working with, the new team you wanted to be working with, and the new concept that you had moving forward? What were the action steps that you really had to start taking on in order to realize that? 11:22 - Anne (Host): Well, action steps was, first of all, education and research, right, and understanding. And I was actually put in a situation where I needed to get a new team of professionals that could, first of all, handle my website, because the person that I had worked with for many, many years was not able to continue to do that. And so I was looking for more members of the team. And so in doing so, it's hard out there looking for people. I mean, we've discussed this before, like, do they know the industry? Do they not know the industry? What are their skill levels? And, to be honest with you, if people in the voiceover industry knew website development, there are a few people that do, but there's not a lot, right? 12:01 - Anne (Host): So I had to go outside of the industry to look for people that could handle the back end of my websites, because I got a lot going on. I mean, we know that the podcast here, there's a lot of products, there's lots of back-end workings in the website that set up appointments with me, that handle income and inflows and outflows and that sort of thing. So I needed to have someone that was capable in that to take over. And so in doing that was education, research, interviewing, and then also really having a hard look at the budget, because you know, I mean, I have a certain budget. And I think the one thing that sealed it for me—the go, right, the go, and go after thinking and strategizing and education—was having a certain amount of money set aside that I could risk, right, to move forward and know that if it didn't work out, I wasn't confined to a lifetime of it, right, financially or emotionally. I could get out of it if I needed to, right? And what would be the worst thing that could happen? 13:00 - Anne (Host): Well, I would lose that money. So I was just like, if I was going, I have this amount of money that I'm willing to lose, and now I'm ready to gamble. And that's really what it took. And that, just knowing that, having that security and knowing that I had a certain amount of money I was willing to invest and lose completely, completely, if things didn't go the way that I thought they were and I needed to get out, I was okay with that. And so I think that gave me the green light to go ahead and do it. And now, once I'm doing it, right, there's all sorts of like things that are like... I was not anticipating all sorts of obstacles in the path that I did not anticipate. 13:38 - Lau (Guest): Tell us about a few of those obstacles that you ran into. 13:40 - Anne (Host): Well, you know, if you're working with new people, they don't know you, right? They may or may not know your industry. These people did not know my industry, and so they need to be educated so that they can do the best job that they can. The amount of time that I spent educating it's amazing because, you know, I've been in this industry for, I don't know, 17, 18 years, and people that have been working with me have been working with me a long time, so that's a lot of years. Once you work with someone or, you know, you get to know them for that long of time, it's great, because you know the process, you know the industry, you know the person you're working with, you know what they're expecting. When you have new people, it's a whole new relationship, right? And it's like a new client, right, a new voiceover client, where I always loved voiceover because you got in and you got out quick. 14:25 - Anne (Host): A lot of times, yeah, you had a client that kept coming back. You developed a relationship, and typically it was an easy relationship because they've liked what you've done, and they were happy with it, and there was never really, for the most part, you're not having difficult moments within that relationship. This one, I am an owner of my business, right? I need to have it run in a particular way, so it's not like I'm the boss this time, right? Before, my clients, they're the boss, right? I have a skill that I'm providing, and I'm providing audio to them. They like it, they accept it, they pay me. It's great. They come back. Right, they give me new stuff. They like it, they accept it, they pay me. It's great. This, I'm the boss, right? I have to like it, I have to accept it, and I have to say, "This is great. This is moving my business forward." So I have to do a lot of assessment along the way, especially with new people who may not be familiar. 15:12 - Lau (Guest): Now I have a question about that, okay, because we get a lot of questions about this. Folks come in and feel like, "I'm working on a voiceover career or an actor career. If I need to hire people or I need to get a vendor to serve me in a particular service, they come in, they have their expertise. I pay them, they do it." The problem is they're missing the link of how much education and management you have to do when you hire a person, a consultant, a team. It's any person. It is not like, "Here, do my website, and I'm done, and I'll see you in a couple of weeks when it's done," and that's time consuming. Can you take us through, right, can you take us through a little bit of the process of how you are managing this new, brand new team of people who may or may not have the expertise in this industry? How are you managing those people? What does that look like in terms of time and in terms of effort? 16:05 - Anne (Host): Oh, it's a lot, it's a lot of time, it's a lot. It's more time than I anticipated, and I forgot. I mean, because I had gotten almost complacent because people knew me so well, right? I mean, and so now I have to educate new people, a new team, on how I want my business to move forward and who I am and certain things that I expect. And so the amount of time that was required, I did not anticipate. I thought it would be easy, but it's not. And it's interesting because it kind of brought me back to, you know, you think things are just automated and my web girl, I've worked with her for 15 years, she knows me, she knows exactly like what I love, she knows if I say I need something on my website, she could do it. I didn't have to like micromanage at all. Now, all of a sudden, right, there's a lot of time spent educating the new team on, "Here's the practices and the procedures. And this is the way that I like it, because I'm the boss, right?" That amount of time that I'm managing, and I don't like to micromanage. What I like to do is educate enough so that I can say, "Go be creative, do it." It's so funny because, no matter what they do for you, right, they have to know who you are and your brand in order to be able to help you grow your business further. 17:17 - Anne (Host): And I literally went to the boot. Again, I go back to the boot, but I went shopping yesterday. I had a gift card to spend it at this Western store, and I got a cowboy hat. I got a cowboy hat, it's really cool. And the guy branded it for me on the inside of it, and I said, "Well, I love branding." Right, I love branding. "Let's do my initials AG." You know, that's like my website, it's everything. So he has the branding AG. And then I said, "Oh, I like those stars. I'm a star, make me a star." And the way he branded me, he floured it. Like every time he put that branding iron on the hat and he picked it up, it was branded. It was like a big flourish. And I'm like, "I don't care what you do or how many stars you put on it, you're creative. He's like, 'Oh, I'm a creative person, you do your thing, I trust you. You can put as many stars on there as you want, but I'm a star.'" So he's like, "Okay." So I let him like creatively flourish with my brand. But I gave him the specs on, "Here's my AG brand, and I need it to look like this. But now you can flourish and enhance the brand." 18:15 - Anne (Host): It's kind of what I'm doing with my business, right? I'm allowing people to do what they're good at, and that's a big thing. Like to kind of give up the control to allow the people who are experts in what they do, like I'm not a graphic expert, right? I need a graphic expert to create beautiful graphics for my website or a beautiful graphic for my social media, and so that's what they do, right? So I'm like, "Here, here's my guidelines, here's the brand, here's what it looks like for the most part, but put your creative flourish on it," and I love that. That's how I want to be able to manage people. I want to be able to have people that I can say, "Here, here's your baseline, your guidelines for the business. This is how I need it to sound, this is how I want to be represented. Go ahead, put your creative flourish on it." 18:58 - Lau (Guest): Do you feel like, Annie, especially if it's a company that has never worked with someone like you or someone like this brand or even in the genre of the business, do you feel like you can trust them to go off and create? Because there are so many questions that come up about the products and services themselves, do you feel like you can sort of take that step away, or do you feel like in the first couple months you don't? 19:23 - Anne (Host): I do need to be on top of the matter for the first couple, because I, yes, and that's what I'm finding, is that I do have to say, "No, this isn't quite what I need. Let's make adjustments," and they need to be willing to make adjustments while they get to know. It's a mutual, we need to get to know each other. 19:38 - Lau (Guest): Okay, so I have a question about that. How do you determine—this is a common question of all of our talent and clients—how do you determine how to bank hours according to what you're paying your marketing team to bank hours in order to educate, collaborate, go back and forth? How do you negotiate that with your company, not really knowing how much time they're going to need to figure it out? 20:06 - Anne (Host): Well, honestly, like, no sacrifice, no success, right? I am sacrificing a lot of my hours to do all the checking and then making the corrections and saying, "No, this, not this, this." And so for me, it's a sacrifice, right? It's a sacrifice of my time. I have to make sure I allocate time to be able to do that to educate them. But the better I can educate them right in the beginning, the less time I'm going to have to spend later on. That's the way I feel, and the easier it'll be for them to get to know me. I don't think that there's any lack of content about me out there, so, like there's lots of help if people need to know who is Ann Ganguzza. 20:43 - Lau (Guest): But the question is that a lot of people are going to be wondering is what if they want to hire a marketing team? What if they want to have a marketing consultant, right, working on? How do they know how much that investment will be, not just time but money, how much that investment will be based on the kind of education and back and forth that they will need to do with that team? Even if they're in the industry, they're still going to need to do it. 21:07 - Anne (Host): Yeah, it's probably more than you anticipate. You think that you can just say, "Here, create a graphic," or "Make my website." But there's so much that, again, because we are personal brands out there, right, in this industry. We are personal brands, brands out there, right? In this industry, we are personal brands. There's so much of us that is invested in representation and what we look like, what we sound like, how we're being sold, right? There's so much of us that, if we are not able to educate a team on who we are, right, and how we need to be represented, right, you need to be able to allocate that time. So the way that it's working with my team is that services are rendered. I mean, I don't pay for every version of a graphic. They basically do it until it's right, and that's how that works. I pay a blanket fee. 21:53 - Lau (Guest): Do they give you an amount of hours that they're willing to budget in for the month? 21:55 - Anne (Host): Nope, nope, that's great. There's no, yeah, there's no, not in a contract, let's put it that way. And so that was something that actually it's a really great question, because that was something that I wanted to make sure of. I mean, when we went back, right, "Here's what I need. I need to have this, this, this and this. Are you able to provide that, right, and are you able to provide revisions, right, without additional charges?" There's no charges. I'm paying a retainer fee, and so there are no, at least in the contract. There are not, right. There are not. There is a statement of work. There are timeframes. So if I need this to be done on my website, I should expect it to take this long. 22:40 - Lau (Guest): Right. Now, I have a question about that, Annie. If they're doing socials, which they're engaging in SEO, but also an engagement for you, right? They're doing socials in terms of engagement, they're doing graphics. 22:52 - Anne (Host): They're doing some graphics. They're doing graphics. 22:55 - Lau (Guest): But do they actually go on and engage in your voice? 22:57 - Anne (Host): I'm engaging right now. Okay, the question is, though, for people who need help, they would. They would. 23:02 - Lau (Guest): Well, that's the question I have. 23:03 - Anne (Host): If I wanted them to, they would, but I want to engage with the people as long as I have the time. I want to be able. The initial like impression of me and then if there are comments or questions, I like to engage for now, until there are some questions that they can handle on my behalf. But I don't want to misrepresent or people to think that, "Oh, somebody besides Ann is answering." For the most part, I'm interacting with any engagement that happens. They just need to provide the initial wow for the engagement. 23:37 - Lau (Guest): I got you. I got you. 23:38 - Anne (Host): But they would. They said they would, and I actually... We never actually went into that, because that's not what I'm having them do right now. I'm more concerned with them getting the website SEO going, doing some SEO work. They're doing a lot of SEO work for me, which, again, I wanted to be able to expand my reach and to be found outside of the circle that I was in already. 23:57 - Anne (Host): So that requires a lot of keywords. It requires a lot of going back to content that I've produced, creating new graphics for it, creating new titles, creating new words, you know, new content, new descriptions. And so, for the most part, I am approving all of that, and if it needs to go back to the drawing board, I basically correct it and say, "No, let's do this, let's do that." Again, I'll say, "I would never have said this, right, or I would never say this. This is not the proper terminology for this industry." So that's the one thing is that they don't necessarily know the terminology in the industry, nor do they know like, graphically, like, what microphone should I represent? Like, no, do not put a dynamic microphone. 24:39 - Lau (Guest): So you're doing that kind of team, and it's good for our listeners to just know, like, why are you doing this when you could do it yourself? But the expertise of an ad team like this is not only graphics and graphic design, but it's also how to reach your target markets. 24:57 - Anne (Host): Yes, and a different perspective, Lau. That's the other thing that I want to say is, the biggest benefit of this is it's great to have people in the industry, and I still have people in the industry that are doing work for me, but also having a perspective that's outside of the industry, because, again, I need to get outside of the bubble that I'm in, right? And so how do I do that without a different perspective? Right, I want to attract corporate clients. Right, I want to attract corporate clients for my voiceover. How am I going to do that if they're not in my circles already? Right, how am I going to reach outside? 25:28 - Anne (Host): And so a lot of it was to have somebody that does that for all industries to be able to do that for me, and then also, basically, to give me the perspective, like, so that I don't get in my own way, because I've literally had to say, like, "Do you think you should put my face on that graphic right now?" 25:47 - Anne (Host): "Because doesn't that seem too assuming, you know?" And I get all like, here I am getting in my own way, and they're like, "No, no, no, no, because at this stage of the sales funnel, right, they don't know you yet, and so you need to represent your face in that confident way, blah, blah, blah, blah. Later on down in the sales funnel, when they know you, then you don't have to repeat that." So they're experts in that, and basically there's a lot that I'm learning from them, and they're learning a lot about the industry from me. And we're collaborating, and that's the one thing that I do like is that it's in a very collaborative sort of way, and it wasn't without many interviews, by the way, and what's cool about that is they become... 26:31 - Lau (Guest): Yes, you're educating them about the industry and how they need, and people are going to be seeing and thinking about you that are not esoteric, they're not in the industry, they're people that are in the universe. Corporate people, people who might hire me for a voiceover. Yeah, I just want to say, though, that that is a perspective that we all lose along the way. 26:53 - Anne (Host): We do. 26:54 - Lau (Guest): Because we get so involved in the audience that we're currently with, we think everyone is like that. Everyone sees it that way, when really it can be quite opposite to that, that they see you as something totally different than what you think they're seeing you as. 27:07 - Anne (Host): Yeah, and that was the biggest education for me and the biggest takeaway is that it's a growth experience. 27:15 - Anne (Host): Growth is not always fun. Growth is not always fun, growth is not always easy, but growth is to me a sign of moving ahead and moving forward. And so, as long as I can accept that, and I can accept the beatings along the way and the discomfort, and the discomfort, you know, you've got your triumphs and celebrations and exciting moments, but you also have, yeah, you got to work that out. 27:37 - Anne (Host): Work out my stress, work out my stress. I love it. But it's all good, guys, and bosses. I guess this whole discussion today was like really small steps can really mean large growth for you in the long term. And for me, it was a bunch of tiny steps in my head, and then it was just kind of a leap of faith, right, once I said, "What's the worst that could happen?" 27:57 - Anne (Host): Right, I have accepted the worst thing that could happen. And I remember that's so funny, Lau, because in the beginning of time, I feel like in the beginning of time when I graduated college, right, a thousand years ago, a thousand years ago, when I graduated college and I was trying to determine whether I should accept a job in New Jersey, right? Should I move my young butt to New Jersey in a place that I didn't know anybody, all by myself, right, and work for this company? And I said, "You know what? It's scary, but I'll give it a year, and if it doesn't work out in a year, guess what? I can move home." The worst thing is, I don't like it and I move home. 28:31 - Anne (Host): So I did the same thing with my business, and I'll tell you what, Lau, it really puts things in perspective. I said, "Okay, I have a certain amount of money that I can lose, that I'm going to invest, I can lose it, and I'm okay with that, as long as I grow along the way. And if I grow along the way, I have such an education." To me, I'm like, "This is great, now I can move forward." 28:50 - Lau (Guest): I'm with you, totally, I'm with you. Now, one more question: To the people who are not leveling up quite in that way. Maybe they're in an early stage, earlier stage. They say, "I need this, I love this, and I want this, but I don't know if I have the extra money, I don't know if I have the extra capital for this." What do you say to those people that are a little bit tighter on budget, a little bit more worried about paying the rent, a little bit earlier in the game, or maybe they're not, maybe they've been in it for 10, 15 years, but they're still worried about the tight purse strings? What do you say about that? 29:21 - Anne (Host): Well, okay. So tight purse strings are one thing, right? I mean, you either do what you have to do to get the money. You put it in savings, you save for as long, earn it. 29:29 - Lau (Guest): Yeah, you work at Dunkin' Donuts. You know what I mean? Beg, borrow, steal it, as we used to say. Make me my iced coffee at Dunkin' Donuts. 29:35 - Anne (Host): You do whatever you do and you put it away, and then you say, "I've got this amount of money to invest." 29:40 - Lau (Guest): That's if you actually need the cash, right? Yeah. 29:42 - Anne (Host): And if it's not just cash and you just don't want to work, do you know what I mean? Like educate yourself. Like spend the money, invest the money in yourself. If you don't have money, it's time. 29:55 - Lau (Guest): Right. Beg, borrow, steal, right? Don't. I think you're also saying one really important work ethic thing that's a bottom line too, is you got to work harder? 30:00 - Anne (Host): Not only smarter. 30:02 - Lau (Guest): You got to work harder. I don't know why people threw that out the window. "Work smarter, not harder." Well, you kind of have to do both. 30:09 - Anne (Host): You have to do both. You have to work hard and work smart, right? Yeah, you do, and that's actually, I love that you said that. You really do. I mean, people know that I work. I mean, I'm just, I'm working extra hours right now. 30:19 - Lau (Guest): I'm not calling you a slob, but you're a grinder. You know what I mean? You are a grinder. 30:24 - Anne (Host): I always have been, but more so than I really want to. But my ultimate goal is so that I'm not going to have to work so hard in the future. Right? And again, if I were stagnant, right, and I just got kind of complacent, then that's almost worse. 30:37 - Lau (Guest): Yeah, but I know you. I know you. I don't think you're ever going to retire. You're not the type. You'll be on the phone at 98 going, "Wait a second, are you saying this?" I mean, you do have too much love and passion for everything that you're doing, and you know that's what really drives us at the end of the day. It's fun, there's got to be a fun factor. 30:55 - Anne (Host): Well, I think it's like a game. It's a game I play, you know, in a way. 30:59 - Lau (Guest): I mean, there's strategy, you want to win. Exactly, it's a very creative game for me. 31:05 - Anne (Host): So I think that, bosses, we all have to play that creative game. We all have to not just want to win at our performance and be in the booth and do a great job, but also win at our businesses and play the game. I mean, play the game. It's not a bad game to play, it's a fun game if you allow it to be, right, even though I'm telling you, I have discomfort, I'm stressed, but I enjoy the journey. 31:27 - Lau (Guest): I enjoy the journey. And remember what makes it successful, Annie, is that you're the designer of the game. Yes, you get to not only play the game, you get to design it. So don't lose out on the design element. That's the beautiful thing about it, right? 31:37 - Anne (Host): We're designing our own game. 31:39 - Lau (Guest): Our businesses are similar in the industry, but they couldn't be more different in the way they're designed and executed, and that's the beauty of what we do as creatives.
