David Yeager: 10 to 25 David Yeager is a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin and the cofounder of the Texas Behavioral Science and Policy Institute. He is best known for his research conducted with Carol Dweck, Angela Duckworth, and Greg Walton on short but powerful interventions that influence adolescent behaviors such as motivation, engagement, healthy eating, bullying, stress, mental health, and more. He is the author of 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People (Amazon, Bookshop)*. Older generations have been complaining about younger generations for all of recorded history. Today is no different, and I often hear how leaders are struggling with motivating their younger employees. In this conversation, David and I explore the most recent research and practice for what actually works. Key Points Older generations have been complaining about younger generations for all of recorded history. Often, our complaints are the result of our own past experiences. Many leaders experience the mentor's dilemma: being nice and putting up with poor performance, or being critical and demanding higher performance. Status and respect for a young person are as critical as food and sleep to a baby. When satisfied, they can open up much better motivation and behavior. The mentor mindset embraces both high standards and high support for the young person you wish to motivate. Because this is a mindset, you can absolutely get better at it. When giving feedback to a young person, acknowledge the high standard you are setting and also tell the young person that you believe they can meet that standard. Young people have often experienced a lot of “enforcing” behavior from parents, teachers, and coaches. They assume this in the workplace if you don't make a point to say otherwise. A multi-year megadrought in the Western U.S. has claimed untold populations of wild plants. Amid the conditions, some have survived. Scientists have produced a stunningly complete picture about how populations of one particular flower – the scarlet monkeyflower – made it through. In a new study published in the journal Science, a team of scientists spent decades studying and sampling select populations of scarlet monkeyflowers in California and Oregon. Through genetic sequencing, the team discovered that the populations that did best went through genetic changes in a short time period. This is known as rapid evolution. The team found that three of the populations that recovered the BEST adapted their stomata to open less, so they could conserve more water. Stomata act like a plant's pores, managing gas exchange and water loss. This allowed the scarlet monkeyflowers to hunker down in the drought and survive. Interested in more stories about rapid evolution? From the book: "The idea of Dispersal is one where the sheer scale and scope of life’s future extension into the solar system profoundly changes things: not because of some new (and unlikely) cultural enlightenment from within but because of what the enormous expanse of space will do to dilute and change our species and all others.” Adam Frank says of the book, “If we can make it through the many crises of the next century, then the Solar System and the stars beyond await us. In The Giant Leap, Caleb Scharf demonstrates how becoming a true space-faring species is more than just humanity’s future.” Discover more at: https://www.planetary.org/planetary-radio/book-club-caleb-scharfSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

West, author of Endowed by Our Creator: The Bible, Science, and the Battle for America's Soul. Marking America's 250th anniversary, they unpack the Declaration of Independence's timeless truths—that all men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—rooted in biblical principles, natural law, and the founders' belief in objective morality. West reveals how these "self-evident" ideas made America a unique creed-based nation and why surveys show most Americans today misunderstand or reject their divine source. The discussion contrasts the American founding with the French Revolution's utopian failures, then traces how 19th-century Darwinian evolution undermined human equality, objective morality, human exceptionalism, and consent-based government—fueling racism, eugenics, moral relativism, and technocratic rule. Yet West offers hope: modern science increasingly reaffirms a Creator, human dignity, and the Declaration's core truths. Essential viewing for anyone passionate about America's founding principles, liberty, virtue, and the future of the nation. Get the book now! "Endowed by Our Creator" by John G. On Day 5 of The Anchor of Now, we explore the emotional arc of Nurture. Often, when we worry about the future, we treat ourselves harshly, as if we can "scare" our way into being prepared. Today, we return to the Muladhara (Root) Chakra with a softer lens. By combining the science of the Vagus nerve with Eckhart Tolle's wisdom on "Being," we learn that the most productive thing we can do for our future is to deeply nurture our present state. In today's episode: Science: How the Vagus nerve acts as the body's internal "nurturer." Insight: Why your "Being" is more important than your "Doing." Practice: A soothing visualization to wrap your awareness in comfort and safety. This is day 5 of a 7-day meditation series, "Overcoming Future Anxiety: The Power of Now," episodes 3479-3485. From Kevlar to windshield wipers, pulsars to dark matter and radioactivity, women are responsible for countless scientific discoveries and inventions that changed the world — and yet, many of them remain overlooked, forgotten, or ignored. On this episode, we shine a light on some of these women and hear about the detective work required to unearth their lives and legacies; chasing clues, rifling through dusty boxes, and hitting plenty of dead ends. We rediscover the life and work of Katharine Burr Blodgett, a physicist and chemist whose seminal inventions are still in use today. We hear about what it was like being one of the few female engineers working at NASA in the 1970s, and we talk with quantum physicist Shohini Ghose about some of the brilliant women who helped us decode the mysteries of the universe.SHOW NOTES: Journalist Katie Hafner was on a mission — to uncover the details of physicist and chemist Katharine Burr Blodgett's work and life. But so much of Blodgett's correspondence and laboratory notes were missing — it felt like doing a puzzle with so many missing pieces. We listen to an excerpt from “Layers of Brilliance” a documentary podcast from Lost Women of Science about the life of Katharine Burr Blodgett.  From the time she was a kid, Candy Vallado had a singular ambition: to work in aerospace. But when she graduated college in 1968, she quickly discovered that no one wanted to hire a “woman engineer.”  We talk with Vallado about what led her to joining her first NASA mission, some of the sexism she faced, and how she feels, looking back, about the progress of women in STEM. We talk with quantum physicist Shohini Ghose about some of the brilliant, forgotten women who helped us decode the mysteries of the universe. Ghose's book is “Her Space, Her Time: How Trailblazing Women Scientists Decoded the Hidden Universe."

This is a Vintage episode from 2007Why This Episode MattersIf you've ever wondered why some salmon, oysters, or tomatoes taste better than others, this episode gets into the reasons.Jon Rowley explains how better fish handling changed the reputation of Copper River salmon. He breaks down why oysters pair well with only certain wines and how American oyster culture faded and returned. The conversation also explores compost, soil health, and its impact on flavorThe big idea here is simple: great flavor starts long before food reaches the plate. The BanterMark and Francis open with a conversation about the rise of “under the radar” bars and restaurants in Manhattan: places with no sign, no published number, or a deliberate effort to avoid becoming the next overcrowded hotspot. They talk through the difference between true neighborhood-style discretion and exclusivity used as marketing, with stops at Milk & Honey, Pegu Club, and the Waverly Inn.The ConversationJon Rowley joins the show with the kind of résumé that makes food people pay attention. A former commercial fisherman, Rowley helped develop the fresh market for Copper River salmon. He explains how fish are handled dramatically improves flavor and texture. The conversation then shifts to oysters, where Rowley discusses the Pacific Coast Oyster Wine Competition, finding wines to flatter oysters, and how American oyster culture disappeared and then slowly returned. He also talks about the role oysters play in healthier waterways. In the final segment, Rowley turns from sea to soil. He talks compost, organic matter, and why healthier soil leads to more flavorful produce. It is a wide-ranging conversation, but the theme is consistent: better food comes from understanding the systems behind it.Time Stamps0:00 – Banter: the appeal and limits of “under the radar” bars and restaurants8:25 – Jon Rowley joins: fisherman, oyster expert, and advocate for better flavor9:40 – How Copper River salmon went from canned commodity to prized fresh fish12:20 – The ideal fish-handling process16:00 – Oysters and wine: what actually works and why19:40 – The return of oyster culture in America22:20 – Clean water matters for oysters and for their ecosystems 25:15 – Mulling over compost: why soil health changes the flavor of produceGuest BioJon Rowley was a food consultant known for elevating the way chefs and consumers think about flavor. They burned the books. They buried the technology. They made sure you'd never know what humanity was truly capable of. In this explosive conversation, Aubrey Marcus and electromagnetic researcher Ken Sperry pull back the curtain on the greatest scientific cover-up in modern history. This forgotten science could change everything. "We have these physical bodies, we're in this physical world matter. But even science will tell us that this is all just vibrating and nothing is actually solid," Sperry explains, unraveling a thread that connects ancient architecture to free energy, the human heart to cosmic fields, and consciousness to the very fabric of existence. From Nikola Tesla's suppressed technologies to the mysterious Tartarian civilization, from the heart as a vortex rather than a pump to why our cities were once built as healing antennas, this conversation reveals what happens when you start asking the questions they don't want you to ask. "If we really grasp what all of that is, well, then it puts the power back into our hands," Sperry declares. As Aubrey puts it: "We're participants in the immanence, meaning the manifest reality of the transcendent God." This is a roadmap for reclaiming your energetic sovereignty in a world designed to keep you disconnected. Humanity is going back to the Moon, and Europe is already playing a critical role in making it happen. This week, Planetary Radio brings you voices straight from the 18th European Space Conference in Brussels, Belgium, where more than 2,000 of the world’s top space leaders gathered to shape the future of European space exploration. We begin with conference co-organizer Tomas Dimitrov of Logos and Business Bridge Europe, who sets the stage for the conversations ahead. From there, we hear from European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, French Minister Delegate for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad, and Germany’s Federal Space Minister Dorothee Bär. We also take you inside the Moonlight Initiative panel, bringing you the full conversation as scientists and engineers from ESA, NASA, and industry lay out their vision for building GPS and communications infrastructure around the Moon, and wrestle with what it will really take to support a permanent human presence there. Then, Planetary Society Chief Scientist Bruce Betts joins us for What’s Up to tackle one of the most fascinating and unexpected challenges of lunar exploration: what time is it on the Moon? India is revolutionising its approach to space exploration. Science journalist Alok Jha follows preparations for the country's first human spaceflight mission. For decades, India focused its space programme on limited, inexpensive projects directly benefiting its citizens, such as weather satellites and communications networks. Now, the most ambitious mission yet is underway: India will send humans into space. Alok Jha speaks to people at the heart of this radical shift to understand how it's happening and what's driving it. Dr Madhavan Nair, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) takes us inside the room where it all began, a high-stakes one-to-one meeting with the prime minister of the time. We relive tense moments of ISRO's famous Mars mission with its Science Director, Dr Seetha Somasundaram. Indian-American astronaut Anil Menon counts down to his own launch. We visit India's leading rocket company to witness a start-up boom.

What if a glowing pyramid sitting in your living room could restructure your biology, compress decades of meditation into minutes, and shift your brain into an altered state without drugs, breathwork, or effort? He has written five books on health, consciousness, and human performance, and serves as the driving force behind The Light System, a technology now joined with the Gaia Network. Shurka has spent years documenting firsthand results from people around the world, making him one of the most credible independent voices on emerging light-based healing technologies. Dave Asprey and Jason Shurka break down exactly how The Light System uses full spectrum biophotonic light and encoded affirmations to create a coherent energy field that the body synchronizes with at a cellular level. They explore how this technology targets the molecular structure of water in your body, increases cellular electrical conductivity by up to 80 percent in under an hour, and creates the conditions your mitochondria need to produce more energy, accelerate recovery, and trigger deep self healing. You will learn why your body is already a light based organism, how biophotons drive biological communication at the cellular level, and why the geometry of a pyramid amplifies these effects in ways that flat screen technology cannot replicate. They also dig into the nature of consciousness, the ego as a biological operating system, and why the most powerful biohacking interventions are often the ones that work below the threshold of conscious awareness. You will Learn: Why cellular electrical conductivity increases by 80 percent after one hour of exposure to The Light System How encoded light affirmations restructure the molecular formation of water in your body without conscious effort What biophotons are and why your mitochondria, gut bacteria, and DNA are already producing and receiving them How full spectrum visible light maps directly onto the body's energy centers and organ systems Why the metamatrix font used in The Light System produces stronger biological effects than standard text How this technology was invented by a programmer combining transcendental meditation with software development What happens to your brain state when you stare at encoded light and why it resembles deep meditation without the effort How geometry, specifically the pyramid shape, amplifies photonic output and room coverage Why altered states accessed through light may be one of the most underexplored frontiers in brain optimization and neuroplasticity How to use The Light System for sleep optimization, pain relief, and cellular recovery Thank you to our sponsors!
