Achievable contentment isn't found by relentlessly chasing some massive, shimmering happiness jackpot; it's a series of practical keys you turn every day. A proven factor in unlocking a satisfying life is to prioritize experiences that warm the soul and provide comfort, whether it's savoring small positive moments or a rich life encounter, which beautifully illustrates that true wealth is found in connection and meaning, rather than buying a better widget. To explore the happiness factor, Harvesting Happiness Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with a former Facebook executive turned comedian and podcast host, Paul Ollinger. Paul shares thought-provoking excerpts from the interviews that fueled his book, Reasonably Happy: Essays on Money, Work and Other Things that Piss Me Off. Welcome to a transformative practice that gently guides you toward unshakeable joy. This session beautifully weaves together the enduring strength of Stoic wisdom—the liberating truth that your inner peace is completely within your control—with the profound power of connection. We begin by setting an intention using a beautiful, grounding mudra , a silent commitment held in your hands. From this centered space, we turn our awareness toward a deeply cherished loved one. We're not seeking attachment; we're practicing the pure, vivid appreciation of their unique beauty. This focused gaze transforms simple love into a powerful, internal source of happiness and gratitude that the external world can never diminish. Step into this moment and discover how virtue, presence, and love create the most resilient happiness of all. ALL ABOUT THIS WEEK'S SERIES Welcome to "The Path to Happiness with the Stoics." Welcome to a new journey on the Daily Meditation Podcast. This week, we are walking The Path to Happiness with the Stoics. When we think of "Stoicism," we often imagine a stiff upper lip or the suppression of emotion. But the ancient Stoics—thinkers like Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus—were actually in pursuit of profound joy. They didn't seek the fleeting happiness of a sugar rush or a new purchase; they sought Eudaimonia (flourishing) and Ataraxia (unshakable tranquility). This is day 4 of a 7-day meditation series, "The Path to Happiness with the Stoics," episodes 1164-1170. Prepare to shift your perspective. Happiness is not something you chase; it is something you practice. YOUR WEEKLY CHALLENGE: "The Control Test" This week, your challenge is to apply the "Control Test" to every moment of friction or anxiety you encounter. Whenever you feel stress rising, pause immediately and ask yourself: "Is this 100% within my control?" If the answer is no, practice visualizing yourself physically dropping the weight of that outcome, redirecting your energy solely toward your own attitude and response. “Our longings are much more powerful than our logic, and our desires are stronger than our reason.” (Graham Tomlin on the thought of Blaise Pascal)The Rt. Rev. Dr. Graham Tomlin (St. Mellitus College, the Centre for Cultural Witness) joins Evan Rosa for a sweeping exploration of Blaise Pascal—the 17th-century mathematician, scientist, philosopher, and theologian whose insights into human nature remain strikingly relevant. Tomlin traces Pascal's life of brilliance and illness, his tension between scientific acclaim and radical devotion, and his deep engagement with Descartes, Montaigne, and Augustine. The conversation moves through Pascal's analysis of self-deception, his critique of rationalism and skepticism, the transformative Night of Fire, his compassion for the poor, and the wager's misunderstood meaning. Tomlin presents Pascal as a thinker who speaks directly to our distracted age, revealing a humanity marked by greatness, misery, and a desperate longing only grace can satisfy.Episode Highlights“Our longings are much more powerful than our logic, and our desires are stronger than our reason.”“The greatness and the refuse of the universe—that's what we are. We're the greatest thing and also the worst thing.”“If everybody knew what everybody else said about them, there would not be four friends left in the world.”“Only grace can begin to turn that self-oriented nature around and implant in us a desire for God.”“The reason you cannot believe is not because of your reason; it's because of your passions.”Show NotesGraham Tomlin introduces the Night of Fire and Pascal's meditation on “the greatness of the human soul”Evan Rosa frames Pascal as a figure of mystery, mechanics, faith, and modern technological influence.Tomlin contrasts Pascal with Descartes and Montaigne—rationalism vs. skepticism—locating Pascal between their poles.Pascal's awareness of distraction, competition, and “all men naturally hate each other” surfaces early as a key anthropological insight.Evan notes Nietzsche's striking admiration: “his blood runs through my veins.”Tomlin elaborates on Pascal's lifelong tension between scientific achievement and spiritual devotion. The story of the servant discovering the hidden Night of Fire parchment in Pascal's coat lining is recounted.Tomlin reads the core text: “Joy, joy, joy, tears of joy… Let me never be separated from him.”Pascal's distinction: “God of Abraham, God of Isaac, God of Jacob, not of the philosophers.”Discussion of Jansenism, Augustinian anthropology, and the gravity of human fallenness.Tomlin sets the philosophical context: Pascal as a counter to both rationalist optimism and skeptical relativism.Pascal's core tension—grandeur and misery—is presented as the interpretive key to human nature.Quote emerges: “the greatness and the refuse of the universe—that's what we are.”Tomlin describes Pascal's political skepticism and the idea that politics offers only “rules for a madhouse.”Pascal's diagnosis of self-deception: “If everybody knew what everybody else said about them, there would not be four friends left in the world.”Evan raises questions about social hope; Tomlin answers with Pascal's belief that only grace can break self-love.They explore Pascal's critique of distraction and the famous line: “the sole cause of man's unhappiness is that he does not know how to stay quietly in his room.”Tomlin ties this to contemporary digital distraction—“weapons of mass distraction”.The conversation turns to the wager, reframed not as coercion but exposure: unbelief is driven by passions more than reasons.Closing reflections highlight the apologetic project of the Pensées, Pascal's brilliance, and his ongoing relevance.Helpful Links and ReferencesSpecial thanks to the Center for Christian Witness and Seen and Unseen https://www.seenandunseen.com/Blaise Pascal: The Man Who Made the Modern World, by Graham Tomlin https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/graham-tomlin/blaise-pascal/9781399807661/Pensées, by Blaise Pascal https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/18269Provincial Letters, by Blaise Pascal https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/2407Why Being Yourself Is a Bad Idea, by Graham Tomlinhttps://www.amazon.com/Why-Being-Yourself-Bad-Idea/dp/0281087097Montaigne's Essays https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3600Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/23306Augustine's Confessions https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/3296About Graham TomlinGraham Tomlin is a British theologian, writer, and church leader. There is no doubt in my mind that we, as a nation (and, across the world) are facing a moral confusion if not a complete moral crisis. And, unless righteous, bold men step up to the plate, we'll continue to see the moral decay of everything we love from our favorite institutions, to our families, and our neighborhoods, and even the threat of losing this great nation. That isn't hyperbole. Today, I am joined by John Lovell, founder of Warrior Poet Society and former Army Ranger to discuss what we as men can do about it. We talk about mercy and justice (and, how to satisfy both), why we should hate injustice, the dangers of communism and socialism, why we must unite behind Truth (with a capital T), why "happiness" is inferior to "joy," and why we should pursue peace if possible but truth at all costs. 00:00 - Introduction & Catching Up 01:20 - Why John Wrote "The Lions of Mercer" 03:49 - Justice, Fiction, and Catharsis 07:15 - The Cry for Justice 08:07 - Modern Culture and Victimhood 08:51 - Loving the Good vs. Hating the Evil 11:44 - Redemption, Failure, and Public Dogpiling 13:01 - Loyalty, Forgiveness, and Standing by Brothers 16:14 - What Is "The Good"? 18:27 - Justice, Mercy, and the Role of Christ 20:15 - Judgement, Hypocrisy, and Accountability 23:07 - Integrity and Personal Alignment 24:39 - Happiness vs. Joy 26:39 - Teaching Discipline and Long-Term Thinking 27:03 - You Can Only Replicate Who You Are 28:22 - Wrestling With Faith and Christianity 29:02 - The Dangers of Atheism & Moral Relativism 31:05 - America's Moral Foundation 32:42 - Who Decides Morality? 34:12 - Rise of Socialism & Cultural Rejection 35:38 - New York, Ideology, and Consequences 36:36 - Unity vs. Compromise 38:41 - What Makes Someone American? 39:58 - Parenting, Boyhood, and Raising Men 40:45 - Why Boyhood Resurrected Was Written 42:38 - Risk, Adventure, and Rite of Passage 46:14 - Finding Balance in Parenting 47:09 - Trust, Risk, and Leadership in Marriage 51:27 - Why Should Your Wife Trust You? 52:21 - Leadership, Submission, and Marriage Dynamics 55:49 - Biblical Structure for Marriage 59:04 - Loving Leadership and Wise Authority 01:00:54 - Closing Thoughts & Transition to IC Segment 01:01:15 - Where to Find John Lovell 01:02:13 - Q&A Teaser Battle Planners: Pick yours up today! In today's meditation, we draw inspiration from the Stoics, who believed that peace begins within—and that the mind becomes clearer the moment the body softens. This session guides you through a gentle breathing technique designed to melt tension from your shoulders, unclench the jaw, and steady the thoughts. You'll explore how even the ancient Stoics used simple, intentional breaths to return to the present, regulate strong emotions, and create space between stimulus and response. With each inhale, you invite calm; with each exhale, you let go of what you no longer need. Perfect for releasing physical tightness, clearing mental clutter, and grounding yourself in inner resilience. Tune in, breathe deeply, and let the Stoics lead you back to ease. According to the science, it really is better to give than receive. Donating a dollar; sharing a kind word or lending someone a hand changes lives, but can also hugely boost your happiness. So we're teaming up with other podcasts from Hidden Brain to Revisionist History to ask you to give to a charity helping some of the poorest people around. We're calling it #PodsFightPoverty. Go to givedirectly.org/happinesslab right now and give whatever you can. Even a small donation will make you feel good and have a much larger impact on the world than you thought possible. To help inspire you, this special episode examines the science of giving and shares stories of heartwarming and impactful acts of kindness. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What's the difference between happiness and joy—and does Judaism care? In this episode of Weird Being Jewish, Rabbis Matt Reimer, and Jeffrey Weill and Josh Rose discuss whether Jewish practice actually generates joy or just names it. Along the way, they question the American, individualist chase for "happiness" and weigh it against a communal, ethical frame. You'll hear a sukkah open-house story, a meteor-shower moment that turns into a lesson about craving, and a spirited back-and-forth over aligning with "the Ultimate" versus focusing on doing the mitzvot right now—inviting guests, visiting the sick, making time for people. No neat answers, but sharp debate and practical takeaways: joy tends to show up where there's community, rhythm, and responsibility. If you've ever wondered whether the calendar can make you happier—or just more human—this one's for you.

Why Being Hard on Yourself is Killing Your Success(Inspired by Ed Mylett & Neuroscience)1. Your Worst Enemy is You    The Mistake: Negative self-talk like "I'm not good enough" or "I always mess up."    The Science: Self-criticism spikes cortisol (stress hormone), shutting down creativity and problem-solving .    Fix It: Talk to yourself like you would to a best friend. Example:        "I messed up that presentation." → "I'll improve next time. What's one thing I did well?"2. Confidence is a Skill (Not Luck)    The Lie: "Confidence comes from never failing."    The Truth: Confidence comes from preparation.        Golden Rule: For 1 minute on stage, train for 1,000 minutes (Ed's 10,000-hour principle) .        Action: Master one small skill this week (e.g., eye contact, storytelling).3. Name Your "Demons" to Tame Them    Your mind has "voices": The Perfectionist, The Complainer, The Fearful Child.    Strategy:        Notice negative thoughts ("Ugh, I'm so stupid").        Label them: "Ah, there's The Hyper-Critic again."        Thank them: "Thanks for sharing, but I've got this."    Why It Works: Naming emotions reduces their power by 50% (UCLA study) .4. Forgive Faster Than Anyone Else    Stock Traders' Secret: The best forgive mistakes instantly—no dwelling.    Try This:        Drop a glass? "I forgive myself."        Bomb a meeting? "What's the lesson? Onward."    Ed's Hack: "Speed of forgiveness = Speed of success."5. Gratitude Overrides Negativity    1,000 Thank-Yous a Day: Floods your brain with serotonin (joy chemical).    Example:        "Thank you for this coffee."        "Thank you for the traffic—extra podcast time!"    Result: No mental space for self-hate.30-Second Action Plan    Pause: Next time you screw up, say: "I'm human. What's the lesson?"    Label: Identify one negative thought today (e.g., "The Imposter Syndrome").    Gratitude Bomb: Text someone "Thank you for ______." Right now.Key Quote"Self-love isn't earned—it's the baseline. You wouldn't starve a plant for growing crooked. Don't starve your soul for being human."Your Turn: Which "demon" (Perfectionist, Critic, etc.) will you disarm today? Why This Works:    Brain Rewiring: Self-compassion activates the prefrontal cortex (problem-solving) .    Success Proof: Top performers like Joel Bauer and traders use these exact tools.Bonus: Try *"The 5-Second Rule"* (Mel Robbins): When negativity hits, interrupt it by counting *"5-4-3-2-1—STOP."* Then replace it with gratitude.

Following yesterday's focus on external control, Day 2 guides us into the most powerful territory of all: our Inner Commentary. Negative tendencies—like impatience, self-criticism, or resentment—are rarely caused by the event itself, but rather by the instantaneous, faulty judgment we place upon that event. This is day 2 of a 7-day meditation series, "The Path to Happiness with the Stoics," episodes 1164-1170. We kick off our new series, The Path to Happiness with the Stoics, by exploring the absolute foundation of emotional freedom: the distinction between the internal and the external world. So much of our daily exhaustion comes from carrying burdens that were never ours to hold—the unpredictable future, the actions of others, or the natural flow of events. Today, we invite a sense of deep relief into our meditation. We will practice drawing a gentle line in the sand, separating what we can influence from what we must simply witness. This isn't about giving up; it is about focusing your energy where it actually matters. This is day 1 of a 7-day meditation series, "The Path to Happiness with the Stoics," episodes 1164-1170. THIS WEEK'S MEDITATION JOURNEY  Day 1:  Inner Joy Visualization  Day 2:  Affirmation: "I am free." Day 3:  Happiness Breath Day 4:  Lotus mudra to open your heart Day 5:  Fourth Chakra for love and compassion Day 6:  Happiness Flow meditation, combining the week's techniques Day 7:  Weekly review meditation and closure SHARE YOUR MEDITATION JOURNEY WITH YOUR FELLOW MEDITATORS Let's connect and inspire each other! Episode 2816: Nicholas Kraft reflects on the surprising skepticism he and Adam Shell encountered while filming Pursuing Happiness, exploring why some thoughtful, creative individuals believe happiness is overrated, selfish, or even counterproductive. By engaging with these dissenting perspectives, Kraft uncovers deeper insights into fulfillment, arguing that happiness is most powerful when it's a byproduct of meaningful work and service, not the goal itself. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://livehappy.com/is-happiness-important/ Quotes to ponder: "Being happy or wanting to be happy does not make you selfish." "There is practically no limit to the happiness you can create." "Let happiness be the pleasant byproduct of your pursuits, not the pursuit itself."
