As we find out, it's an iconic (and quite unwieldy—1,680 recipes!) text that its author, Ada Boni, originally published in 1929. The book's influence cannot be overstated, and for first-time readers, it gives insight into the foundational Italian cooking that we still see today. Michael shares how he was introduced to the book by Samin Nosrat while editing Salt Fat Acid Heat, which sent him down many dead-end roads toward acquiring it for publication in English. Every year, thousands of children spend Christmas without toys and family meals, some without warm homes and beds, some in a hospital! There are thousands of families that have fallen on hard times whose struggle seems to double during the holidays. That's where we come in! With the funds we raise, we will sponsor as many families as we can, with whatever they may need this holiday season. Whether that's food, clothing, toys and games, appliances, help with the bills…whatever we can do to make their holiday season a little brighter. However, rather than spending money at big corporations that don't need it, we shop local. We spend the money at local "mom and pops" stores - small businesses that are family-owned. We find this works two-fold: We can buy gifts for children in need as well as support small businesses! We are asking all of you to write us letters for someone you know that needs a little help during the holidays. We ask that you provide the name of the family, along with a description of their current situation and what we can do to help. If we select your family and you wish to remain anonymous, we will not disclose who sent us the letter. Once hot, add onion and sauté for 3 minutes.Add carrots, parsnips, and celery and sauté for another 5 minutes. Add garlic, turmeric, and ginger and sauté for 1 minute.Add broth, water, lentils, salt and several grinds of black pepper. Stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes.Remove from heat. Stir in kale, parsley, and lemon juice. Cover and let greens steam for a few minutes. Season to taste (I did another ¼ tsp salt) and enjoy!Turmeric Orange Tea LatteIngredients:2 herbal tea bags (such as ginger tea, orange hibiscus, or herbal tea of choice)6 oz water10–12 ounces plant based milk1 teaspoon ground ginger1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided1 teaspoon whole cloves or 1/4 teaspoonground clovesPinch of nutmeg, optionalOptional pinch of black pepper for turmeric absorbency1/4 cup maple syrup or honeyJuice from 1 medium orangeInstructions:Steep the tea bags in 6 ounces water to ensure a highly concentrated tea.In a small pot, combine 10-12 ounces of coconut or almond milk with ginger, cloves, optional nutmeg, turmeric, pepper, cinnamon, maple syrup, orange juice, and optional coconut oil. Whisk the ingredients together.Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes to allow the spices to infuse and the maple syrup to dissolve. If desired, add vanilla extract and mix well.Strain the mixture to remove the cloves if you used whole cloves.Pour 2-3 ounces of the brewed concentrated tea into a cup.Whisk the golden milk (the mixture in the pot) again to create a frothy texture. Self-compassion reduces our feelings of shame and self-doubt. We explore a practice to help quiet our inner critic with kindness.Summary: What does your inner critic sound like? Many of us carry echoes of past misunderstandings, pressures, or expectations. Voices that show up as shame, self-judgment, or the belief that we're not doing enough. This episode explores a self-compassionate writing practice that helps interrupt those patterns by noticing how we talk to ourselves and learning to respond with more kindness. How To Do This Practice: Choose something you feel ashamed about or critical of: Pick a moment or pattern that brings up self-blame, embarrassment, or disappointment. It doesn't need to be huge, just something that regularly activates your inner critic. Describe the situation honestly and without judgment: Write down what happened and how it made you feel. Let the tone be neutral, like you're simply acknowledging what's true. No harsh labels, no minimizing. Imagine someone who loves you speaking to you: This could be a close friend, mentor, future self, or the voice you'd naturally use when comforting someone you care about. Let that tone guide the rest of the letter. Write to yourself with compassion, acceptance, and understanding: Recognize the difficulty, normalize the feelings, offer reassurance and warmth, acknowledge your strengths and intentions. Treat yourself the way you'd treat someone who came to you hurting. Reframe your struggle in a kinder, more accurate way: Gently question the harsh story you usually tell yourself. Identify what was actually happening beneath the shame— survival instincts, past patterns, symptoms, fear, or overwhelm. Offer yourself a more truthful, generous narrative. Set the letter aside then come back and read it: After a little time (an hour or a day), return to what you wrote. Notice how it feels to receive your own compassion. Let the warmth land. Over time, rereading and rewriting letters like this can shift your inner voice toward kindness and authenticity.
