CPG disruptors have entered just about every legacy category over the past few years in hopes of capturing bored consumers looking for more interesting everyday products.  We've seen this play out across dandruff shampoo, toothpaste and mouth wash, supplements, sunscreen, and, most recently, the allergy aisle.  “We did a ton of consumer work up front, probably too much, pulling research reports, data and our own survey of 600 consumers, and what we realized was that there is a huge experience and efficacy gap,” Loren Lucree, the CEO and founder of 9-month-old allergy-care brand Wizard Wellness, told Glossy. “[We found that] only 7% were loyal to their current solutions, which is bananas. … [The] lesson is nobody's writing love letters to Flonase or Zyrtec.”  Lucree is a beauty industry veteran formulator and executive. His CV includes Unilever and Estée Lauder brands. “One morning I woke up and told my poor husband, ‘I have to do this,' … because somebody else will do it if I don't,” Lucree said. “[I thought], ‘I have this amazing beauty network around me, and now's the time'.” Lucree secured $7 million in funding from True Beauty Ventures, G9 Ventures, Able Partners and The Venture Collective to launch Wizard Wellness via a DTC model in January. The brand is built on a beauty industry playbook, including cleaner ingredients, clear positioning, clinical testing, a dynamic OOH advertising funnel and social-first marketing. Now, just nine months post-launch, Wizard Wellness has entered CVS, Walmart and, as of Monday, Target stores.  Glossy West Coast correspondent Lexy Lebsack sat down with Lucree to learn firsthand how he took on allergy incumbents and what it'll take to become a leader in the space.

Send us Fan MailClinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Shefali joins Skin Anarchy to talk about conscious parenting: why emotional regulation starts with the parent, how mothers pass down beauty standards, and the blueprints for raising sons and daughters.Who is Dr. Shefali?A clinical psychologist and bestselling author who pioneered conscious parenting 16 years ago with her 2010 book The Conscious Parent, blending Western psychology with Eastern philosophy. "Children are undergoing the most acute mental health crisis of modern times, and parents are unknowingly messing it up."Why does emotional regulation start with the parent?Because the trigger is internal, not external. Dr. Shefali says children surface the exact feelings a parent was never allowed to feel in their own childhood. "It's not her who's unhinging me. I am unhinged." Real regulation means building an inner stability a delayed flight or a defiant toddler cannot knock off its axis.What kind of self awareness actually creates change?The kind that admits something must change. Knowing your favorite color is surface level; the harder work is accepting your own imperfection. "Most people don't want to change at that level... they want the other person in their life to change."How do mothers pass down beauty standards to daughters?Often unknowingly, by absorbing a narrow ideal themselves. Dr. Shefali traces it to what she calls "a white, skinny, rich female standard," which mothers internalize and hand down. Daughters absorb it whether or not a parent intends to, which is why she urges mothers to change the script first.How do you prepare a child for racism or comparison?By arming them early, before culture does the damage. She recommends teaching a child directly that people may judge their eyes, skin, or hair, then dismantling it with simple logic. "You begin to arm her... with an awareness that people are going to tell her, you don't look like the standard." She shares her own decades long work to undo an inherited belief that being Indian meant inferior.How should you raise a son?By honoring how boys are wired. Dr. Shefali describes boys as physical creatures who process through action, not words, and who need to feel purposeful. "If you want him to be regulated, let him move... give him a purpose." Unspent energy, she warns, can later erupt as aggression.What are the pillars of raising a conscious son?Seven, anchored by a few essentials: boys express physically, feel as deeply as girls, need purpose, need a male tribe, need guidance into healthy sexuality, and must be held accountable. "If boys learn to be accountable, they will grow up to be accountable men."Why do some cultures prefer sons?Partly biology, partly the lower cost placed on boys. Dr. Shefali notes the pressure many women face, especially in Indian culture, to produce a son. Wanting a boy to the exclusion of a girl, she says, is "a very rigid... primitive way of looking at life," since every seed still needs a female body to nurture it.How do you raise a daughter beyond her looks?By refusing to make appearance her identity. Dr. Shefali coupled her own identity to her looks after years of validation, and deliberately taught her daughter otherwise. "How you look is the least interesting part of you," she tells parents, pointing instead toward kindness, integrity, and hard work.Should we raise boys and girls exactly the same?She favors equity over identical treatment. Boys and girls are profoundly different in wiring, and denying that helps no one. "We should not want to ever be like a man. We should only want to be treated humanly." Before she became Lady London, Zaire Stewart was a fly toddler exploring New York City's unique beauty culture. At just three years old, she was being carted to Dominican hair salons, getting her hair washed and pressed by the same women she still visits today. Her mother kept her dapper in DKNY and Moschino as they traveled between the Bronx and New Jersey. On today's show, host Douglas Haynes speaks with Sasha Waters about her new documentary, Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World, that premiered last week on PBS's American Masters series. The film profiles the life and legacy of one of America's greatest poets who passed away in 2019. Waters says that the film has the structure of a musical, biographical insights interspersed with poetry readings by some of Oliver's greatest fans, including Stephen Colbert and Jason Reynolds. Waters sourced readers, in part, by looking through TikTok videos of people with wild geese tattoos. The numerous readers create a dialog with Oliver's vast catalog of poetry, both well-known and new. Making a documentary about Mary Oliver was a difficult task because Oliver was very private for much of her life. But in her later life, Oliver became more outspoken, making comments about climate change and revealing her childhood sexual abuse.
