Cassandra Herman, LCDC, is a Substance Use Counselor at Positive Recovery whose journey into this field is as inspiring as it is personal. Cassandra's path has taken her from the outdoors of Michigan to radio broadcasting, living abroad and in Shanghai, running in 13 half marathons, and ultimately to the world of addiction recovery. Her deep commitment to faith, family, and personal growth has shaped her perspective, not just as a mother who walked alongside a child struggling with addiction but as a professional who now helps others navigate their own path to healing.  In this episode, host Jamie Demeris sits down with Cassandra to explore the layers of strength and purpose that define her story—the endurance of a marathon runner, the unwavering love of a mother, the clarity of a morning mindset, and the deep belief in faith and positive psychology as tools for transformation. Matt Dawson is a six-time world-record-holding endurance and adventure athlete who, within a twelve-month period, climbed the highest peak on every continent, skied to the South Pole, trekked solo and unsupported across the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, and rowed across the Atlantic Ocean.  Performing in the planet's harshest environments, he learned that his greatest obstacles don't originate in the outside world, but within himself. That life doesn't have to be a relentless battle against his deepest fears and shortcomings. His new book, Strength In Surrender beckons you to embrace a different path and reveals a harrowing truth: one of the greatest acts of courage is surrender. Surrender isn't giving in, giving up, or going along, but rather choosing to face and release our deepest fears in order to identify more productive ways of meeting our needs. It's a powerful, necessary step to living a life of greater purpose.  Takeaways ·      Physical challenges can help in reconnecting with oneself. ·      Disconnection is a common issue in today's society. ·      Facing fears is essential for emotional release. ·      Reality is not as concrete as we believe it to be. ·      We have the power to shape our own reality. ·      Living with purpose is crucial for fulfilment. ·      Emotional pain can lead to significant breakthroughs. ·      The journey to finding purpose can take time. ·      Engaging in physical challenges can foster personal growth. Welcome to episode #966 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Christine Rosen is a thinker whose work boldly interrogates the intersections of history, technology, and culture, and she's someone I've long admired for her incisive intellect. Christine's new book, The Extinction of Experience - Being Human In A Disembodied World, invites us to reflect on what we lose when technology mediates so much of our lives. In this conversation, we unpacked the book's provocative thesis: that the human experiences most fundamental to our identity - face-to-face connection, serendipity, patience, and risk - are at risk of atrophy in an increasingly virtual world. Christine, whose earlier works include Preaching Eugenics, My Fundamentalist Education, The Feminist Dilemma, and Acculturated, takes a nuanced, critical stance on technology. She acknowledges its benefits but urges caution about its unintended consequences. Together, we explore the blurred boundaries between virtual and real, the societal implications of a two-tier care system, and the surprising resurgence of physical community spaces like libraries and malls post-pandemic. Christine's historical perspective, informed by her background as a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and her experience as a columnist for Commentary, lends depth to her argument that we must actively choose to reclaim experiences that ground us in the physical world. She shared insights on how tools like AI might aid healthcare but warned of the risks when they replace human judgment in areas like justice or personal relationships. Her reflections on community, loneliness, and the enduring importance of “third spaces” remind us that connection is essential to our humanity. If you've ever wondered how to balance the convenience of technology with the richness of lived experience, this conversation is a must-listen. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 1:06:40. Greg Putnam, a former Navy SEAL, shares his experience transitioning from the military to cattle ranching. He discusses his time in the SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) unit and the challenges of long-duration dives in small, submersible vehicles. The mental and physical toll of these dives, including the need for breath control and the lack of communication, is highlighted. Greg also talks about the unique camaraderie and mindset required for SDV operations. The conversation touches on the importance of mindset, breath work, and preparation for SEAL missions. Greg Putnam and Kevin Seiff discuss various topics including Greg's experience in the military, his transition to civilian life, and his involvement in cattle ranching. They also touch on the influx of people moving to Montana and the challenges of living in a rural area. Greg shares his journey into ranching and the complexity of the industry. The complexity and capital intensity of the agriculture and ranching business are often underestimated. The business requires a diverse skill set, including accounting and cash flow projections. Similar to the military, the job evolves from operational to administrative and planning. While there are enjoyable aspects, such as being outdoors and working with animals, there is also a significant amount of challenging and mundane work. The key to success is having a genuine passion for the job and being willing to overcome obstacles. Building a strong team and being open to making changes are crucial in the industry. Little Belt Beef focuses on producing high-quality, sustainable beef through a vertically integrated supply chain. Grass-finished beef has a different flavor profile compared to grain-finished beef, with grass-finished beef having a more natural, wild game-like taste. The marbling of beef determines its grade, with higher marbling resulting in a higher grade. Little Belt Beef uses a style of grazing and rotation similar to grass-fed, grass-finished beef but finishes their cattle on grain for the desired fat quality, color, and marbling. The company emphasizes the importance of local supply chains and building a customer base that supports their product. In this recording, Bentinho has a conversation with a woman who's experiencing an acute ankle injury, reflecting on how her physical challenge can serve as an opportunity for her spiritual growth and healing. He emphasizes that these experiences are not random or negative, but rather manifestations of the soul's desire for evolution and balance. He encourages us all to reflect on the message from our Higher Self from such a seeming challenge. The catalyst of a physical injury, which stops us in our tracks, can slow us down so we become aware of where we've been holding onto misaligned and complicated perspectives, whether around doubt, lack, smallness, fear, etc.In this way, we have the opportunity to reroute our thoughts through will and faith into what we truly desire. We are invited to free-fall into faith, which is the simplest path of all. All the seeming complications of life can be replaced by the simplicity of faith, which reduces all of the separations and complications we are attached to into one simple focal point: God._________Follow Bentinho on Social Media:InstagramFacebookYouTubeTwitterTikTok_________Subscribe to the Bentinho Massaro newsletter: bit.ly/3rhVNhs

In this conversation, I interviewed Brandon Wise, who also completed the Calendar Year Triple Crown. We discuss his experience with the Yellow Deli "commune", his motivation for attempting the Calendar Year Triple Crown, and the challenges he faced along the way. We also talk about the social aspect of thru-hiking and the importance of camaraderie on the trail. Support Brandon Weis' book "This is Gonna Hurt" about the Calendar Year Triple Crown: https://amzn.to/3XQzzRT And Follow Brandon on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/naturalhorsepower/?hl=en Overall, the conversation highlights the physical and mental challenges of long-distance hiking and the transformative power of the outdoors. Takeaways The Calendar Year Triple Crown is a challenging feat that requires careful planning and determination. Thru-hiking can be a solitary experience, but the social aspect and camaraderie with other hikers can greatly enhance the journey. Challenges and obstacles are inevitable on a thru-hike, but overcoming them can lead to personal growth and a sense of accomplishment. The Yellow Deli cult experience highlighted the importance of being open-minded and adaptable while on the trail. Writing a book about the thru-hiking experience can be just as challenging as the hike itself. Thru-hiking the Calendar Year Triple Crown involves hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail in a single calendar year. Challenging weather conditions, such as blizzards and freezing temperatures, can be encountered during long-distance hikes. Camaraderie among hikers is a significant aspect of the thru-hiking experience, with shared struggles and bonding over shared experiences. The decision to pursue long-distance hiking instead of other life paths, such as attending law school, can be influenced by the desire for adventure, personal growth, and financial considerations. Future plans for hikers may include pursuing ultra running and international hiking, such as the Great Divide Trail in Canada or the Four Corners loop in the United States. Long-distance hiking offers a unique opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and a deep connection with nature. Sound Bites "You could say the Count of Your Triple Crown saved you a bunch of money." "Yeah, that was one of the weirder nights of my entire life." "I mean, we all had a lot of time and not a lot to do. I just put mine to some good use, I guess." "Humans were strange creatures because, you know, one of my favorite memories of the whole year is something that was pretty awful in the moment and like super miserable but I look back on it now and I can't help but smile every time." "Yeah, the hardest part's starting. You can always quit. It's not a big deal." "Yeah, gotta get my first one. Come on. Spent all my money on thru-hiking. It's the real trick. But it's worth it to spend on the experiences for sure."
