Briar Rose Penney, the steward and CEO of Inner Space KC, exemplifies this philosophy. During today's episode, Briar Rose shared how their unique yoga studio and community space blends wellness, creativity, and collaboration in a way that has not only grown their business but strengthened the bonds between diverse groups in Kansas City.Inner Space KC operates as more than a yoga studio. It's a thriving ecosystem where martial arts, dance, qigong, and tai chi classes meet creativity and collaboration. “We have 12 commercial tenants that rent with us,” Briar Rose explained. “Their rent directly subsidizes our programming and stabilizes our finances. But also, we all kind of would only be here because of each other.” This symbiotic relationship allows the space to host everything from art markets to activism events, creating a vibrant hub where personal care and creativity intersect. One key to this success is Briar Rose's emphasis on building community through intentional care. Volunteers, or “caretakers,” play a vital role in maintaining the space's welcoming atmosphere. “Touch everything—even if it's something that no one is going to notice,” Briar Rose said, underscoring the importance of attention to detail. “The feeling of it being connected with and touched and attended to does translate. People can feel that when they walk in the space.” This meticulous care has contributed to Inner Space KC's remarkable 30% revenue growth over the past year.Briar Rose's approach also underscores the importance of staying true to the values that make a business unique. After a period of trial and error, they found that leaning into their studio's distinct offerings—rather than imitating others—created the consistency and growth they needed. “We had to come back to what was already working and let that show us, ‘Oh, this is how we grow.'”Inner Space KC is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit, marking their second successful foray into alternative funding. Briar Rose emphasized how this approach has opened doors where traditional financing fell short. “Banks really just don't see you,” they said. “The Honeycomb thing was a really cool expansion of my horizon. There are alternative sources of capital out there—you just have to open up to them and look.”By blending business with community-building and creativity, Briar Rose is helping redefine what success can look like. Inner Space KC is proof that fostering connection and care can lead to both financial growth and meaningful impact.tl;dr:Inner Space KC blends yoga, martial arts, and creativity to foster community and collaboration in Kansas City.Briar Rose Penney embraces volunteers as a cornerstone of Inner Space KC's welcoming, thriving environment.Adaptability and a willingness to pivot have been key to the studio's 30% revenue growth.Alternative crowdfunding has enabled Briar Rose to bypass traditional financing and expand Inner Space KC.By building a business rooted in care, Briar Rose proves that community and profit can coexist. How to Develop Adaptability As a SuperpowerBriar's superpower is adaptability—the ability to pivot, learn, and grow through challenges. They describe this skill as a willingness to “try things and recognize that not everything you try is going to work,” adding, “You really just have to be willing to pivot without drama or ego or blame.” Briar Rose's openness to experimentation and their capacity to let go of rigid ideas have allowed them to navigate the complexities of running Inner Space KC with grace and resilience.Illustrative Story:Briar Rose shared how they initially focused on growing memberships and increasing foot traffic at Inner Space KC, believing this was the key to success. However, the strategy didn't yield consistent results. Instead of doubling down, Briar Rose reflected on what the business truly needed. They realized their community valued the studio's unique, niche offerings rather than uniform programming. By leaning into these strengths, they saw class attendance and memberships grow organically, highlighting the power of adaptability in business.Tips for Developing Adaptability:Embrace Experimentation: Be open to trying new approaches, even if you're unsure of the outcome.Learn from Failure: View setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than reasons for discouragement.Seek Feedback: Surround yourself with peers and mentors who can offer constructive criticism and guidance.Stay Curious: Cultivate a mindset of curiosity to continuously explore new possibilities.Let Go of Ego: Avoid attaching yourself to rigid plans or ideas; be willing to pivot as needed.By following Briar's example and advice, you can make adaptability a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileBriar Rose Penney (they/their):CEO / Steward, Inner Space KCAbout Inner Space KC: Inner Space is a community movement, yoga and healing arts center in midtown Kansas City, MO. When you're using your herbal skills to help others – whether you're doing that as a Clinical Herbalist in private practice, volunteering in your community, or even just caring for your own family – it becomes obvious pretty fast that your herbal knowledge is only part of the skillset you need. You also need to creatively adapt what you know, so that it will actually work in that person's life. Since every body is different, different strategies work for different people. Holistic herbalists are never trying to present “one right way” that everyone has to adhere to.Which means that as herbalists, we need to be creative and flexible. We need to match our strategies to each person's life individually – and that creativity can be challenging! That's one of the skills that we teach in our Clinical Skills course. Today's episode is a segment of content on this topic, from that course, which we wanted to share with you. It's self-contained, but it'll also give you a peek into what our course material sounds like. When we talk to a client, we listen to their health goals and priorities. We also form our own understanding of the case, and our own thoughts about what to prioritize – which herbs and interventions to try first. Here's the thing: their priorities are more important than ours! If we discern some fundamental factor they aren't aware of, it's our job to teach them why it's a priority. It's our job to educate and negotiate – not to dictate.Sometimes we'll propose an idea and the client will be uncertain, or will outright reject it. When this happens, it's not helpful to insist they follow our instructions. That's not the relationship we have as herbalists – we're not doctors, giving “orders”. So when the client expresses some resistance, we respect it. That respect may look like offering more information and context, or it may look like going in another direction entirely. The motto for this mindset is: Support the resistance. It's easier said than done – but learning to do it is something we consider essential to the herbalist's skillset. If this episode caught your attention, then our Clinical Skills course is for you! Learn to practice legally, safely, collaboratively, and effectively. Get all your client forms & scheduling systems sorted. Cultivate consultation interview skills, and explore methods for planning personalized protocols. Everything you need to be a top-notch herbalist!Like all our offerings, this self-paced online video course comes with free access to twice-weekly live Q&A sessions with us, lifetime access to current & future course material, open discussion threads integrated in each lesson, an active student community, study guides, quizzes & capstone assignments, and more!If you have a moment, it would help us a lot if you could subscribe, rate, & review our podcast wherever you listen. When we talk about resilience, too often the conversation stops at “mental grit” or “pushing through.” But the truth is this: resilience isn't about grinding harder. It's about recovery. But in the 21st century, marked by global pandemics, mass caregiving crises, economic instability and high inflation, and unprecedented trauma, this outdated definition no longer serves us. Holistic Resilience reframes resilience as not just surviving adversity but rebuilding from the inside out—biologically, emotionally, financially, socially, and spiritually. It integrates nervous system recovery with identity reinvention, creating a blueprint for sustainable thriving after disruption. It's about rewiring the nervous system after disruption. And for those who have been through trauma, who spend months or years in a state of hypervigilance, this recovery is both urgent and lifesaving. In this episode of the Holistic Wealth podcast, our topic is "What is Holistic Resilience? The New Resilience Frameworks for the 21st Century". Resources Used in This Episode:Holistic Wealth (Expanded and Updated): 36 Life Lessons to Help You Recover from Disruption, Find Your Life Purpose, and Achieve Financial FreedomWhy We Need a New Framework for ResilienceThe numbers speak for themselves:70% of adults worldwide will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. That's 5.6 billion people alive today (WHO, 2023).Roughly 1 in 13 people globally will develop PTSD at some point.Long-term caregiving reduces life expectancy by an average of 9 years due to stress-induced telomere shortening (UCSF study).Trauma survivors are 2-3x more likely to develop chronic illness, depression, or financial instability.A landmark ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) study found that people with 4 or more ACEs are 12x more likely to attempt suicide and 3x more likely to develop heart disease.

On this week's episode we talk all about holistic pet care and why it's important to prevent common pet issues before they begin. Dr. Karen Becker is on a mission to change just that. Through her new book, The Forever Dog, and through her work as a vet, she works diligently to change the way people think about pet care. Dr. Becker: Our guest this week is nothing short of extraordinary. Dr. Karen Becker is the most followed veterinarian in the world, and for good reason. She believes in a deliberate, common sense approach to creating and maintaining vibrant health for companion animals and an unconventional, integrative approach to addressing disease and re-establishing wellbeing in ill pets. This refreshing, proactive approach that intentionally focuses on creating or restoring wellbeing has been embraced by millions of pet lovers around the world. Overview: We sit down with Dr. Lonnie Nelson, a clinical psychologist and member of the Cherokee Indians, to explore the importance of centering Native communities in healthcare research and practice. We learn about how Lonnie's personal experiences with family health challenges shaped his professional journey, and how he reframes common clinical approaches to focus on culture, self-determination, and relational trust. We dive deep into the role of "culture as medicine," uncovering how traditional practices and genuine human connection can foster healing far beyond what Western medicine often recognizes. We also discuss Lonnie's work addressing health disparities, brain health research in urban Native elders, and the need to move away from transactional, role-based healthcare toward true person-centered care. Three Takeaways: - Community-Driven Research, Not Researcher-Imposed SolutionsLonnie Nelson's approach flips the traditional research model by centering the priorities of American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Rather than imposing outside solutions, he collaborates with community members to identify needs and co-create potential interventions, then seeks funding to rigorously test these ideas. This honors cultural wisdom and ensures research is relevant and respectful. -Reclaiming Indigenous Roots in Motivational InterviewingA fascinating point Nelson brings up is that motivational interviewing—a mainstream therapeutic technique—has roots in Indigenous traditions. He highlights that its effectiveness comes from Native practices grounded in respect, non-judgment, and relational conversation. However, much of Western healthcare training strips these origins, sometimes making the approach feel manipulative; Nelson, instead, works to restore its original, culturally-grounded intent. -The Native Concept of “Medicine” is Holistic and TransformativeIn Native cultures, “medicine” isn't just pharmaceuticals or interventions—it's anything that can transform how you feel, from the smell of your grandmother's kitchen to community rituals. Nelson stresses that when Native people say, “culture is medicine,” it's about emotional and spiritual transformation—not just physical wellness. Hi Wellness Warrior! Today, we're diving into something that doesn't always get talked about enough—but when you experience it, it can shift everything. I'm talking about somatic work. You see, so often as moms, nurses, caregivers—we live in our heads. We push through stress, we manage schedules, we deal with emotions by tucking them away and just keeping on. But our bodies… they hold the story. They hold the stress, the trauma, the unspoken emotions. That's where somatic work comes in. It's a way of gently reconnecting to the body, releasing what's been stored, and creating space for peace and healing. And the benefits are powerful: reduced anxiety, improved sleep, nervous system regulation, and even more clarity in how you show up for your life and your people. And today's guest, Shay Joyner, knows this first-hand. She's a new author and someone who courageously stepped into somatic practices—and through it, she experienced a huge holistic breakthrough. Shay Joyner is a daughter of the most high king first and foremost. A mother to 4 and a wife to 1. Living within her comfort zone for the majority of her life, the Lord in his sovereignty and goodness, brought her through some rough patches & seasons, revealing to her the real strength she has, through Him and that there is far more that God has in store for her than she could ever think or imagine. I can't wait for you to hear her wisdom, her honesty, and her encouragement for you as a mom navigating stress, burnout, and the desire for deeper wholeness. So let's jump in! They explore the complexities of financial situations, the importance of having a financial team, and the need for holistic financial planning. The discussion emphasizes the value of having a trusted advisor to navigate major financial decisions and support clients through various life stages, ensuring that their financial plans align with their goals and needs. Key Takeaways: It's essential to recognize when your financial situation becomes complex. Hiring a financial advisor can provide clarity and support during significant life changes. A financial advisor acts as a partner in navigating financial decisions. Understanding the difference between various financial advisors is crucial. Holistic financial planning considers all aspects of a client's life. Diversification is key to managing financial risk effectively. Clients should feel supported and not alone in their financial journey. The relationship with a financial advisor should be ongoing and personal. It's important to prepare your spouse for financial management in case of unforeseen events. OA1184 - The saying pretty explicitly tells us to don't, and yet here they are not don'ting. This week on Rapid Response Friday: why is a Texas lawmaker filing a habeas petition asking a federal court to release her from the state capitol building? What's the deal with redistricting, and is Texas's plan to tip the balance in the U.S. House of Representatives actually legal? Jenessa brings her voting rights expertise to explain why this plan is so bad that state Democratic leaders had to go on the lam on threat of arrest to try to stop it. We then briefly discuss the import of Attorney General Pam Bondi pulling back from her attempt to take over DC's entire police force before Matt takes on a couple of little-noticed immigration policy memos in which the Trump administration has given itself dangerously broad new powers to determine things like an immigrant's “good moral character” and “anti-American” activities and associations. Finally in today's footnote: it's Columbia-on-Columbia violence as the West Coast sportswear company goes to war with the East Coast Ivy League university over some IP nonsense which gives Matt yet another excuse to be correct about fonts. Texas state representative Nicole Collier's habeas petition (filed 8/19/25) “Restoring a Rigorous, Holistic, and Comprehensive Good Moral Character Evaluation Standard for Aliens Applying for Naturalization,” USCIS (8/15/25) “Clarifying Discretionary Factors in Certain Immigration Benefit Requests,” USCIS (8/19/25)  Columbia Sportswear v. An episode from The Holistic Navigator. This is not to diagnosis or treat any disease/illness. Consult your physician before taking supplements or medications OR before you stop taking medications. This is for entertainment/informational purposes only! When it comes to iron most of us are familiar with anemia, the lack of iron in the blood. With the onslaught of processed and fortified foods found in our grocery stores today and the growing popularity of supplementation, it's quite possible that you or somebody you know may be exceeding the recommended daily allowance and building up excess iron in the blood. Iron is generally recognized as a beneficial nutrient, but just like most everything else in the world having too much makes it take a dark turn. Excess iron levels have been linked to everything from an increased risk of heart disease to Alzheimer's disease, so it's important to read labels and pay attention to how much iron we may be ingesting. On this week's episode we break down the ways you might be getting too much iron, the many risk factors involved with iron overload, the specific blood tests to test for excess iron, and what to do if you find you have too much. Some Points We Discuss: iron and what does it do in the body? (3:04) iron overload. (4:04) daily allowance of iron. (6:30) your body if you have too much iron?
