Escuchar audio

Global Petroleum (AIM:GBP) executive chairman Daniel Page highlights the company's strategic direction and future plans in an interview with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion. The UK-listed exploration company is undergoing a significant restructuring, led by Page and the new board since their appointment in November. The company holds legacy assets in Namibia and Italy and has entered into a promising joint venture in the Eastern Mediterranean with Cynergy East Med LLC. This partnership is set to capitalize on substantial opportunities in the region, further energized by recent announcements from BP and NOC. Global Petroleum is focusing on producing assets, aiming to leverage the Eastern Mediterranean's potential to enhance shareholder value. Page discussed the company's approach to its legacy assets, including a 78% interest in an exploration license in Walvis Bay, Namibia, emphasizing the importance of financial discipline and a thorough technical review to maximize shareholder returns. The company is actively exploring opportunities in Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, committed to asset diversification across these regions. Financially, Global Petroleum is in a stronger position, with improved cost management and a strategic focus on achieving cash flow positive status. Page said the board's decisions are driven by financial discipline and the goal of enhancing shareholder value within a reasonable timeframe. He also highlighted the alignment between the directors' interests and shareholder value, noting their significant investment in the company and a compensation structure focused on long-term equity and options rather than immediate cash rewards. ‌ #GlobalPetroleum #OilAndGas #EnergySector #ExplorationCompany #EasternMediterranean #OilExploration #EnergyInvestment #ShareholderValue #FinancialDiscipline #LegacyAssets #NamibiaOil #ItalyOil #JointVenture #SynergyEastMediterranean #EnergyMarket #PetroleumExploration #InvestingInEnergy #UKListedCompany #GlobalPetroleumInterview #DanielPage #GlobalPetroleum #OilAndGas #EnergyExploration #NamibiaOil #EasternMediterranean #InvestmentOpportunity #EnergySector #PetroleumExploration #ShareholderValue #FinancialPrudence #PortfolioDiversification #EnergyMarket #GlobalEnergy #StrategicPartnerships #ExecutiveInterview #ProactiveLondon #ProactiveInvestors #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

In Namibia, there are only three people per square kilometre, the top income tax rate is 37%, citizens pay no capital gains tax, and there is no estate duty to be paid. Added to this low population density and tax regime are abundant natural resources and low crime rates, which is why our neighbouring country in the desert is being tipped to be the next hot spot for dollar millionaires by wealth analysts at New World Health (NWH). In an interview with Biznews, Head of Research at NWH, Andrew Amoils said hat Namibia shares many traits with Australia and could be described as the Australia of Africa. He says it is becoming a popular retirement destination, especially in parts of Windhoek and the areas between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, where lifestyle estates are on the rise. If South Africa was safe and followed Namibia's capital gains tax and estate duty policies, he said, it would be one of the wealthiest countries in the world in a decade

So here we are, the sound of peace settled over Ovamboland, it was the end of 1988. The South Africans were actually in a much better position than it appeared. Yes, they were losing Namibia, and were going to also lose their vital strategic port of Walvis Bay. Still, UNITA was left out of the discussion, they would continue to fight against the Angolan MPLA. In 1978 the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution SR 435/78 — and from then on Pretoria led the UN on a merry dance by increasing it's military involvement in Angola, not decreasing. The United States joined the South Africans in calling for the Cuban withdrawal from the country to be part of any future negotiations. This had eventually led to the dramatic signing on the 22nd December 1988 of the implementation of SR 435/78 with a period of transition set down to begin on April 1st 1989. Elections would be held in Namibia by November 1989, and by mid-1990 Namibia would be independent. But from earlier, by early August 1988, the South Africans had begun a process of withdrawing its troops from southern Angola. On 30 August 1988, the last of the South African troops crossed a temporary steel bridge into SWA/Namibia watched by the world's media and the Joint Monitoring Commission, 36 hours early than the planned time. A convoy of fifty vehicles with around thousand soldiers crossed over singing battle songs. After officers of the three countries walked across the bridge, the South African sappers begun to dismantle the temporary steel bridge. There was a prickly round of discussions about the United Nations Transition Assistance Group or UNTAG. The role of the UN was reduced in early 1989 when the Security Council decided to cut the military component of UNTAG from 7500 to 4650. Originally the permanent members wanted to cut this still further, but the non-aligned movement, the Organisation of African Unity, the Namibian Council of Churches and most Nordic countries were opposed to further cuts - they were really worried about the South Africans. Hundreds of SWAPO guerrillas suddenly began streaming across the border on the 1st April 1989 in large groups of fifty or more. The flood was picked up by elements of the SWATF and police, and alerted the South Africans. Pretoria was stung into action, and shouted foul as the aggrieved party, calling for the UN to deal with what they saw as an obvious attempt by SWAPO to take advantage of their pullout. UNTAG was enjoying demonstrations and celebrations throughout Namibia, when the Administrator-General told the Special Representative that further armed SWAPO personnel had crossed the border and firefights and contacts were occurring on a broad front throughout the Ovambo area of northern Namibia. A series of similar reports came in during the first and second indicating military action and casualties on a scale not seen for many years in the Namibian conflict.

Namibia best place to mine, says lithium, tin, tantalum miner

Namibia is the best jurisdiction in Africa in which to mine, Andrada Mining CEO Anthony Viljoen told the Junior Indaba on Tuesday. London Aim-listed tin, tantalum and now lithium mining company recalled how it had looked across African jurisdictions when initially pursuing tin-mining opportunities and had found Namibia to be a cut above. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) “Namibia is easy stock. I'm a miner not a politician, but I can tell you that Namibia's a very happy place for our money. I can't say enough good things about being invested in Namibia and Namibia's geology is absolutely fascinating, the Erongo region in particular,” Viljoen told the indaba, chaired by mining luminary Bernard Swanepoel. Erongo is one of the 14 regions of Namibia. Its capital, Swakopmund, is named after Mount Erongo, a well-known landmark in Namibia and in this area. Erongo contains the municipalities of Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay and Omaruru, as well as the towns Arandis, Karibib and Usakos. “You've got these pegmatite belts, which are not uncommon. But these pegmatite belts are quite unique in Namibia in that they run for hundreds of kilometres, east and west, and they swarm all the way up and down the coast,” Viljoen told the indaba covered by Mining Weekly. Usually pegmatite belts pinch out after a couple of hundred metres to a kilometre. “But Namibia's are just incredibly long and incredibly thick, hundreds of metres thick. When we picked up the licences, we picked up the old licence areas because there was a lot of geological data and the biggest of those old mining areas was the old Uis tin mine, that was once an Iscor asset.” Iscor was formerly South Africa's State-owned steelmaking enterprise that was unbundled and sold. There was a huge amount of data that allowed Andrada, formerly AfriTin, to get stuck in. What the old-timers would do is they would follow the pegmatite belts, find where they outcropped and open a pit. As they mined over 12 historic pits, Andrada had the benefit of that historic reserve. It did a confirmatory drilling programme concurrent with developing the plant and at the biggest of the historic pits, it did down dip extensions, to find that the orebody was 70% bigger that had been historically declared. The company also tested for a variety of different elements that are typically within pegmatite and what it found that associated with one of the biggest tin deposits by inventory size is also one of the biggest lithium deposits. It still has another 900 holes to confirm, which were displayed on a satellite image. “Where this becomes just so fantastically huge for us is that all those orange marks on the satellite image are pegmatite. We've got another 180 outcropping pegmatites within our licence area. The extent of our mineralisation is huge,” said Viljoen. Andrada has gone into production on a shoestring with the help of South African engineers and has embarked on an expansion project to increase capacity and become a polymetallic producer of lithium, tin, and tantalum. “But by far amongst everything we're doing, lithium is really taking centre stage,” said Viljoen. Steps are now being taken to sell the lithium concentrate being produced into industrial and chemical markets.

If you like junior resource companies transitioning from exploration to production, UBQ is exactly what you should be paying attention to, a very young company controlled by seasoned management that has big plans to become a fully operating mining outfit. Ubique's experienced management group has track record of multiple discoveries of deposits worldwide and have just pulled off a major acquisition that will propel this small, early exploration company that just got started into the next level: production, revenue and free cash flow. They are doing this through the acquisition of Namib Lead and Zinc Mining Limited, Namibia, Africa. Namibia is one of the top African countries to operate in. According to the Fraser Institute, there are 25 operating mines, producing over 100 minerals & employing around 15,000 workers. This is a pro mining jurisdiction and they just gave Ubique the green light to proceed with the transaction. Ubique is going to become a miner, possibly as soon as six months from now. Ubique has put itself in the position to potentially generate 10 to 30 Million in annual Cash Flow. Their soon to be Lead-zinc mine was built in 2018-2019 and operated until April 2020. It is as very modern operation and was put into care and maintenance due to health and safety concerns related to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is where managements experience comes into play, identifying a very undervalued asset, depressed due to non mining reasons. The Project's mine site and processing facilities consist of an underground mine developed by trackless decline and sub-level stoping to yield 500 tonnes per day of ore.The ore is fed through a conventional crushing, grinding, and floatation plant to produce zinc and lead/silver concentrates which are filtered and dried on site before trucking the concentrate 70 kms to a deep water port with container handling facilities at Walvis Bay, from where the concentrate is shipped to international custom smelters. This is and will be a revenue generating operation. The Mineral Resources statement in 2012and updated in 2017 demonstrates viability for a mine plan. Indicated is 710,300 tonnes grading 7.02% zinc, 2.40% lead and 50 g/t silver plus, and Inferred is 408,700 tonnes grading 5.96% zinc, 2.16% lead and 38 g/t silver. There are many years of production ahead. Ubique has acquired 90% control of a company with a past producing Zinc mine. It is currently on care and maintenance, however it is in great standing and only lacks an operating partner, until now. Having been been given the go ahead from the Namibian Government in support of their transaction, it now only require shareholder and regulatory approval. Have seat and listen to this great interview with Vilhjalmur Thor Vilhjalmsson, Chief Executive Office as he discusses the impact Namibian approval will have on the future of Ubique and their goal of becoming a fully operating mining outfit.

Minergy posts first profits from Masama mine, expects profitable 2023 financial year

Botswana-listed coal miner Minergy has reported “remarkable growth” in revenue from P193-million in the 2021 financial year, to P425-million in the 2022 financial year. The company achieved the one-million-tonne mark for ore extracted and processed at its Masama coal mine, which is located 60 km northeast of Gaborone, in Botswana, in the year under review. The company started turning a profit in the fourth quarter of the 2022 financial year ended June 30, which sets it on a path for a profitable 2023 financial year. Minergy's operating loss has narrowed to P74-million, against an operating loss of P85-million posted in the prior financial year, mostly owing to the company breaking even in the last quarter. CEO Morné du Plessis describes the reporting year as “historic” in having a challenging first three quarters, followed by an exceptional turnaround in the fourth quarter. He attributes the company's pure coal sales growth, which amounted to P297-million, against pure coal sales of P167-million posted in the prior year, to the many European and Eastern countries looking for alternative sources of supply. As a result, Minergy's high-quality coal became a sought-after commodity. Du Plessis tells Mining Weekly that the cycle of a shortage of energy supplies is poised to continue, particularly if the war in Ukraine persists beyond this year. He believes governments are realising that switching off coal completely is not the way to go if economies are to remain electrified. Du Plessis adds that because many coal mining companies have ceased operations or diversified away from the commodity, it leaves a shortage of coal supply in the market, to which Minergy is well positioned to cater to. Du Plessis explains that the war in Ukraine has led to high coal prices as of end-March, as energy markets have come under severe security of supply pressure. However, he adds that hyperinflationary-like price increases of explosives and diesel had diminished some of the revenue gains made in the year. The regional market, in contrast with the international market, was constrained for most of the year under review, owing to an oversupply of coal. Du Plessis explains that because South Africa's State-owned freight utility Transnet Freight Rail failed to support many coal dispatches into the export market through its Richards Bay port, many coal suppliers dumped coal into the regional market instead of exporting to the international market. Moreover, the year was also marked by some key events for the company, including a debt restructuring exercise to stabilise the business and the successful commissioning of Stage 4 of Masama's processing plant, which involves screening and stock handling. The now fully functional plant contributed greatly to a steady production environment. The mine is currently producing at a run-of-mine rate of 125 000 t a month, or 1.5-million tonnes a year, which Minergy aims to sustain in the 2023 financial year. Responding to whether Minergy plans on expanding Masama or venturing into more projects, Du Plessis says the mine's 390-million-tonne resource will keep it in production for well over 100 years, even at aggressive production rates. Instead, the company will focus on its markets and maximising sales, particularly the seaborne market, which Du Plessis says is now a viable pursuit owing to high prices. Minergy continues to capitalise on viable export opportunities through the ports of Walvis Bay, in Namibia, and Maputo, in Mozambique. “Historically, plant and market factors limited us from operating at optimal capacities, but fortunes have now changed. This turnaround supports the expansion of mining operations to produce additional coal, and the mining fleet has been increased to capitalise on this. “Opportunities to exceed production capacity and the resultant additional saleable production are being pursued,” Du Plessis states. He is positive about the outlook for the coming year and expects the company to becom...

A keel-laying ceremony took place at Finnish shipyard Meyer Turku to officially mark the start of the revolutionary ship's physical construction, with Royal Caribbean and Meyer Turku senior executives and teams in attendance. The keel laying, a longstanding maritime tradition, involved a 3,000-ton crane lifting a massive steel block that is placed into the new ship's building dock and on top of freshly minted coins, which represent the shipyard and cruise line. The coins are meant to bring luck during construction, and they will be retrieved and given to Icon's captain and crew before setting sail.Icon will set sail next year with the latest innovations and signature features Royal Caribbean's teams have imagined and reimagined in bold, new ways, including a shift toward cleaner energy. The first of three Royal Caribbean ships will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) – the cleanest fossil fuel available to cruise ships today. Combining LNG with a lineup of the cruise line's proven applications, such as shore power connection and waste heat recovery systems that repurpose excess energy to help power the ship's operations, Icon will be the next important step in Royal Caribbean's journey toward a clean-energy future.Signed, sealed, delivered… Celebrity Beyond. Exactly 20 years ago – on 5 April 2002 – the first two ships in the fleet were christened A-ROSA BELLA and A-ROSA DONNA in Rostock. A-ROSA celebrates the anniversary on board its ships with an A-ROSA United Event, where guests celebrate together with the crew until late at night. With the introduction of the A-ROSA brand, river cruises were offered for the first time to a younger clientele – detached from conventions, casual, active and full of highlights on board and ashore. The company has always remained true to this concept.Review of the christening of A-ROSA BELLA and A-ROSA DONNAAfter a construction period of only twelve months in the Neptun Yard Rostock, the two innovative river ships A-ROSA BELLA and A-ROSA DONNA received their official names during a double christening ceremony on 5th April 2002 in Rostock's city harbour.Godmother of A-ROSA BELLA was the 18-year-old The Honourable Anna Sterling, daughter of Lord Sterling of Plaistow, Chairman of P&O Princess Cruises. A-ROSA DONNA was christened by Anja Mager, 19 years old and an office management trainee with Seetours in Rostock. After an experience ship tour and reception in the coffee house on board, the guests were invited to the dinner “La BELLA DONNA” with live entertainment in the Nikolaikirche Rostock.Immediately after the christening, the two 860-ton ships left the Rostock overseas port expertly packed and secured on a barge for the Danube delta.History of A-ROSAThe A-ROSA brand was founded in 2000 by Seetours, the German offshoot of P&O Princess Cruises. Shortly after the deployment of the first two Danube ships, the company was taken over by Deutsche Seereederei in 2003 and the Danube fleet was expanded by two more ships. The Rhône was introduced as a new trade lane in 2005, on which A-ROSA STELLA and LUNA have been cruising ever since. In 2009, the first cruises on the Rhine started and the financial investor Waterland bought A-ROSA. After three classic Rhine ships, two Rhine-Main-Danube ships were put into service in 2012 and 2014 with the A-ROSA SILVA and FLORA. In 2013, Jörg Eichler came on board as managing director and introduced the premium all-inclusive fare and family cruises with Kids Club from 2014.With the Seine, the second French cruising area was added to the portfolio in 2017. After the takeover by the British financial investor Duke Street in 2018, the A-ROSA ALVA set sail on Portugal's Douro. In the 20th anniversary year of 2022, a total of twelve A-ROSA ships will be sailing in five European destinations. In May 2022, the A-ROSA SENA, the most innovative ship in the fleet, will join them, offering more space for the A-ROSA concept – spacious balcony cabins, a dedicated Family Area with Kids Club, several restaurants and bars as well as a particularly large wellness and fitness area. Diamond mining company Debmarine Namibia on March 18 officially inaugurated its latest diamond recovery vessel, christened on the day as the Benguela Gem (previously the AMV3), at the Port of Walvis Bay, Namibia. Debmarine Namibia is a joint venture marine diamond and prospecting company owned by the government of Namibia and De Beers. The Benguela Gem will form part of the fleet operated by this 50:50 partnership. This custom-designed vessel is the most technologically advanced and sophisticated of its kind, CEO Otto Shikongo acclaimed at the inauguration. He explained that the name pays homage to the Benguela Current, which is responsible for Namibia's marine riches, and that the aim was for this vessel to recover high-quality diamonds that would benefit and nourish the country in similar vein, in a way that respects the environment and protects the crew. Shikongo said the completion of this project marked the culmination of over six years of planning and was delivered three months ahead of deadline. Moreover, this planning goes back even further, to 2017, when the SS Nujoma vessel was launched. Shikongo said the SS Nujoma delivered an “exceptional” performance in its first year, following which the company approached the idea to the board of building a new recovery vessel. Following rigorous testing and a lot of planning, in May 2019, Debmarine Namibia approved building of this bespoke new vessel. Building the Benguela Gem carried on throughout the pandemic, despite the difficulties this posed. Moreover, the company had to manage operational aspects such as training the young men and women who would operate and maintain the vessel, he said. The building occurred at the DAMEN shipyard in Romania, before heading from there to Walvis Bay for the inauguration, via Cape Town. The Benguela Gem was built with parts from 27 different countries, with some of the steelwork fabricated in Walvis Bay, in Namibia. Shikongo highlighted a notable feature of the vessel as its dynamic positioning system, which uses learnings to automatically optimise the vessel's performance to changing weather conditions to minimise energy use. Notably, the Benguela Gem boasts an environmental green passport, which Shikongo said showcases the it was designed to the latest and highest environmental standards - “making her the most environment-friendly vessel of its kind”. It is also recyclable at the end of its life. Shikongo noted hat N$10-billion was invested into making the vessel a reality, with the project delivered 17% below budget. He also thanked the four Namibian banks that got together to financially back the project. He described the vessel as the largest diamond recovery vessel ever built, as well as the largest registered Namibian vessel, at just over 19 000 gross tonnage. With a design life of 30 years, the vessel would contribute 30 years to the diamond industry and the Namibian economy, Shikongo acclaimed, citing the diamond industry as the largest contributor to the country's foreign direct earnings and private sector taxes. The vessel is expected to contribute N$3-billions a year to the Namibian economy. Moreover, Shikongo said that in the Benguela Gem's maiden recovery operation in Atlantic 1, where Debmarine mines, the Benguela Gem recorded 103 hours non-stop operation at nameplate capacity, recovering 30 000 ct before stopping the operation for a scheduled import to address punch list items. “This is what I call perfection in project management,” enthused Shikongo. The vessel is expected to add an additional 500 000 ct of high-quality diamonds to yearly marine mining production. Moreover, 160 highly skilled jobs are slated to be created. Namibia President Dr Hage Geingob, delivering the keynote address at the inauguration, lauded this milestone as an "unbelievable investment” and a stellar example of private sector and government partnership. Also present at the event was De Beers Group CEO Bruce Cleaver, who acclaimed that the symbio...

This is episode 28 dealing with events in early 1978 – mainly operation Reindeer and the attack on Cassinga. As with Savannah, I’m going to spend some time and a few episodes drilling down into Ops Reindeer because it has left a legacy of recrimination and bitterness particularly between SWAPO and former SADF commanders. While most combatants have allowed by-gones to be bygones, the attack on Cassinga now forms one of the cornerstones of SWAPOs propaganda of this war while Angolan forces are more forgiving and as you hear the details, you’ll understand why. In the wake of Operation Savannah border incursions and unrest escalated in northern Ovamboland. SWAPO was now crossing into northern SWA in small, lightly armed sections or groups. Every now and again, a larger group would cross as we heard last episode where more than 80 insurgents fought running battles with SADF platoons to and fro across the cutline. South African political leadership believed the increased activity in early 1978 was directly linked to the effort by the Big Five western countries – the US, UK, France, West Germany and Canada to negotiate a settlement regarding SWA. While the negotiations stalled over two main issues – the timing of the SADF troop withdrawal and ownership of SWA main port, Walvis Bay – there was still hope. The main target however remained Cassinga and this was code-named Moscow. It was 250 kilometers inside Angola and there were significant swathes of bush and Miombo forest between it and the cutline. IT was a sprawling base, large by the standards of Angola, and protected with an intricate trench and bunker system. There were heavy machine gun positions along with 82mm mortars, B10s and possibly anti-aircraft guns.

This is episode 8 and we’re dealing with the period in the early 1970s as the border war began to escalate - and the first death of an SADF soldier inside Angola. The Portuguese had fought a ten year war in Angola by early 1970 which was showing some signs of success until the rug was pulled out from the local military and security forces because of a military coup in Lisbon. The South Africans support for the Portuguese in Angola had escalated through the 1960s and by 1968 the South Africans began providing Alouette III helicopters with crews to the Portuguese Air Force. Meanwhile in April 1973, the SA Defence Force assumed responsibility for border protection of South West Africa from the SA Police who had struggled to maintain control in the face of increased insurgency by the South West African People’s Organisation’s armed wing, PLAN. SWA Command consisted of Windhoek, Grootfontein and Walvis Bay which was commanded at that time by Colonel Ian Gleeson. Officer commanding SWA was Jannie Geldenhuys, a person we’re going to hear a great deal about in this series. Apart from the permanent Force members and a few national servicemen at Grootfontein and Walvis Bay, there were also part-time soldiers known as the Citizen Force of 24 Brigade and others in what was known as the local Commando Force. There were unusual characters in these forces such as Colonel Koot Theron and the members of Commandant Hans Heinrich Otto Denk’s 112 Commando Squadron which had its own light aircraft as a spotter plane. The concept of local armed militia was a long tradition in South Africa’s frontier communities.

Namibian Marine Phosphate launches job registration drive

While it awaits a court ruling to declare the validity of its mining licence for the Sandpiper marine phosphate project off the Namibian coast, Namibian Marine Phosphate (NMP) has decided to embark on a job registration drive. Once the project gets the final go-ahead for development, with the ruling expected at the latest in March next year, NMP expects to employ more than 600 Namibians directly and indirectly for construction and operations in Walvis Bay, as well as create opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The drive affords Namibians the opportunity to register their interest to be considered for various jobs and roles that will be created when the Sandpiper project development starts. The objective of the job registration exercise will be to compile a database of prospective job seekers who would be suitable candidates for employment in the future for various full-time, part-time and casual positions, including low-skilled labour such as security and driving to high-skilled engineering and management positions. Some roles on offer include heavy equipment drivers, administration, electrical and mechanical maintenance, fitters, boiler makers, geologists, metallurgists, surveyors, foremen and supervisors. Following the registration of interest, NMP will conduct a series of interactive workshops and seminars with the registrants to provide relevant information on NMP’s proposed operations and the related roles. NMP CEO Chris Jordinson remains confident of a favourable judgment on a review application brought by three fishing associations and a commercial fishing company, which was heard in the Namibian High Court on July 7. In the meantime, Jordinson believes the job registration drive to be a welcome initiative that Namibia needs, given its struggling economy and global uncertainty amid Covid-19. “We want to get on the front foot, since we do not know what the availability of skills and labour will be. By doing a job registration drive, we can understand the availability of people in Namibia, while educating the registrants on NMP, its environmental aspects and about the development process of the project,” he notes. Mining is the largest contributor to gross domestic product in Namibia, with one job in the mining industry creating up to seven other jobs along the value chain. NMP hopes to have supported 5 000 jobs during the Sandpiper project’s construction and operational period. PROJECT IN PROGRESS NMP’s Sandpiper project is about 60 km off the coast of Namibia and 120 km south-west of Walvis Bay. The licence covers a 2 233 km2 area in water depths of 180 m to 300 m. NMP is 85%-owned by Omani-registered entity Mawarid Mining and Havana Investments, a Namibian registered entity. The project has reserves of 132-million tons, grading 20.41% phosphorous pentoxide and mineral resources of 1.69-billion tons, grading 18.94% phosphorous pentoxide. A 2013 definitive feasibility study (DFS) on Sandpiper envisioned a three-million-ton-a-year phosphate rock concentrate project, grading about 28%, over an initial mine life of 20 years. The company plans to contract an international company to dredge seafloor sediments with a large-capacity trailing suction hopper dredge. Autonomous and remote-controlled underwater vehicles can be used to assist in positioning ships and to obtain environmental monitoring information over long periods, without the need for expensive support vessels. The capital cost to first production is estimated at about $360-million, or N$5.4-billion. Following a final investment decision and securing financing for the project, the construction and commissioning period will be 24 months. Jordinson says phosphate rock has experienced a lull in pricing in recent years, with the price varying between $88/t and $100/t, compared with an average price of $120/t in 2012; however, demand from farmers and phosphoric acid producers for the mineral remains solid....

Namibia's Minister of Works and Transport John Mutorwa says that female inclusion in the maritime sector can accelerate inclusive and sustainable development. Mutorwa was addressing women at the belated World Maritime Day celebration hosted by the National Chapter of Women in the Maritime Sector, Eastern and Southern Africa (Womesa) in Walvis Bay. He said that global statistics show that the maritime industry still remains one of the most under-represented sectors of economic activities for women. Therefore, he said, Namibia must, in line with the country's gender equality national policy, aggressively bridge the gap in order to achieve equal representation. "Ending all forms of discrimination against women is thus not only a basic fundamental human right but also a very crucial tool to accelerate inclusive and sustainable development. Empowering women also boost socio-economic growth," Mutorwa said. According to him, the directorate of maritime affairs, apart from outdated legal and institutional frameworks, with limiting civil service rules and operational constraints of government, is also seriously understaffed. The division is furthermore not able to attract and retain skilled and qualified personnel and now needs urgent attention, he said.--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices.

This first installment is a trailer for Cecil Moller's 26-minute award winning documentary 'House of Love'. The trailer helps set the context for development of the video series being developed. Surrounded by vast expanses of desert and sea, the small Namibian harbour of Walvis Bay is the unlikely setting in which filmmaker Cecil Moller explores the lives of sex-workers. Dependent for their business on the brief visits of foreign shipping trawlers to this remote port, the women give revealing insights into the choices they have made and why they have made them. Their conflicts with notions of love, sex, sin and redemption become the main themes, while the threat of HIV/AIDS hangs ominously in the background.
