This week's Say Yes to Holiness podcast 1:1 Conversation is with Dr. Richard Ludwick, President of the University of St. Thomas Houston. Dr Ludwick and I had a marvelous conversation where we spoke about the power of stories and how that resulted in the current initiative being pursued through a collaboration between UST, Houston and the Word on Fire Institute--The New Evangelization and New Media Series. Dr Ludwick shared a bit about his journey to becoming president at UST, Houston,. How he received his BA in history from the University of Evansville, an MA in higher education administration from Teachers College of Columbia University (New York), then a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Indiana University's Robert H. McKinney Law School, and finally a Doctor of Education in policy management and organization of higher education administration from the University of Oregon (Eugene) before coming to Houston where he and his wife now reside and are the proud parents of two adult children and three grandchildren. But he was most excited to speak about the initiative with Word on Fire. UST Houston's own MAX Studios is harnessing the expertise of major Catholic influencers who evangelize effectively on social media platforms, so as to demonstrate how the light of the Gospel can be brought to the digital world. There are now two episodes out on YouTube--the first highlighting Leah Darrow, and the second with Fr Rob Galea and the next two will be released soon. This conversation was with Dr Ludwick was great fun as well as inspiring and encouraging, so I pray that you find that it does the same for you and helps you keep doing WHATEVER IT TAKES to SAY YES to holiness this Easter season. Black popular culture has been viewed by some as the creative expression of Black American identity. What does it mean when those who create that popular culture don't belong to the class of Black folks they seem to portray while potentially fulfilling the worst trappings of underclass ideology regarding the Black poor?"   Touré F. Reed: Dr. Reed earned his BA in American Studies from Hampshire College (Amherst, MA), and his PhD in History from Columbia University (New York, NY). He is a fourth generation African American educator and third generation professor. Having spent his formative years in South West Atlanta, GA and New Haven, CT, Dr. Reed's research interests center on race, class, and inequality. In addition to being a historian of African American and 20th Century US History, Dr. Reed is a shred guitar enthusiast.   Get Touré's book "Towards Freedom" here: https://www.versobooks.com/books/3166-toward-freedom   Read Bertrand Cooper's Piece here: https://www.currentaffairs.org/.../who-actually-gets-to...   Thank you, guys, again for taking the time to check this out. “BING ! BING ! « BING ! BING ! Mitch is an emerging leader in the Millennial generation with a lifelong mission to empower others to overcome suffering and re-imagine the healing power of the mind through the power of storytelling, community & technology. He spent 7 years at Microsoft where he led some of the company’s biggest launches in Australia and the United States. He was flying across the world working on everything from the NFL, managing the partnership with Vogue, and even hosting private meetings with Robert Downey Jr. But that was just the outside. His inside life wasn’t the perfect Instagram moment. All this time, Mitch has suffered lifelong battles with anxiety, OCD, panic attacks and depression starting at the age of 7 which have almost taken his life. 2 years ago he broke down completely, and left him unable to continue his life at Microsoft, and returned to Australia. He thought it was all over.On the 30th May 2017, Mitch released a video of his experiences, hoping that his story would make others feel less alone about what they were going through. Within 1 week, this video reached over 1 million people on Facebook alone. News outlets (including Channel 10’s The Project), celebrities & influencers got on board to support the cause. We watched in awe as individuals from across the globe wore their heart on their sleeve (many even tattooing it on their body), to inspire others and free themselves from their own demons. Out of pain and torment bloomed what is now one of the fastest growing online mental health initiatives in the world - Heart On My Sleeve Movement – helping people come together, connect, heal and transform the global epidemic of mental health.Mitch has a Bachelor of Commerce from Sydney University and is finalizing his thesis for a Masters of Psychology from Columbia University New York. In his spare time, Mitch is a DJ, certified yoga teacher, boxer, meditation junkie, fashion tragic, pasta enthusiast, tattoo lover, writer and socialite. Family & friends are the most important thing in his life. He has visited more than 20 countries to-date, represented Sydney in squash, and completed the NY marathon. His proudest achievement is doing a handstand whilst beat boxing in front of Cara Delevingne in Brooklyn NY at 3am in front of a hot dog stand. When we think of conducting science experiments on subjects, we immediately think of mice models. But today's guest, Dr. Azra Raza, who appeared on Adam Ruins Science, says there's a more effective way. On the TV show Dr. Raza discussed how the mouse model scientists use for their research is actually ineffective; even though a medicine might work well on a rodent, the results don't translate as well as we thought to humans - especially when it comes to cancer research which is what Dr. Raza studies. Even though humans and mice share over 90 percent of their DNA with one another, our bodies still differ in numerous ways; we metabolize food and medicine differently and humans are significantly bigger than mice in size. This wastes money from the limited amount of funding that already exists and encourages clinical trials that ultimately go nowhere. On the podcast, Dr. Raza proposes a different research method that she has used herself, to much success. Dr. Raza is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York. Previously she conducted her research at Rush University, Chicago, Illinois in 1992, where she was the Charles Arthur Weaver Professor in Oncology and Director, Division of Myeloid Diseases.
