Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante & Literary Curator for the Latino Bookstore at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) in San Antonio Texas, welcomes professor Dr. Jesús Jesse Esparza, Associate Professor in the Department of History, Geography, and General Studies at Texas Southern University, to discuss his book RAZA SCHOOLS (University of Oklahoma Press, 2023) ahead of his Texas Author Series appearance on November 10th, 2023 at the GCAC's Latino Bookstore. Join us on NP LIve on October 16th, 2023 at 6:30 PM CDT as part of Nuestra Palabra's multi-stream platform broadcast on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. In 1929, a Latino community in the borderlands city of Del Rio, Texas, established the first and perhaps only autonomous Mexican American school district in Texas history. How it did so—against a background of institutional racism, poverty, and segregation—is the story Jesús Jesse Esparza tells in RAZA SCHOOLS, a history of the rise and fall of the San Felipe Independent School District from the end of World War I through the post–civil rights era. Telling the complex story of how territorial pride, race and racism, politics, economic pressures, local control, and the federal government collided in Del Rio, Raza Schools recovers a lost chapter in the history of educational civil rights—and in doing so, offers a more nuanced understanding of race relations, educational politics, and school activism in the US-Mexico borderlands. Dr. Jesús Jesse Esparza is an Associate Professor of History in the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences at Texas Southern University, where he has taught since 2009. His area of expertise is on the history of Latinos in the United States, emphasizing civil rights activism. Dr. Esparza's manuscript, Raza Schools: The Fight for Latino Educational Autonomy in a West Texas Borderlands Town, is scheduled for release in September 2023. The University of Oklahoma Press will publish it as part of the New Directions in Tejano History series. Dr. Esparza teaches Mexican American, Texas, and Civil Rights history. He received his B.A. and a master's degree in History from Southwest Texas State University and a Ph.D. in History in 2008 from the University of Houston. Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante & Literary Curator for the Latino Bookstore at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) in San Antonio Texas, welcomes award-winning Seattle writer, teacher, and editor Alma García as she returns to her El Paso roots with her debut novel, ALL THAT RISES (University of Arizona Press, 2023), a story of secrets, lies, border politics, and discovering what it means to belong—within a family, as well as in the world beyond, ahead of her Texas Author Series appearance on November 10th, 2023 at the Guadalupe's Latino Bookstore. Join us for NP Live on October 9th, 2023 at 7:30 PM CDT via our Nuestra Palabra's multi-stream platform broadcast on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube! Alma García is a writer whose award-winning short fiction has appeared in Narrative Magazine and most recently in phoebe and the anthology Puro Chicanx Writers of the 21st Century. She is a past recipient of a fellowship from the Rona Jaffe Foundation. Originally from El Paso and later from Albuquerque, she now lives in Seattle, where she teaches fiction writing at the Hugo House and is a manuscript consultant. In her debut novel, ALL THAT RISES, two guardedly neighboring families in El Paso, Texas, have plunged headlong into a harrowing week. Rose Marie DuPre, wife and mother, has abandoned her family. On the doorstep of the Gonzales' home, long-lost rebel Inez appears. As Rose Marie's husband, Huck (manager of a maquiladora), and Inez's brother, Jerry (a college professor), struggle separately with the new shape of their worlds, Lourdes, the Mexican maid who works in both homes, finds herself entangled in the lives of her employers, even as she grapples with a teenage daughter who only has eyes for el otro lado—life, American style. What follows is a story in which mysteries are unraveled, odd alliances are forged, and the boundaries between lives blur in destiny-changing ways—all in a place where the physical border between two countries is as palpable as it is porous, and the legacies of history are never far away. There are no easy solutions to the issues the characters face in this story, and their various realities—as undocumented workers, Border Patrol agents, the American supervisor of a Mexican factory employing an impoverished workforce—never play out against a black-and-white moral canvas. Instead, they are complex human beings with sometimes messy lives who struggle to create a place for themselves in a part of the world like no other, even as they are forced to confront the lives they have made. ALL THAT RISES is about secrets, lies, border politics, and discovering where you belong—within a family, as well as in the world beyond. It is a novel for the times we live in, set in a place many people know only from the news. Tony Diaz Writer and activist Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, is a Cultural Accelerator. Her book published through Penguin Random House is available through various online stores but also at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's Latino Bookstore and makes an excellent addition to your family library, public library, and underground library. Carmen Tafolla is the 2015 State Poet Laureate of Texas and the former president of the Texas Institute of Letters. An award-winning poet and children's author, storyteller, performance artist, motivational speaker, scholar, and university professor, she is the author of more than forty books and a professor emeritus of Transformative Children's Literature at @UTSA. Her numerous awards and distinctions include the prestigious Américas Award, the designation of first city Poet Laureate of San Antonio, six International Latino Book Awards, two Tomás Rivera Book Awards, two ALA Notable Books, the Art of Peace Award, and the Charlotte Zolotow Award. WARRIOR GIRL (@penguinrandomhouse, 2023) chronicles Celina and her family who are bilingual and follow both Mexican and American traditions. Celina revels in her Mexican heritage, but once she starts school it feels like the world wants her to erase that part of her identity. Fortunately, she's got an army of family and three fabulous new friends behind her to fight the ignorance. But it's her Gramma who's her biggest inspiration, encouraging Celina to build a shield of joy around herself . Because when you're celebrating, when you find a reason to sing or dance or paint or play or laugh or write, they haven't taken everything away from you. Of course, it's not possible to stay in celebration mode when things get dire--like when her dad's deported and a pandemic hits--but if there is anything Celina's sure of, it's that she'll always live up to her last Guerrera--woman warrior--and that she will use her voice and writing talents to show the world it's a more beautiful place because people like her are in it. Nuestra Palabra: 2023 ALMAAHH & MFA Studio Artists Spotlight! Tony Diaz will be interviewing a few artists and spotlight them on their artistic work as part of the 2023 ALMAAHH & MFAH community! Viri Ramos was introduced to painting at an early age by her mother who was a classically trained oil painter. Growing up they would often work along side each other. Upon graduating college, she made the move from Monterrey, México to Houston, Texas. It was during her time living on her own that she discovered acrylics, which were better suited for her not so well ventilated studio apartment. She found in acrylics the best match for her laid back relaxed aesthetic and personality. Her paintings are filled with life and fun. They are happy and playful.. at times serious, but mostly not at all. She favors rough strokes and bold colors. A more in-depth walk-through of the application in Spanish with Tony Diaz facilitating the conversation with artists Gabriela Magana and Arielle Masson from the Latina American Women's Artists of Houston, a collective of Latin American Women Artists working in the greater Houston Area since 2017. This Spanish info session will include background and guiding questions from our panel. Video and audio includes responses to posted Q&A from live session. For more FAQs - check out https://support.houstonbanf.org for updated answers to questions posed in prior sessions. Gabriela Magana is a Houston based artist born in Mexico. Her work has evolved hand in hand with the exploration of her place as a woman and as a Latina in this age and time. Therefore, she has come to use mixed media in her paintings, as well as thick paint as an exploration of materials and storytelling. She uses the physicality of her works as a symbol to the subject matter, making the viewer feel closer to the work, and giving clues about the story behind it. Arielle Masson, being born from a Mexican mother and a French father, being bilingual from birth, and now trilingual, and, after having grown up in Europe and traveled extensively in Africa, in India, and in Latin America, and having elected to live in Houston for the past 30 years, has given up trying to define, fit and belong to any specific cultural idiosyncrasy. Her hybrid position makes her acutely aware that most people identify seamlessly with their native culture without questioning it. It is only in the movement of migration, immigration that the problem of identity arises. In turn, she understand the contemporary discourse of multiculturalism, pluralism, and today's globalism, being generated mostly by relentless human technological advancements. BIPOC Arts Network and Fund, or BANF, was created to provide resources and networks that support the vibrant Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern and other communities of color of Greater Houston in fully displaying their power, values and traditions. Its goals are achieved through grant funding, advocacy, and community-building networking initiatives that revolutionize the local funding landscape, break down silos within the arts ecosystem, and welcome everyone to support and learn from BIPOC arts communities. BANF is an independent initiative funded by the generous contributions of national and local foundations, including Houston Endowment, the Ford Foundation, The Brown Foundation, Inc., The Cullen Foundation, Kinder Foundation and The Powell Foundation. Nuestra Palabra fully supports and appreciates the work of these folks and entities as we empower marginalized communities. Writer and activist Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, hosts Latino Politics and News and the Nuestra Palabra Radio Show on 90.1 FM, KPFT, Houston's Community Station. Nuestra Palabra; Latino Writers Having Their Say broadcast on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, with host Tony Diaz. Today we focus on 2 Latinas changing the world through their brilliance and art. One is stars in a new film about the struggles of our undocumented community, and the other is making a national impact telling our community's stories through classic and new media. We first talk to Erica Muñoz, who stars in the film LONG GONE BY by acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Morgan and Untold Films. This film portrays the impossible realities of undocumented Latino immigrants. It is currently playing on HBO. In the second half of the show, We interview Jessica Hoppe, a New York-based writer and social media strategist. Former Lifestyle Editor at StyleCaster, she founded Nueva Yorka. She has been tackling the challenges of alcoholism and recovery during the COVIED19 lockdown, esp. for the Latino community. We are recording remotely and sometime weeks ahead of our air dates. This makes it complicated to address breaking news; however, we must address the current death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That is an on-going and rapidly changing situation, so facts sand analyses will change day to today. However, today's show is about unleashing our voices, the power of art to heal, and changing the world. Sudden acts, such as the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis streets by those assigned to serve and protect us, are examples of racial bias coming to a dangerous boiling point. We must address the layers that lead to that. That is shaped by the inequities of the educational system in black and brown communities. That has been overlooked for too long. African American and Latino youth must receive the best education this nation has to offer. And sharing their stories, cultivating their imaginations, and edifying their spirts play a vital role in that. Social injustice is hard to quantify, easy to hide, and profoundly shapes our community's confidence, tranquility, and peace of mind. Those factors are also vital to thrive. George Floyd grew up in Houston. He attended our schools. He walked our streets. We feel he and his family's loss, and we will continue to unite to uplift the voices of our communities. The mission of Nuestra Palabra since it was founded in 1998 has been to address these issues. We must be humanized and imagined and treated as intellectuals capable of great thoughts and great deeds. We have walked with you on this path for 22 years, and we will continue. Thank you. We are in pledge drive. Alfredo Corchado discusses “A Former Farmworker on American Hypocrisy”. The Down Ballot: Penny Shaw, candidate for TX State Rep. District 148. “It’s time to offer all essential workers a path to legalization.” That is a quote from an essay by Alfredo Corchado. That quote, his work, and today’s episode represent our mission. We are bringing you a Latino perspective on politics and news on a national level and a local level. At the top of today’s show, we will talk to award-winning journalist and author Alfredo Corchado. He will discuss and read from his potent essay “A Former Farmworker on American Hypocrisy” appeared in the New York Times. We have spoken to Alfredo in the past on our sister show Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say. However, his work, especially this essay, is literature, is politics, is news. That is the fate of the Latino artists and writers. We do not have the luxury of being only writers, or only artists who can simply create art for art’s sake. Our community’s well being is on the line. And our fate is also the fate of the entire nation. The figures we focus on do not find this to be a limitation. They are empowered by the challenges of our time, and they strive to empower. That means, Nuestra Palabra create this second radio show to more directly lean into the political aspect of our work, while never striving too far from and always edifying our community’s cultural capital. With that said, the second half of our show is all about the down ballot. We speak with Penny Shaw, a Latina, in the democrat primary for Texas House Set 148. She has a run-off July 14, early voting starts July 6. The general election is in November. Also, our pledge drive begins next week. Host Tony Diaz interviews Natalia Cornelio Democratic candidate for Judge of the 351, and Sema Hernandez Democratic candidate for U.S. Texas Senate. Find out about issues profoundly facing the Latino community. This is a preview for our new upcoming show, "Latino Politics & News." Elections are Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Click here to donate to Nuestra Palabra: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9CPLMM88TF5BS Bios: Natalia Cornelio is a Judicial Candidate for the 351st Criminal District Court in Harris County, Texas. For 13 years, she has been an attorney, public servant, advocate, and criminal justice reformer. She currently works as the Director of Legal Affairs for Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis in Precinct One, where she helped draft and finalize the settlement in the misdemeanor bail reform lawsuit, ODonnell v. Harris County. Immediately before this, she was the Director of Criminal Justice Reform at the Texas Civil Rights Project. As the director, Natalia was counsel and advocate for hundreds of parents along the United States-Mexico border after being forcibly separated from their children under Trump's unlawful family separation policy. She also settled TCRP's debtor’s prison lawsuit against the City of El Paso to end the City’s practice of incarcerating people for their inability to pay traffic tickets, expanded the project’s investigations against the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and its cruel treatment of its prisoners in solitary confinement, and worked with local partners to decrease criminalization of juveniles who interface with the criminal justice system. Her opponent is incumbent George Powell in the Democratic Primary. Arlene Hecht is running unopposed in the Republican Primary. Sema Hernandez: I am the daughter of immigrants. The sacrifices my parents and grandparents made are part of what fueled my decision to run for the U.S. Senate. I grew up in a migrant working family, and I understand the struggle of people who are burdened by crushing debt, job insecurity, environmental racism, and lack of healthcare coverage. These are the common struggles of the working class. I worked in acute healthcare for six years, caring for insured and uninsured patients. Through my background in healthcare, I experienced first-hand the flaws of our healthcare system. As a mother, I became a volunteer baseball coach and a volunteer organizer for local baseball organizations, where I served on the board of directors. Our 2018 primary campaign for U.S. Senate was historic, promoting progressive issues, policies, and solutions. Our campaign earned the trust of voters who responded with 24% of the Democratic vote to this first-time candidate, all on a slim budget of approximately $4,000. She has 11 opponents in the Democratic primary. There are five candidates in the Republican Primary, including incumbent John Cornyn. The other half of his time is spent on administering database, data, as well as training staff on using technology to continue doing their amazing work. Before coming to Houston, Tomas worked for Progressive Technology Project as a data specialist. He's also worked with Alternatives for Community and Environment and United for a Fair Economy, both in Boston. Guillermo De la Rosa was one of the founders of Living Hope. Stories based on those interviews are written mostly by UT journalism students, as part of their coursework. The project has several components designed to reach audiences ranging from school children, to academics, to the general public. Voces has organized conferences, produced books and mini-documentaries, co-produced a two-act play, (through Arizona State University Public Events and the University of Texas' Performing Arts Center), created educational materials. Voces has become an international resource for documentary film producers, scholars, journalists and the general public. Rivas-Rodriguez has been active since her college years in volunteer efforts to bring greater diversity to the news media. He also writes about classical music, opera and the performing arts scene. Before arriving at the Chronicle in 2016, he worked for the Indianapolis Star, the Lafayette Journal & Courier, the Needham Times and the Boston Phoenix. Chen is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association and a 2016 National Critics Institute Fellow at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. He has won several awards for his writing on the arts, including First Place from Indiana Associated Press Media Editors for Feature Writing. He has interviewed artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo Ma, Ira Glass, Jesse Eisenberg and Ben Kingsley. Jovan Abernathy created Up for Whatever fitness tours through her the Houston Tourism Gym. She is a native of the Houston area and has been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years. She also runs international marathons, which was the catalyst of a blog she wrote (I Hope I Come Back Alive) about touring unique countries. The success of that blog, coupled with her desire to give people a unique look at this city inspired her to start the Tourism Gym. Abernathy said that during her time in the restaurant industry, she would frequently have customers from out of town, and they would always ask her: “what do you guys do here?” Her answer was always “eat!” From this, the hospitality tours of Houston was born. Most people are on a quest to find something they love and do it for a living. Abernathy knows hospitality, she can make connections with anyone she meets; her presence is inviting, fun, and she’s extremely personable — the perfect person to show you around the city. Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this, our 94th episode, our guest is Tony Diaz. Writer, activist, and professor Tony Diaz, El Librotraficante, was the first Chicano to earn a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Houston Creative Writing Program. He earned his bachelor's degree in Communications from De Paul University in Chicago. Diaz is currently a professor of Mexican American Literature and Rhetorical Analysis in Houston, Texas. Diaz is also a political analyst on "What's Your Point" which airs on Fox 26 Houston. He also hosts the weekly bilingual radio program Nuestra Palabra: Latino Writers Having Their Say which covers Latino Literature, Art, and Politics on KPFT 90.1 FM Houston. His essays have appeared in the Houston Chronicle, The Texas Observer, CNN.com, the Los Angeles Times, and The Huffington Post Latino Voices, among other publications. He wrote the novel The Aztec Love God and is included in "Hecho En Tejas: The Anthology of Texas Mexican Writers". He recently launched the column “The Cultural Accelerator” to address issues that other publications don't address in a unique style and point of view. He is the lead writer and editor for the textbook "The Mexican American Studies Toolkit". He also is an educational consultant for school districts implementing innovative curriculum. Diaz currently resides in Houston where he continues to fight for Intellectual Freedom and Freedom of Speech. Diaz made national and international news when he led the Librotraficantes in defying Arizona's ban of Mexican American Studies by leading veteran members of Nuestra Palabra to organize the 2012 Librotraficante Caravan to smuggle books banned in Tucson back into Arizona. In December, A. Wallace Tashima, a U.S. federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, ruled against the state, declaring the ban unconstitutional.
