President Donald Trump's administration is full of sycophants. That was made quite apparent this week (if it wasn't already) during a three-hour-long televised Cabinet meeting. The lengthy meeting allowed for department secretaries to sing their lord and savior's praises while the world watched on. The excessive fawning over the dear leader would raise more suspicions if it were taking place literally anywhere else. But it's happening in the United States. And we are in trouble. We spoke with Bill Kristol, editor at large for The Bulwark, to find out what we can do to meet the challenge of the moment. And in headlines: the Department of Homeland Security now prohibits state agencies and volunteer groups from receiving federal funds if they help undocumented immigrants, an alleged sandwich thrower dodged federal charges, and the Food and Drug Administration approved updated Covid-19 vaccines.Show Notes:Check out Bill's piece – https://tinyurl.com/2ynd2f8vWatch Favs sandwich guy interview – https://tinyurl.com/aaf4ajh3Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Then they unpack how the debate of what spaces should be child-free might just be anti-women. Next, KCRW's Evan Kleiman joins to discuss the state of public media, the impact of ICE raids on restaurants in LA, and her favorite summer recipes. They wrap up with a discussion in the Sanity Corner about the return of the football season, the fabulous Katseye Gap ad, and the KPop Demon Hunters phenomenon. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. Local vape shop owners say that the flavored tobacco ban Mayor Johnston signed into law last year represents an existential threat to their businesses and a major blow to the City of Denver's sales tax revenues. But will that be enough to convince Denver voters to repeal the ban this November? Producer Paul Karolyi sits down with two local vape shop owners — Kristen Hensel of Rusty's Vape and Smoke Shop and Philip Guerin of Myxed Up Creations — to talk about how kids get access to vapes, the Zyn plant being built in Aurora, and what the flavored tobacco ban means for their businesses. Paul talked about the Geek Bar website, this CU Anschutz report on Denver's flavored tobacco ban, the surge in nitrous oxide, aka “whippets,” in Denver, and Gov. Jared Polis' position on a statewide flavored tobacco ban, which he said he opposed in 2022. He also cited reporting on the repeal campaign's 17,000 signatures and $328,000 raised. The Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of over-the-counter birth control pills two years ago. The decision has dramatically increased access to contraception, according to a new study from Oregon Health & Science University. Researchers found that more than a quarter of participants who were using the over-the-counter pill had switched from using no birth control at all. They also found that members of the over-the-counter group were more likely to be uninsured and live in rural areas than participants who used prescription birth control. Cider Maker and Founder Lee Van DeWater of Pierrepont Cider shares his story in this episode on how he is forages apples to share a taste of terroir from New York's North Country. Lee Van DeWater Foraging Apples for Cider - Sustainable? Lee's cider journey started with childhood memories of sweet cider and apple trees planted by his great-grandfather. But it wasn't until he worked in Montana—buying wine for a co-op that he connected cider and apples through fermentation. Western Cider of Montana help Lee get that spark/idea of a cider life, and the seed was planted. Pierrepont cider is a one-man operation, sourcing apples exclusively within the Little River Watershed. Many of the trees Lee uses are wild seedlings, unknown varieties that thrive in New York's tough climate. He honors the trees, the land, and water, seeing cider as a reciprocal act of love for place. Low-Intervention, High-Expression Lee is self-taught and intentionally minimalist. His ciders are: Wild-fermented Unfiltered Unsulfited Aged in stainless and neutral oak barrels Some of the most memorable ciders come from single trees. Others are blends of just a few wild apples growing together. He tracks everything via GPS and harvests with the patience and perspective of a forager. “The tree that holds its fruit until the first snow, that's climate-controlled storage,” Lee laughs. May 22nd is the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and Seafarers. Bishop Brendan Cahill discusses the ministry of the church to seafarers through the work of Stella Maris. The day is intended to remember the men and women seafarers. Many seafarers are Catholic Christians and largely a migrant population in the world. Because of the nature of their work, they are not always a visible community presence. In over 50 ports, there are more than 100 Stella Maris chaplains, maritime deacons, and lay ecclesial ministers who minister to seafarers. They welcome, network, and reach out to seafarers, fishermen and women, their families, and all who work or travel on the seas. Through the celebration of the Eucharist and the Word of God, the chaplaincy team helps seafarers discover the loving presence of God in an often-challenging world. Their continued presence is a clear indication of their dedication to this vital pastoral ministry and love for the people of the sea. https://www.usccb.org/committees/pastoral-care-migrants-refugees-travelers/stella-maris-who-we-are On Wednesday, May 10, a panel of advisors to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted unanimously to make the birth-control drug, Opill, available to consumers over-the-counter in the United States. The FDA is reportedly poised to make a final decision this summer. In response to the FDA panel's recommendation, Bishop Robert E. Barron of Winona-Rochester, and chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, urged the government agency to reject this advice as “not good medicine” and continue their efforts to protect women's health. On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Jennifer Stempel, recipe developer, cooking instructor, and author of “With a Needle and Thread: A Jewish Folktale from Cuba,” a children's book that will be out in October. A classically trained storyteller and writer, Stempel frequently taps into her mixed Cuban and Jewish heritage to weave tales that engage, inspire, and enlighten. “With a Needle and Thread” is about a grandmother and granddaughter - and how a piece of clothing transforms through lifecycle events. It puts a lens on the small Jewish community - the island of Santiago de Cuba, where Stempel's family is from - and the unique ability they have to “MacGyver” life. “Whenever they are faced with a situation, where they don't have what they need to accomplish whatever goal, they figure it out” Stempel explains. “They use what they have, they are really resourceful [and] inventive.” In Spanish, it's called “lo que sea.” “This story showcases those qualities in a very Jewish way,” Stempel says. This MacGyvering translates to the kitchen, as well as to other aspects of life. And while food is not a main focus, there is food in the book. “It would not be a book that I write if there isn't at least a little bit of food,” she says. “Food is very much a passion of mine - it always has been - and I find that it is the great uniter." Stempel is also founder of The Cuban Reuben blog. “When I first started it, the emphasis on the posts really were showcasing how - not just in my. Identity, but also in the food that I eat - do these two cultures sort of meld as one?” she explains. ”So the Cuban sandwich and a Ruben sandwich to me were like the Cuban side and the Jewish side coming together … my first post was the Cuban Reuben sandwich, which combined [both].” While the blog is not currently active, there are plenty of delicious recipes, including one for guava and cheese pastry, which you can find at JewishJournal.com. Jennifer Stempel talks about lo que sea and “With a Needle and Thread,” her love of food, and how she embraces her Jewish and Cuban heritage. She also shares some of her favorite recipes and how she MacGyvers in the kitchen to make meals from what she has on hand. Learn more about Jennifer Stempel at JenniferStempel.com, get more recipes at thecubanreuben.com, and follow @TheCubanReuben on Instagram. Eggs without chickens, milk without cows, and meat without slaughter: Singapore has emerged as Asia's hub for food innovation. The city-state of six million people imports 90 percent of its food and has less than 1 percent of arable land. Now, with an ambitious goal to produce 30 percent of its food domestically by 2030, Singapore has reinvented itself as a true laboratory for global food. In 2020, it became the first country to approve the sale of lab-grown meat. Massive government investments, a surge in startups and the arrival of lab-grown products on dinner tables are reshaping its food landscape.
