How do you know whether an agricultural consultant is putting your farm's interests first? In this episode of North American Ag Spotlight, Chrissy Wozniak talks with American Society of Agricultural Consultants President Abby Byerly and Interim Executive Director Russell Morgan about trusted advice, professional ethics, and the value of bringing different specialties together. Abby, a third-generation Montana farmer and rancher and Food and Ag Center Director at Snowy Mountain Development Corporation, explains how ASAC's network helps her connect clients with the expertise they need. Russ shares how collaboration supported financial projections for an egg-production project and explains the continuing education behind the Certified Agricultural Consultant designation. The conversation also explores confidentiality, conflicts of interest, farm succession, and why a successful outcome must account for the family as well as the business. Abby and Russ preview ASAC's November 1–3, 2026, annual conference in San Antonio, including its ethics session, educational program, tours, and networking opportunities.Learn more and register: https://www.agconsultants.org/2026_annual_conference.phpASAC: https://www.agconsultants.org/Snowy Mountain Development Corporation: https://snowymountaindevelopment.com/Conference and discount questions: evp@agconsultants.orgSend us Fan MailSchedule a demo today at ecorobotix.com Introducing FarmNewsDaily.com - your source for agriculture news!Subscribe to North American Ag at https://northamericanag.com

Habitat Podcast #405 - In today's episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Gavin Sodders! We discuss: -Gavin transforms his family's roughly 26-acre Indiana hayfields through fourteen years of habitat work. -Gavin watches more than 500 persimmon trees emerge naturally after years of trial-and-error habitat work. -Gavin learns why oversized square food plots and mowing the entire property leave deer without cover. -Gavin uses a central access trail and a button-hook approach to reach stands before deer hit his scent. -Gavin plants six micro plots, favors clover, and keeps most of his roughly 26 acres in thick cover. -Gavin uses five cell cameras for inventory and past movement patterns instead of chasing fresh pictures. -Gavin builds a close-range funnel with old hinge cuts, fence openings, a cedar stand, and mock scrapes. -Gavin adds kiddie-pool water holes even though a spring-fed creek already runs through the property. -Gavin stays off his property ahead of its prime rut window instead of hunting it hard in early October. -Gavin shares why family memories matter more as his parents prepare to sell the property. We've eaten our way around the 2026 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, tried a LOT of dishes, and shared plenty of opinions along the way. Now we're taking everything we've tasted and using it to build our perfect Food & Wine meals. We're each creating our own six-course dinner using items from around the festival, with one pick in six different categories: drink, soup or salad, appetizer, side dish, entrée, and dessert. The catch? We made our selections separately and didn't share them with each other before recording, so we're finding out each other's picks right along with you. Will we end up choosing some of the same festival favorites? Will we completely surprise each other? And when we put all six courses together, will either of our menus actually resemble a meal that makes any sense?Along the way, we'll revisit some of our favorite dishes from this year's festival, debate a few of the standouts, reveal the items that just missed our menus, and see just how difficult it is to narrow an entire EPCOT Food & Wine Festival down to only six selections. So grab your imaginary reservation, pull up a chair, and join us as we serve up our perfect six-course EPCOT Food & Wine meals!

Rebecca Greene has interviewed parenting experts, authors, therapists, and educators, but this conversation may contain some of the most important parenting advice she has ever received. Her guest is her daughter, Lillie Greene, who is celebrating her 14th birthday and beginning her freshman year of high school. In this warm, honest, and occasionally emotional mother-daughter conversation, Lillie shares what it really feels like to enter high school, navigate changing friendships, manage pressure, and grow into a more independent version of herself.Lillie explains that teenagers' moods and communication are not always directed at their parents. Sometimes their minds are simply overloaded. Her advice to parents is refreshingly direct: don't take every response personally, don't force a conversation, and give teenagers time to come back when they are ready.Rebecca also learns why asking questions immediately after school can feel overwhelming, even when those questions come from love. She shares a powerful moment when she resisted the urge to question Lillie after a school dance and waited until Lillie was ready to talk the following day.Their conversation reveals an important distinction between giving teenagers freedom and abandoning parental responsibility. Lillie wants more independence, while Rebecca still needs to know where she is, who she is with, and how she is getting home. Together, they discover that trust grows when both parent and teenager communicate clearly.Lillie also opens up about people-pleasing, fitting in, developing confidence, learning to slow down, and choosing friends who reflect the person she wants to become. This episode reminds us that staying close to a teenager doesn't require parents to have all the right answers. It requires patience, curiosity, emotional safety, and the willingness to listen without immediately correcting, questioning, or fixing. In this episode:• What the transition from middle school to high school really feels like• Why teenagers may need time to decompress before talking• How parents can stop taking every teenage response personally• The difference between independence and a lack of communication• What Lillie has learned about friendship and fitting in• Why “you are who you surround yourself with” matters in high school• How self-talk and supportive friendships build confidence• Why physical activity helps Lillie manage overwhelm• The lesson Lillie is learning about slowing down• How Rebecca is learning to wait instead of pushing for answers• What helps teenagers feel safe enough to tell their parents the truth• Lillie's honest advice for parents of teenagersLillie leaves parents with a message worth remembering:“Don't force things upon your kids. Let them do what they need to do, and be the one there to support them.”Listen to The Whinypaluza Podcast on Apple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-whinypaluza-podcast/id1534167756This Episode Is Sponsored by Lovebug ProbioticsMoms spend so much time caring for everyone else that supporting their own health can fall off the list. At the same time, farmers, growers and food businesses say they are struggling with rising costs, squeezed margins and growing uncertainty. So who is benefiting from the current system? Who is under pressure? Are we paying too much for food, or in some cases not enough? And what would a fairer, more sustainable food economy actually look like?Joining Sheila Dillon are Food Programme presenter and award-winning journalist Dan Saladino; Vicki Hird, one of the UK's leading food policy experts and Strategic Lead on Agriculture at The Wildlife Trusts; and Welsh food writer, broadcaster and food strategist Simon Wright, who is currently developing a National Food Strategy for Wales.Produced by Natalie Donovan for BBC Audio in Bristol.

The peculiar thing about attention deficit is that everybody seems to have it these days, whether they've earned it through proper diagnosis or simply absorbed it from an enthusiastic TikTok video filmed in someone's bathroom. What I've learned, from my own escapades, and partly through reading Peter Shankman's excellent book Faster Than Normal, is that whatever your brain does, you need to learn how to drive it. This conversation covers the four rules Shankman uses to turn a supposedly defective brain into rather useful equipment, none of which involve medication or particularly virtuous behaviour. Structure your environment so willpower becomes optional Eliminate choice wherever possible — routine isn't boring, it's protective Exercise before you need focus, not after you've lost it Work with your strengths, delegate the rest SPONSORS ☺️ MOD.com Prescription Modafinil for energy and focus. Chef Diego Garcia: I Had Nothing to Fall Back On

    Walk-In Talk Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2026 47:32

At 14 years old, Chef Diego Garcia left his family in Mexico and returned to New York alone. He barely spoke English. He wasn't going to school. He worked wherever he could, and for a period of time, he had nowhere to live. Diego slept in the New York City subway, cleaned himself up in restaurant bathrooms and helped people carry groceries while trying to save enough money to rent a room. His parents back in Mexico had no idea. But Diego's story didn't begin there. Growing up in Puebla, he worked alongside his family in street markets, unloaded trucks filled with produce and learned to slaughter goats and prepare barbacoa with his father and grandfather. Food wasn't a career yet. It was simply part of life. New York changed that. Restaurants became Diego's education. He learned English by reading newspapers on the train and learned his craft inside kitchens. French technique, Italian cooking, sustainable seafood and years of working alongside chefs from different cultures eventually gave him a language of his own. The road wasn't clean. As a teenager in Florida, Diego found himself selling drugs, stealing cars and dangerously close to a future he knew he didn't want. He left, returned to New York and made a decision that would alter the direction of his life: he was going all in on cooking. Today, Diego is approaching 200 events through his own private-chef business while working toward his ultimate goal of opening a restaurant built around seafood, Mexican heritage and the many cultures and techniques that shaped him along the way. But this conversation goes much deeper than food. Diego talks about homelessness, poverty, pride, family violence, bad decisions, abusive kitchen culture, leadership, fatherhood, healing from childhood trauma and finally learning to be proud of himself. For years, he was trying to make his parents proud. Only recently did he realize there was someone else he needed to make proud too. Himself. KEY TAKEAWAYS Survival came before ambition. At 14, Diego returned to the United States alone because he believed staying in Mexico offered him little opportunity for education or a future. When homelessness followed, he focused on getting through one day at a time. Food was part of his life long before it became a profession. Growing up in Puebla meant markets, produce, livestock and barbacoa. By 11 or 12, he was already helping his father and grandfather process goats and cook them using techniques passed through his family. Restaurants became his classroom. Without culinary school and with limited English, Diego learned inside kitchens while teaching himself English through newspapers, books, music and everyday conversation. His path could have gone very differently. As a teenager in South Florida, Diego became involved with drugs, stolen cars and other illegal activity. Recognizing where that road could lead, he left Florida, cut ties with that life and returned to New York. Cooking became the alternative. Returning to professional kitchens gave Diego a direction. What began as survival became a deliberate pursuit of culinary knowledge and eventually a career. He learned leadership from good kitchens and bad ones. Diego experienced yelling, humiliation, racism and physical mistreatment in kitchens. Rather than repeating it when he became a leader, he decided to pay closer attention to what the people working for him might be going through. His cooking reflects more than one home. Mexico remains central to Diego's identity, but New York is part of him too. French, Italian, Nordic, Asian and seafood-driven influences have become tools he uses to express his Mexican heritage rather than replace it. His restaurant vision is rooted in honesty. Diego ultimately wants a seafood-driven marisquería built around fresh ingredients, Mexican roots and genuine hospitality. His goal isn't to tell guests how impressed they should be. He wants them to leave genuinely satisfied. Success has become personal. For much of his life, Diego measured himself against whether his parents would be proud of him. Seeing his mother's reaction to his recent television appearance helped him recognize something he had rarely allowed himself to feel:   The Companies Helping Shape Hospitality Metro Foodservice Solutions - Commercial-grade storage, transport, and workflow systems that help professional kitchens operate efficiently. Dr. Eboni Cornish, MD, of Amen Clinics and ILADS, returns for a third conversation, live in Nashville. She and Dr. Chris Motley talk about Lyme and other tick-borne infections in the brain: anxiety and depression, kids labeled ADHD, puberty flares, mold and memory, and why she calms the brain before treating anything. Plus her best question: when did your symptoms start, and where were you? Sources in the show notes. Educational only, not medical advice. 00:00 Depression, anxiety, and a Lyme test 00:39 Welcome: Dr. Eboni Cornish, live in Nashville  02:20 From bored family doctor to Lyme practice  04:13 How Lyme gets into the brain  06:12 What a Lyme brain looks like on a SPECT scan  08:02 The limbic loop: calm the brain  10:21 Is neurology catching up?  12:30 Floaters, light sensitivity, and trouble reading  14:05 Tinnitus and sound sensitivity  15:08 Can kids have Lyme? Lyme can reach the nervous system. If you have neurological symptoms and you are not getting better, Dr. Cornish says to put tick-borne disease on the list (5:16).  Calm the brain before you push treatment. Her patients who react to everything are often stuck in fight or flight, a "limbic loop" (9:37). She starts by calming the nervous system.  Kids get labeled. Many of her pediatric patients arrive diagnosed with ADHD or "being bad" (20:50). A sudden change in a child, over days rather than months, is worth asking your pediatrician about by name: PANS. Trade one food, not the whole diet. She asks a reluctant kid for one food that "doesn't love your brain," and trades a supplement off the list in return (25:04). Then she asks AI for realistic swaps a family will actually eat.  Babesia lives in red blood cells. If you have tested positive, don't donate blood. Federal blood-safety rules agree. Wellness has become a full-time job. Cold plunges. Red light panels. Supplements. Glucose monitors. Smart rings. Watches. New powders, protocols, influencers, and optimization trends arriving every week. With so much information coming from every direction, getting healthy can start to feel so complicated that people become overwhelmed before they even begin. In this solo episode of the SuperLife Podcast, Darin strips wellness back to the five fundamentals he believes do the most work: sleep, light, movement, real food, and human connection. After decades studying exercise physiology, nutrition, kinesiology, movement, superfoods, and longevity cultures around the world, Darin says his own approach to health has become simpler than ever. The message is simple: supplements, wearables, and biohacking tools can have value, but they aren't the foundation. They're the paint and furniture. Sleep, light, movement, food, and connection are the foundation holding the house up. Darin walks through the research behind each fundamental and, more importantly, gives you something practical you can begin doing tomorrow. From consistent sleep and morning sunlight to one-minute movement bursts, eating recognizable whole foods, and spending actual face-to-face time with people you love, this episode is a recalibration for anyone drowning in wellness advice. You don't need to optimize everything. Start by getting the basics right. What You'll Learn Why wellness has become unnecessarily complicated and anxiety-inducing The five fundamentals Darin believes matter most for long-term health Why sleep consistency may matter as much as how many hours you get How bright days and dark nights help support your body's natural rhythms Why you don't need a gym to meaningfully increase daily movement How small bursts of vigorous activity can add up throughout the day Why ultra-processed food can make it easier to consume more without realizing it How adding more whole plants can naturally crowd out less nutritious foods Why human connection belongs alongside sleep, movement, and nutrition Five simple actions you can begin tomorrow without buying another health gadget The 5 Fundamentals 1. Sleep Darin's first principle is simple: be boring with your sleep. He discusses research suggesting that sleep regularity is meaningfully associated with health outcomes and explains why maintaining a consistent wake time can help reinforce the body's circadian rhythm. SuperLife Upgrade: Pick one wake time and keep it seven days a week. Make your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet, limit late caffeine and large meals, and reduce unnecessary technology around your sleep environment. 2. Light Your biology evolved around bright days and dark nights, but modern life has largely reversed that relationship. Darin discusses research connecting daytime and nighttime light exposure with mental health outcomes and explains why getting outdoors early in the day is one of his foundational practices. SuperLife Upgrade: Get outside within the first hour after waking. Take your morning coffee or tea outside, walk the dog, or simply spend a few minutes under the morning sky before checking your messages. 3. Movement You don't need a perfect workout program to start moving more. Darin discusses research on short bursts of vigorous activity and explains why walking, carrying, climbing, squatting, stretching, and occasionally breathing hard can all be incorporated into normal life. SuperLife Upgrade: Think in terms of "exercise snacks." Take the stairs, walk after eating, stand up regularly, carry something heavy, play hard with your kids or dog, or find a few moments throughout the day to deliberately move. 4. Real Food Darin breaks down research comparing ultra-processed and minimally processed diets and explains why his nutrition philosophy keeps returning to a straightforward principle: eat food your great-grandmother would recognize. SuperLife Upgrade: Make real, minimally processed food the majority of what you eat. Add more vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices, aim for greater plant diversity, and slow down while eating. 5. Connection The final fundamental may be one of the most overlooked. Darin discusses research linking strong social relationships with longevity and argues that human beings can optimize their food, sleep, and training while still being starved for genuine connection. SuperLife Upgrade: Call someone instead of texting them. Share a phone-free meal. Walk with a friend. Join a recurring group. Volunteer. Help someone. Spend time face-to-face with people who matter to you. There's always another powder, gadget, supplement, wearable, protocol, or person online telling you that you're doing everything wrong. But none of those things can replace the foundation. Sleep. Light. Movement. Real food. Connection. That's the house. Everything else is paint and furniture. If your foundation is cracked, the most expensive optimization in the world isn't going to hold you up. So before you buy another gadget or chase another trend, come back to what your biology has always needed. Sleep consistently. Get outside. Move your body. Eat real food. Spend time with people you love. Health doesn't have to become another full-time job. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is return to the basics." Bibliography/Sources: 1. Sleep Windred, D. Dr. Mark Thornton, Senior Fellow at the Mises Institute, joins Julia to explain why the bond market is the pivotal story right now. The 10- and 30-year Treasury yields are back above 5%, the national debt is over $40 trillion, and deficits are running at about $2 trillion a year. Thornton argues that this is wartime-level borrowing during supposedly good times. It crowds out private investment, weighs on wages, and widens the K-shaped divide between asset owners and everyone else. He explains why he thinks the Fed's recent hike won't be its last. In his view, Chairman Warsh and Secretary Bessent are managing the problem rather than solving it, and a market break or crisis could give the Fed cover to restart money printing. He describes the US as merging onto the "highway to hyperinflation," draws on historical cases from Revolutionary France to Weimar Germany, and closes with why he expects hard assets and commodities to outperform financial assets over the next decade.Thank you to our partners Augusta Precious Metals — To learn more, visit https://juliabuysgold.com/ or text “Julia" to 35052Monetary Metals - learn more at https://www.monetary-metals.com/julia/LinksX: https://x.com/DrMarkThorntonFree Hayek book: https://store.mises.org/Hayek-for-the-21st-Century-P11367.aspxMises Institute: https://mises.org/profile/mark-thorntonTimestamps: 0:00 Intro: Why bonds are the big worry0:43 Big picture: 10- and 30-year yields at 25-year highs4:24 Are we in a new higher-rate regime?11:48 Wartime deficits in "good times"18:21 Who wins and who loses from easy money20:25 Young people, housing, and the K-shaped economy24:02 Food, energy, and the Persian Gulf conflict28:10 Are we on the on-ramp to hyperinflation?34:03 Fed rate hikes: more coming, and what's next39:27 No consequences: the "magic checkbook"47:28 How to protect yourself: hard assets51:28 Where to find Dr. Thornton's work

Then they coach live callers submitted through mplivecaller.com.   T-Shirt Winners: Apple Podcasts: Cinflute7 Facebook: Amanda Lee and Jerry Swab Send name, shirt size and shipping address to: itunes@mindpumpmedia.com   SPONSORS   Eight Sleep (Pod 5 Ultra): https://eightsleep.com/mindpump Code: MINDPUMP for up to $350 off.    Vita Bella / MP Hormones: https://mphormones.com Code: MINDPUMP365 to unlock exclusive annual membership perks.    Joovv (red light therapy): https://joovv.com/mindpump Code: MINDPUMP for $50 off first purchase.    LINKS   Submit a live caller question: https://mplivecaller.com Mind Pump Store: https://mindpumpstore.com Maps Fitness Products: https://mapsfitnessproducts.com Instagram: @mindpumpmedia   0:00 - Intro 2:37 - 5 fat loss diet myths that make losing body fat nearly impossible 5:06 - Myth 1: You should never feel hungry if you're doing it right 10:36 - Myth 2: There are fat burning foods 13:10 - Myth 3: A calorie is a calorie is a calorie 17:23 - Myth 4: Carbs or fats make you fat 21:28 - Myth 5: Food is just fuel — and why this mindset is dysfunctional 24:46 - Sal and Adam both on a winter cut — and Sal is taking 5-amino-1MQ for NAD and fat metabolism 28:33 - Adam's Oura ring readiness score after the pickleball tournament — why you can look worse holding water even on a perfect week 36:04 - Correcting the over-correction — why the worst thing to do when water is up is push harder 38:18 - Woodstock 99 — the moment Limp Bizkit broke it and why music moves culture 43:13 - Free weights vs machines study debate — Sal's response to Brad Schoenfeld on X 47:13 - Andy Galpin's set volume recommendations and why they do not apply to real people 49:37 - Adam's AC breaks during a 102-degree heat wave — sleeps through it on Eight Sleep with all covers on 58:47 - Joovv red light therapy — why it is the only red light brand that matches study wavelengths 59:50 - Caller: Susan (Missouri) — 51 years old, 22% body fat, two years with an online coach, ready to go independent, gets MAPS People and concierge option 1:09:19 - Caller: Alvin (Florida) — 64 years old, glider pilot, long distance hiker, lost ability to squat, gets MAPS Starter and creatine advice 1:20:27 - Caller: Jordan (Arizona) — 21 years old, 9.8% body fat, lost menstrual cycle, needs to reverse diet, gets coaching referral 1:33:17 - Caller: Returning caller (California) — hypermobility, single mom, gets MAPS Symmetry isometric protocol and community advice

Nutrition advice often reduces food to calories, nutrients, and a list of rules to follow. But the more we learn about how the body responds to different foods, the clearer it becomes that this way of thinking tells only part of the story. Today, I'm joined by cardiologist and public health expert Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food is Medicine Institute at Tufts University and author of the new book Food Is Medicine. We explore what we still get wrong about food and what changes when we begin treating it more like medicine. Here's what we discuss: Why eating less and exercising more may not lead to lasting weight loss, and what to focus on instead How to choose foods that work with your appetite, metabolism, and microbiome rather than relying on calorie counting What GLP-1 medications can teach all of us about hunger, cravings, and why weight isn't simply about willpower How much protein you actually need and why the source matters What the science says about seed oils and which processed foods are worth avoiding Over the years, I've learned to focus less on counting calories or chasing a single nutrient and more on the quality of the food itself. When you eat real, whole foods, the signals that regulate hunger and energy can begin to work with you instead of against you. Eating well should be less about following rules and more about understanding what helps your body function at its best. In today's episode, we dive into Part 2 of our series on bone health (really musculoskeltal health), this time tackling the importance of movement and physical stimulus. In Part 1, we talked about how important nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, protein, and vitamin D are. But eating the right foods is only half the story; we need to give our bodies a reason to use them. If you want to build strong, resilient bones, protect your joints, and stay vital through perimenopause, menopause, and life in general, it's essential to create that physical stimulus. In this episode, we explore:* Why nutrition isn't enough without the physical stimulus* The truth about collagen supplements * Those little osteocyte cells — what they are and how we wake them up* How to use progressive overload (and why you're already stronger than you think)* Why “heavy” is relative to you, and how to start where you are* The difference between weight-bearing exercises and plyometrics, * If walking, running, and court sports create the impact our bones need* Why the drop in estrogen impacts not just our bones, but our joints, cartilage, and tendons

Oh, and you don't need to spend any money on a special supplement, pill, or biohacking device. - Today's episode may be my favorite interview not just this year, but in all the 4 years I've had this podcast! I know that's saying a lot, but honestly, we didn't even scratch the surface of what we covered with Dr. Anthony Chaffee. You may have heard of him, but if you haven't, Dr. Anthony Chaffee is a medical doctor who earned his degree from the Royal College of Surgeons and has worked as a neurosurgical registrar and resident in Australia, while often coming back to the U.S.He is a hardcore carnivore, or "strict" carnivore, and has personally experienced major health benefits. He has also seen his own patients reverse type 1 & 2 diabetes, get off all medications, reverse dementia and Alzheimer's, improve gut issues such as Crohn's and colitis, reduce inflammation in the body, and so much more, all by removing plants and eating meat. We also discuss the corrupt food industry and the literature behind studies that say you need fiber or that carbs aren't the issue, because many may not know that the people and companies funding these studies will, more often than not, sway the outcome in their favor. One week of school, and then it was homecoming. Rebecca and Seth's daughters had barely settled into the new school year before the family was juggling dates, friends, photos, rides, and plans that seemed to change every few minutes. In this Whinypaluza Wednesday conversation, Seth joins Rebecca from Las Vegas to look back on the excitement and chaos. Ella was celebrating her last homecoming, while Lillie was attending her first. Rebecca wanted to show up for both girls, but their different plans made that harder than it sounds.Rebecca and Seth also talk about a lesson they've learned as parents: kids don't all want the same homecoming experience. One may want a big group, another may prefer a few friends, and another may not want to go to the dance at all. Supporting your child sometimes means letting go of the picture you had in your head.In this episode:The challenge of balancing one daughter's first homecoming with another daughter's lastWhy kids should be free to enjoy school dances in their own way, including choosing not to goThe changing plans before the dance and the parents who helped make it all workRebecca's decision to let Lillie go with her friends, even though it meant missing the photo of her daughters together that she wantedWhy clear updates about rides and after-dance plans matter to parentsHow Rebecca and Seth found a quiet moment for dinner together in the middle of a chaotic dayThe girls had a good time, and the evening worked out. Jacques Pépin has long found beauty in simplicity—a glass of warm milk, a freshly sliced lemon, a garden-ripe tomato—and in transmitting knowledge from one hand to the next. Now 90, the French chef, author, artist, and educator has spent nearly a century immersed in the world of food, beginning as an apprentice in France at age 13 and rising through Parisian kitchens before moving to the United States in 1959. Over the decades, Pépin has become one of the most influential culinary figures in the world, authoring more than 30 cookbooks and appearing in hundreds of cooking programs. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his landmark 1976 book, La Technique, recently reimagined as an expanded edition combining 600-plus foundational skills and 160 recipes. For this “site-specific” episode of Time Sensitive, we joined Pépin at his home in Madison, Connecticut, where he has lived for more than 50 years, to discuss the relationship between technique and speed, how he's developed what he calls his “taste memory,” and the extraordinary role of chance throughout his life.Special thanks to our Season 14 presenting partner, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels.Show Notes: Jacques Pépin[09:19] La Technique (1976)[09:27] Jacques Pépin Complete Techniques 50th Anniversary Edition (2026)[14:28] The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen (2003)[11:16] Craig Claiborne[15:49] Le Répertoire de la Cuisine (1914)[15:14] Société des Cuisiniers de Paris[24:39] Charles de Gaulle[25:03] Algerian War[47:26] Julia Child[39:20] Howard Johnson[39:35] Le Pavillon[42:37] Albert Camus [42:37] Samuel Beckett [42:37] Simone de Beauvoir [43:09] Michel Foucault[46:30] Voltaire[55:30] Helen McCully[57:47] James Beard[1:09:40] A Grandfather's Lessons (2017)

Best known for The League of Gentlemen and Inside No. 9, alongside a host of on-screen and stage roles, Reece Shearsmith joins us ahead of the release of his new book, Things I Took From The Dark: The Museum of Me. Inspired by his childhood love of horror, the book delves into Reece's collection of strange and unusual objects, the stories that surround them and the ways they have shaped his life and work. Reece has a strong passion for eating with the seasons so it seemed only right to recreate a meal inspired by one of his and his wife's New Year's Eve traditions. Angela serves up Martha Collison's recipe for the best salmon en croûte, enjoyed alongside a bottle of Waitrose No.1 Chablis 2024 from Burgundy, selected by the Waitrose wine experts. Halloween might still be a few weeks away, but it's never been far from Reece's life, as he discusses his childhood love of horror stories, and the rather unconventional circumstances in which he met his wife… in a coffin. Naturally, we have to ask: does anyone around the Dish table actually believe in ghosts or the afterlife? Once that's settled, we turn to Reece's other passions, including baking and his successful Celebrity Bake Off appearance alongside Nick, before getting a glimpse into the mysterious Gossip Club he shares with Bob Mortimer and Matt Berry. You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and on Spotify.  All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes The recipe for the best salmon en croûte was created for Waitrose by Martha Collison  A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish If you want to get in touch with us about anything at all, contact dish@waitrose.co.uk  Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions00:00 - Coming up on Dish… 00:47 - Welcome!  01:56 - A lesson in olive oil  05:23 - Recce Shearsmith is here!  06:57  - It's always Halloween for Reece!  07:45 - Ghosts and the afterlife 09:25 - Nick and Reece on Bake Off!  11:45 - Reece's food likes  12:02 - Nothing beats Christmas!  16:28 - Autumn superiority 18:33 - Thanksgiving   19:23 - A salmon wellington to reign in the New Year!  20:29 - From Nigel Slater love to eating out  21:28 - Reece's gossip club  22:26 - Reece's dislikes & food obsessions  25:01 - Food is served! 26:31 - Wine pairing  26:54 - Reece's new book!  29:30 - A lifelong passion for horror 33:31 - Catching bats?  34:31 - Coffin weddings and witchy weddings!  37:08 - Fast food quiz  38:10 - Inside Number 9 & League of Gentlemen  44:57 - End of the show question Learn more about your ad choices. How can two rums taste completely different even though they're both made from sugar cane? What makes Jamaican rum so famously funky, and what does a dunder pit have to do with it? How does the type of ice you use change the strength, temperature, and texture of a cocktail? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Kara Newman, the author of eight cocktail books. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Giveaway One of you is going to win a copy of one of Kara Newman's The Cocktail Cabinet. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com. I'll choose two people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights How did writing about stocks, bonds, and commodities eventually lead Kara to a career covering cocktails and spirits? Why does Kara see cocktail recipes as a starting point rather than a strict set of instructions? How does writing cocktail recipes on individual cards change the way Kara approaches storytelling? How can two rums taste so dramatically different when they're both made from sugar cane? Why did early Tiki pioneers blend multiple styles of rum into a single cocktail? How did the fierce rivalry between Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic help shape Tiki cocktail culture? What gives rhum agricole its distinctive grassy, funky character? What exactly makes Jamaican rum so funky, and what does a dunder pit have to do with it? Why does the Three Dots and a Dash cocktail literally wear its name in its garnish? Why did Don the Beachcomber impose a two-drink limit on his famously potent Zombie cocktail? How does the type of ice you use change a cocktail? Why should you stop thinking of rum as one category from one part of the world?   About Kara Newman Kara Newman reviews spirits for Wine Enthusiast magazine, where she's also a writer-at-large covering cocktails, spirits and bar culture, from Cuban rum to the world's tiniest two-seat bar. Her work also appears in publications including Afar, Bloomberg Pursuits, Food & Wine, PUNCH, and the Wall Street Journal and BBC Travel. She's the author of seven cocktail books -- soon to be eight!         To learn more, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/409.

And I found myself doing exactly what I coach women not to do: replaying the same painful event on a loop, unable to eat, work, or think about anything else. In this raw solo episode, I get honest about the imposter syndrome that hit when my own teachings felt out of reach, and I walk you step by step through the simple daily practice I've been using to pull myself forward. You'll learn why repeating a story can actually change how you remember it, the one question that interrupts rumination instantly, and how to feel your emotions fully without letting them run your day. We Go Deep On: Why the mental loop can hurt more than the event itself How retelling a story reshapes your memory of it Why I only confide in one or two people when I'm struggling The one question that stops you from replaying and starts you moving My 15-minute timer trick for feeling it without getting stuck How I use uplifting talks and "music on purpose" to shift my state The gratitude practice that actually works when life feels hard How I envision my ideal day, even in the middle of chaos Want more of how I approach thriving in midlife? Be honest with me for a second. If someone asked you right now what your retirement plan is, what would you say? If your gut answer is "Well, I'll sell the business someday," you're in good company. Most of us entrepreneurs are so locked in on the vision that the money side gets pushed to "later." I get it. Some days I just want to keep serving people and not even look at my bank account. But here's the truth that hit me hard in this conversation. Hoping isn't a plan. And no one's coming to save you.In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I sit down with my friend Dustin Bezalel, and man, this one's packed with money wisdom we never got taught in school. Dustin and I actually met at my brother-in-law Nick Hernandez's 40th birthday party, and within minutes I knew this guy gets it. He's a husband, a father of three, a man of faith, and someone who's genuinely crushing it both personally and professionally.Dustin is the president and founder of Creative Financial Network, an independent financial, risk, and wealth management firm based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. What I love about his story is that finance wasn't his first love. Food was. He's got a culinary arts degree and spent years working high end hotel catering, pulling 17 hour days without seeing the financial reward. So about 21 years ago he made the leap into financial services and never looked back. Today his firm has close to a thousand agents and advisors, and his mission is simple. Help people win at home and win in business. A lot of his drive comes from watching his mom work so hard to raise him and his brother through financial struggle. Instead of letting that become an excuse, he turned it into fuel. This episode matters because so many high performers are quietly struggling behind the scenes. The social media highlight reel looks great, but the finances tell a different story. Dustin sees it all the time with successful CEOs who close the door and admit they haven't prepared at all. This conversation gives you a clear, honest starting point, whether you're just figuring out the money game or ready to play it at a higher level. The first big lesson is that procrastination is the real enemy. Dustin shared a stat that stopped me in my tracks. About 85% of business owners won't be able to retire if they can't sell their business. That's a massive gamble to make with your future. His fix is refreshingly simple. Pay yourself first, just like you pay your rent, your electric bill, or your team. When you do that consistently, compound interest starts working for you instead of you working for everyone else's wealth. The second lesson is to diversify in three ways, not just one. Most people only think about diversifying investments, but Dustin breaks it into risk, tax, and liquidity. Risk means making sure a market drop doesn't wipe you out, especially as you get closer to your later working years. Tax means thinking about when you pay taxes, not just how much, using tools like a mega backdoor Roth or permanent life insurance so your growth isn't taxed later. Liquidity means having money you can actually access now for opportunities or emergencies. And when it comes to an emergency fund, Dustin goes more conservative than most. He likes six to twelve months of expenses. Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around. The third lesson is knowing your four protectors based on your stage of life. If you're under 50, Dustin says you want life insurance so your family is taken care of, disability coverage so income keeps flowing if you can't work, a plan for your kids' college if they choose that path, and a retirement plan where you're saving around 10% of your earnings. If you're 50 or older, the focus shifts to preserving your capital, creating guaranteed household income for life, planning for long term care, and deciding what kind of legacy you want to leave. I loved how clear and practical this was.The fourth lesson is that strategy beats emotion every single time. Dustin calls himself a financial psychologist for his clients, and honestly that made so much sense to me. Entrepreneurs are emotional people. When times are tough, we panic. When times are great, we're tempted to buy a shiny toy that doesn't make us a dime. Dustin talked about how taxi companies never saw Uber and Lyft coming, which is exactly why you can't bet everything on one business. His firm doesn't do day trading or chase get rich quick ideas. It's about building a strategy that fits your season of life, revisiting it regularly, and sticking with it. Like losing weight, it comes down to consistent diet and exercise, not shortcuts. The fifth lesson is to water every plant, every day. This one really landed for me because I burned out as a tech entrepreneur by letting everything except work die off. Dustin waters three plants daily. His family, his business, and himself. Every Sunday he meal preps for the whole family, reviews his finances, and looks back at his week while planning the next one. He works out at least five days a week, prays every morning, and carves out weekly time with his wife. He also shared a line I won't forget. His family needs his presence, not just his presents. We also dive into the great life insurance debate, why calling it a scam misses the point entirely, and how entrepreneurs who don't take a big salary can still protect themselves when traditional disability coverage falls short. We chat about why real estate in Florida is tougher right now, Dustin's take on keeping crypto to a small position, and a super fun rapid fire round where you'll find out his favorite movie and the book that really stuck with him. What I appreciate most about Dustin is that he lives what he teaches. He's humble, he's disciplined, and he genuinely wants the people around him to win. His rallying cry says it all. Have a plan, do everything at 110% or don't do it at all, and remember that today is a gift. That's why it's called the present. If you're ready to stop putting off your financial future and start building a plan that actually protects your family, your business, and your peace of mind, this episode is for you.Listen to the full episode now at https://happyhustle.com/podcast and let me know what hit home for you. What does Happy Hustlin' mean to you?Dustin said that hustlin' look at as going 110% and watering every plant in life. And happy means enjoy every moment of doing it. Whether it's struggle, embrace it. If it's easy, embrace it for the moment. Life is too short. So do it with a smile, but do it with 110%.Connect with Dustinhttps://www.facebook.com/dustin.bezalelhttps://www.instagram.com/cfnsfl/https://www.youtube.com/@creativefinancialnetworkhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/dustin-bezalel-90ab1156/?skipRedirect=trueFind Dustin on this website: https://www.cfnsfl.com/Connect with Cary!https://www.instagram.com/caryjack/https://www.facebook.com/SirCaryJackhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/cary-jack-kendzior/https://twitter.com/thehappyhustlehttps://www.tiktok.com/@caryjackhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFDNsD59tLxv2JfEuSsNMOQ/featuredGet a copy of his new book, https://www.thehappyhustle.com/bookSign up for The Journey: 10 Days To Become a Happy Hustler Online Course @ https://thehappyhustle.com/thejourney/Apply to the Montana Mastermind Epic Camping Adventure @ https://thehappyhustle.com/mastermind/“It's time to Happy Hustle, a blissfully balanced life you love, full of passion, purpose, and positive impact!”Episode Sponsors:KilnYour environment shapes your energy and your results. Today I'm speaking with Stephanie Dodier, a non-diet nutritionist, certified Intuitive Eating counselor, and cognitive behavior coach. Our conversation covers a lot of ground, but constantly circles this question:What happens when you understand all of this diet culture stuff intellectually…but it still doesn't quite feel true for you and your body?We get into:* The difference between eating something because you genuinely enjoy it and eating it because diet culture told you to* Why satisfaction and pleasure matter in having a calm, compassionate relationship with food* How gender, body size, and other identities affect who is “allowed” pleasure with food* Why Intuitive Eating can feel like it “isn't sticking”* The connection between food, body control, self-worth, and belonging* How patriarchy and cultural conditioning shape our beliefs about our bodies* Why understanding diet culture intellectually is different from embodying new beliefs* Why body image work can feel less straightforward than healing our relationship with food* What embodiment can actually look like in everyday life* Stephanie's experience learning to wear short sleeves after years of hiding her arms* How community helps us grow stronger roots outside of diet culture* A practical exercise for separating facts from the thoughts and beliefs we've attached to themStephanie's work is focused on behavioral science, human psychology and body image.
