Discipline is a necessary thing for a parent to inflict on their children so that their children can grow to live in obedience. In the same way, our Heavenly Father disciplines His children so that we can learn obedience to Him and live the life He intends for us to live.

A Generosity Game Plan with Kirk Cousins

Jim Elliot once wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”“Generous” might not be the first word that comes to mind when you think about pro athletes, but Kirk Cousins is rewriting that playbook. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in the NFL is using his platform—and resources—for eternal impact. Today, we'll hear how his faith shapes everything from football to finances.Kirk Cousins is the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and a veteran leader in the National Football League (NFL). He previously spent six seasons with the Washington Commanders and six with the Minnesota Vikings. A four-time Pro Bowler and outspoken man of faith, he is also the cofounder of the Julie & Kirk Cousins Foundation, which supports families and youth through faith-based initiatives.A Legacy of Generosity: Lessons from His ParentsGrowing up as a pastor's kid, Cousins remembers how his parents modeled generosity long before he had a bank account of his own.“My mom had the gift of hospitality,” he says. “Even when I didn't think I needed money, she'd hand me two twenties before I went out with friends. There was just this open-handedness.”While his dad managed the family finances with intentionality, it was his mother's willingness to give freely that left the deepest mark. “It was caught, not just taught,” Cousins reflects, emphasizing how their example shaped his understanding of stewardship early on.From Minimum Wage to Signing Bonuses: A Crash Course in StewardshipWhen Cousins was drafted into the NFL, his first check—a six-figure signing bonus—was a wake-up call.“As a college kid who had never earned more than minimum wage, I didn't know what to do,” he recalls. “I called my dad, and he said, ‘I don't know either!'”That moment marked the beginning of a stewardship journey—one that included learning to give, save, and live below his means in a world of excess. It wasn't easy, especially when surrounded by peers embracing a more lavish lifestyle. But Cousins understood that as an athlete, his income had a shorter runway.“You're approaching a cliff,” he says. “So it's scary to give when your career has an end date. But that's where faith comes in—trusting that God will provide beyond your own earning power.”It would be easy, Cousins admits, to treat financial obedience like a checklist—give, save, repeat. But biblical stewardship isn't about rules; it's about surrender.“I've done that—just checked the boxes. But that's not the abundant life Jesus promises. It's not religion, it's relationship.”He points to Jesus' parable of the treasure in the field (Matt. 13:44): “Once you see Jesus as the treasure, everything else becomes a logical response. Of course you'd sell everything to have Him. Stewardship flows from seeing Him clearly.”When Faith Feels Risky: Giving on a Diminishing TimelineThe tension for Cousins lies in balancing the enjoyment of God's provision with wisdom about the future.“I actually enjoy those moments that require more faith. When I give, and I don't know what's next, it puts the pressure back on God—where it belongs.”But he's quick to acknowledge the gray areas. “What's wise versus what's excessive? There's no formula. You have to walk with God and ask for His guidance daily.”One of the most valuable pieces of advice Kirk received early in his career came from a generous mentor: “Always give in unity with your wife.”That advice stuck.“When Julie isn't comfortable, I pause and pray. Her perspective might be the Holy Spirit speaking. Giving together strengthens our marriage and our stewardship.”Cousins sees their giving not only as a financial decision, but as a spiritual discipline of unity and trust.Planning for the Future: Wisdom Before WealthAs parents to young boys, Kirk and Julie have also had to consider how best to plan their estate. They've established a family office to prepare for the future—but with a strong desire to pass on wisdom before wealth.“We want to get to the end of our lives and say: the wisest hands to put this in are our kids'. But we also want to be realistic. If it wouldn't be wise to pass along wealth, we want our plan to reflect that.”Much of their estate will also go to their foundation, which they hope will be spent down soon after their passing. “We don't want it to live on in perpetuity with intentions we never had. We want to make an impact now.”So, where is Kirk Cousins most excited to give right now? The answer goes back to his roots.“I went to a Christian high school—Holland Christian—and it profoundly impacted my life. I want to make it more affordable for other families, support teachers, and strengthen Christian education.”It's a full-circle moment: a public school kid transformed by Christian community, now investing in the same kind of life-shaping environments for others.Final Whistle: A Life Well StewardedKirk Cousins is more than an NFL quarterback. He's a husband, father, and faithful steward who is using his influence to glorify God—not just in the end zone, but in the quiet decisions of budgeting, giving, and planning for the future. His story reminds us: Stewardship is not about how much we have—it's about how faithfully we respond to the One who gave it all.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I own my home outright and keep hearing about home title protection services. How real is the risk of title fraud, and should I be concerned?I have rental properties in Arkansas, but my kids in California don't want them. I'm worried that when I pass, they'll sell them quickly for way less than they're worth. Should I go ahead and sell them now and put the money in a trust for my grandkids' education—or is there a better option?”Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)The Julie & Kirk Cousins FoundationWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Welcome back to another episode of The Richer Geek. Today's guest is Mohamed “Mo” Ahmed, a serial entrepreneur, product visionary, and author of Inside-Out Entrepreneurship. Mo has built and sold multiple companies in AI and cloud computing and now helps founders strengthen the mindset needed to survive and thrive. He shares hard-earned lessons from costly mistakes, near-failures, and unexpected wins, and why your mindset is your most valuable business asset. In this episode, we chat about… Mo's shift from working at Microsoft and AWS to becoming an entrepreneur Why most founders underestimate the mindset shift needed when leaving corporate life The difference between mental robustness and mental resilience Real stories of setbacks like a surprise $65,000 AWS bill and how mindset shaped the outcome How separating your personal identity from your business identity helps you recover from failure The role of daily discipline and having a “default calendar” to stay focused Why financial conditioning matters before starting a company How to turn setbacks into opportunities, sometimes even better ones than you planned Key Takeaways: Your business will only grow as much as your mindset grows. Mental robustness means withstanding pressure without breaking; resilience means bouncing back when you bend. Separate your identity from your company, you're more than your business. Discipline and structure keep you moving when motivation fades. Prepare financially before launching a business to reduce stress during hard times. Setbacks can be turned into better deals or opportunities if you respond quickly and with the right perspective.   Resources from Mo LinkedIn |  boundlessfounder.co | The Inside-Out Entrepreneur Resources from Mike and Nichole Gateway Private Equity Group |  Nic's guide

I grew up in Coventry with discipline, community, and respect. Today we've got more stuff than ever… but are we really better off? This is me in the Seventies — eleven years old, outside my local church with my cub and scout group. My dad was a copper, my mum was a dinner lady. We didn't have much, but we had order, rules, and a real sense of belonging. That church is gone now, demolished. My mum died just months after this photo was taken. And looking at it today, I can't help but ask — were we happier back then? We've traded community for convenience, respect for self-interest. This is your chance to build heavyweight habits that actually make you dangerous. Let's rep it out!You don't become spiritually strong by sitting on the bench. You've gotta lift what's heavy, push what resists, and train like your soul depends on it—because it does.“Discipline is the bridge between weak intentions and strong convictions.” - Unknown1 Timothy 4:7-8 (ESV) - Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.TACTICAL APPLICATION STEPS:1. Back in Episode 52, we dug deep into what distraction does to the body—how it hijacks your nervous system, wrecks digestion, disrupts sleep, and drives chronic stress. This week, we're moving beyond the problem and into the start of the solution.   In this heartfelt opening to the four-part Distraction Detox series, Jamie Belz gets real about life in “dizzy-busy” mode—running on someone else's schedule, juggling endless obligations, and watching joy and energy slip away. From stress hormones bullying your body's systems to nutrient deficiencies, late nights, and skipped movement, you'll learn exactly how busyness erodes your Foundations of Health: digestion, blood sugar regulation, nutrient-dense diet, sleep, stress, and movement.   This isn't just theory—Jamie is in the middle of this reset right alongside you. Together, you'll start with two action steps for this week that will set the stage for resetting your priorities and presence, and reclaim your energy, focus, joy, and overall health.   Next week, we'll move into Part 2: Clearing Your Environment—turning your physical space into an ally, not a combat zone.   If you're ready to break free from “dizzy-busy” living and start experiencing clarity, vitality, and presence again, grab a notebook and let's get to work—together.   This episode is a great one to share with friends! Are you wondering why Your SaaS GTM Isn't Working, And How to Fix It with Operational Discipline? In today's competitive business environment, success depends not just on great products, but on how effectively you bring them to market. Yet, many companies struggle with go-to-market (GTM) strategies that fall apart under pressure. Why? Because marketing and sales often operate in silos, pulling in different directions instead of working as a unified force. Think of it this way: marketing should act as the recon team, gathering intelligence, identifying opportunities, and setting the stage. Sales, on the other hand, is the strike team—responsible for execution and closing. When these two functions are misaligned or overloaded with conflicting motions, the result is confusion, inefficiency, and missed revenue. In this episode of the Grow Your B2B SaaS Podcast, Joran Hofman sits down with Head of GTM Garrath Robinson to explore why most GTM strategies fail—and how a disciplined, military-inspired approach can help businesses stay focused, aligned, and ready to win.Key Timecodes(0:00) – The Battlefield of Business(1:12) – Meet Garrath Robinson: From Combat Veteran to Growth Architect(1:39) – GTM Gone Wrong: Real-World Horror Stories(5:52) – What Is a Go-To-Market Motion, Really?(7:17) – When Motions Collide(8:33) – Leadership Fails and GTM Breakdown(13:26) – Inside the Strike Operating System(19:51) – Signal Calibration: Finding What Really Moves the Needle(22:47) – Marketing 2.0: From Arts & Crafts to Operational Powerhouse(26:09) – Avoiding the GTM Trap: Common Pitfalls to Watch For(31:43) – Give It Time: The Patience Behind Real Transformation(33:16) – The People Behind the Process(35:12) – Garrath's Golden Rule: Discipline Over Dollars(36:41) – Building the Future: Gut Instinct, Fundamentals, and Human Connection(39:33) – Scaling Revenue: From 0 to $10K MRR and Beyond(44:15) – Wrapping Up: Key Takeaways + Connect with Garrath Robinson

    My Business On Purpose
Hate Conflict? 10 Ways To Confront Tough Situations

    My Business On Purpose

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2025 10:24

Well, there are some things that I love in life and there are some things that I want to avoid like the plague. Conflict is one of those. I am not one of those that looks to run into conflict. In fact, I would classify myself as pretty conflict averse. But I've had to learn over time that leadership requires these things to come out eventually. That doesn't mean I've done them great. Actually, this picture you see—if you're watching on video—I got from a buddy of mine, Rob Shreve. Don't worry, audio listeners, I'll walk through it. Rob has this book by John Maxwell, a leadership guy who talks about leadership principles. It's a daily read, and today's was especially interesting and helpful. I wanted to share it with some commentary on how to lean into conflict. Before we go through the list, I want to bring your attention to a study I went through earlier this year. It was specifically about men, but I think we can broaden it to leaders in general. There are three “biases” they mentioned: Move towards – having the bias to move toward a thing. Be responsible for – taking responsibility even if it's not your fault. Depend on – learning to rely on others. We live in a culture, especially in the U.S., that celebrates independence. Independence isn't wrong, but we are inherently dependent beings. It's woven into who we are as humans. Learning how to depend on others is key. Right now, I'm depending on this list to help me move toward confrontation. Why? Because there's a statement that says: As you endure divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as His own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? If you're not disciplined, as He does all of His children, it means you're illegitimate and not really His children at all. Discipline can actually show care, concern, and legitimacy when offered thoughtfully. Here's the list from Maxwell, with my thoughts: 1. Confront ASAP. This goes back to the leadership bias of moving towards. Last week I noticed a situation that came to a head, and I decided to address it the next day. The longer you let it fester, the worse it gets. 2. Address the wrong action, not the person. Focus on the task or action that was wrong, not on labeling the person. This allows both of you to look at the issue together instead of turning it into a personal attack. 3. Confront only what the person can change. Sometimes people say they can't change something, but often they can. Look at the heart and mindset. Some core wiring may not be alterable, but most issues of the heart can change. 4. Give the person the benefit of the doubt. Ask yourself: If I let this person go, would they be surprised? That question often reveals whether you've done everything to equip them to succeed. 5. Be specific. Be careful here—too many examples can give the other person a way to deflect or create chaos. Stay focused on what matters. 6. Avoid sarcasm. I love sarcasm, but it's rarely helpful. It often makes the other person feel worse, even if it gets a laugh. The root of the word “sarcasm” comes from the Greek sarx (flesh) and means “to tear flesh.” It's the use of irony to mock or convey contempt. 7. Avoid words like “always” and “never.” It's rarely true that something happens always or never. Be thoughtful with words—they can light things on fire if we're not careful. 8. If appropriate, tell the person how you feel about what was done wrong. Saying “I feel” or “I see” communicates perspective, even if it's not the absolute truth. 9. Give the person a game plan to fix the problem. Even better—work together to create it, but get buy-in first. 10. Affirm them as a person and as a friend. Remind them you appreciate them and that a mistake in a task doesn't diminish their value or contribution. I found this list to be a helpful tool. A pastor once said, “I don't ever want to be convicted of not moving towards a situation. Even if I'm wrong, I want to be convicted of moving toward it.” I've started telling my wife, “I think I'm going to lean into this, but there's a 50/50 chance I might be wrong.” So, go through this list and ask yourself: Which of these areas do I struggle with most? Do I move toward issues or avoid them? Do I use sarcasm? The goal is to confront in a way that builds up, not tears down. And somewhere after those things were over, I lost myself. Not intentionally, but simply because I didn't have anything to work towards anymore. I neglected my health, my joy, my self care — all because I didn't have a “reason” to take care of me.In this episode, I'm opening up about what it's like to lose your identity in the absence of a goal, the slow unraveling of self-discipline, and the dangerous trap of only showing up for yourself when there's something to prove. The Lord Is My Shepherd: Life Is Better This WayText: Psalm 23Main Idea: When Christ is truly your Shepherd, you lack nothing—and life takes on a new peace, purpose, and power.IntroductionThe “Danger” of FamiliaritySteve Farrar calls Psalm 23 one of the most dangerous Psalms because we've grown too familiar with it.Familiarity can dull the meaning and power of God's Word.Fresh Eyes: Today we'll revisit this passage and let it cut through the routine, so it can transform our lives.I. When Christ Is Our Shepherd, Our Desires Shift (Psalm 23:1)Bold Declaration: “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.”Not just words—this is a life posture.Shift in Desires: No need for worldly success, constant validation, or anxious striving.Reality Check: Many claim Jesus is their foundation but live in panic when trials hit.Sheep Analogy: Sheep are defenseless, prone to filth, and often foolish—completely dependent on their shepherd.Illustration: Sheep in a ditch rescued, then immediately jumping back in—just like us sometimes.Application: Depend fully on the Shepherd; repent quickly when you fail. (James 3:8–10)II. The Danger of Misplaced Expectations (Psalm 23:2–3)In Marriage: Many love transactionally, expecting a “return” for service. When expectations aren't met, frustration leads to anger, bitterness, and destruction.Biblical Order: When Christ is center—peace follows. He leads, restores, guides.III. God Is Not Just Good in Theory—He's Good in Practice (Psalm 23:4)Living Like He's Good:Marriage becomes discipleship, not just maintenance.Parenting becomes shepherding hearts, not just correcting behavior.Church becomes joy, not duty.In Valleys: Life's darkest moments don't bring fear because the Shepherd is near.IV. The Shepherd's Presence Is Our Power (Psalm 23:4–5)Our Limits: We aren't strong, wise, or patient enough—but He is.Order of the Shepherd's Care:He leads, protects, disciplines, prepares, pursues.Discipline as Love: Like a shepherd breaking a wandering sheep's leg to save it.Christ's discipline means you belong to Him (Hebrews 12:6).Knowing His Voice (John 10:24–29): Sheep know the shepherd because they're constantly with Him.V. Final Challenge: Recenter Your Life on Jesus (Psalm 23:6)Root Problems: Marriages, joy, and peace often fail because Jesus is not at the center.Life-Altering Reality: “I shall not want” is not a coffee mug slogan—it's a way of life.Stop placing on others what only Christ can fulfill.Let Christ be your Shepherd—in home, marriage, business, and daily life. Conclusion & InvitationIf Jesus is your Shepherd:Follow Him.Trust Him.Build your life on Him alone.Promise: “I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” is for today—not just eternity.Life is better this way.Prayer.

He earned a degree in Physics from Duquesne University. Ed has gained recognition for overcoming personal struggles with addiction and poverty. We recorded this at our 2025 Learning Leader Growth Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona. He's the author of Hard Lessons From The Hurt Business.  Notes: Key Learnings The Heaviest Weight at the Gym is the Front Door – Starting is often the hardest part. "Zero to one is the hardest part" in any endeavor. Once you begin, momentum builds, but that first step requires the most effort. How You Feel is Irrelevant – "How you feel about doing something is irrelevant. If it is vital to your success, you've gotta bump to the wall a bunch of times." Discipline isn't about motivation—it's about doing what's necessary regardless of feelings. Sobriety: The Hardest Fight – 13+ years sober, describing it as "the hardest fight I've ever had." The turning point came during basic training when he built an identity completely free of alcohol for the first time in his adult life. From Being Liked to Being Respected – "When people like you, they want to party with you... When people respect you, you start getting invited back to family events." Shifted focus from seeking approval through partying to earning respect through character. The Baby Shower Revelation – Breakthrough moment when friends showed up with gifts for his unborn child, "all because he is my human." Realized people genuinely cared about him, which became the foundation for believing he mattered. Taking Ownership vs. Playing Victim – "A judge and a jury do not care about my terrible upbringing if I commit a crime." Despite growing up next to a crack house with family addiction issues, I chose accountability over excuses. Net Positive Impact Philosophy – Goal with raising children: "Make sure they are a net positive, they make things better. At the very least, let's make sure they don't mess anything up." Everyone has an impact on the world for better or worse. Practice Until You Can't Forget – Boxing taught the overlearning principle: going beyond basic competency to automatic response. "We practice until we can't forget... Either you get it or you'll make a mistake, and you probably won't make the mistake more than twice." Tolerance for Boredom Builds Excellence – "If you can be bored, you can go really far because a lot of it is just repetition of really basic things." Elite performers master fundamentals through unglamorous repetition. Body Language Shapes Internal State – "You smile, you feel happy... puff up your chest and the testosterone flows." Physical presentation affects how you feel internally and influences others around you. Fear vs. Responsibility Evolution – Early motivation came from fear of embarrassment; current motivation comes from a sense of responsibility to others. Shift from avoiding personal failure to ensuring others are taken care of. Redefining "At Your Best" – Past definition: having enough money, time, and no worries. Current definition: "Everyone in the house is taken care of." Evolution from internal satisfaction to external impact. Strategic Hardship Introduction – For teaching children without trauma: "Introduce hardships strategically and with awareness." Like weight training—incremental challenges build strength; too much too soon causes injury. Useful Quotes: "How you feel about doing something is irrelevant. If it is vital to your success, you've gotta bump to the wall a bunch of times." "The heaviest weight at the gym is the front door." "When people like you, they want to party with you... When people respect you, you start getting invited back to family events." "You have an impact on the world, for better or worse, that makes a huge difference in allowing a person to not destroy themselves." "We practice until we can't forget." "If you can be bored, you can go really far." "I've had my ego dragged through the mud a lot." "What do you want your obituary to say? I didn't just dabble." "When you're completely selfless, then you're fearless. It's the 'what's gonna happen to me' that creates the fear." "Everyone's always either walking in love or fear." "I hope my kid remembers that I was a present happy dude." Life Lessons: Discipline Over Mood – Make decisions based on necessity, not feelings. Success comes from identifying what must be done and executing consistently. Identity Building Without Vices – Spend time in environments completely free from your struggles to build new neural pathways and self-concept. Overlearning for Mastery – Practice skills beyond basic competency until they become automatic responses under pressure. Authentic Accountability – Find mentors who "live what they're yelling at you about." Real influence comes from demonstrated behavior, not just words. Incremental Challenge Builds Resilience – Introduce difficulties gradually to build strength rather than overwhelming with too much too soon. Present Moment Parenting – Model calm behavior during stressful situations because children mirror your emotional energy. External Focus Creates Fulfillment – Shift from personal satisfaction to ensuring others are taken care of for a deeper sense of purpose. Childhood Dreams Reveal True Interests – "What did you want to do when you were 10-12?" Often reveals authentic passions before social conditioning. Breaking Generational Cycles – Consciously choose different patterns than your upbringing to create better outcomes for the next generation. Humility Through Struggle – Getting "ego dragged through the mud" builds character and perspective that success alone cannot provide. Luck Recognition Builds Gratitude – "The only difference between you and me is that I was lucky." Understanding the role of circumstances builds empathy.   Apply to be part of my next Learning Leader Circle.
