This is the first in a series where we aim to learn more about Irish solar trends. Who are we talking to, is it a logical journey to what you do now? You're speaking to Morgan Pierce, the founder and CEO of SolarSmart. My journey to solar started with a passion for sustainability and a belief that solar energy should be accessible for everyone. I don't come from a typical engineering background, but I've always been driven by innovation and environmental impact. I founded the company in late 2020 as a result of seeing a gap in the Irish market for a customer-first approach to the solar energy market. So it's been a logical, if unconventional, path that led me here. Irish Solar Trends with Morgan Pierce, SolarSmart It looks like solar installations was something that gradually grew and evolved as a business for you - would this be a fair description of the evolution of your company? Absolutely. SolarSmart started small, with me, a vision, and commitment to help people understand the power and practicality of solar. It grew steadily through word of mouth, education and trust. We've now installed over 1,300 solar systems across Ireland. Our evolution reflects increasing awareness and increasing confidence in solar as a viable solution for Irish homes and businesses Does Ireland get as much / more / less solar than other countries in Europe? Ireland gets less solar irradiation compared to countries like Spain or Italy, but it's still very viable here. A little known fact is that solar panels produce more electricity in temperatures of 25 celsius and lower! So, combined with our very long summer days and temperate climate, solar production in summer creates significant credit on your electricity bill which you take into the winter to offset when the solar is not as productive. Plus, thanks to advancements in panel technology, even on cloudy days, panels generate significant energy. Germany has a very successful solar industry with similar sunlight levels to Ireland. The key is designing each system specifically for the Irish climate, which is something we specialise in at SolarSmart. How much energy does a typical three bed house need, and therefore how many panels, batteries and kit would they need? A typical three bed house in Ireland uses on average 4,500 kWh per year. A well-designed solar system for a home like this would typically include 10 panels. This system size also allows homeowners to avail of the maximum SEAI solar PV grant of €1,800. Adding a battery, usually 5 or 10 kWh in capacity allows you to store surplus energy for use at night. A hot water immersion diverter also helps maximise your self-consumption and reduce your bills. What are the approximate costs for this, and the payback period? The approximate cost for a fully installed 4kWp residential system including 10 panels, an inverter and a 5kW battery is €8,600. This is after the SEAI grant. The payback period depends on the home's energy usage and system size, but it typically falls between 4 and 6 years. Have these costs come down as solar panel technology has improved? Yes, significantly. Over the past decade, the cost of solar panels has dropped more than 70%, while efficiency has increased. Batteries have also become more affordable and efficient, helping homeowners use more of their own solar energy. This trend in battery affordability is likely to continue as global demand and battery innovation improves. What tips would you give to people thinking of installing solar? Talk to a reputable installer who will design a system to match your energy needs. Look for an SEAI-registered installer, check out their online reviews, e.g. on Trustpilot, and ask questions. Our installation teams are employees; this is also key. Finally, a solid solar partner is not pushy and prioritises education and transparency. In this illuminating episode we speak with Dr. Filippa Juul. An epidemiologist and leading researcher on the impact of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) on human health. Together, we unpack what ultra-processed really means, why it's not just about calories or macros, and how these foods are stealthily contributing to the global rise in obesity, chronic illness, and food addiction. Dr. Filippa Juul is a nutritional epidemiologist and Faculty Fellow at the Department of Public Health Policy and Management at the New York University School of Global Public Health (NYU GPH). She earned her PhD in Epidemiology from NYU GPH in 2020, following a MSc in Public Health Nutrition from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and a BA in Nutrition and Dietetics from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in Spain. Dr. Juul's research focuses on improving cardiometabolic health outcomes at the population level, with a particular interest in the role of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) in diet quality, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. She utilizes large U.S. population studies to examine these associations and is also exploring the biological mechanisms underlying the impact of UPFs on cardiometabolic health.  Dr. Juul explains the NOVA classification system, dives into recent groundbreaking studies, and offers insights into why UPFs are so difficult to resist—and what we can do about it, both individually and at the policy level. When a person recognizes Hashem's involvement in his life, he has a mitzvah not only to thank Hashem, but to also sing His praises. The pasuk says: " שִׁירוּ לוֹ זַמְּרוּ לוֹ שִׂיחוּ בְּכָל נִפְלְאוֹתָיו " — "Sing to Him, make music to Him, speak of all His wonders." (Divrei HaYamim I 16:9) We are meant to speak joyfully about the wondrous things Hashem does for us. Baruch Hashem, I have the zechut to hear so many stories of how people felt Hashem's hand in their lives. There's an email address where people send in their stories( livingemunah123@gmail.com ). I would like to share just a few that I recently received. What's so beautiful about some of these stories is how Hashem is involved even in the most mundane of tasks — something as simple as pressing a button. A woman who is an English teacher related that she had been working for years on developing an app to help students drill their English vocabulary. It was a long and exhausting process, and she hoped to secure a government tender that would allow her to sell the app to schools across Israel, helping her cover the high costs. But she hit a roadblock — the Ministry of Education wouldn't provide vendors with a list of schools and contact information. How could she sell her product without spending all her time manually searching for schools? Recently, while trying to look up a phone number on her computer — for the purpose of suggesting a shidduch — she accidentally pressed the wrong button. A file suddenly downloaded onto her computer. Curious, she opened it. To her shock, it was an Excel sheet with over 1,500 religious schools in Israel, complete with all their contact information. She had never even heard of such a list. But she didn't need to — Hashem had guided her fingers to press the exact button she needed. Another woman shared a story from a recent trip to Spain in late April. A nationwide power outage struck in the early afternoon, right as she and her husband were getting ready to catch a train to their next destination. The night before, she had purchased what she thought were train tickets via the railway app. But when she opened the app to confirm the departure time, she realized she had mistakenly bought bus tickets instead. She didn't even know that buses could be booked through the app! As it turned out, the train system had completely shut down due to the power outage, leaving passengers stuck for hours in the heat. Meanwhile, she and her husband boarded a comfortable, air-conditioned bus and arrived on time with no difficulties. Once again, Hashem had guided someone to press exactly the right button. A man submitted a powerful story about a fire that broke out a few weeks ago in fields near Beit Shemesh. He sent in a picture showing completely blackened, burnt fields surrounding a single patch of lush green. That green patch belonged to Moshav Matityahu — a religious moshav who keep Shemitah. The field manager was there as the flames approached. The trees — etrogim and rimonim — were in serious danger. But then, miraculously, the flames veered, forming a half-circle around this field, and moved on to burn the next one. Not a single tree of theirs was singed. It was clearly a bracha earned in the merit of keeping Shemitah. Tragically, the surrounding fields — which were not observing Shemitah — were all burned. Hashem can and does bless us in countless ways, sometimes in very visible miracles. One final story. A man had a specialist appointment last year. The waiting room had televisions playing on all sides, the volume blasting, and the content was extremely inappropriate. He tried his best not to look, but some of the images caught his eye and became lodged in his mind. He prayed deeply for Hashem to remove those images from his thoughts. A week later, he had a follow-up appointment at the same office. This time, before going, he poured out his heart to Hashem, asking not to be exposed to those same sights again. Miraculously, when he arrived, every screen was malfunctioning. The same clean advertisement played on a loop for the entire thirty minutes he was there. Other patients were complaining, but the staff could not fix it. Only he knew that it was an answer to his tefillah. Hashem is helping us constantly. It's our job to recognize His involvement, thank Him, and tell others about it. The more we speak of His wonders, the more aware we become of His presence in our lives — and the more reasons we find to sing His praises.

The Irish song “Wild Rover” was stuck in my head as we started talking about cats. The chorus came around and I started meowing. An idea started growing in my head. What if I parodied a bunch of traditional Irish drinking songs with lyrics all about cats. I wrote my first three songs before the end of October. I then found Ari Koinuma in Austin to help me produce the single. I set up a website at CatDrinkingSongs.com. In December, someone posted the idea to Fark. I had 20,000 website hits in one day and hundreds of comments. I knew this was a great idea. In May of 2005, I launched a podcast to help raise money for a CD of Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. Early on a Sunday morning in February in the Spanish seaside town of Benalmadena, Catalina, a 48-year-old mother of four, was killed at home – the building was set on fire. Her ex-partner was arrested and remains in custody. In January, Lina – as she was known to her family and friends – had reported her ex-partner to the police for ill-treatment and threatening behaviour. And by doing so, she became one of around 100,000 cases of gender-based violence active in Spain's VioGen system.VioGen is an algorithm used by the police – it's a risk assessment tool. Based on a woman's answers to a series of questions, it calculates the likelihood she will be attacked again so police resources can be allocated to protect those most in danger. The level of risk could be negligible, low, medium, high or extreme. Lina was recorded as being at ‘medium' risk of a further attack by the man who was her ex-partner. Three weeks later, she was dead. VioGen's critics are concerned about the number of women registered on the system who are then murdered by men who are former or current partners.
