FOLLOW UP starts with the realization that Spotify Wrapped thinks we are 82 years old, which honestly feels accurate, followed by a massive shout out to Bama Bryan on Bluesky for listening to us for over 3,000 minutes. We look at the grim stats from the Department of Government Efficiency regarding USAID deaths, then move to IN THE NEWS where the KALSHI CEO wants to monetize "any difference in opinion" because gambling on the news is the future. PALANTIR CEO Alex Karp claims making war crimes constitutional is bad for business, META STARTS KICKING AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN OFF their platforms to avoid fines, and TETHER gets a "weak" rating while U.S. BANK calls the ability to freeze stablecoins "appealing." We discuss the LEAK CONFIRMS OPENAI IS PREPARING ADS for ChatGPT while SAM ALTMAN DECLARES 'CODE RED' to catch up to Google. We wrap up the news with the HUMAN ROBOT HYPE SCARING CHINA, a sad story where CHILDREN SOB AS WAYMO RUNS OVER DOG, a video showing a WAYMO SELF-DRIVING TAXI TAKES PASSENGER THROUGH ACTIVE POLICE SCENE, and the fact that PASSENGERS FACE DISRUPTION AS AIRBUS UPDATES THOUSANDS OF PLANES due to solar flares. In MEDIA CANDY, the industry is shaking because NETFLIX BUYS WARNER BROS. The internet decides what's for dinner. Ruby Tandoh is the author of the new book, All Consuming: Why We Eat the Way We Eat Now. A stint on the Great British Bake Off when she was in college launched her into the world of cookbooks — increasingly irrelevant in a world where we're more likely to turn to Google for a recipe than turn to our bookshelves — and provided her an education in how pop culture stokes our cravings. She takes Ben and Amory on a journey from the surprising history of AllRecipes and the "world's best lasagna," to the TikTok food trends of today. (Spoiler: they don't always taste particularly good.) Show notes: All Consuming: Why We Eat the Way We Eat Now Credits: This episode was produced by Grace Tatter and hosted by Ben Brock Johnson and Amory Sivertson. It was edited by Meg Cramer. Mix and sound design by Emily Jankowski.
Gotta love the internet.
In this conversation, Stewart Alsop sits down with Ken Lowry to explore a wide sweep of themes running through Christianity, Protestant vs. Catholic vs. Orthodox traditions, the nature of spirits and telos, theosis and enlightenment, information technology, identity, privacy, sexuality, the New Age “Rainbow Bridge,” paganism, Buddhism, Vedanta, and the unfolding meaning crisis; listeners who want to follow more of Ken's work can find him on his YouTube channel Climbing Mount Sophia and on Twitter under KenLowry8.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 Christianity's tangled history surfaces as Stewart Alsop and Ken Lowry unpack Luther, indulgences, mediation, and the printing-press information shift.05:00 Luther's encounters with the devil lead into talk of perception, hallucination, and spiritual influence on “main-character” lives.10:00 Protestant vs. Catholic vs. Orthodox worship styles highlight telos, Eucharist, liturgy, embodiment, and teaching as information.15:00 The Church as a living spirit emerges, tied to hierarchy, purpose, and Michael Levin's bioelectric patterns shaping form.20:00 Spirits, goals, Dodgers-as-spirit, and Christ as the highest ordering spirit frame meaning and participation.25:00 Identity, self, soul, privacy, intimacy, and the internet's collapse of boundaries reshape inner life.30:00 New Age, Rainbow Bridge, Hawkins' calibration, truth-testing, and spiritual discernment enter the story.35:00 Stewart's path back to Christianity opens discussion of enlightenment, Protestant legalism, Orthodox theosis, and healing.40:00 Emptiness, relationality, Trinity, and personhood bridge Buddhism and mystical Christianity.45:00 Suffering, desire, higher spirits, and orientation toward the real sharpen the contrast between simulation and reality.50:00 Technology, bodies, AI, and simulated worlds raise questions of telos, meaning, and modern escape.55:00 Neo-paganism, Hindu hierarchy of gods, Vedanta, and the need for a personal God lead toward Jesus as historical revelation.01:00:00 Buddha, enlightenment, theosis, the post-1945 world, Hitler as negative pole, and goodness as purpose close the inquiry.Key InsightsMediation and information shape the Church. Ken Lowry highlights how the printing press didn't just spread ideas—it restructured Christian life by shifting mediation. Once information became accessible, individuals became the “interface” with Christ, fundamentally changing Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox trajectories and the modern crisis of religious choice. The Protestant–Catholic–Orthodox split hinges on telos. Protestantism orients the service around teaching and information, while Catholic and Orthodox traditions culminate in the Eucharist, embodiment, and liturgy. This difference expresses two visions of what humans are doing in church: receiving ideas or participating in a transformative ritual that shapes the whole person.Spirits, telos, and hierarchy offer a map of reality. Ken frames spirits as real intelligible goals that pull people into coordinated action—seen as clearly in a baseball team as in a nation. Christ is the highest spirit because aiming toward Him properly orders all lower goals, giving a coherent vertical structure to meaning.Identity, privacy, and intimacy have transformed under the internet. The shift from soul → self → identity tracks changes in information technology. The internet collapses boundaries, creating unprecedented exposure while weakening the inherent privacy of intimate realities such as genuine lovemaking, which Ken argues can't be made public without destroying its nature.New Age influences and Hawkins' calibration reflect a search for truth. Stewart's encounters with the Rainbow Bridge world, David Hawkins' muscle-testing epistemology, and the escape from scientistic secularism reveal a cultural hunger for spiritual discernment in the absence of shared metaphysical grounding.Enlightenment and theosis may be the same mountain. Ken suggests that Buddhist enlightenment and Orthodox theosis aim at the same transformative reality: full communion with what is most real. The difference lies in Jesus as the concrete, personal revelation of God, offering a relational path rather than pure negation or emptiness.Secularism is shaped by powerfully negative telos. Ken argues that the modern world orients itself not toward the Good revealed in Christ but away from the Evil revealed in Hitler. Moving away from evil as a primary aim produces confusion, because only a positive vision of the Good can order desires, technology, suffering, and the overwhelming power of modern simulations.
Ever wondered what really keeps the Internet running - and what happens when it all goes sideways? The latest Cloudflare outage served up a reality check, exposing just how much of our digital world hangs together with a mix of duct tape, toothpicks, and a whole lot of hope. In this episode we dive into how this outage sent shockwaves through everything from simple website clicks to healthcare payment systems, and why most folks had no idea Cloudflare was even a linchpin for their daily operations. The murder trial of Brian Walshe - the man who's been accused of killing, dismembering, and hiding the body of his wife - began earlier this week. Prosecutors focused on Walshe's alleged internet search history, which included entries inquiring about getting away with murder. Walshe has pleaded guilty to the two lesser charges against him, but maintains he did not murder his wife. Former NYPD Inspector, FOX News Contributor, and Co-host of The Weekly Rap Sheet, Paul Mauro, provides his legal analysis of the trial thus far. Joel Litman, founder/chief investment officer at Altimetry Research, says that investor worries about valuations are overblown because "good data" shows that current conditions are more like the mid-1990s — the middle of a bull market — than 2000 when the Internet bubble burst. He says in the Market Call that with real core earnings growing for a lot of companies, valuations are still reasonable, which is why he says current conditions make for a screaming bull market with several years where it can keep running before investors should get worried and nervous. Brad Neuman, senior vice president/director of market strategy for Alger, says in The Big Interview that if technology spending in artificial intelligence had been removed, the economy would have gone through a recession in the first half of the year, but that also means that a lot of the pressures from a downturn have passed. With the AI boom in "the very early innings," he sees the economy strengthening next year bringing the stock market to higher levels with it. Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, makes a tactical play with a new, actively managed corporate bond fund from a brand-name money manager as his ETF of the Week.
When Suuna Hassan and Madinah Babirah founded Masaka Kids Africana in the Masaka District of Uganda, they hoped to help a handful of orphaned children and other young people living on the streets. They had no way of knowing where their efforts would lead or that one day the whole world would be watching. Directors David Vieira Lopez and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Moses Bwayo (“Bobi Wine: The People's President”) join Ken on the pod to discuss this extraordinary organization, as well as the viral dance videos performed by the children of Masaka that caught the world's attention during the pandemic. David, who was a volunteer at the organization at the time, and Moses, who is himself Ugandan, teamed up to tell the powerful story behind this Internet sensation. To their credit, the filmmakers are just as impressed with what Nabirah and Ian, and other children of Masaka, have to say, as with the dance steps that made these kids famous. In a place where HIV/AIDS has afflicted many thousands of people over the years and left many young people orphaned, Masaka Kids Africana is not just a symbol of hope but a vibrant community that is actively changing young people's lives. “Masaka Kids: A Rhythm Within” will be released on Netflix on December 9th. Happy Thursday, you pop culture junkies. We kick things off by revisiting last week's PCM newsletter, where we dove into menopause in pop culture — and how, finally, it's having its moment. From celebrity conversations to brand campaigns, menopause has gone from whispered to widely amplified, and we love to see it. We also touched again on two delightful cultural nuggets: Ralph Lauren Christmas — what is it and why? Parmigiano Reggiano… with a talent agent! Yes, the cheese. Yes, an actual agent. And yes, this story continues to bring us immeasurable joy. Moving onto this week's topics. You can't scroll TikTok or turn on a streaming service without bumping into Mormon plots, Mormon aesthetics, Mormon family dynamics, Mormon drama and Mormon everything. We explore why Mormon culture is suddenly everywhere and what's driving the current fascination. And a fiancé was pranked by her future in laws and husband into thinking they run a 10K turkey trot on Thanksgiving morning. Right up until they were meant to race she thought she had to do it. The Internet is divided what do you think? And did you know 50 Cent has a docuseries on Netflix on Diddy with never before seen footage. It's. Wild. And everyone has feelings about the Olivia Nuzzi situation — and Brooke has thoughts about those thoughts. Another week, another swirl of pop culture delight, chaos, and cheese representation. Enjoy the episode! Last week's newsletter: https://popculturemondays.com/2025/11/24/ralph-lauren-christmas/ This week's newsletter: https://popculturemondays.com/2025/12/01/mormons/

This week on the Normal Nerds Podcast, Maxwell and Davis deliver a loaded Weekly Anime Recap. They kick things off with My Hero Academia Season 8, Episode 9, talking Deku's questionable haircut, Bakugo refusing to rest, and the Todoroki family's heavy, emotional wrap-up—plus why Endeavor's redemption hits harder than the fandom gives him credit for.Next, the boys rave about Spy x Family Season 3, Episode 9 with Double Starlight Anya, Damien sprinting to her rescue, Becky's chaos, Melinda's unhinged emotional whiplash, and Anya's ego skyrocketing into villain-cape territory. Then they tear into One Punch Man Season 3, Episode 8—a rare episode with decent animation that STILL can't save the season. Flashy Flash's fight pops off, Kid Emperor is actually interesting, but the stiff faces and still frames keep dragging the whole show down. From there, it's pure hype with Tojima Wants to Be a Kamen Rider Episode 9. Tojima lands the punch heard 'round the world, Rider Man goes feral, V3 gives respect where it's due, and the show continues to be one of the season's biggest surprises. They follow it up with the comfy, consistently fun May I Ask You One Last Thing? Episode 10, featuring Scarlet punching monsters into paste, Julius shutting down betrayals instantly, dragon-guy simps going wild, and a war brewing in the background. Then they officially consider dropping SANDA Episode 9, after another episode that leans way too hard into the bizarre. With the series' tone spiraling and its creative lineage showing, they debate if it's even worth continuing. After the main block, they jump into two big highlights of the week:Gachiakuta Episode 21 delivers insane action as Bundus takes on multiple Cleaners at once, Rudo evolves his 3R into a railgun-level weapon, Zodyl reveals his real plan, and Noerde's terrifying return sets up massive consequences. One Piece Episode 1151 goes OFF: Gear 5 Luffy returns, Bonney awakens a Nika-style form of her own, and the Iron Giant finally steps in—setting the stage for one of Egghead's most explosive episodes yet.If you're into big analysis, big fights, and big laughs, this is one of the most packed recaps the guys have ever done.Support the show

Join the Anchoring Truths Podcast for a tour de force from our friend Prof. Josh Blackman. In the height of the politicization of the judicial branch, the federal courts cannot be reformed through unilateral disarmament, argues Blackman. Rather, any federal judicial reform must be bilateral. Blackman lays out a set of ten proposals for reducing the power both the Right and the Left exert through the judiciary based on a law review article he wrote earlier this year. This episode is an adapted webinar co-sponsored with the Center for Religion, Culture, and Democracy of First Liberty Institute.Josh Blackman is a national thought leader on constitutional law and the United States Supreme Court. Josh's work was quoted during two presidential impeachment trials. He has testified before Congress and advises federal and state lawmakers. Josh regularly appears on TV, including NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the BBC. Josh is also a frequent guest on NPR and other syndicated radio programs. He has published commentaries in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and leading national publications. Since 2012, Josh has served as a professor at the South Texas College of Law Houston. He holds the Centennial Chair of Constitutional Law. Josh is the Senior Editor of the Heritage Guide to the Constitution (3rd Edition). Josh has written more than seven dozen law review articles that have been cited more than a thousand times. Josh was selected as the Jurist of the Year by the Texas Journal of Law & Public Policy, received the inaugural Meese III Originalism Award from the Heritage Foundation, and was awarded the Inaugural Joseph Story Award. 主播:Meimei(中国)+ Maelle(法国) 音乐:I Know The Feeling by Jake Miller今天我们要谈的话题非常有趣,但同时又让人有点小震惊——巴黎世家(Balenciaga)推出了一款7000元的塑料袋。01. It's actually just high fashion Balenciaga released (发行、出品) this new bag — shiny, crinkly, rectangular — just like a classic plastic shopping bag (经典塑料购物袋).Shiny /ˈʃaɪni/ adj. This kind of item is often called “normcore” or “ironic fashion”.Normcore:Normcore就是“极简随意风”。 It's definitely been a fashion trend (时尚潮流) lately, but on a more casual (随意的) side. They want to look like they don't care That's ironic (讽刺的) for sure.03. A Collection of “Plastic Bag” in English “塑料袋”英文大集合所以像这种“塑料购物袋”,用英文应该怎么表达呢?1)The most the common type is “plastic bag (塑料袋)” .2)第二种是“walmart bag(沃尔玛袋子)”。 It's just any plastic bag from a grocery store (杂货店).3)There is also “tote bag (帆布袋)” . It's very eco-friendly (对环境非常友好).5)The last one is “shopper (用来形容时尚品牌的大型购物袋)” . 外国网友可能会称它为“a designer shopper(设计师购物袋)” 或者是“a luxury tote(奢侈托特包)”。 04. Why Do People Buy the Pricy Plastic Bag? Since it just looks like a plastic bag,为什么还是会有人买单?因为很多时候奢侈品不一定是为了实用,fashion is about status (地位) and exclusivity (稀有性). 这也是展示identity(身份)的一种方式。And some people buy it for the meme So rich! This is a great pun The Essence of Fashion 时尚的本质:表达与态度主播Meimei还曾看到过some other weird (奇怪的) fashion items on the market as well。 That's literally a luxury stationary It's a very classic movie. 所以这个价值2000美元的回形针仿佛在替蒂芙尼证明:“Look, we're back in the stationery business, but this is who we are now." 我们再次做起了文具生意,但我们是以高定珠宝的身份回归的。这款回形针的核心功能(core function)不止实用(utility), but symbolism(还是象征)。This actually reflects a lot of the brand's history and identity.所以,这2000美元买的不是回形针,而是“拥有一件Tiffany & Co.”的体验和身份认同。看来奢侈品界真的是很会制造话题了。In Europe and many other places, fashion is now being seen as as a form of expression (表达).在中国,也有越来越多年轻人开始“玩梗时尚”,比如DIY衣服,或者一些不太符合主流的设计。It's also a fashion statement (时尚宣言). It's art, and it does not always match everyone's taste. 大家现在看的,不只是款式,还有“态度”。Fashion is also becoming more about fun than formality (时尚也变得更加有趣,而不是拘泥于形式).

A right-wing Christian student at the University of Oklahoma is unfairly punished for being terrible at writing and not engaging with her assignment (the University, obviously, sided with the student.) The state-enforced mourning for Charlie Kirk has backfired, and now the Internet is being overtaken by Kirk memes. The Trump administration's cruel deportation machine continues and we question whether a “look backwards, not forwards” strategy should be employed when, and if, they are voted out of office. On December 2nd, 2025, a Massachusetts State Trooper sat in a courtroom and read — for hours — the Google search history of Brian Walshe. What he typed into that search bar in the hours and days after his wife Ana disappeared tells a story prosecutors say is a confession. "Best ways to dispose of a body." "Hacksaw — best tool for dismembering." "Can baking soda make a dead body smell good." "I am a user on my wife's credit card. She is missing. Can I still use the card." This is the full breakdown of the testimony from the Brian Walshe murder trial — every search, every timestamp, every damning click. Ana Walshe was 39 years old. A mother of three. She was last seen on New Year's Eve 2022. Her body has never been found. Her husband says she died suddenly in their bed. Prosecutors say he killed her, dismembered her, and threw her remains in dumpsters across eastern Massachusetts. The internet remembers everything. #BrianWalshe #AnaWalshe #TrueCrime #MurderTrial #GoogleSearches #Massachusetts #CohassetMurder #DigitalEvidence #TrueCrimeDaily Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
