My guest today is Stephen Shirk an engineer, producer, and owner of Shirk Studio in Chicago. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, he began playing in bands through junior high college at Miami University where he earned a degree in Business and Marketing. In 1998 he moved to New York City to chase his dream of working in a recording studio where he worked at The Hit Factory, Pink Noise and Three Tree Productions as well as assisting on sessions at many legendary NYC facilities like Avatar (Power Station), Clinton, Right Track, and Sound on Sound. Recording in New York also exposed Stephen to a unique artistic community beyond that of music. His collaboration with Nadine Robinson would ultimately land one of his sound designs in the Museum of Modern Art’s Tempo exhibit in 2002. In 2004, Stephen relocated to Chicago to continue producing and recording bands, creating sound for art installations, as well as providing audio services for the advertising community. This was the beginning of SHIRK studios. Through a chance meeting at SXSW in 2006, Stephen partnered with the music blog, HearYa.com, and began recording and filming the HearYa live sessions. The video series featured powerful live in-studio recordings of artists like Alabama Shakes, Delta Spirit, Other Lives, Patterson Hood, White Denim, Strand of Oaks, Rayland Baxter and many more. In 2013 he acquired the building that now houses SHIRK studios in Chicago’s West Town neighbourhood. Firmly planted in Chicago, Stephen records, produces and hosts sessions with some of Chicago’s most celebrated artists as well as those just getting their start. I had the pleasure of spending a day at Shirk studio in 2019 when I hosted a mixing clinic there with Anthony Gravino. We spent the day listening to the beautiful Sphere console and I knew I found a new favourite studio in Chicago. Plus Stephen is the coolest. Thanks to our sponsors! Hey, so glad you could make it! This episode we talk Celebrity Skin, the 1998 crack-at-the-mainstream album by Courtney Love and her band, Hole. Firmly planted in the mystique and fallacy of Hollywood and California, Celebrity Skin serves as a worthy counterpart to the mystique and fallacy of Courtney Love. A hotbed of raw talent, yes… a problematic fave, no doubt, but more than anything else, Love’s defining attribute remains being deeply misunderstood. We look at Courtney before, during and after the album, while exploring other queer aspects of Celebrity Skin and Hole. How to Build Confidence and Visibility Through Speaking “Nobody can teach you confidence, but they can give you the tools to find it within yourself.” Megan Hamilton Megan Hamilton is a classically trained actor. She attended theater school and university. Yet after a while, Megan decided to leave the theater industry and commit all of her time to the study of music. During this time, Megan recorded 5 CDs and toured all over Canada and the US. During her life, she's had many opportunities to be up in front of people in different capacities. For the last seven years, Megan has been teaching the four tenants of public speaking to people all over the country. In 2020 she quit teaching at the college level and started her own business coaching people in successful public speaking. “Just remember people want to hear from you.” - Megan Hamilton The four tenants of public speaking include standing, breathing, speaking, and reading. A lot of times, people struggle with how to carry themselves and stand confidently. Women, especially, tend to lean into themselves and take up as little space as possible. Many women have experienced uncomfortable situations where they feel uncomfortable speaking up and taking up space. Still, standing in public speaking refers to how you own your space and feel powerful within their own body. Standing The Alexander Technique introduces the proper way to stand. It’s over 100 years old and was developed by an Australian actor. After a lot of study and research, he discovered the best way to stand for your body includes the following things: Firmly planted feet Unlocked knees and hips A slight pelvic tip forward A chest that is up and opens toward the ceiling Shoulder blades moving slightly apart A neck that is free and easy At first, it may seem a little uncomfortable, but over time you will find this stance helps you be upright and have the least amount of harm on your body. This also helps build authority, both as you see yourself and how others perceive you. “When you [stand] up like that, you will actually feel a power emanating from you because you are up and open.” - Megan Hamilton This can also be adapted to sitting and Zoom meetings. The best way to create the proper sitting stance include: Putting your chair back a little bit Sitting on the edge of your chair with your sit bones balanced Firmly planting your feet flat on the ground Unfolding upper body similar to standing If you stay in Alexander while sitting, it also keeps your energy and engagement up. Breathing There are two types of breathing, deep breathing and controlled breathing, which helps control your voice. Controlled breathing helps you keep grounded and relieve some of the nervousness often associated with speaking. This breathing method includes managing your breathing instead of allowing your lower brain or subconscious brain to manage it for you. When you practice controlled breathing, it sends a signal to your brain that says you are not in flight or fight mode, as well as stops the supply of cortisol and adrenaline racing through your bloodstream. Megan recommends practicing controlled breathing by inhaling for five seconds, holding it for five, and then breathing out for ten. Breathing out slowly is what creates a sense of calmness and focus. Practice this every day so that you can go right into controlled breathing when you are in a high-stress moment. Deep and supportive breathing for your voice includes breathing into your diaphragm and imagining that your lungs have six sides. With each breath, breathe a little deeper. Voice We support our voice using optimum pitch, which is the most supportive way to speak. This means you support your voice in all situations, even the ones you don’t notice or realize. “Your optimum pitch will feel very vibrational. Keep at it, because once you feel it, you’ll get it.” - Megan Hamilton The best way to find optimum pitch is by taking a really deep breath in through your nose as you fill up your lungs. Then, have it go down deep into your belly, and with the momentum of your open lungs, try to make a sound. See what comes out of you. This can be difficult at first. It’s essential to allow the sound to let go. Since optimum pitch is very vibrational, you should feel the vibrations within your chest, top of your head, or the back of your neck or lower ribs. “Once you find your optimum pitch, you’ll be creating a sense of musicality to your sentences.” - Megan Hamilton Reading We read using a technique called text mapping. This is especially helpful for online videos or Zoom calls. First, write everything out ahead of time. This is especially crucial if you’re writing out instructional videos. It’s essential to be clear about why you are there and what you want to say. By writing things down, you can map out how to vocally say what you’ve written. Then, by text marking, you mark up how to best naturally say it. Megan recommends starting with a breath bar, which looks like a forward slash and placed everywhere there is punctuation. At first, this can seem like a lot of breaths, but it breaks up your speech into more digestible fragments for your audience. It also keeps your pace slow, so you don’t speed through your address. By text mapping, you are deciding ahead of time where to take breaths, which keeps you calm and relaxed. This is a built-in controlled breathing system. Practice your speech over and over in front of a camera. When you read it, you will have that sense of musicality in your sentences, and you’ll also be able to read three to five words ahead, which keeps your comments flowing as you look up to see your audience. “Eye contact makes us feel seen in this strange digital realm.” - Megan Hamilton While there isn’t anything fancy about all of this practical stuff, it allows you to be yourself, visible, and confident. Once you know the system, you can use it all the time, and you’ll notice an improvement in how you speak to others and will have the tools needed to be confident. How has philosophy transformed human knowledge and the world we live in? Philosophical investigation is the root of all human knowledge. Developing new concepts, reinterpreting old truths, and reconceptualizing fundamental questions, philosophy has progressed―and driven human progress―for more than two millennia. In short, we live in a world philosophy made. In this concise history of philosophy's world-shaping impact, Scott Soames demonstrates that the modern world―including its science, technology, and politics―simply would not be possible without the accomplishments of philosophy. Firmly rebutting the misconception of philosophy as ivory-tower thinking, in The World Philosophy Made: From Plato to the Digital Age (Princeton University Press, 2019) Scott Soames traces its essential contributions to fields as diverse as law and logic, psychology and economics, relativity and rational decision theory. Beginning with the giants of ancient Greek philosophy, The World Philosophy Made chronicles the achievements of the great thinkers, from the medieval and early modern eras to the present. It explores how philosophy has shaped our language, science, mathematics, religion, culture, morality, education, and politics, as well as our understanding of ourselves. Philosophy's idea of rational inquiry as the key to theoretical knowledge and practical wisdom has transformed the world in which we live. From the laws that govern society to the digital technology that permeates modern life, philosophy has opened up new possibilities and set us on more productive paths. The World Philosophy Made explains and illuminates as never before the inexhaustible richness of philosophy and its influence on our individual and collective lives. Scott Soames is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His many books include Philosophical Analysis in the Twentieth Century; The Analytic Tradition in Philosophy, volumes one and two; and Analytic Philosophy in America (all Princeton). He lives in Marina Del Rey, California. Mark Molloy is the reviews editor at MAKE: A Literary Magazine. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Another quick solo daily dose of Mitch Ping today. I speak about 3 things: 1. The unknown (chaos, challenge, "bad") 2. The Knower (balance, wisdom, inspiration, love, presence, gratitude) 3. The Known (order, support, "good") What is the big problem in your life that you want to dedicate to solving? That problem represents the size and fury of the dragon that you must slay. That dragon is protecting a worthy treasure that is equal to the amount of challenge that you are willing to face. Identify that dragon, and chart a course into the unknown. Firmly plant one foot in what you know, so that you can step the other into the unknown. Embrace the journey towards a higher purpose and meaningful life. As you grow stronger on your journey, the dragon that is waiting for you will also grow stronger. The path that you are walking down will also start to evolve and challenge you more in an attempt to slow you down. The most fun thing about your journey is that it's never going to be over. When you think you have completed your journey... You have merely completed a small chapter. As the chapters go deeper, the feelings of meaning also grow. As the chapters go deeper, your own personal character develops stronger, and more inspired. You can now take on bigger challenges that are even more fulfilling and provide you with even more purpose. What is the book that you are writing for yourself? What is the dragon that you are willing to go on the heroes journey for? Make the most of your life and seek to live at the border of the known and unknown. That is where you will have the most points of inspiration, love, presence, gratitude and wisdom.

Firmly planted in midair. That’s an adequate description of what the world is going through right now. And it is also a realistic expectation of what following Jesus really looks like. This week’s simple podcast explores that theme. We hope it is an encouragement to you in this difficult season. We have an album recommendation (Andrew Peterson’s “Light For the Lost Boy”), an upside down quote to reset your perspective, a mesmerizing adventure movie to check out (Amazon Prime’s “The Aeronauts”), and an encounter with Jesus in the gospel of Luke. “Redemption’s Table” has been set for you. Thanks for joining us.

At the end of the day, health care should be about helping patients find their way to health while doctors, nurses, and other clinicians don’t burn out in the process. It’s becoming increasingly indisputable that the way to get to this North Star efficiently is through human-centered health care. Human-centered health care is a term coined by Dr. Sylvia Romm, and it’s a play on the term customer-centered design. How do we innovate? How do we use technology to intensify the human experience for both provider and patient? How do we rid ourselves of friction points and create a continuum of care that is sticky and makes getting healthy as enjoyable as Instagram? In this health care podcast, I speak with Sylvia Romm. She’s an MD and an MPH with a background as a researcher and a telemedicine entrepreneur prior to coming to Atlantic Health System as their chief innovation officer. We talk in this podcast about human-centered health care—what this means, what the success factors are, and how to make it happen. We also take into account the assorted challenges to overcome on the way there. This interview was recorded moments before COVID-19, and I say that as a good thing. Dr. Romm brings up telehealth as, let’s just say, a first step toward actuating human-centered design in health care. Clearly in the past, that was quite a hurdle. No longer. So, those health systems or you other stakeholders in the mix who have gotten the telehealth thing nailed, listen on for ways that you can leverage your success. And for those of you who haven’t, well, here’s a little extra motivation. You can learn more by connecting with Dr. Romm on Twitter at @sylvia_romm. Sylvia Romm, MD, MPH, is driven by a passion for transforming health care delivery to patients and communities. She brings her background and expertise as a clinician and an entrepreneur to her role as chief innovation officer for Atlantic Health System. Firmly believing that a patient-centered focus is vital to health care innovation, Dr. Romm works with Atlantic Health System’s team members and physicians to find new ways to improve access to high-quality, affordable care. She also forges relationships with local and national innovation partners and works to expand the organization’s research profile. Dr. Romm is an avid author and speaker in the areas of health care, technology, and health information technology (IT) policy. She has written articles for various publications—including NEJM Catalyst, Forbes, KevinMD, and the Huffington Post—and was named one of Fierce Healthcare’s 8 Influential Women Reshaping Health IT and Becker’s Women in Health IT to Watch in 2020. A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Romm has served in a variety of clinical leadership roles throughout her residency and as a hospitalist. Before joining Atlantic Health System, she was vice president of clinical transformation for American Well, the largest video-based telemedicine company in the United States. In addition, she was the founder of MilkOnTap, the nation’s first telehealth company focused on the needs of nursing mothers and lactation support. Dr. Romm earned her Master of Public Health in global health from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. She holds a medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and completed her residency in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital. 02:18 How Dr. Romm’s background in research, public policy, and being a pediatric hospitalist intertwine to create great innovation strategies. 03:22 “How do we look at populations?” 03:31 “It’s really about affecting the system in its entirety.” 04:33 What human-centered health care means. 06:36 “You’re only as effective as the rapport that you build with [this] person.” 08:05 “What do people really need … but also, what do they find valuable?” 09:42 How data are folded into human-centered health care. 11:55 “The endgame is to figure out … how to have a better experience.” 12:39 How this fits into the quadruple aim. 17:19 “We are going to have to earn and learn agility.” 19:38 What has the most promise in deepening the connection between patients and providers. 20:32 “Is this about you, and how do we know … how people outside feel about creating a relationship?” 23:29 Is there a best practice for furthering the patient/doctor relationship from afar? 24:24 The need for a variety of approaches to patient/doctor connections. 27:30 What innovation initiatives need to be successful. 28:07 “People have to understand the ‘why.’” 29:38 The classic tenets of change management. 30:02 A challenge Dr. Romm is proud of having solved. 31:56 Secret weapon: collaboration. Samantha has been a performer her whole life – “I sang for 50 cents at weddings and a dollar at funerals from when I was a little girl. I sang backup for MC Hammer and with Joan Sutherland at the Australia Opera. I’ve led shows and developed my own. I’ve always been happiest on a stage but I’ve also been stuck in “people pleaser and approval” mode and that’s taken its toll. It even lead me to dropping the dream of being a performer for the “sensible” career option of accounting on the behest of my family. Over the years Sam invested so much time and energy checking, testing, showing different pieces of herself to different groups to fit in and be seen in the way she felt she needed to be. It was exhausting. And when this is your focus, you begin to lose track of who you really are. But Sam has now interrupted this cycle. She chose to shift her gaze, to weave all the pieces of her into a whole. She began to approve of herself and appreciating where she’d come from, so she would never need to fit in anywhere again. She has proactively created a new stage for her life, one where confidence and charisma intersect. She truly belongs and it’s extraordinary. Show Notes You can break free of the conditioning of your past and chose a new path forward Firmly reject the “don’t be too big for your boots” judgments that might be levelled at you. Choose to shine. Confidence is not ego. It’s about how you feel within yourself. Charisma is about your ability to influence and there are 4 types – Kindness (Dalai Lama), Visionary (Steve Jobs) Focused (Oprah) and Authority (Churchill) How do you tap into Charisma when you’re just not feeling it? Mindfulness, deep breathing, visualisation and a clear focus on those you want to help be the best they can be. Imagine yourself pulling on your coat of charisma! Perfectionism can paralyse you – perfect is the enemy of good. Let it go and embrace spontaneity (this was a core understanding that came from Sam’s “365 Days of Facebook Live when she had to quieten her internal dialogue, put aside the spreadsheet of carefully planned content went out the window and replace it with authenticity). Have the courage to discover that all you need in inside of you – you just need to take a small risk, unlock yourself for that confidence to begin to flow…because what you focus on grows Samantha Leith Samantha Leith is a Woman on A Mission. Pivot By Louie Marsh, 12-29-2019 1) It helps to be MOVING to change direction. 6 And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. Acts 16:6-8 (ESV) 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. Hebrews 11:8 (ESV) 2) I must plant my foot – 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. Luke 19:4-6 (ESV) COMMIT to the change. 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” 9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:8-10 (ESV) Firmly on solid ground – GOD WORD 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35 (ESV) 3) Choose a NEW direction. 18 “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19 (ESV) 16 Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ Jeremiah 6:16 (ESV) 4) I need to put my ALL into it. 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:59-62 (ESV) 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV) 5) I should be prepared to PIVOT again! 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. Acts 16:9-10 (ESV)

Don’t say Christmas…. or Black Friday… or nausea. Ok, you’re probably all saying that because that’s where our minds go when asked that question. Children’s eyes are now FIRMLY fixed on the many benefits of Christmas. Our eyes… (assuming everyone reading this is mostly an adult), should be fixed on the truest benefit we’ve received … The post What comes after Thanksgiving? appeared first on Woodruff Road Christian Church.

Welcome to the show this week where we introduce you to Tina-Marie. Her music is low-key, it's funky, smooth, sexy and very cool. We're lucky enough to be able to share this with our listenership around the globe and we hope you enjoy her slick and enticing groove. But it's not all about Tina-Marie in the show, Tobin has a choral delight that is sure to blow off your socks. OK, we get it, you're turned off by the word choral right? Well don't be - this is modern, engaging vocal work by Shards. It's a world away from the dusty halls of any long since forgotten congregation and eschews children with bowl cuts in matching cassocks. It's eerily cold, spacious and at the same time joyous to listen to. From the cool grooves of Tina-Marie we move seamlessly to the dark, Americana, alt country sounds of Brown Bird. Sadly Brown Bird are no more as founder David Lamb passed away in 2014 from leukaemia. However, his wife Morgan Eve Swain carried on the legacy and formed her new band, The Huntress and Holder of Hands. Coincidentally, speaking of David Lamb's passing, we learnt at the time of recording of the death of Daniel Johnston. Daniel was a monolith in modern music, had a family connection with us and delighted more people on earth than he would ever know. We've played him on the show before and you can hear him here and on a Wax Time Special here. Tina-Marie - Capetown, Wintergreen - Manchester Wintergreen, a couple of more than decent Manchester lads bring us the notion of clockwork mice. Oscillators, sequencers and laptops feel in stark contrast to the summery vibes that Capetown has delivered today. However, Wintergreen have a timeless feel that will probably happen to Tina-Marie as well. Listen to Gravi-T in 15 years and we're certain that it will have lost none of it's appeal. In fact, on the contrary. Tina-Marie's track is likely to become a staple listen. We can only look forward to her next release with much relish. Did we mention New Music? No? OK, so Pip Blom are featured in Tobin's New Music Shot this week, although you could have had it here 3 weeks ago when it was über-fresh. Firmly off the leash, Tobin also sees fit to bring us another track from one of his favourite genres - electro swing! Summer Sickness Shards Bilgewater Brown Bird Freckles Pip Blom Gravi-T Tina-Marie Fel Del Av Garden Movits! Clockwork Mice Wintergreen Find Sound Shards What Capetown Sound has to say about Tina-Marie Our friends over at Capetown Sound introduced Tina-Marie to the show. She was a big hit here at Record Box HQ and easily made the cut for the show. We didn't have much information on Tina-Marie so Nicole at Capetown Sound sent us the following information. It's short but sweet, as sweet as Tina-Marie's voice. Born and bred in Cape Town, Tina-Marie has been singing and composing since a very young age. She has worked with Nic Hazell, Patric van Blerk and Paul Petersen. Tina has performed with Zolani from Freshlyground years ago, singing Paradise Road. Influenced greatly by Sade, Meschell n D'Degeo Cello, Café Del Mar, Soul Candi and other lounge artists. Finds herself working closely with Wendy Oldfield as producer and Paola de Vito as manager. Firmly situated in the canon of Canadian literature, David Chariandy has written three eloquent books. His first two – Soucouyant: A Novel of Forgetting and Brother draw on his Trinidadian heritage, and centre on the fragility of human ties. Chariandy’s first work of nonfiction is I’ve Been Meaning To Tell You, a letter to his 13-year-old daughter about growing up a black in Canada, and about living out the politics of race. How might God want to be present to you there? 6) Who in my life is God calling me to be present to and love really well? 7) What is one of the basics of the spiritual life and Gospel message that God wants you to get back to? Quote to Ponder: “Do small things with great love” - Saint Teresa of Calcutta Scripture for Lectio Divina - Luke 1:39-56 “At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Surrenderby IbrahimIn sufism, surrender is the prime force that accelerates spiritual growth. Without true and complete surrender, the next phase of learning cannot take place. The teachings of not just sufism but also Zen, Tibetan Buddhism and other true paths are to help prepare the murid (student) to let go of their attachments to the things of this world. Surrender is often misinterpreted to mean giving up responsibility for one’s actions. “My teacher made me do it. My boss made me do it. You made me do it.” Negative to that. Surrender means letting go of your attachments to who you think you are- those parts of you that imagine that you know what is right and wrong, your opinions, ideas, possessions, values, what you think is true and false. Notice I said “attachments” and not the possessions themselves. There is no compulsion in Islam (surrender) and no one is telling you to give up your possessions and live in a commune. A complete human being takes responsibility for their choices and actions – it is what differentiates us from all other life forms on this world- the ability to choose to really screw things up or not is our very own right.A friend of mine was taking her donkey for a walk, and decided that because it was cold and slippery and she had gloves on, it would be better if she looped the donkey’s rope around her wrist. After a mile or so, the donkey decided it was time for a nice run and took off. Firmly attached to the donkey, she ran as fast as she could to keep up, but it was not fast enough, and so she was dragged along on her belly until the donkey decided to stop. Cut, bruised, and needing stitches, she went in to the emergency room and got patched up. She learned that we can tie the cord of attachment to our nafs (ego) or we can tie that same cord to Allah. One is surrendering to our emotional and constantly changing world, or we can be smart and surrender to Allah. There is not much in between. As you know, in western countries the advertisers and their clients want you to surrender to their products and services. Everywhere you look is the name of a product. If you to surrender to the prodding of these advertisers and believe them, no matter how many products you had, though content for perhaps a few minutes, you would not be happy or sufficient for very long. This constant clamoring for your attention is the same way your nafs are continuously at work for themselves. They will not cease until they have your undivided attention. For the nafs, even that is not enough, They will make you their slave. As Sufis, we wish only to do Allah’s will, not our nafs’. That is why we practice and focus on surrendering to Allah. Whose universe is this anyway? Why not give your life back to the one who gave it you?As you are able to identify those parts of you that are habits and attachments, the weaker will be the gravitational pull of the world. What is the best way to surrender and be in the work world? Minute by minute. Also, doing a spiritual practice before work will give you a running start to help you stay in your heart, and allow you to maintain an even keel throughout the day. Take breaks to allow you to return to the heart center, or keep something in your pocket that reminds you of Allah like prayer beads. Picture of your teacher or of nature is helpful, and the micro Zen gardens are evocative of meditational moments of peace. When the action gets too intense to allow you to think clearly, excuse yourself and withdraw. Return to your spiritual practice until you feel capable of being unattached to the outcome. To help us keep our nafs under control, surrender allows humility to permeate our being like incense. The intention behind surrender is to have Allah happSupport the show (http://www.ansarisufiorder.org)
People may not understand or even stop to consider the depth or complexity that goes into designing and building restaurant spaces, but today we’re going to learn a LOT more about this often-overlooked aspect of the hospitality industry. Here to discuss what goes into creating iconic restaurant spaces is Christopher Mercier, the founder and principal designer of (fer) studio. You may have seen (fer)’s handiwork at iconic restaurants like Father’s Office in Culver City, Connie & Ted’s in West Hollywood, Officine Brera in downtown Los Angeles, or Sixth and Mill in Downtown Los Angeles. “What we’re trying to do is really create something that’s unique for the client, and it comes out of the process of working with them to solve their design problems.” –Christopher Mercier (fer) stands for Form, Environment, and Research: the core principles of the firm’s design philosophy. Firmly rooted in contemporary modernism, (fer) studio is dedicated to the idea that Form helps to shape the world, and can have a profound ability to positively impact contemporary experience. Through intensive research and the study of the site and environmental conditions, along with extensive client input, each project is born appropriate and unique. “We’re not interested in someone who just wants to hire us and call them when we’re done; this is an all-in deal. You come in, you hang out in the studio, you design with us, and you work on the models with us.” –Christopher Mercier We also discuss: (fer)’s hands-on and collaborative approach to design The unexpected conditions that come up when converting an existing space How long the design and construction process usually takes Christopher’s architectural studies and apprenticeship in Italy How Christopher describes his style Why the last thing you want to do is “theme” something The components of great design (fer)’s role in up-and-coming “Inglewood Living City” Resources: Learn more at ferstudio.com Connect with Christopher: Facebook | LinkedIn Christopher Mercier’s Bio: Architect Christopher Mercier, AIA, left Frank Gehry’s Gehry Design Group in 2002 to establish his own architecture practice to create (fer) studio: Form, Environment Research. Their goal: to design contemporary spaces for creative clients, and to re-imagine and re-purpose existing structures, preserving their history and character while adapting them to modern use. In projects large and small, (fer) studio has designed upscale homes, hotel and hospitality projects, academic and industrial buildings; they even have plans for a large-scale community development called Cedros Market, near San Diego. Based in Inglewood, California, (fer) studio is at the epicenter of a new wave of urban renewal and restoration. The architecture firm is part of a surge of urban explorers (and intrepid investors) including many writers, artists, designers and entrepreneurs who have discovered the city in their search for affordable live/work spaces and brick-and-mortar retail storefronts. Mercier wants (fer) studio to be an active and vital part of the community’s transformation. “We want to be part of the re-development of Inglewood,” he says. (fer) studio has consulted with the Mayor of Inglewood and other city officials. “Part of the problem has been that it has no sense of place, no sense of identity,” Mercier explains. “We want to take this place, which has a lot of potential- -good scale and walkability, and bring in a transit hub. If people live, work and shop in a community, it is healthy.” (fer) studio is staffed by 14 architects, and divides its talents between residential, commercial and hospitality projects. (fer) studio has designed iconic restaurants such as Father’s Office (Culver City), Connie & Ted’s (West Hollywood) and Officine Brera, an Italian restaurant in downtown Los Angeles’ arts district. Officine Brera is housed in a 1920s industrial building that once was home to the Gas Company. “Officine Brera is a mixture of adaptive reuse set against the influx of a new contemporary geometry that fuses together,” says Mercier. (fer) studio has also designed the newly opened sixth+mill pizzeria and bar in downtown Los Angeles. (fer) studio brings the same design philosophy to its residential projects as well, designing houses for clients in Venice Beach, Fullerton, California, La Canada Flintridge, Santa Monica, and Mulholland Estates in the Hollywood Hills. “It varies from year to year, but our practice usually breaks down to 20 to 30 percent residential, 20 to 30 percent hospitality, and the rest creative office spaces,“ says Mercier. Some of the “creative office spaces” they have designed include a new lobby and reception area for noted business woman Sunnie Kim’s Hana Financial in downtown Los Angeles, and Smashbox Studios in Culver City. Other recent or currently developing projects include The Hayden, a 30,000 square foot creative office adaptive reuse project in Culver City in the Hayden Tract. (fer) studio strives to combine environmental sensitivity and trend-setting vision in every project, no matter how large or small and develop a dialogue between interior and exterior space that morphs through the façade.” Just Forking Around is produced by Podcast Masters
Tastemaker, selector, curator or “your favourite DJ's favourite DJ” is how Lefto is most often described. Each of those descriptions is nothing if not accurate, and Lefto is one of the few who have indisputably earned those titles. The Belgian DJ and producer is one of the most important tastemakers around the world – perhaps his record collection, over 15,000-strong, has something to do with it – and also one of the most respected. One only has to listen to one of his sets (like his mix for Wild City below) to see why. Firmly rooted in jazz and hip-hop, Lefto cultivated his digging sensibilities while working at Belgium's legendary Music Mania record store in his hometown Brussels. A resident on Belgium's leading radio station Studio Brussel since the 90s, Lefto has been a custodian of sorts for new music, and is always one to look ahead and actively seek out new music from all over the world. Lefto is renowned for his wonderfully eclectic sets – different each time – which seamlessly switch between hip-hop, funk, jazz, house, tropical, future bass, African rhythms and more. His mix for Wild City is no different. Featuring a balance of known and obscure artists from all over the world, with selections from artists like Noname, Kamaal Williams, Kaidi Tatham, Moses Boyd, Joy Orbison and more, the stimulating set starts off with rap and hip-hop, before taking you all over the spectrum, from jazz, tropical and Irish rock to disco, African rhythms and house. It might sound chaotic and haphazard to jump around genres like this, but Lefto switches between sounds and tracks so smoothly whilst maintaining a breezy atmosphere throughout. Requested by Brett Millen and the Wrestling Rewind Podcast, the Vid Neg crew sit down to review 1995's piss poor Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie. What's with all the backflips? Why do the Rangers drag their heels when time is so clearly of the essence? And does walking off a ledge really constitute falling to your doom? All the hard-hitting questions answered in this mighty, morphin' episode!

I One who believes in God must have God's words with him to avoid a dull life. The light shines from God's word, without the words of God, I don't know who I am. To keep our heart close to God, we must read His words and often commune with the truth. To receive God's approval, we must seek the truth. The path of life grows more magnificent under my feet. My change of disposition will be commended by God. I will continue to strive to work hard and forge forward. Success is calling to me. II When encountering issues, we should pray and seek God. And it's a happy thing to be with the Holy Spirit. With Christ to guide us and words to show the way, it's possible to gain the truth. Firmly believing in Christ, holding fast the true way, I won't regret. To receive God's approval, we must seek the truth. The path of life grows more magnificent under my feet. My change of disposition will be commended by God. I will continue to strive to work hard and forge forward. Success is calling to me. III To live a meaningful life, we must have the truth. A life without the truth is a life of suffering. Believing in fate will not solve our problems. Only gaining the truth, can we have the reality of life, can we have the reality of life. Know that God's work is utterly righteous. The craftiest human cannot deceive God. To receive God's approval, we must seek the truth. The path of life grows more magnificent under my feet. My change of disposition will be commended by God. I will continue to strive to work hard and forge forward. Success is calling to me. Mint is a wonderful herb. Not only because of the pleasing scent but because of the benefits it has internally and externally for your body. The plant itself is easy to grow and thrives even in harsh and cold climates. With a pleasing aroma to humans, it is surprising that you can use it as a deterrent to keep animals out of your garden or away from your flowers. Mint has a multitude of varieties and because of this, you'll be able to pick the one that best suits your senses and needs. Along with using the fresh petals, you can also make use of the stem, dried leaves, and oil produced by the herb, mint. USING MINT IN OIL FORM In oil form, mint, and its varieties can be diffused to create a fresh scent which will heighten your senses and fill your home. If you suffer from headaches, then simply take a drop or two of oil and rub it on your temples. Be careful not to use more than 2 drops as the oil will cause your eyes to water. Wash your hands with soap afterward. Do you have sore muscles? Peppermint oil can be rubbed on them to give you a little relief. You can apply it directly or mix it with a carrier oil, like olive or coconut, which will make it a little easier to apply. HOW TO USE FRESH AND DRIED MINT IN CULINARY DISHES AND COOKING With its flavorful leaves, people have used mint in culinary cooking for years. Whether you pluck fresh leaves from the plant or buy them from your local market/store, mint will add a unique and pleasing flavor to your dish. What about the stem? Glad you asked. The stem can also be used for cooking as I will explain below. In Leaf, form infuse blended or individual mints (peppermint or spearmint) to make a tea. Flavor soups, stews, and sauces with fresh or dried leaves and or the stem. Finely chop and add into dips like guacamole or salsa Sprinkle into main courses Infuse the stems in vinegar or oil and let it sit for a few days. Add mint stems to your vegetables when grilling letting their flavor sink into the food. Make a mint sauce and use with chocolate in a dessert. MINT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES By Christina Lane YIELDS 1 DOZEN Chocolate chip cookies made with real fresh mint! 1 hr, 20 Prep Time 11 min Cook Time 1 hr, 31 Total Time Ingredients: Unsalted butter, 1/2 cup (1 stick) Firmly packed fresh mint, roughly chopped, 1/2 cup Firmly packed dark brown sugar, 1/2 cup Granulated sugar, 1/2 cup 1 egg, at room temperature Vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon All-Purpose unbleached flour, 1 1/2 cups Baking soda, 1 teaspoon Fine sea salt, 1/2 teaspoon Semisweet chocolate chips, 1/2 cup Directions: Place the butter and mint in a small saucepan over medium heat. Melt the butter, swirling occasionally. After about 2-3 minutes, when you can smell the mint, turn the heat off and let the butter continue to steep for 30 minutes. Strain the butter, pressing the leaves to extract all of the butter from the leaves. Meanwhile, line two baking sheets with parchment paper, and set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add the butter and sugars. Beat until light and creamy, 3-5 minutes. Next, add the egg and vanilla and beat for an additional minute. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the mixer while running, stopping to scrape the bowl as necessary. Finally, add the chocolate chips and mix just until combined. Remove the cookie dough from the bowl, wrap in plastic wrap, and press flat into a disk. Chill for 1 hour. Preheat the oven to 350. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions, rolling into 12 balls. Space 6 balls on each cookie sheet (the cookies will spread considerably). Bake for 11-12 minutes, rotating the pans half-way through. Let cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, and then move to a cooling rack to cool completely. HOW TO USE MINT AS A DETOXER/CLEANSER

Halloween and Rabbits With fall here in the Northern Hemisphere, and temperatures dropping and leaves falling we have Halloween fast approaching. You hear tales of ghosts, witches, vampires, monsters, and other assorted scary icons, but none can be more terrifying than bunny rabbits! Gargoyle Rabbit We cover this in a previous episode, but it is worth a revisit. This terrifying gargoyle is known as the Vampire Rabbit of Newcastle. He perches above a solicitor's office behind St. Nicholas' Cathedral in Newcastle, England. No one knows why he is there, or what makes him glare with such evil. With its crazed bulging eyes, huge fangs and claws, The Vampire Rabbit of Newcastle is a mysterious grotesque that has perched above the ornate rear door of the historic Cathedral Buildings, facing the rear of St Nicholas Cathedral for over a hundred years but no one is quite sure why the blood-sucking Lepus was created. Erected with the rest of the building in 1901, locals tell a tale of grave robbers who were running rampant in the area until one dark night the fanged beastie rose on the door opposite the graveyard as if to scare off future robbers. Less superstitiously, it has also been theorized that the vampire rabbit is in fact a hare whose ears were mistakenly put on backwards. If this were the case the bloody little creature could have been installed to reference Sir George Hare Phipson, a local doctor, Freemason, and friend of the cathedral’s architect. Most basically the rabbit could simply be meant to represent the coming of spring, invoking the same symbolic association that created the Easter Bunny. While the vampire rabbit of Newcastle was originally the same sandy color of the surrounding stonework, in modern times it has been painted a menacing black with droplets of blood staining its teeth and claws. http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/the-vampire-rabbit-of-newcastle A decade ago the Vampire Rabbit enjoyed a brief moment in the limelight when it formed part of a light festival. During a winter Glow event in 2006, the carving was illuminated in pink, making it look even more weird and wonderful, and there were projections of it across the city. But the rabbit, which has had a few licks of paint over the years, including being turned black with its teeth, eyes and claws picked out in red, still retains its air of mystery. http://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/stories-behind-newcastles-called-vampie-12455793 Swamp Rabbit Not all killer rabbits are fictional. In April of 1979, president Jimmy Carter was fishing near his home in Plains, Georgia when he was attacked by a swamp rabbit! The rabbit swam toward the president's boat and tried to board. Carter had to fend it off with an oar. Press secretary Jody Powell is quoted from his 1986 book The Other Side of the Story: The animal was clearly in distress, or perhaps berserk. The President confessed to having had limited experience with enraged rabbits. He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat. After some objected that rabbits can't swim, a picture of the incident was produced, clearly showing the rabbit swimming. The rabbit's political affiliation is still unknown. 3. The Haunted Warren: It’s a rare reminder of a time when the warrens that carved a honeycomb under the Brecks were a rich source of income for landowners. Thetford Warren Lodge was built around the 1400s a few miles west of Thetford – probably at the bequest of the prior of Our Lady’s Priory who had Royal approval to hunt small game and was keen to protect his livelihood by constructing a defensive lodge which could repel poachers. It was big enough to accommodate hunting parties and the prior’s warrener, who protected, farmed and sold the rabbits which were prized for their meat and their fur, and strong enough to deal with those who came prepared with bows, arrows and sharpened sticks with a view to rabbit poaching. Warreners, who lived in the highest part of the warren on the second floor, would bore holes to make burrows and provide food such as groundsel, dandelions and thistles, spreading gorse and tree boughs as shelter and food in colder months. On the ground floor of the building was a storeroom for traps, nets and racks to dry skins and hang salted meats. At one point, the lodge was acquired by the Maharajah Duleep Singh – the Indian prince exiled to Norfolk in the 19th century – on a 99-year lease. A few warreners are still working in Breckland, trapping rabbits and moving them to other warrens in a bid to control the population. As with many medieval buildings, the lodge – which is now maintained by English Heritage - has its fair share of spooky stories attached to it. One ominous tale harks back to the building’s warrening history: it is said that a large – even huge – ghostly white rabbit with flaming red eyes guards the doorway to the lodge and is an omen of death to anyone who lays eyes on it. A further two strange stories appear to be rooted in the nearby Leper Hospital of St Margaret where poor souls suffering from this highly-contagious disease were kept away from the rest of society on the edge of town: the building was ransacked by thieves in 1304 who stole silver, linen and cloth and then set fire to the building. It is said that a figure with a strange, two-dimensional face can be seen gibbering horribly and terrifying witnesses as it wanders the area close to the lodge and an eerie face has been reported looking out from the first floor window of the building, even though it no longer has any floors. In 2011, a man was seen peering from a second floor window wearing blue and white clothing and boasting gaping black holes where his eyes and mouth should have been. Movies and Shows: The strange history of terrifying bunny rabbits in film Despite being among the softest and least threatening of woodland creatures, rabbits rarely get portrayed as such in movies. While most of us would be content to watch one nibble on a carrot for 90 minutes, filmmakers have routinely sought to capitalize and subvert the rabbit’s image, either by brutally murdering them or turning them creepy and cannibalistic. Killer Rabbit Now I think the most famous movie rabbit is in Monty Python and the Wholly Grail: Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 1975 The bunnies bite back in Terry Gilliam’s and Terry Jones’ riotously funny Monty Python and the Holy Grail, when King Arthur (Graham Chapman) and his knights of the round table get more than they bargained for from a seemingly innocuous, fluffy white scamp. “That’s no ordinary rabbit, that’s the most foul, cruel and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on… it’s got a vicious streak a mile wide,” warns their Scottish guide. Unconvinced, the ensuing carnage is hysterical. “Run away, run away!” The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog guards the entrance to the cave of Caerbannog in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Yes, he may look like a innocent little fluffball, but he can bite your head off before you even realize it, as he did Bors, Gawain, and Ector in the movie. Run away! Run away! The Killer Rabbit also appears in the musical Spamalot. Were-Rabbit Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, 2005 Cheese lover Wallace and his faithful pooch Gromit returned in DreamWorks Animation’s second Oscar-winning feature to date, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, written and directed by Steve Box and Nick Park and featuring the vocal talents of Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter. In this gorgeously pun-tastic affair, the stop-animated clay duo take on a mentally enhanced bunny following an invention mishap, but it’s not the enormous beastie with a penchant for demolishing oversized veggies that’s terrorising the village – it’s actually a mutated Wallace. In the 2005 claymation film Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, a mysterious nocturnal rabbit is raiding a community's vegetable gardens, threatening the annual vegetable contest. It turns out that the hero of the story is suffering from a curse (brought on by his own machinery) that causes him to turn into a giant rabbit when he is exposed to moonlight! Vampire Rabbit Bunnicula, the Vampire Rabbit was a 1982 animated ABC Weekend Special based on a series of children's books by James Howe. Now I remember reading this book series as a child. My Wife will comment "Bunnys are evil - Remember Bunicula?". Bunnicula was a family pet who sucked the juices out of vegetables. Not all that frightening in reality -unless you're a vegetable. Nevertheless, Bunnicula can sprout bat wings, fly, and move things with the power of his mind. Imaginary Rabbit - Donnie Darko, 2001 Writer/director Richard Kelly’s dimension-bending feature debut delivered one of cinema’s most memorable bunnies in the towering, dead-eyed frame of Frank, who may or may not be an evil time-travelling demon intent on destroying the planet. Or possibly saving it. We’re still not entirely sure, and that’s the genius of it. With Jake Gyllenhaal the only person able to see Frank, and the only one aware of impending doom, it’s a refreshingly bizarre take on the end of the world that set up Jake and his sister Maggie for big things, but it’s Frank who haunts our fevered dreams. Evil rabbits can even invade our thoughts! The 2001 movie Donnie Darko left many with nightmares of imaginary human-size rabbits, and not the benign imaginary friend we met in the movie Harvey. The apparition of a 6-foot rabbit named Frank saves Donnie Darko's life and tells him the world will end in 28 days. Frank incites Donnie into committing criminal acts -and why not, if the world is going to end anyway? Fatal Attraction, 1987 Speaking of lust and murder, while Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction technically scrapes a pass, in this pot-boiler thriller that spawned the term ‘bunny boiler’. Glenn Close’s Alex has an affair with and becomes obsessed by Michael Douglas’ Dan, who goes on to reject her in favour of his good wife, leading to the unfortunate end of his family’s pet bunny. Vengeance is meted when Close ends up both drowned and shot in the bath in the film’s seriously dodgy, if ludicrously entertaining, finale. Watership Down, 1978 Quite possibly the most evilly terrifying film ever inflicted upon unsuspecting children, Martin Rosen’s animated adaptation of Richard Adams’ classic novel, Watership Down. Responsible for scarring the psyche of an entire generation, it’s a sort of rabbit-led Game of Thrones, where woe first befalls the bunnies (voiced by John Hurt and Richard Briers, amongst others) when heavy duty digging machines destroy their warren, forcing them to go on the run. It’s all downhill from there, with paws trapped in snares, insane rabbit dictators, nasty cats, dangerous dogs and eye-bleeding death by myxomatosis. Akira, 1988 Sticking with scary animated rabbits, Japanese dystopian classic Akira, by writer/director Katsuhiro Ohtomo, features a disturbingly oversized example during psychic patient Tetsuo’s (Nozomu Sasaki) fevered nightmare scene. What starts off with a teensy cutesy red car riding bunny and his teddy bear mate is soon replaced by hulking monstrosities that destroy all before them, Godzilla-style, before being scared off by the blood gushing from Tetsuo’s feet after he steps on broken glass in his bid to escape. If ever you needed a reason not to eat cheese (or carrots) before bed, this is it. Harvey, 1950 Long before Jake Gyllenhall cornered the market in giant invisible bunny besties, James Stewart (It’s a Wonderful Life, Vertigo) starred as eccentric boozehound Elwood P. Dowd in Henry Koster’s Harvey (adapted from the play by Mary Chase by herself and Oscar Brodney). The rabbit in question shares Frank’s ability to stop time in Donnie Darko, though this is less creepy sci-fi and more silly whimsy with a comedy of errors, like when Elwood’s sister gets locked up in a sanatorium in his stead. Just like It’s a Wonderful Life, events are far from bleak; it’ll leave you with a fuzzy glow. Belenggu, 2012 Men in rabbit suits are rarely good, kids. Indonesian writer/director Upi Avianto’s highly stylised thriller/horror flick Belenggu hammers home the message with a knife-wielding dude in a white and pink get up in this enthralling slice of nutty noir. Elang (Abimana Aryasatya) thinks he’s met the love of his life in Jingga (Imelda Therinne) but the course certainly doesn’t run smooth any more than the narrative does here. Night of the Lepus, 1972 Janet Leigh (Psycho, The Manchurian Candidate) stars alongside Stuart Whitman (The Mark, The Comancheros) in this schlocky horror B-movie directed by William F. Claxton of Little House on the Prairie and Bonanza fame. Based on the novel The Year of the Angry Rabbits by Sydneysider Russell Braddon, Don Holliday and Gene R. Kearney handle the hokey screenplay about enormous killer rabbits running amuck in small town US. Firmly in the so bad it’s good territory, most of the ‘giant’ critters are obviously household pets romping around in miniature sets. The 1972 film Night of the Lepus is the definitive monster bunny movie. Plagued by too many rabbits, a community turns to scientists who experiment on the rabbits to keep them from reproducing. An escaped rabbit reproduces anyway, and the results are huge carnivorous mutants that eat anything in their way, including humans! STP video https://youtu.be/YxS4lqppZ6Y AFI miss murder https://youtu.be/YU4hhNKsPog Versatile Rabbits - “Mythology has caught on to the duality of the rabbit, making them figures of both light and darkness, a bridge between the otherworld and the heavens, the ideal beast to plague your subconscious.” Bunnies can portray any evil character, This may be true, but the evil cinematic rabbit has yet to reach its final form. Obviously, bunny rabbits are out to get us. Tony Jopia’s highly anticipated comedy-horror hybrid sees locals of a peaceful English village, enjoying their annual summer festival when they are suddenly attacked by mutated killer rabbits! “Somewhere in the depths of space, aliens are watching the earth and planning their attack. Unaware of the impending danger, the locals of a sleepy English village are preparing for their summer festival. The aliens launch their offensive by mutating the local rabbit population, and when the furry demons are released, the body count starts to pile up as blood, guts, and fur flies in all directions as the humans fight off the alien threat.” The film features genre icon Caroline Munro (Maniac, The Spy Who Loved Me). Bunny Man! The legend has circulated for years in several forms. A version naming a suspect and specific location was posted to a website in the late 1990s by a "Timothy C. Forbes". This version states that in 1904, an asylum prison in Clifton, Virginia was shut down by successful petition of the growing population of residents in Fairfax County. During the transfer of inmates to a new facility, one of the fifteen transports crashed; most, including the driver, were killed, ten escaped. A search party found all but one of them. During this time, locals allegedly began to find hundreds of cleanly skinned, half-eaten carcasses of rabbits hanging from the trees in the surrounding areas. Another search of the area was ordered, and the police located the remains of Marcus Wallster, left in a similar fashion to the rabbit carcasses hanging in a nearby tree or under a bridge overpass—also known as the "Bunny Man Bridge"—along the railroad tracks at Colchester Road. Officials name the last missing inmate, Douglas J. Grifon, as their suspect and call him "the bunny man". In this version, officials finally manage to locate Grifon but, during their attempt to apprehend him at the overpass, he nearly escapes before being hit by an oncoming train where the original transport crashed. They say after the train passed, the police heard laughter coming from the site. It is eventually revealed that Grifon was institutionalized for killing his family and children on Easter Sunday. For years after the "Bunny Man's" death, in the time approaching Halloween, carcasses are said to be found hanging from the overpass and surrounding areas. A figure is reportedly seen by passersby making their way through the one lane bridge tunnel. Fairfax County Public Library Historian-Archivist Brian A. Conley extensively researched the Bunny Man legend. He has located two incidents of a man in a rabbit costume threatening people with an axe. The vandalism reports occurred a week apart in 1970 in Burke, Virginia. The first incident was reported the evening of October 19, 1970 by U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Robert Bennett and his fiancée, who were visiting relatives on Guinea Road in Burke. Around midnight, while returning from a football game, they reportedly parked their car in a field on Guinea Road to "visit an Uncle who lived across the street from where the car was parked". As they sat in the front seat with the motor running, they noticed something moving outside the rear window. Moments later, the front passenger window was smashed, and there was a white-clad figure standing near the broken window. Bennett turned the car around while the man screamed at them about trespassing, including: "You're on private property, and I have your tag number." As they drove down the road, the couple discovered a hatchet on the car floor. When the police requested a description of the man, Bennett insisted he was wearing a white suit with long bunny ears. However, Bennett's fiancée contested their assailant did not have bunny ears on his head, but was wearing a white capirote of some sort. They both remembered seeing his face clearly, but in the darkness, they could not determine his race. The police returned the hatchet to Bennett after examination. Bennett was required to report the incident upon his return to the Air Force Academy. The second reported sighting occurred on the evening of October 29, 1970, when construction security guard Paul Phillips approached a man standing on the porch of an unfinished home, in Kings Park West on Guinea Road. Phillips said the man was wearing a gray, black, and white bunny costume, and was about 20 years old, 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 m) tall, and weighed about 175 pounds (79 kg). The man began chopping at a porch post with a long-handled axe, saying: "All you people trespass around here. If you don't get out of here, I'm going to bust you on the head." The Fairfax County Police opened investigations into both incidents, but both were eventually closed for lack of evidence. In the weeks following the incidents, more than 50 people contacted the police claiming to have seen the "Bunny Man". Several newspapers reported the incident of the "Bunny Man" eating a man's runaway cat, including the following articles in The Washington Post: "Man in Bunny costume Sought in Fairfax" (October 22, 1970) "The 'Rabbit' Reappears" (October 31, 1970) "Bunny Man Seen" (November 4, 1970) "Bunny Reports Are Multiplying" (November 6, 1970) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunny_Man © Copyrighted

Firmly rooted in New York's Punk and Hardcore ancestry, Rebelmatic has self-sworn hip-hop purists, moshing alongside skate punks. They've got the respect of the legion of hardcore kids stashed away in the wilds of Brooklyn and Long Island. They can cast a wide net, with successful results because their personal brand of Brooklyn rock has more NY hard-knocks authenticity than most. Despite their NY pedigree the band's sound is a trippy "what-if" game. More pointedly, imagine The Doors making a hardcore album…except Jim Morrison isn't a privileged college kid feigning otherwise, but an offspring of the Corona slums…the wild mane now dreadlocks, and the jazz organ abandoned in a vacant lot. Group frontman, Creature, is a virtual General on New York's alt-scene. His packed and sweaty Fire Your Boss and Coffee Grind showcases have acted as the true vanguard of alternative urban arts in recent years. A haven for those who are about the band…not the bandwagon. He's single handedly created a scene that thrives outside the scope of the hipster dreamland…yet manages to flirt relentlessly with it…sizing it up for a cheap date. This is raw music for real people. Its unrelenting, brutal and touching all at once. •••• The B-Side Podcast is produced by Charlie Hoxie, Kecia Cole, Ro Johnson and Sachar Mathias; recorded by Onel Mulet; and edited by Khyriel Palmer and Emily Boghossian. They discuss wine, homelessness and the gig economy. This is part II of a three part series. All three parts are worthy reads. Our white wine recommendation this week is the 2012 Monte Tondo Soave Classico. This vintage may be hard to locate because the current offering is from 2013. Any wine can age, but does it age well or better yet improve is the question? The 2012 offering from Monte Tondo is a wonderful sipper to usher in autumn. Pear and honeyed lemon aromas are complimented by juicy pear and peach flavors on the palate. The finish is of medium length and very smooth . This Soave has indeed aged well. Soave works well with appetizers, fried foods, vegetables and pasta dishes with lightly flavored sauces. 12.5% alc $15 -$17If you're looking for a nice bottle of Malbec don't miss out on the 2012 Bodegas Colome. Opaque in the glass with a blueberry, boysenberry, baking spice nose. On palate more red fruits, cocoa, fig and spice. Firmly tannic and slightly chewy this wine calls for steak and boldly flavored meat dishes. 14.5% alc $17 - $20Thank you for listening and tell a friend about us. Cheers!

Soul Clap Records signee Nick Monaco takes us on a low-slung, funky journey for the latest Clash DJ podcast. Firmly established as part of the Soul Clap family as the duo begin charting releases on their new label, San Franciscan DJ and producer Nick Monaco’s heady electronic funk – at times reminiscent of Jimmy Edgar – also caught the attention of Claude VonStroke last year, who signed one of his tracks to a Dirtybird ‘Hatched’ comp. Monaco is creative but not precious in his music tastes, as his Clash mix demonstrates. There’s a Happy Mondays remix, a Busta Rhymes acapella (shedding light on his hip hop background) and Cameo’s nostalgic eighties funk journey, ‘Single Life’, sitting next to underground psyche-funkist Architeq, garage-house duo Maribou State, hip house act Wolf + Lamb, and plenty of Monaco’s own – very strong – tracks. It’s an upfront, undeniable mix, injected with soul and passion. Keep an eye out for Monaco’s rise. Nick Monaco’s ‘Naked Is My Nature’ EP is out in February on Soul Clap Records. So IF you are right-of-center OR a Conservative, shouldn't we be rooting for Romney ALL THE WAY?? i am stunned to hear of people, who are going to vote FIRMLY for another Republican- which is the same as voting for President Obama... You truly want that? Tonight is about ELECTION 2012- and what it would take to WIN IT ALL. Sounds direct enough, right? Think again- there are a bunch of factors both for President and Senate that make this anything BUT straightforward. Where we are, what we need, what it would take- and then WHY it is critical to do it now, and not it four years. You heard on my idea for a Romney slate? Tonight- you get my best shot at what that would look like and why, and a first peek at a newer, smaller, leaner Cabinet in Washington DC. IF you love America- tune in tonight and then VOTE in November, and bring as many friends as you can that think, act, believe like you do. This is the SINGLE biggest election of our LIFETIME.

Trust. How do we build our trust? Firmly believing that things will always be okay, that we can receive divine messages, that we are taken care of and a power greater than ourselves is looking out for us is a wonderful gift. But how do we bring this grace into our lives? How does one go from doubt and lack of faith, to a strong belief that grace truly exists for me? Each month we'll feature a variety of spiritual topics and listeners can call in later in the show and to ask questions. Join Host Lisa K., Angel Therapist® and her co-hosts for a monthly radio show, the first Tuesday of every month. Listen live or download an episode from the archive.
