Three Rivers Brewery Block is the gem of historical downtown Farmington, NM.  Three Rivers Eatery and Brewhouse was established in July 1997.  This historic building, originally built in 1912, was called the Andrews Building and housed the Farmington Drug Store and Farmington Times-Hustler newspaper.  Thanks to community support, the restaurant was expanded in July 1999, to offer more seating, kids play area, as well as a patio.  The décor features a large array of beer labels and coasters.  Donated by Henry and Margie Glosser, this impressive compilation is the product of over fifty years of collection. In 2003, Three Rivers opened the Tap and Game Room complete with over forty different rotating styles of beer annually.   The Tap Room features pool tables, foosball, shuffleboard, darts, and a patio.  In 2008 they filled the gap between the Eatery and Tap Room with a Pizzeria and Banquet Hall. The Pizzeria offers hand tossed NY style pizzas, calzones, sandwiches and Paninis, and of course, our beer!  In 2017 Three Rivers added a distillery operation and turned the banquet room into the brewstillery lounge serving custom cocktails, guest beers, charcuterie boards, and tapas, in a refined repurposed environment. A locally-owned and operated restaurant, proud of our traditional service ethic, Three Rivers Brewery continues to serve customers in a fun and historic atmosphere with plenty of stories to share.  Ask the servers about President Bill Clinton's visit to the area and Three Rivers' efforts to collect on a lunch bill to the White House, or find out how many staff have been visited by the resident ghost.  There has also even discovered unique historic artifacts within the walls, including torrid love letters and 1927 Babe Ruth baseball cards.

Alexander III, king of the ancient state of Macedon aka Macedonia - one of history’s greatest military commanders. And he was even more than that. He was also a scholar, a lover of literature and the arts, a deeply religious man. Undefeated in battle, he unleashed his army on countries great and small to forge an empire that stretched over three continents, from Greece to India and as far south as Egypt. He did all this in a little more than a decade after taking power at the age of twenty, until his untimely death at thirty-two. Alexander the Great was so great at destroying his opponents, his military tactics and strategies are still studied in military academies today.... over twenty-three centuries later. In a culture that valued war over all else, Alexander prevailed by being the best at conquering. He did whatever was necessary to win - and sometimes things that maybe weren’t so necessary. Entire cities were sometimes destroyed, priceless artifacts obliterated, all according to Alexander’s mercurial will. What made Alexander so great? We attempt to answer that question and more in today’s ancient and bloody and interesting as Hell edition of Timesuck. Donated $7000 to the SBP. LAPD and California Highway Patrol officers chased, arrested, and beat Rodney King, a twenty-five-year-old Black man, in 1991, and the fateful encounter would lead to a verdict of “not guilty” for the four officers that brought the city of LA to its knees. Long standing racial tensions bubbled over the surface, and inflamed by a video of the altercation, people took to the streets, burning, looting, and brutalizing their fellow civilians. The LA riots happened just under thirty years ago, yet from a historical perspective - so recent. And they are one of many. Tulsa in 1921. Watts in 1965. Ferguson in 2014. So many in 2020. Why? Are black Americans actually being unfairly targeted by law enforcement? Or is that just the perception? The answer, as is so usually is, seems to be more complicated than many in the media would have you believe. I do my damndest today to answer some really complicated, complex, and culturally volatile and polarizing questions in this “Why can’t we all just get along?” edition, of Timesuck. Interview with Allie Xu, The Chinese Medicine Pharmacist

Pharmacist's Voice

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 14, 2020 47:24

Today’s episode is an interview with Allie Xu, The Chinese Medicine Pharmacist.  She’s an Australian Pharmacist, entrepreneur, holistic health coach, Period Pride Advocate, and Chinese Medicine student. The information, opinions, and recommendations presented in this Podcast are for general information only.  This Podcast should not be considered professional medical advice. Allie was born and raised in a fourth-generation medical family in Shanghai, China and moved to Australia when she was 15 years old. She’s a registered pharmacist and holistic health coach.  Currently, Allie is completing her Master of Chinese Medicine with a major in Acupuncture. As a holistic health coach, she is passionate about showing the connection between emotion, mind, and body.  She uses Eastern and Western Medicine philosophies and coaching methods to assist her clients to first notice imbalances and then work to achieve balance.  The goal is to maintain optimal health and avoid chronic illness—both mental and physical—down the line. She is the Founder of the Global Pharmacy Entrepreneur Community, the host of Pharmacy Entrepreneur TV on YouTube, and the host of Pharmacy Entrepreneur Podcast.  Allie invites Pharmacists from different parts of the world to network and develop an Entrepreneur Mindset and skills.  Social Media, contact info, social media, and websites alliexu@alliexu.com Global Pharmacy Entrepreneurs YouTube Channel Pharmacy Entrepreneur Podcast LinkedIn   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/allie.xu https://www.facebook.com/GlobalPharmacyEntrepreneurs - facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/globalpharmacyentrepreneur - facebook group Instagram Highlights from the interview Allie advocates networking, collaborating, connecting people, and building relationships.  She helps pharmacists who feel trapped in a traditional pharmacist role.   The Global Pharmacy Entrepreneur Community was founded to connect innovative pharmacists from different parts of the world who want to learn about entrepreneurship, mindset, and skills so they can be healthier and happier both mentally and physically.   She helps people who are experiencing gender-based discrimination, humiliation, and oppression, especially women.  Allie advocates Period Pride.  She joined a “hack-a-thon” at the University of Queensland to help remove the shame and stigma associated with menstruation.  Her team partnered with an Australian charity group called “Share the Dignity,” which distributes period products to women who are homeless, at-risk, and/or experiencing domestic violence.  Donated period products are available, however, some women are too ashamed to ask for them.  Allie believes that period shame and stigma need to be addressed in young, school-aged girls (age 12-18).  Advocating Period Pride important to Allie because health professionals can talk to young women about this topic and make a difference.  The period is a natural process, and we shouldn’t be ashamed to talk about it.  Safety is an issue, and the right products need to be used.  Men and young men need to be educated too so they can support the women they care about.  Use #periodpride to show your support of Period Pride.   Allie is also an educator.  She educates pharmacists to take time to find their motivation, core values, vision, strengths and weaknesses, personality, “why,” and more.  Have a vision first.   Allie is pursuing her Master of Chinese Medicine with a major in Acupuncture.  Some may seek acupuncture to improve sleep, energy, and stress levels.  She will graduate and become a practitioner in 2021.  Some of the students in her class are chiropractors, general practitioners, naturopathic practitioners, and nurses.  She may pursue a PhD after the Master of Chinese Medicine so she can specialize.  She is exploring her options now and trying to figure out what problems she wants to solve.   Allie is a holistic health coach and life coach.  She uses Eastern and Western Medicine.  She uses tools to assess physical health, emotional health, financial health, relationship health, career health, creativity, environment, and family history.  Her clients are women.  She helps them find their purpose and what drives them.  Then, she addresses the mind-body connection and helps them regulate their emotions and stay motivated.   Allie became interested in practicing Chinese Medicine because of family influence.  Allie was raised knowing both Eastern and Western medicine.  Allie was curious how Chinese Medicine could help prevent disease and lead to a long, healthy life.  Plus, she wanted to understand her heritage more deeply from the Chinese Medicine point of view. Allie also uses her voice on social media.  She has a YouTube Channel, a Podcast, and a Facebook Group.  She interviews successful pharmacist entrepreneurs from different parts of the world.  She also interviews entrepreneurs in other industries (ex:  tech and business).  It helps expose pharmacists to other entrepreneurs.  The opportunities a full-time pharmacist has to network are limited.  Allie can provide a service to them through her social media channels.  She believes that the entrepreneurs who consumer her content are growth-minded and innovative.  She truly enjoys getting to know entrepreneurs from around the globe, building relationships, collaborating, and networking.  Allie invites people to share questions and accomplishments on her platforms.  Check out Allie’s social media channels:   Global Pharmacy Entrepreneurs YouTube Channel Pharmacy Entrepreneur Podcast LinkedIn   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/allie.xu https://www.facebook.com/GlobalPharmacyEntrepreneurs - facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/globalpharmacyentrepreneur - facebook group Instagram What’s a typical week like for Allie?  She works as a pharmacist in a community practice setting one day/week.  She is a student.  She consults online.  She is an advocate and a networker.

Upon hearing this, local plant shop Nelly's Flowers and Plants (@nellysflowershop) donated 12 plants to her cause, which she then rallied some of her plant friends to auction off on their accounts (@plantblerd @thehoodbotanist @siloliage @plantmepaul @welcometothejunglehome @felinejungle @thejungleupstairs @plant.ma ). This auctioning went throughout the week and has now raised over SIX times the original amount of her PPP and that number is still growing! This seed of an idea that Agatha had to raise money on her personal account turned into an incredible cross account, cross plant community supported movement that has raised an amazing amount of money for 3 national organizations and 3 local NYC community organizations. And it's not stopping here, follow @plantingforprogress on instagram to follow more auctions, as new people are donating plants to be auctioned everyday. They are planning on having monthly auctions of rare collector plants for good causes, so give them a follow if you're interested.   Rachel Cargle and her free 30 day #dothework course   What is Bloom and Grow Doing: - Doing the work: continuing to learn about the system injustice against black people in the country and using our privilege to help this cause.  - Donated to Black Lives Matter, Color of Change, The New Georgia Project, Showing Up for Racial Justice and Teens for Food Justice and continuing to seek out organizations that support ending racial injustice and food insecurity  - Finding diverse voices to interview for the podcast - Vote   This is a movement not a moment.    Follow Christopher AKA PlantKween Instagram: @plantkween   Follow Colah and Black in the Garden: iTunes: Black in the Garden Podcast IG: @blackinthegarden    Follow Maria and Bloom and Grow Radio: Support Bloom and Grow Radio by becoming a Plant Friend on Patreon! Last week I learned to “Listen more; talk less. It will be good to give the microphone to someone else who is living a different experience than your own.”I’ve been incredibly inspired to use my platform to continue to uplift voices and stories of those who need to be heard right now. So I’d like to remind you if you didn’t hear it last week or maybe you did and thought, what could I possibly have to say? What could I contribute? Is my story/thought/idea/moment worth sharing? I am here to remind you, the answer is yes, you do have a story to share.Last week, I had originally set a deadline to call into the voicemail line I set up. After thinking on it this past week, I realized there is no deadline on telling your story. There is no deadline on speaking your truth. There is no deadline on reaching out to me to help you conquer your fears. Facing Fear with Sara is open to you.I’d like to remind you I’ve set up a voicemail line and an anonymous form for our Black brothers and sisters to call in and tell your story. Here’s how you can...Call 317-296-3737 (for nonverbal email facingfearwithsara@gmail.com). To remain 100% anonymous, fill out this form Share a life experience, an impactful story, your hope, fears, perspective or whatever’s on your heartIf you're a Black business owner and would like to promote your business and obtain free advertising from me, I invite you as wellLeave your first and/or last name, location, email and phone (for me to contact if needed or if you’d like to have a conversation with me rather than leaving a voicemail) OR choose to remain completely anonymousMaybe you know someone else with a story needing to be heard. Send them this episode via text or DM them with my social media posts on Facebook or Instagram at @facingfearwithsara. I hope whoever is listening finds warmth and encouragement in hearing my voice inviting them to open this line of communication. There so many resources out there and I encourage you to continue reading, listening and taking action. One resource I want to share is the Brown Eye, Blue Eye experiment by Jane Elliott. And then I want to you to listen to an interview she did just recently. Finally, we will end this show with 8 minutes and 46 seconds of silence in honor of George Floyd. Accountability is important. Here is what I am doing to educate myself. Please know I am open to more resources and education, so send them my way.Donated to NAACP, Black Lives Matter, WeTheProtesters, Minnesota Freedom FundSign the petition for Justice for Breonna TaylorIn a current book study group with I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness and will pick up next When They Call You a Terrorist A Black Lives Matter Memoir by Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandele

Davida Allen and William Robinson, two of Australia's leading painters, are not only both Archibald winners and Queenslanders but have been friends for over 40 years. Although they share their thoughts about the art world and their work, their painting styles and personalities are very different - which might be part of the secret to their long friendship. Davida's current show with Philip Bacon Galleries in Brisbane runs until 28 March 2020 and William Robinson will be showing with the Gallery later this year. This interview focuses on Davida's show and an in-depth interview with William Robinson will be posted closer to his exhibition. Bill is one of Australia’s most important internationally acclaimed painters so to obtain his insights into Davida’s work was a privilege.  Apart from winning the Archibald, Davida is also a four time finalist in the prize and has had 3 major survey exhibitions of her work, most recently in 2018. She’s had over 20 solo shows and her work is held in nearly every major state gallery as well as the National Gallery of Australia and the MOMA in New York. She’s also a novelist and has written and directed an internationally acclaimed film. William Robinson is one of Australia's most significant painters. He has won the Archibald prize twice, the Wynne prize twice and his work is held in over 30 public collections across the world. He is the first Australian artist to have a gallery dedicated to his works – the William Robinson Gallery is located in historic Old Government House in Brisbane. In this episode I am joined by Michelle Odoerfer, a mother of two young girls living in Clinton Township, Michigan with her husband Andrew. Michelle experienced two very different births - her first, in a hospital, was tense as she had to endure verbal and physical aggression from an attending OB. Her second was a peaceful, unattended home birth, with just herself and her husband (baby came so fast the midwife didn’t make it). Hear Michelle share how she learned some tough lessons about self advocacy - not only during her first birth, but also through her newborn’s undiagnosed tongue and lip tie. Many health care providers missed the ties, and Michelle had to figure out on her own why her baby wasn’t gaining weight. She also committed to a journey of sourcing donated breast milk, and crafting her own supplemental nursing system. For more information and news about Evidence Based Birth®, visit www.ebbirth.com. A homework assignment, asking kids to write a response to the point of view that 'all terrorists should be forgiven', has caused an uprising by their parents and social media! Indeed, the first reaction is to be appalled at the very idea of forgiveness in light of the countless terror attacks that have been causing death, destruction and despair worldwide. But, is the answer so black and white? There are instances of people becoming vulnerable to terrorists’ influence because of traumatic personal experiences they’ve had-does this justify forgiveness? Can we forgive them if they’ve only donated a little money to a terrorist cause, but not if they actually hurt someone? Dr. Carole delves into these gray areas by comparing a lovelorn beauty queen who supported her terrorist love interest by sending him money over the internet with the London Bridge terrorist who pretended to be de-radicalized until he went on a lethal attack.

During a little holiday trip, producer John Harris made a visit to the gallery and studio of photographer Clyde Butcher. For anyone who grew up in Florida, Butcher’s work should be very familiar; his photography is often found on the walls of local libraries, municipal buildings, and, as Miami native Jason Tables points out, “every doctor’s office I’ve ever been in.” Butcher’s images of the Florida landscapes, particularly of the Everglades, are legendary, and although he has a brisk print sales business, many of the photos in libraries have the attached placard, “Donated by Clyde Butcher.” Although he is known primarily for his large format black-and-white photography of “the swamp,” Butcher’s photographic career extends back over many decades and includes architectural photography, mountain and western landscapes, filmed documentaries, and decorative color photography. Interestingly, Butcher began his career selling prints at small art fairs and, in the 1970s, he had a thriving business selling thousands of prints through department stores such as Sears and Montgomery Ward. This episode of the B&H Photography Podcast is a casual conversation that glides through several topics including Butcher’s work with large format cameras, his recent foray into Sony digital cameras paired with Canon tilt-shift lenses, the incredible set of vintage enlargers in his giant darkroom space, the business models he and his family employ to market his images, water conservation, and, of course, his relationship to the Florida landscape for which he will be forever linked. Check out the video below for the awesome insider info, direct from the author himself! Want to read the first chapter? You're in luck! Layne Parrish slid his fingertips along the wooden ax handle. He appreciated the fine craftsmanship, the quality of the wood, and the razor-sharp edge of the blade. “You like it?” asked the receptionist at the lodge’s check-in desk. “What?” Layne said, angling his body toward her. As he did, he lowered his hand, since touching the ax had made the sleeve of his hoodie ride up, exposing the web of tattoos on one of his arms. Not that he expressly needed to hide his ink from this woman, but he liked to keep a low profile. During his pre-retirement jobs, Layne had to spend time cataloging what each contact knew or had seen. Too much work. Lots of work, yes, but also danger. In a situation like this, when anyone and everyone could be a suspect, care had to be exercised at all times. Letting the guard down for an instant could result in a grave mistake. Mistakes meant the targets would flee without accountability. Layne would not let them get away this time. “Sorry,” the receptionist said, her face folding like a bashful animal. “I saw you examining the ax, Mr. Priest. It was a gift from a member of the Coast Salish tribe in Vancouver. Their people used to live all up and down these mountains.” “Gotcha,” he said as he crossed the lodge’s room. Like a log cabin, the interior was stacked wood deeply stained brown, adorned with other similar objects hanging on the walls. Sets of old-timey snowshoes and long-necked rifles. Sepia-toned photographs in thin frames. He paused in front of a wolf’s head, mounted on the wall. The furry beast was in mid-growl, porcelain teeth tinged with yellow. “Is this real?” he asked. “Yes,” the receptionist said. “But he wasn’t hunted or anything of that sort. That wolf was a former resident of this area of the mountain. Some of them live in caves nearby, and we happened upon a recently deceased one at exactly the right time.” “Interesting.” Layne stepped to her desk, and she returned his passport, the American passport featuring his picture, but the name Leonard Priest. “There are still plenty of wolves wandering around, in case you decide to go for a hike. Many of them are not afraid of humans one bit.” “Noted.” “Have you been to Squamish Mountain Retreat Center before, Mr. Priest?” “Please, call me Leonard, or Lenny,” Layne said to the young woman with blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail so tight, her eyebrows arched. “And no, I haven’t. This is our first time in the area.” “Excellent, Leonard. There will be a formal orientation tomorrow morning, but feel free to grab any of the staff at any time, or call the lodge from your room. It’s a free and open sort of environment here.” He flipped through a guest book sitting on the counter. No one had signed it recently, but he made a few mental notes about things previous guests had marked. They talked about the sunsets and the hiking trails and all the typical tourist things. Since it was now in the dead of winter, Layne didn’t anticipate getting out on the hiking trails too much. “I appreciate the hospitality.” “I hope you’ll find the ‘new you’ you’ve been seeking. Everyone gets something unique from the SMRC and their stay here.” Layne accepted the two keycards for the bungalow and slid them into his pocket. “I’m counting on it.” Behind the woman’s head hung a set of crisscrossing pistols. Revolvers, at least a hundred years old. They reminded him of the Colt Peacemaker he sometimes carried. Layne pointed at them. “Those Mountie pieces?” “Oh, yes,” she said. “Donated to us by the Squamish Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant himself. We have an excellent relationship with the town,

Nipsey was an American rapper, business man and father who was senselessly shot and killed March 31. Despite this tragedy, he left behind a legacy and a blueprint for his fans, family, and peers that could be utilized to break the cycle of poverty through entrepreneurship and investments. This episode sponsored by Shatki Yoga Athens and AADM. How did he make a difference? February 2019, Nipsey purchased Marathon Clothing store, prior to open his clothing store, he also launched Destination Crenshaw, a new arts project, open-air museum and outdoor art and culture center celebrating black Los Angeles. Donated school clothing and shoes to and funded the renovation of a Crenshaw elementary school’s playground and basketball courts. Established Too Big To Fail as part of a partnership with Vector90 which led to the opening of a coworking space for a STEM initiative for local youth and the list continues. So he not only gave back to his community, he made wise investments that could help break the cycle of poverty within his family. Married without kids in southern California, had a corporate career, and was doing some humanitarian work and world travel. Passion for the poor and marginalized, and wanted to help those who lacked opportunity. Fell in love with India on a trip in 2004 and started to go back yearly. Donated a water well that ended up going in a red light district, and learned a lot about human trafficking while being there for the dedication of the well. Began focusing on job creation for the women in danger there to try and set them up long term. [7:00] minute: Sustainability is key, you didn’t want to put a band-aid on the problem and hope it goes away as you are really just solving a temporary pain, vs creating jobs which is a permanent scaleable solution. This was all in 2005, way before B-corps, and at the time the American way was just throwing money at problems. She saw the changes that needed to be made and that helped her focus on the job creation / sustainable solutions. [8:20] minute: Before all this, what were you doing career wise? Corporate sales, which allowed her to be social and be around people – which she loved and was a skill that was then transferable to her work now. Her past career helped her narrow down and go with the idea of women’s pajamas as a product for the women in India to make and sell. [9:30] minute: Once you had this inspiration and decided you wanted to create these clothes and set up this company, what were the first few months like, how did you get it started? All her friends were starting families and her and her partner were struggling to get pregnant. She chose to see this as an advantage that gave them the freedom to travel the world. Had to break through the stigma that non-profits were the things that helped out people in need, as the idea of business as a solution wasn’t as popular. [12:00] minute: How did it evolve then from the idea of a non-profit into the B-corp model? Definition of a B-corp: designation by the IRS that puts the benefit or the mission of the company on par with profitability. Started as a 501c3 non-profit and ran that way for years before she was able to make the change happen into a hybrid for-profit and non-profit combined model. [14:20] minute: When did you quit your day job then? Not immediately as she had the luxury of time off to be able to take trips to India and begin the groundwork. Wanted to put in the research and leg-work to make sure what they were going to do would work and there would be interest on the receiving end. Wanted to avoid the “big white savior” complex. Once there was a small staff and things were really starting to run, she quit her job, her family moved, and she stayed on the board of the non-profit. To secure the transition from a non-profit to a for-profit business she had to purchase the operations side of the non-profit. Rebranded as Sudara, Inc. [20:30] minute: What an amazing gift...

One example there are folks who process herbs and teach how to make tinctures, and how to grow the herbs for oils, medicinal purposes. Workshops on Herbs ferment your food Sourdough how to raise chickens well taught by experts in the field all from the Valley So this is the 3rd? 4th? We started 4 years ago this is our 4th! My #WeightLossJourney - From 323lbs to 200lbs!

So this is the results of my January 2018 goal, which I made in a podcast a couple of weeks ago. My January goal was to be more & do more positive things in this world. This was coming off of the end of the year, where everyone said 2017 was the worst. I didn't think so, but I wanted to spread some love and positive vibes around the world. Here are the things I listed as major positive things I did: 1. Helped a friend of mine move. 2. Helped someone find their phone at work. 3. Helped bench someone at the gym. 4. Donated money to the ACLU 5. Sent my mom a personal video for her birthday. I think all of these are good positive vibes I brought to the world. Sound weird to have to list them, but I don't know how else I could showcase why I completed this goal. I hope all of you go out of your way today and do something positive today.'

SIO45: James Lindsay, Co-Author of the 'Conceptual Penis' Hoax Paper

Serious Inquiries Only

Last week you heard Eli Bosnick's side of why the 'Conceptual Penis' hoax paper was disingenuous and unskeptical, and today I speak with one of the paper's authors, James Lindsay. James has been a previous guest on the show; he's been someone I have always admired for his intellectual rigor and willingness to back up what he believes and to have the tough conversations. For that much I really, really respect him coming on. But I can't hide my opinion on this hoax. I think it was garbage and it was latched onto unskeptically by people who fancy themselves critical thinkers. I challenge James on the paper and we get to hear his side of it. Today's episode is actually 2 in 1, because after the conversation I reminded James to send me the links corroborating his arguments. When I received them, I was appalled that each description of the scholarly articles he sent was a lazy and ideologically motivated strawman. As such, I emailed him a heads up that I would be going in depth into his sources and describing exactly how he (or maybe Real Peer Review, if that was his source) is either intentionally or just ignorantly misunderstanding these abstracts. I'm incredibly disappointed at this dishonest or careless behavior. If you are going to waltz into a field that ISN'T your expertise and claim that the bulk of it is bunk, it is incumbent upon you to do the research and know what you're talking about. For the sake of transparency, I will paste word for word the sources email James sent me: "Hi Thomas, In all the fuss, I can't remember what I was supposed to send you, but I'll give it a try. The Wright State community collected hundreds of toys and other items for children in Greene and Montgomery counties through the university’s annual Holiday for Kids Christmas gift drive hosted by We Serve U. Donated toys will be given to Greene County Children Services and The Toy Cottage, in association with Montgomery County Children Services and managed by For Love of Children (FLOC). Greene County Children Services collected toys and other gifts donated by Wright State at the Van Cleve building Dec. 5. FLOC will collect toys Thursday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m., also at the Van Cleve building. Wright State has hosted annual toy drives for more than 20 years. This is the second year We Serve U has hosted the drive. This year, more than 800 gifts were donated, eclipsing last year’s total of 750 gifts. “We do this because we want to help needy families in our area,” said Joanie Hendricks, data analyst for Institutional Research at Wright State and co-chair of We Serve U. “Helping to share the joy of the holidays with others makes us all feel good.” Many Wright State organizations and offices sponsored 30 families for Greene County Children Services. The agency provided Wright State with a list of families and their Christmas wish list. Individuals and groups chose to “adopt” a family and donate a few practical and enjoyable gifts.

Main Topics   Dan's Topic: Introducing the Edit & Forget It Challenge! 2013 Fewer Things in 2013  We're kicking things up a notch right off the bat this year and really stretch our commitment to simplifying our lives. We're challenging ourselves with what we call Edit & Forget It, 2013 Fewer Things in 2013. We'd love it if you'd consider joining us! We know this is a lofty goal and certainly won't be for everyone Our true focus is eliminating many things we truly don't need any longer and reach a point where we have what we need, appreciate it, and be able to enjoy some margin in our lives We don't really have "clutter" in our home since Vanessa is a Professional Organizer, so eliminating 2013 things will be a real challenge! It's good to have an accountability buddy when challenging yourself…and all of you that listen to the show will be our accountability buddies to keep us on track! We'd like to be your accountability buddies, too! If you'd like to join us for the challenge, just sign up on our Edit & Forget It List. Here's a direct link to that list on SimpleLifeTogether.com. Those who sign up will will get emails from us from time to time as a little bit of encouragement along the way No, you won’t get a trophy at the end of the Challenge, but in the end you'll probably have a place to put one if you did! Some Background: We were amazed when we heard it quoted in a presentation that the average American home has around 300K things in it! In raw numbers, 2013 things is just under 1% of that! That doesn't sound like much of a challenge does it? Truth be told, we think that figure counts each and every item So if you had a 250 piece Lego set it counts as 250 pieces That doesn’t seem too realistic to us and kinda makes getting rid of 2013 things no challenge whatsoever So we established some simple guidelines for ourselves To eliminate 2013 things from our home in 2013 the numbers work out, rounded up, anyways, like this: About 6 things per day About 40 things per week About 170 per month We're also including going paperless because that is a great way to eliminate paper clutter from your home. So, you may want to re-listen to Episode 6 and our interview with Brooks Duncan of DocumentSnap. We'll put some links in the show notes for the scanner we use and the one Brooks recommends. Edit & Forget It Guidelines: Note: We may have to come up with some additional guidelines for ourselves along the way based on any new discoveries or unanswered questions we run into. But we're starting with these: Things that normally go together or that you originally purchased together count as one, e.g. a pair of shoes counts as one (not 2), a deck of cards counts as one (not 52) a puzzle counts as one (not 150). Donated packaged food counts, thrown out food does not. Scanned documents count as one original if disposed of. A document is a document whether it is a single page by itself or a ten page document. Each scanned document counts as one item. Things that we don't ordinarily keep in our home (like junk mail, catalogs, etc) don't count for us as we recycle those immediately upon receipt.

Donated kidneys are more likely to go to older men than women. This is most likely due to women not being placed on the transplant list. The second report focuses on the results of MRI and PET scans that show remarkable similarities between the brains of gay men and straight women, and between those of lesbians and straight men.
