“Live From New York, it's Saturday Night!” That single sentence has become a catchphrase for devotees of comedy and popular culture over the past 50 years—generations of fans who willingly turn their attentions from the height of weekend revelry to the televised antics of Saturday Night Live. Week in, week out for more than two decades, a single photographer has conjured visual magic behind the scenes, creating inventive and irreverent portraits that air for three seconds each as so-called “bumpers” that transition to and from the show's commercial breaks. She took out a warrant for his arrest for failing to pay alimony, and put a restraining order on him. Check mate.Initially intending to make a quick knock off, Marvin became fascinated with the project, devoting himself to making it a passionate sacrifice, detailing the death of love. It was a critical and commercial failure upon its release, but has since been reconsidered, and is now thought of as one of his finest achievements. The title cut that introduces the album disturbingly cuts off in mid-phrase - a distinctly telling gesture.WALL OF DEATH / RICHARD AND LINDA THOMPSONLinda was pregnant with Richard's third child when producer Joe Boyd got them into the studio to record the album “Shoot Out the Lights” - a record which Rolling Stone designated as #9 on its list of the “Best Albums of the 1980s”.  They were supposed to tour immediately after to promote the record, but unfortunately, this had to be delayed to allow Linda to give birth. In the interim, Richard, who had fallen in love with another woman, dropped the bad news on her as they set out on tour.After being together for 10 years, and Linda converting to Sufi Islam for Richard, renouncing worldly pleasures, she was now trapped inside a loveless, commercial obligation, ironically, to promote their finest collaboration.Wall of Death, which closes the album, depicts love as a dangerous carnival ride in which you take your chances at calamity, but still want to go back to ride, again and again.

This week we talk about AI therapy chatbots, delusions of grandeur, and sycophancy.We also discuss tech-triggered psychosis, AI partners, and confident nonsense.Recommended Book: Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin SloanTranscriptIn the context of artificial intelligence systems, a hallucination or delusion, sometimes more brusquely referred to as AI BS, is an output usually from an AI chatbot, but it can also be from another type of AI system, that's basically just made up.Sometimes this kind of output is just garbled nonsense, as the AI systems, those based on large language models, anyway, are essentially just predicting what words will come next in the sentences they're writing based on statistical patterns. That means they can string words together, and then sentences together, and then paragraphs together in what seems like a logical and reasonable way, and in some cases can even cobble together convincing stories or code or whatever else, because systems with enough raw materials to work from have a good sense of what tends to go where, and thus what's good grammar and what's not, what code will work and what code will break your website, and so on.In other cases, though, AI systems will seem to just make stuff up, but make it up convincingly enough that it can be tricky to detect the made up component of its answers.Some writers have reported asking AI to provide feedback on their stories, for instance, only to later discover that the AI didn't have access to the stories, and they were providing feedback based on the title, or based on the writer's prompt—the text the writer used to ask the AI for feedback. And their answers were perhaps initially convincing enough that the writer didn't realize the AI hadn't read the pieces they asked them to criticize, and the AI systems, because most of them are biased to sycophancy, toward brown-nosing the user and not saying anything that might upset them, or saying what it believes they want to hear, they'll provide general critique that sounds good, that lines up with what their systems tell them should be said in such contexts, but which is completely disconnected from those writings, and thus, not useful to the writer as a critique.That combination of confabulation and sycophancy can be brutal, especially as these AI systems become more powerful and more convincing. They seldom make the basic grammatical and reality-based errors they made even a few years ago, and thus it's easy to believe you're speaking to something that's thinking or at the bare-minimum, that understands what you're trying to get it to help you with, or what you're talking about. It's easy to forget when interacting with such systems that you're engaged not with another human or thinking entity, but with software that mimics the output of such an entity, but which doesn't experience the same cognition experienced by the real-deal thinking creatures it's attempting to emulate.What I'd like to talk about today is another sort of AI-related delusion—one experienced by humans interacting with such systems, not the other way around—and the seeming, and theoretical, pros and cons of these sorts of delusional responses.—Research that's looked into the effects of psychotherapy, including specific approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy and group therapy, show that such treatments are almost aways positive, with rare exceptions, grant benefits that tend to last well past the therapy itself—so people who go to therapy tend to benefit from it even after the session, and even after they stop going to therapy, if they eventually stop going for whatever reason, and that the success rate, the variability of positive impacts, vary based on the clinical location, the therapist, and so on, but only by about 5% or less for each of those variables; so even a not perfectly aligned therapist or a less than ideal therapy location will, on average, benefit the patient.That general positive impact is part of the theory underpinning the use of AI systems for therapy purposes.Instead of going into a therapist's office and speaking with a human being for an hour or so at a time, the patient instead speaks or types to an AI chatbot that's been optimized for this purpose. So it's been primed to speak like a therapist, to have a bunch of therapy-related resources in its training data, and to provide therapy-related resources to the patient with whom it engages.There are a lot of downsides to this approach, including the fact that AI bots are flawed in so many ways, are not actual humans, and thus can't really connect with patients the way a human therapist might be able to connect with them, they have difficulty shifting from a trained script, as again, these systems are pulling from a corpus of training data and additional documents to which they have access, and that means they'll tend to handle common issues and patient types pretty well, but anything deviating from that is a toss-up, and, as I mentioned in the intro, there's a chance they'll just make stuff up or brown-nose the patient, saying things it seems like the patient wants to hear, rather than the things the patient needs to hear for their mental health.On the upside, though, there's a chance some people who wouldn't feel comfortable working with a human therapist will be more comfortable working with a non-human chatbot, many people don't have physical access to therapists or therapy centers, or don't have insurance that covers what they need in this regard, and some people have other monetary or physical or mental health issues that makes therapy inaccessible or non-ideal for whatever reason, and these systems could help fill in the gaps for them, giving them something imperfect, but, well, 80% of what you need can be a lot better than 0% of what you need. In theory, at least.That general logic is a big part of why the therapy AI bot boom has been so substantial, despite the many instances of human patients seemingly being driven to suicide or other sorts of self-harm after interacting with these bots, which in some cases were later found to either nudge their patients in that direction, or support their decisions to do so. And that's alongside the other issues associated with any app that sends the user's information to a third location for processing, like the collection of their data for marketing and other purposes.The therapy chatbot industry is just one corner of a much larger conversation about what's become known as ChatGPT Psychosis, which is shorthand for the delusions some users of these AI chatbots, those made by ChatGPT and those made by other companies, begin to have while interacting with these bots, or maybe already had, but then have amplified by their interactions with these systems.The stories have been piling up, reported in the Times, in Rolling Stone, and in scientific journals, and the general narrative is that someone who seems to be doing fine, but who's maybe a little depressed or unhappy, a little anxious, but nothing significant, at least to those around them, starts interacting with a chatbot, then gets really, really absorbed in that interaction, and then at some point those around this person realize that their friend or child or spouse or whomever is beginning to have delusions of grandeur, believing themselves to be a prophet or god, or maybe they're starting to see the world as just an intertangled mess of elaborate, unbacked conspiracy theories, or they come to believe the entire world revolves around them in some fundamental way, or everyone is watching and talking about them—that genre of delusion.Many such people end up feeling as if they're living inside nihilistic and solipsistic nightmares, where nothing has meaning and they're perhaps the only entity of any importance on the planet—everyone else is just playing a minor role in their fantastical existence.Different chatbots have different skins, in the sense that their outputs are tailored in different ways, to have a different valence and average personality. Some chatbots, like ChatGPT's GPT-4o, have had their sycophancy setting set so high that it rendered them almost completely useless before it was eventually fixed—early users reported feeling unsettled by their interactions with this bot when it was first released, because it was such a shameless yes-man, they couldn't get any useful information from it, and all the language it used to deliver the information it did provide made them feel like they were being manipulated by a slavish underling.For some people, though, that type of presentation, that many compliments and that much fawning attention, will feel good, or feel right.Maybe they're disempowered throughout their day in countless subtle and overt ways, and having someone—even if that someone isn't real—speak to them like they're important and valuable and smart and attractive and perhaps even the most important person in the world, maybe that feels good.Others maybe feel like they have hidden potential that's never been appreciated, and if the chatbot they're referencing for all sorts of answers about things, and which seems to have most of those answers, and is thus a believable source of good, correct information, starts to talk to them as if they're the messiah, well, maybe they start to believe they are important, are some kind of messiah: after all, it's right about so many other things, so why not this thing? It's something which many of us, to greater or lesser degrees, at least, possibly not always to that extreme, would be psychologically primed to believe, at least on some level, because it feels good to feel important, and so many social narratives, in some cultures at least, make this seem like something that does happen and might someday happen to us.This effect might be even more pronounced in people who have underlying conditions, like depression or anxiety, and even more so those with conditions like schizophrenia that leave a person prone to various sorts of psychosis.Folks with such conditions, diagnosed or not, are already frequently triggered by things like social media, which, because of the way these platforms scoop up data and target content at users, can make folks who look at TikTok and scan their Instagram feed feel like the center of the universe, like they're being watched, like folks they don't know are sending messages to them, or like there's some kind of pattern they need to figure out and which they've caught a glimpse of, and which seems really, really important.This is part of why many experts are saying that if AI chatbots are going to be used therapeutically, they should absolutely be used in a hybrid situation, where there are humans in the loop who are capable of checking to make sure the information being conveyed is accurate and not enflaming psychosis, and so they can ensure medication is being prescribed and used, if appropriate. There needs to be someone who can talk someone down and tell them when their brain is leading them awry, basically, which is not something chatbots are generally capable of doing right now—they're more likely to reinforce a user's incorrect theories and ideas and understandings, which of course can lead to a slew of other issues across all sorts of other industries and fields, as well, including general knowledge about the world and current events.Speaking of the news, though, there are just as many articles, these days, reporting on folks who seem to have found love with AI chatbots as there are people who have committed violent acts against others, or various sorts of self-harm as a result of interacting with them.Some of these pieces are written salaciously—look at these silly people doing silly things—but many do a pretty good job of at least attempting balance, as while the majority of folks featured in these articles seem to be missing something in terms of human interaction, which then presumably put them in the right state of mind to have romantic or companionable feelings toward an unthinking software system, the flip side of that coin is that many of them seem to be happier now than before they met these systems and brought them into their lives in this way.We have, then, on one hand, AI chatbots telling their users to assassinate celebrities and, in at least one case, British Royalty, and on the other, we have sometimes the same chatbots made by the same companies telling people they are worthwhile and loved and appreciated and that's exactly what some of their users need to hear at that moment.It's been argued, often convincingly, that these sorts of AI-human relationships are a crutch, and a massively unstable one. These systems are prone to change as the models behind them and the businesses that make and maintain those models change, and many of the stories about these people who have these relationships end with their AI partner or spouse suddenly losing interest in them, becoming cold, or in some other way no longer providing what they once provided.This can be a bad moment for these people who again, in many cases seemed to be lacking something from the humans in their lives, and these AI systems kind of filled in the gaps for them. That's what a crutch does, wobbly or not.More ideal, according to the folks keeping tabs on these happenings and who are doing research in this space, at least, would be systems that help folks fill these gaps in more holistic and permanent ways, improving their social or physical or psychological situations so that they don't rely on software entities and the potential delusions, positive or negative, that come with them. He wrote some of the band's best-known songs, including “Hole in My Shoe” and “Feelin' Alright?” which went on to be covered in a memorable version by Joe Cocker. After touring and recording with Delaney & Bonnie (who recorded Dave's song “Only You Know and I Know”), he joined an early version of Eric Clapton's Derek & The Dominos. Dave soon left to pursue a solo career, beginning with the Alone Together album. He has released three Gold-certified solo albums and one Platinum album, Let It Flow, which featured the hit “We Just Disagree.” In addition to his solo releases and a duet album with Mama Cass Elliot, Dave has appeared on such legendary recordings as “Street Fighting Man” by the Rolling Stones, “All Along the Watchtower” by Jimi Hendrix, “Listen to What the Man Said” by Paul McCartney and Wings, as well as George Harrison's All Things Must Pass album. In the 1990s Dave spent time as a member of Fleetwood Mac, contributing original songs to the band's Time album in 1995. He has recorded with Michael Jackson, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, Donovan, Phoebe Snow, and many others. Dave was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic and, in 2024, published his memoir, Only You Know and I Know.

Every year, there's a song of summer. It's often something to argue over when conversation lags at the barbecue. Andy talks about the return of Oasis, why he thinks the brothers decided to get back together, and gives his thoughts on what he has seen from the shows so far. Andy also talks about the reunions that still need to happen while they still can. Steve and Andy then move on to the last Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne concert. Ozzy pulled it off, Steve Tyler sounds incredible, and who was the band that Sharon kicked off the gig? Next, the guys talk about Matt Cameron leaving Pearl Jam. Why? What is next for Matt? NEON COWGIRL  "The Neon Cowgirl-towering over Broadway like the patron saint of heartbreak in downtown Nashville as she smiles coyly over her shoulder in red cowboy boots-watched me grow up. Basking in her glow, I walked wide-eyed into the Ryman Auditorium as a 16 year-old, clutching my ticket. Later that night, dreaming of standing on that stage,  I drifted off to sleep in the bunk of our home on wheels at the KOA next to the Opry. When I was 18, she saw me flipping through Loretta Lynn CDs in Ernest Tubb Record Shop after performing the breakfast and lunch shows on the General Jackson showboat with my parents and brothers in our family band, The Neilsons. At 25, she watched me running all over town, meeting up with other songwriters-writing, writing, writing-before I had to fly back home to Canada again. At 30, I returned as a newlywed on my honeymoon, flying in from New Zealand where I'd moved for love, holding hands with my new husband in Hatch Show Print, introducing him to her like a family member. A decade passed without her as I built a life on the other side of the world and raised 2 babies. My heart raced as I returned to her once again, to showcase at Americanafest, playing to 12 people at 3rd and Lindsley. 5 years and many showcases later, I swear she smiled right at me as I stopped to point her out to my two children as we walked past her, through the doors of the Ryman to finally perform for the first time. NEON COWGIRL represents a lifelong dream of chasing Nashville and country music. I've loved her my whole life, even when she breaks my heart over and over again."   This weeks guest = Tami Neilson - through much hard work,  fierce determination and drive has begun to make all her dreams come true. She is blessed with a voice that's been described as "a fire breathing R&B belter" by Rolling Stone. Tami has now played the Ryman, sung a duet with her hero Willie Nelson. Travelled the highways and cities of the USA and Canada in an RV  with her NZ family,  so they could experience where she came from and the places on the planet she was singing about. Her latest adventure was opening for Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan as part of the Outlaw Music Festival.  Dreams DO come true. She's done all this while dealing with health issues and her brother Jay's recovery from major surgery.

We covered the self-titled debut album from Crosby, Stills & Nash in episode 137.  Deja Vu is considered the second Crosby, Stills & Nash album, but it is actually the first album by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with Canadian songwriter Neil Young turning the trio into a quartet.While the album continues to feature the signature harmonies associated with Crosby, Stills & Nash, it has a harder, more rocking edge to it. Some of this is undoubtedly due to the addition of Neil Young to the album, but it also reflects the challenges the group members were facing.  Both Stephen Stills and Graham Nash had gone through break-ups in their relationships, and David Crosby tragically had lost his girlfriend Christine Hinton in a car accident.The album was highly anticipated, generating $2 million in pre-sales before its release.  It became a gold record only 14 days after release, and was on the Billboard 200 album chart for 88 weeks.  Contemporary critics provided mixed reviews, but the album has only grown in stature over time, with many reviews considering it amongst the top albums ever produced.  Deja Vu was inducted into the Grammy Hall of fame in 2012.After its release, each of the principal members of the group would record solo albums, and the success of Deja Vu contributed to the individual success of these four solo projects.Crosby, Stills & Nash (and sometimes Young) would continue to produce albums over the decades with their last collaboration occurring in 2015.  The death of David Crosby in 2023 ended the possibility of full reunions.Wayne brings us this soft rock singer-songwriter live album for this week's podcast. Carry OnThe opening track to the album was penned by Stephen Stills who also provides lead vocals.  It is a medley of two songs edited together with a jam session connector, and came together surprisingly fast during a time when most songs were taking a long time to finish.  The lyrics encourage the band members to keep going through times of struggle in relationships both within and outside the band.Teach Your ChildrenGraham Nash wrote this song in 1968 when he was with The Hollies, but had not recorded it with that group at the time.  Nash has associated the song with a photograph exhibit showing a child playing with a toy hand grenade, and the lyrics encourage parents to be careful in how they teach their children.  Neil Young does not play on this song, but the steel guitar is provided by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. WoodstockUnlike the other tracks on this album, this song was not written by any of the band members, but was penned by Joni Mitchell.  Mitchell had not attended the Woodstock festival, but was inspired to write this song told from the perspective of a concert goer after hearing her then-boyfriend Graham Nash relay the account.  It has become a signature song for the group and a staple of the 60's counter-culture.  Our HouseGraham Nash wrote this song as a description of a day spent with then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell and her two cats in their Laurel Canyon home.  The song was written in an hour on Mitchel's piano.  It went to number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion Picture "Patton"This epic starring George C. Scott was playing in the theaters in 1970.  It won seven Academy awards, including Best Picture. STAFF PICKS:Let It Be by The BeatlesLynch starts the staff picks with a song inspired by a dream.  Paul McCartney's mother, Mary Patricia McCartney, died of cancer with Paul was 14.  In the dream, his mother encourages her son by saying, "It's all right, just let it be."  This single and title song from the final Beatles album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 before topping those charts.Cecilia by Simon & GarfunkelRob brings us the third single from the fifth and final album by Simon & Garfunkel, "Bridge Over Troubled Water."  It was developed in a late night jam when the duo and friends were banging on a piano bench and recording the sound with a tape recorder.  The lyrics depict the heartbreak of a boy delivered from Cecilia his unfaithful lover.The Rapper by The JaggerzBruce features the most successful single from the band whose guitarist and primary songwriter would go on to be Donny Iris.  The song is a warning to the ladies not to be taken in by a smooth talking man telling them lies.  It went to number 2 on the charts.Superlungs My Supergirl by Terry ReidWayne's closes out the staff picks with a cover originally written by Donovan about a 14-year old groupie.  Terry Reid was Jimmy Page's first pick to be lead singer of Led Zeppelin, but was unavailable at the time due to his touring schedule with Cream and the Rolling Stones.  Reid would acquire the nickname of Superlungs. NOVELTY TRACK:Pineapple and the Monkey by The FacesThis instrumental from The Faces debut album takes us out for this week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Then, Mackenzie Knight Boyle from the Federation of American Scientists walks us through the scale and secrecy of the U.S. nuclear weapons program — and the risks it poses to the world. And we even saw the GHF's own executive director, Jake Wood, resign in protest in May, saying that he couldn't work in a way that didn't adhere to these humanitarian principles.Hassan El-TayyabMackenzie Knight-Boyle is a Senior Research Associate for the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, where she co-authors the Nuclear Notebook––an authoritative open-source estimate of global nuclear forces and trends.Probably the scariest false alarm was in 1979, A training cassette that was simulating a massive attack with nuclear missiles from the Soviet Union on the United States was mistakenly entered into the primary computer system of North American Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD. And it was then broadcast to other command centers as if it was going out in the National Command Authority alert system. And because of that, the proper procedures were followed for a situation like this, where the fighter jets took off. The nuclear bombers, carrying nuclear weapons, were put into the sky, missile crews were put on high alert, which means the missiles are ready to launch within seconds. And the president's doomsday plane, which is essentially the war room in the sky for the president in emergency situations, was also put into the air. The New York City Board of Elections has released the final results in the Democratic Mayoral primary – after accounting for reallocation of votes via ranked-choice tabulations. The final results are stunning. Zohran Mamdani, up by approximately seven points on election night, has emerged with a whopping 12-point victory over disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Perhaps even more impressive, Mamdani completely reshaped the electorate. According to the New York Times, he turned out young people in record numbers to the point that the largest voter bloc in this election was 18–29-year-olds, a complete reversal of usual trends.2. Speaking of reversing trends, it is worth reviewing Zohran's victory in light of the groups he won by large margins. Namely men, including young men of all backgrounds, as well as Latino and Asian voters, per Jacobin. These are groups that Democrats have notably lost ground with, including in New York City, and have devoted considerable resources to winning back to their coalition. Zohran's win therefore should give Democrats a new sense of optimism and they should seek to embrace the winning course that he has charted.3. Of course, being the Democratic Party, they are instead doing the opposite. Despite his earthquake victory, few high-profile New York Democrats have endorsed Zohran. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has not, nor has Governor Kathy Hochul, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, or other powerful New York House Democrats like Gregory Meeks. The other U.S. Senator from New York, Kirsten Gillibrand, has been openly hostile, calling Zohran “permissive [of] violence against Jews,” in an interview with Brian Lehrer on WNYC. This is of course racist, inflammatory and flatly untrue. Under pressure from other Democrats, Gillibrand retracted her statement, and “apologized for mischaracterizing Mamdani's record and for her tone on the call,” according to POLITICO. This however gives us a taste of the kind of dirty tricks and defamatory rhetoric the party could deploy against Mamdani between now and November.4. That said, Zohran is picking up significant backing locally – an indication that those actually on the ground know which way the wind is blowing. On Monday, Mamdani was endorsed by the NYC Central Labor Council-AFL-CIO. The NYCCLC is “the nation's largest regional labor federation…[bringing] together 300 unions… [and representing] more than 1 million workers.” On Tuesday, he won the endorsement of New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who represents Westchester, according to reporter Vaughn Golden. Zohran has already earned the endorsement of New York Attorney General Tish James. Expect this divergence between national and local Democratic figures to continue.5. In stark contrast to Zohran, whose political brand is defined by seemingly endless energy, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman shocked observers this week when he complained about having to do the bare minimum as a U.S. Senator. According to Rolling Stone, during Senate deliberations on the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill,” Fetterman was quoted saying “I just want to go home. I've missed our entire trip to the beach.” Fetterman's comments are particularly galling seeing as he has been chronically absent from Senate hearings, committee meetings and even votes. In other words, Fetterman is complaining about doing the bare minimum for the people of Pennsylvania, but is failing to do even that.6. The bill did of course pass, with Vice-President JD Vance voting to break a 50-50 tie vote in the Senate. On Twitter, Vance justified his vote from criticism regarding its massive cuts to Medicaid by saying “The thing that will bankrupt this country more than any other policy is flooding the country with illegal immigration and then giving those migrants generous benefits. The OBBB fixes this problem. And therefore it must pass.” AOC called his vote, “An absolute and utter betrayal of working families.”7. In more news related to the bill, Trump and Elon Musk have been trading threats regarding its passage. On Monday, TIME reported Elon Musk tweeted, “If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uni-party, so that the people actually have a voice.” Musk added, “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame…they will lose their primary next year, if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.” Musk has also reportedly thrown his financial weight behind Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky, perhaps the most vocal critic of Trump in the House Republican caucus. Trump is already backing a primary challenge against Massie; Musk intervening on the other side has turned this race into a climactic proxy battle between the two figures once called “co-presidents.”8. Trump, for his part, threatened to deport Elon Musk. Asked about this directly, Trump told reporters, “We'll have to take a look. We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? The monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn't that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies,” per USA Today. This is of course true. Musk's companies have received billions in corporate welfare from the federal government over the years. It is unclear how much the stock value of, for instance Tesla, would suffer from the money faucet being turned off.9. Entertaining as Trump's threats to deport Musk are however, we should not lose sight of the ever-darker reality of deportation setting in nationwide. NOLA.com reports “An Iranian woman who has lived in the United States for 47 years, has no criminal record, and is married to a US citizen was detained by ICE as she gardened outside her New Orleans home.” Expect to hear more stories of secret police rounding up law abiding Americans in the days to come.10. Finally, in more positive news, Reuters reports China is quietly moving to rebuild Cuba's energy grid. This report notes that “Officials…announced China was participating in a project to modernize Cuba's entire electrical grid, with 55 solar parks to be built in 2025, and another 37 by 2028, for a total of 2,000 MW - a massive undertaking that, when complete, would represent nearly two-thirds of present-day demand.” Cuba joined China's international infrastructure development program Belt and Road in 2018. This report notes that China is taking on the development role that Russia formerly played in Havana, but has been unable to deliver on since it embarked on its special military operation-turned-quagmire in Ukraine. Cuba's energy grid has experienced continue failures for the past several years for myriad reasons, exacerbated by Trump's increasingly draconian sanctions regime.
