In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we bring you an episode from Inheriting Season One. Inheriting is a show about Asian American and Pacific Islander families, which explores how one event in history can ripple through generations. Bảo Trương’s parents both fled Vietnam in 1975 following the war. His father Thuận was a pilot for the South Vietnamese Air Force and left the day before the Fall of Saigon, evacuating almost 100 people to Thailand on a plane. Thuận has now been settled in the U.S. for decades, but he still writes songs mourning the Vietnam of his childhood – a country that, to him, no longer exists because it is still under a communist government. On the flipside, his son Bảo wants to live in the Vietnam of today, a yearning his father doesn’t understand. In this episode, the father and son sit down for a frank conversation about the country they both long for, in different ways. Grow your business–no matter what stage you’re in. Honoring Sacrifice: Veterans Reflect on Their Service and the Meaning of Memorial Day.  This poignant discussion on Memorial Day with two distinguished Vietnam War veterans, Vincent (U.S. Navy) and Steve (U.S. Air Force). They share their personal enlistment stories, experiences in Vietnam, and the profound significance of Memorial Day. Vincent and Steve reflect on the sacrifices of fallen comrades, the importance of educating younger generations about patriotism, and the camaraderie that helped them through tough times. The episode underscores the need to honor and remember those who served, particularly through community events like the Grayslake Memorial Day Parade. Honoring the Sacrifice: A Deep Dive into Memorial Day with Vietnam Veterans In this special episode of "Discovering Grayslake," we delve into the profound significance of Memorial Day through the eyes of two distinguished Vietnam War veterans, Vincent Mark Taranto and Steve MacInnis. Hosted by Speaker 1, this episode offers a heartfelt exploration of the personal experiences, reflections, and insights of these veterans, shedding light on the true meaning of Memorial Day.  Understanding Memorial Day: More Than Just a Day Off The True Meaning of Memorial Day Speaker 1 opens the discussion by emphasizing that Memorial Day is not just a day for barbecues and leisure but a solemn occasion to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Vincent Mark Taranto (Speaker 2) underscores this by highlighting the importance of educating others about the distinction between Memorial Day and other patriotic holidays like Independence Day. He stresses that saying "Happy Memorial Day" misses the point, as the day is meant to honor those who are no longer with us. Personal Reflections on Service and Sacrifice Vincent shares his poignant experiences from his time in Vietnam, reflecting on the young lives lost during the war. He recalls the emotional weight of seeing caskets draped in flags and the impact of losing friends in combat. One particularly moving story involves his college roommate, Michael D. Oliver, a lance corporal in the Marine Corps, whose obituary he heard on the Armed Forces Radio. This moment prompted him to pay tribute to Michael during a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, capturing a powerful photograph pointing at Michael's name on the wall. Steve MacInnis (Speaker 3) adds to this by sharing his own experiences of returning home from Vietnam and the lack of support and understanding from society. He describes how he and other veterans were met with hostility and indifference, leading to feelings of isolation and frustration. The Journey to Enlistment: Different Paths, Same Destination Vincent's Story Vincent recounts his decision to enlist in the U.S. Navy after realizing he would likely be drafted. He chose the Navy based on the uniforms and enlisted on November 17, 1965, going active in January 1966. His journey took him to various locations, including the Philippines and Danang, where he worked with the Marines and experienced the intense atmosphere of a combat zone. Steve's Story Steve's path to enlistment was different. After a year at Oregon State University, he decided to enlist in the Air Force to avoid being drafted into the Army. Despite trying to avoid the physical exam, he ended up passing and joined the Air Force, eventually serving in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. His entry into Vietnam was marked by a sobering realization as he witnessed the return of bodies from the war, a stark reminder of the reality of combat. Camaraderie and Humor: Coping Mechanisms in Difficult Times Building Bonds Both veterans emphasize the importance of camaraderie in coping with the challenges of military service. Steve recalls playing softball after shifts and engaging in social activities to unwind and support each other. Vincent agrees, highlighting how they looked out for one another regardless of their backgrounds, forming strong bonds that helped them through tough times. Moments of Humor Humor also played a crucial role in maintaining morale. The veterans share anecdotes of light-hearted moments that provided much-needed relief from the stress of combat. These moments of levity were essential in fostering a sense of unity and resilience among the troops. Honoring the Fallen: Personal Tributes and Community Involvement Remembering Friends Both veterans share stories of specific individuals they honor on Memorial Day. Vincent remembers his close friend, James Edward Hays, a chopper pilot who lost his life in Vietnam. He recalls the profound honor of being a pallbearer at James's funeral. Steve reflects on the importance of remembering those who served bravely and the impact they had on their lives. Community Events The discussion highlights the significance of community events in honoring the fallen. The Grayslake Memorial Day Parade is mentioned as a key event that brings the community together to pay tribute to veterans. Zoe (Speaker 4) describes how the parade culminates in a ceremony at Memorial Park, where the names of local veterans who lost their lives are read aloud, serving as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices. Educating Future Generations: Instilling Patriotism and Respect The Role of Veterans Both Vincent and Steve emphasize the importance of educating younger generations about the values of patriotism and service. Vincent shares his experiences speaking to youth about the realities of military service, urging them to appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans throughout history. Steve highlights the need for veterans to share their stories to provide a more accurate understanding of what Memorial Day represents. Engaging the Community The veterans encourage listeners to participate in local events, such as parades and memorial services, to honor fallen soldiers. They also suggest simple acts of kindness, such as displaying flags and memorials in their yards, to remind the community of the sacrifices made by veterans. Conclusion: A Message of Hope and Resilience As the episode draws to a close, the host thanks the veterans for their service and encourages listeners to engage in acts of kindness, particularly towards veterans. He challenges everyone to show appreciation for those who have served, whether through a simple thank you or by participating in community events that honor their sacrifices. This episode of "Discovering Grayslake" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of Memorial Day and the need to honor the sacrifices of veterans. Through their personal stories, Vincent and Steve shed light on the challenges faced by veterans and the need for society to recognize and support them. By educating future generations and participating in community events, we can ensure that the memories of fallen soldiers are kept alive and inspire pride in our nation.

His Greatest Adrenaline Rush? Serving Others: John Graham John Graham shipped out on a freighter to Asia when he was 16, hitchhiked through the Algerian Revolution at 19 and was on the team that made the first ascent of Mt. McKinley's North Wall at 20, a climb so dangerous it's never been repeated. He hitchhiked around the world at 22, working as a correspondent for the Boston Globe in every war he came across.A U.S. Foreign Service Officer for fifteen years, he served in Libya during the 1969 revolution and in one of the most difficult and dangerous areas in Vietnam during the war there.. For three years in the mid-seventies, he was a member of NATO's top-secret Nuclear Planning Group, then served as a foreign policy advisor for Sen. John Glenn. During a posting at the United Nations, however, his life began to turn. He became deeply involved in U.S. human rights initiatives, including the fight against apartheid in South Africa.Still, something was missing. In 1980, a close brush with death aboard a burning cruise ship in a typhoon in the North Pacific forced him to accept a deeper meaning for his life. He found it in 1983, when he became and still works as a leader of the Giraffe Heroes Project, a global nonprofit moving people to stick their necks out for the common good—and giving them the tools to succeedTo learn more about John Graham, visit www.johngraham.orgTo explore Beyond the Crucible resources, including our free Trials-to-Triumphs Self-Assessment, visit beyondthecrucible.com.Enjoy the show?         Ray Jason has been writing the Sea Gypsy Philosopher blog, for the last twelve years largely touching on politics and social issues.  His commentary is filtered through his unusual lived experience of being a longtime ex-pat open water sailor living on his boat, the Aventura.      Ray's greatest contribution to the blogosphere is his Sea Gypsy Tribe concept — his belief that small bands of ocean-dwelling cruisers can both survive and flourish after any type of catastrophe which is the main thrust of our conversation here Ray's personal life path has been quite out of the ordinary.  Right after college graduation, he was drafted and ended up in Vietnam on a U.S. Navy ammunition ship.  Post-service malaise steered him away from the so-calleed Real World and he spent the next 20 years as a highly successful San Francisco street performer — juggling, his specialty.  When that scene began to deteriorate, he commenced his sea gypsy life and has not lived on land since 1992.      We speak with Ray today aboard his sailboat somewhere in the Banana Latitudes of Central America.

From Refugee to Bestselling Children's Author In this heartwarming episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty sits down with the extraordinary Anh Do - a comedian, actor, author, and artist who's captured the hearts of millions with his incredible storytelling. Anh Do's latest book, Wolf Girl, isn't just another children's novel - it's a powerful narrative inspired by his own remarkable life story. Born in Vietnam and escaping as a refugee on a tiny nine-meter fishing boat, Do brings a unique perspective to children's literature that's both entertaining and deeply meaningful. Wolf Girl follows the adventures of Gwen, a young girl separated from her family during an invasion, who finds a new family among a pack of dogs. Sound familiar? That's because Do weaves his own family's survival story into his narratives, creating books that are simultaneously fun, touching, and inspirational. With over 100 books published and more than 10 million copies sold worldwide, Do isn't just an author - he's a storytelling phenomenon. His approach to writing is refreshingly honest: create lots of content, knowing not everything will be perfect, but some gems will emerge. This philosophy, learned from his stand-up comedy days, has served him well across multiple creative disciplines. Do's commitment to children's literacy goes beyond writing. He's donated 40,000 books to disadvantaged children in Australia, remembering how five-cent books from thrift stores helped him fall in love with reading as a child. Upcoming fans can look forward to Wolf Girl becoming a film and his Weirdo series becoming a TV show - proving that Do's creative universe is expanding faster than ever. The episode is a masterclass in resilience, creativity, and the power of storytelling. Do's message is clear: dream big, work hard, and never be afraid to fail. Parents, educators, and kids alike will be inspired by this incredible conversation that proves sometimes the most amazing stories come from real life. We spend the whole program with Nadav Wieman, a former IDF sniper and now executive director of Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli veterans who expose the reality of life in the Occupied Territories and work to end the occupation. He and Ralph discuss Nadav's experience in the IDF and his work trying to turn the tide of sentiment in Israel against the ongoing genocide.Nadav Weiman is the executive director of Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli veterans who expose the reality of life in the Occupied Territories and work to end the occupation. Mr. Weiman served in a sniper's team in the special forces of the Nahal brigade and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He also worked as a history and literature teacher and was the legal guardian at a home for underprivileged teens in Tel Aviv. Now the soldiers that gave us testimonies told us that they came to the commander and said, "Okay, this is too much." And the commander said, "Listen, we lost too many dogs in the dog unit, so we're using Palestinians as human shields."Nadav Wieman former IDF sniper and Executive Director of Breaking the SilenceWhen the first soldier came to us in December 2023 and told us about using Palestinians as human shields, I thought it was an isolated event. But then another soldier came and another soldier and another soldier, and then we understood. It's a new protocol. It's called the Mosquito Protocol. “Mosquito,” is a code name on the radio saying, take a Palestinian man and put him in an IDF uniform, and in some cases a GoPro camera on his chest. And then soldiers were ordered to send them into tunnels to sweep the tunnels or into homes to sweep the homes.Nadav WiemanYou have another protocol called “Wasp”. The Wasp Protocol is Palestinians sweeping tunnels, but this time our Palestinians working with the IDF were brought from the West Bank. And they were told that they will get something from us, a permit or something like that.Nadav WiemanNews 5/16/251. Trump has abruptly ended the American war on the Houthi militia in Yemen, saying in a press conference, “You know, we hit them very hard. They had a great capacity to withstand punishment…You can say there's a lot of bravery there…It was amazing what they took. But we honor their commitment and their word,” per Prem Thakker. Behind the scenes, a New York Times report exposes the jaw-dropping waste that precipitated the U.S. backing down from this campaign. Some highlights include that the Houthis almost shot down an F-35 fighter jet – which run about $100 million apiece – that this campaign used so many precision munitions that Pentagon contingency planners grew “increasingly concerned about overall stocks,” and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM)'s reported metric of success was “bombs dropped,” evoking the failed campaigns in Vietnam, per the Stimson Center's Emma Ashburn. All in all, this campaign cost $1 billion over the course of just 30 days.2. In more stunning news of Pentagon profligacy, CNN reported on May 6th that a SECOND F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet fell off the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier into the Red Sea following the first lost jet by just over a week. Each of these planes bear a price tag of over $60 million, according to the Navy, just in case you were wondering where your tax dollars are going now that Trump and Musk have slashed the budget of anything resembling a social program.3. In more foreign policy news, Edan Alexander, the last remaining U.S. citizen hostage in Gaza, has been released. Alexander was born and raised in New Jersey, then moved to Israel to serve in the IDF after graduating high school in 2022. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was quoted saying “[Alexander's release] was achieved thanks to our military pressure and the political pressure exerted by President Trump. This is a winning combination.” Meanwhile Trump posted on Truth Social “Edan Alexander, American hostage thought dead, to be released by Hamas. Great news!” Despite this heraldry however, MSN reports Alexander “rebuffed” a personal meeting with Netanyahu. Counter Currents adds “In a video released by Hamas…last November, Alexander harshly criticized Netanyahu…[accusing] the Israeli leader of abandoning the…[hostages]…and urged Trump…to secure his release.” In this video, Alexander told Netanyahu, “You neglected us…We die a thousand times every day, and no one feels our pain.”4. In a similar vein, the Jerusalem Post reports, “The Trump administration's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, criticized Israel in a meeting with hostage families…[saying] ‘We want to bring the hostages home, but Israel is not willing to end the war.'” Witkoff added “Israel is prolonging [the war] despite the fact that we don't see where else we can go and that an agreement must be reached.” Further, the New Arab reports “The Trump administration has…dropped its longstanding demand for Hamas to disarm as a precondition for a Gaza ceasefire.” This willingness to call a spade a spade regarding Israel's intractable opposition to peace, or even a lasting ceasefire – coupled with a seemingly genuine willingness to realistically approach peace talks – has been a marked point of departure compared to the Biden administration, which “Never Pressured Israel for Ceasefire,” according to Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter, as reported in Drop Site News.5. Turning to some positive consumer protection news, “Ticketmaster will now show how much you'll pay for tickets — fees included — before checkout,” the Verge reports. This “All In Prices” initiative is an effort by the company to comply with the Federal Trade Commission's ban on junk fees. The FTC cracked down on Ticketmaster following the 2022 Taylor Swift Eras Tour “ticketing catastrophe.” In addition to the FTC, the Department of Justice sued Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation in 2024, accusing them of “driving up prices as a result of their alleged monopoly,” while the House passed the TICKET Act in 2024, a law that would “force ticket sellers to show full prices upfront.” The Senate is considering that bill now.6. Meanwhile, Igloo has voluntarily widened a recall of their coolers, related to “possible amputation and crushing hazards,” per ABC. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall notice for a little over a million Igloo 90 Qt. Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers back in February, on the basis that “the tow handle can pinch consumers' fingertips against the cooler,” risking “fingertip amputation.” ABC reports this recall now includes “130,000 additional coolers, as well as approximately 20,000 in Canada and 5,900 in Mexico.” According to the CPSC, “since the recall was initiated in February, Igloo has received 78 reports of injuries involving the recalled coolers, including 26 reports of bone fractures, fingertip amputations or lacerations.”7. The first American Pope, Leo XIV, addressed the College of Cardinals on Sunday, in part explaining his decision to take that particular name. According to Business Insider, AI played a major role. The Pope told the college, “I chose to take the name Leo XIV…mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical 'Rerum Novarum' addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution…In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice, and labor.” In a January 2024 message, Pope Francis said “At this time in history, which risks becoming rich in technology and poor in humanity, our reflections must begin with the human heart.”8. Turning to domestic politics, 25-year-old Democratic National Committee Vice Chair David Hogg is fighting an uphill battle to remain in his post. The activist and survivor of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting has been a target of the party hierarchs since he refused to disassociate himself from the mission of the organization he cofounded – Leaders We Deserve – which seeks to primary “asleep-at-the-wheel” Democrats. On May 10th, POLITICO reported that Hogg sought a compromise with the party, vowing that he would erect a “internal firewall,” barring him from “accessing any internal DNC information about congressional and state legislative races as long as he was supporting challengers.” The DNC flatly refused. Instead, it would seem they are trying to oust Hogg by voiding his election, claiming it violated “fairness and gender diversity,” rules, per Semafor. On May 13th, the DNC's Credentials Committee voted to nullify the results of the February election, the Hill reports. According to POLITICO, the full DNC could “opt to hold a virtual vote ahead of the meeting later this summer. Otherwise it will take the issue up during its August meeting.”9. In Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Ras Baraka was “arrested and detained by masked federal immigration police Friday when he joined three Democratic congressmembers set to tour a newly reopened 1,000-bed [ICE] jail run by GEO Group,” Democracy Now! reports. This is the latest installment in the power struggle between federal agents and local officials over immigration, an escalation from the arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan in April. Dugan herself was indicted this week for supposedly “obstructing or impeding a proceeding,” per Wisconsin Public Radio. Alina Habba, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, tweeted, “The Mayor of Newark…committed trespass…He has willingly chosen to disregard the law…He has been taken into custody.” She added in all caps, “NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.” Chilling words.10. Finally, we pay tribute to Uruguayan revolutionary, anti-dictatorship rebel and former president José “Pepe” Mujica, who passed away this week following a protracted battle with esophageal cancer. Mujica was celebrated throughout the world during his tenure as president for his humble lifestyle; He was called ‘the world's poorest president' famously driving a beat-up old VW bug and donating the bulk of his salary. In 2013, he delivered a bombshell speech at the United Nations in wherein he decried capitalism and the environmental destruction it has wrought. Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Greg Grandin eulogized Mujica, writing “He was a member of the insurgent, armed Tupamarus, and served 14 years in prison, much of it in solitary, subject to extreme torture techniques taught by US advisors… Upon his release, he helped build the Frente Amplio into one of the most successful left coalitions. He radiated humility and humanity but he knew that power was meant to be taken and used, and behind his smile was steel. He was 89.”This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. In Rising Voices of  El Cerrito's Young Poets, a Message About Resilience As our series about Californians and resilience continues, we hear from El Cerrito's poet laureate, Tess Taylor, and students at Harding Elementary School. They wrote about what resilience means to them for a recently published anthology called “Gardening in the Public Flowerfest.” For One Vietnamese Family in LA, This Broth Is Rich With Memories of Life Before and After War  Last month marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Hong Pham was only 6 years old when his family was separated as they fled Vietnam. When they were reunited in a refugee camp in Thailand, they celebrated with a special dish. For our series on resilience, KQED's Daisy Nguyen visited Pham at his home in South Pasadena where he shared memories of his family's journey, and the recipe for the dish that gave them hope. How Poetry Helps Dementia Caregivers Find Shelter from the Storm Frances Kakugawa is a firm believer that the act of caring for another human being can inspire poetry. She knows this from experience, having cared for her mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the 1990s. She says poetry was a way to take control of her mom's disease and transform the challenging and sometimes lonely experience of caregiving into something positive. Chuck Todd opens with a personal reflection on his father's connection to Vietnam before welcoming distinguished guests Ambassador John Negroponte and filmmaker Brian Knappenberger to discuss the new documentary series Turning Point and the lasting impacts of the Vietnam and Iraq wars on American politics and society. The conversation explores how Vietnam fundamentally shifted America's perception of itself, with Ambassador Negroponte sharing his firsthand experiences from the conflict. They examine how televised coverage transformed public perception of war, debate whether Vietnam was "worth it" in the context of the Cold War, and analyze why America ultimately lost the conflict. The discussion dives deep into how Vietnam became the Baby Boomers' defining generational experience, shattering trust in government institutions. They explore the military's evolution into a predominantly Republican constituency, the long-term political fallout of pardoning draft dodgers, and the devastating impact of drug use among soldiers during the conflict. The guests offer a rare perspective on how the Vietnamese people recovered from the war's effects and draw striking parallels between the withdrawals from Saigon and Afghanistan. They reflect on how these historical conflicts continue to shape modern American politics, noting that despite multiple Vietnam veterans running for president, none have ever won the office. They conclude with a thought-provoking consideration of how future generations might commemorate the 75th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, leaving listeners with a deeper understanding of how America's past military engagements continue to influence its present and future.Timeline:00:00 Introduction00:30 Chuck's personal connection to Vietnam was his dad02:30 Vietnam + Iraq still haunt American politics04:10 John Negroponte and Brian Knappenberger join the Chuck Toddcast! 06:35 What do you hope people take away from Netflix's Turning Point?08:55 Vietnam's shadow loomed over the Iraq wars 10:55 We rarely talk about the war itself, mostly just the fallout 12:40 Vietnam shifted America's perception of itself 13:25 Ambassador Negroponte's experience of being in Vietnam 16:55 Was Vietnam viewed as a proxy war at the time? 20:00 The Iraq war has the same effect on our political psyche as Vietnam23:00 How did daily press coverage affect the ability to control the narrative 25:00 Vietnam being televised drastically changed the public's perception 27:00 Embedded reporters caused new challenges for managing the narrative 28:15 Was Vietnam worth it since we won the cold war? 30:05 Why did we lose the war? 32:45 Watergate ruined historians ability to document presidents 34:15 Vietnam was the boomer's coming of age story, shook their trust in government 35:30 Many January 6th rioters were Vietnam vets37:40 The importance of equipping and training local forces 39:10 Why did the military become a Republican constituency? 40:40 Pardoning the draft dodgers had long term political impacts 42:40 The horrible impact of drug use by soldiers in Vietnam 47:40 The perspective from the side of the north? 49:10 When did the Vietnamese recover from the effects of the war? 52:25 No Vietnam vet has ever been president 55:10 The military is America's only institution that has bipartisan support 58:35 How similar/different were the withdrawals from Saigon and Afghanistan? 59:25 What will the retrospective be on the 75th anniversary of the fall of Saigon1:02:35 Chuck's thoughts on the interview

It's Thursday, May 15th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark 1,518 executions worldwide in 2024 A report from Amnesty International found there were 1,518 executions around the world last year. That's up 32 percent from 2023. Nations with the most documented executions include Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq.  These numbers do not include executions in China, North Korea, and Vietnam. China is considered to be the world's leading executioner, with potentially thousands of executions last year. All of these countries are ranked on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.  British city council no longer bans street preachers A local government district in England has backed down from banning street preachers. Back in March, Rushmoor Borough Council sought to criminalize street preaching, praying for people, singing, or handing out Bibles. Local churches, supported by the Christian Legal Centre, opposed the plan. Thankfully, the council backed down.  Jamie Broadey, a local evangelist, said, “Since we found out about the injunction and asked for prayer, we have been contacted by Christians from across the UK. The issue is uniting preachers and Christians and we are prepared to challenge this as far as need be to prevent the Gospel being criminalized.” Acts 5:29 says, “But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: ‘We ought to obey God rather than men.'” $1.2 trillion economic package with Qatar United States President Donald Trump is visiting countries in the Middle East this week. Yesterday, he signed an agreement with Qatar that would generate an economic exchange worth at least $1.2 trillion. This includes an historic sale of Boeing aircraft and GE Aerospace engines to Qatar Airways worth $96 billion.  Trump budget insists on work requirements for Medicaid This week, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives unveiled the “big, beautiful bill,” as the president calls it, to advance Trump's agenda.  The bill includes tax breaks, spending cuts, and border security.  Notably, the measure would cut $900 billion from Medicaid spending. It would also require many people to prove they are working, volunteering, or pursuing education to be eligible for Medicaid. Listen to comments by House Speaker Mike Johnson. JOHNSON: “We are protecting Medicaid for the people who need and deserve it. This program is an essential lifeline for our most vulnerable Americans: pregnant women, single mothers, low income seniors, the disabled. That's who Medicaid is intended to be for, and that's who we're protecting while we're eliminating fraud, waste and abuse to improve Medicaid. “These are reforms to restore and preserve the system so that it doesn't collapse on itself. That means ensuring illegal aliens don't get coverage meant for Americans in need. It means implementing work requirements to ensure that adults who can work, but refuse to, cannot keep cheating the system. We're going to continue to call this out.” Trump's bill defunds Planned Parenthood The “big, beautiful bill” from Republicans also paves the way for defunding Planned Parenthood. The legislation would bar federal funds from going to prohibited entities that perform abortions in many cases. The measure would also cut taxpayer funding for transgender surgeries for minors.  U.S. drug overdose deaths down Drug overdose deaths in the United States declined last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 80,000 people died from overdoses in 2024. That's down 27 percent from 2023. It's the largest drop in overdose deaths on record. However, overdose deaths are still higher now than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.  Inflation down and egg prices down Annual inflation was lower than expected last month. The consumer price index rose 0.2 percent in April. That put the 12-month inflation rate at 2.3 percent. Inflation is now the lowest it's been since 2021. Notably, egg prices fell by over 12 percent. However, they're still up about 50 percent compared to a year ago. Worldwide Bible engagement update And finally, the American Bible Society released the second chapter of its State of the Bible USA 2025 report.  The chapter looks at Bible engagement around the world.  People are most actively engaged and committed to the Bible in areas that are majority Christian like Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa.  Interestingly, people are the most receptive to new ideas and other religions in Muslim-majority areas like North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.  The greatest indifference to the Bible is found in the secular west and certain majority-Christian areas like the U.S., Western Europe, Russia, and Eastern Europe.  Of countries in the secular West, the U.S. had the highest rates of Bible usage and church attendance.  Isaiah 45:22 says, “Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the Earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, May 15th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Spotify, Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. The whole world knows Rick Springfield, the performer, songwriter, idol, rock star, actor, hitmaker....but the real Rick is an introspective deep thinker who has overcome wrenching personal and professional obstacles while remaining true to his purpose and authentic self. Rick joins us this week to talk about a remarkable career trajectory, a new album, a coffee table book and an upcoming national tour!Rick realized at an early age that he was destined to make art, setting off on a unique journey which began in the suburbs of Sydney, then took him to England during the early days of the legendary British rock scene, back to Australia where he launched his music career and then deep into Vietnam to perform for the troops during the height of the Southeast Asia conflict in the late '60s.Rick shares astonishing recollections of playing live in an active war zone, ducking for cover in the middle of a set, flying in an Apache helicopter and his nearly fatal encounter with a grenade. Rick was able to secure a record deal that brought him to America, but while his first single, Speak To The Sky, landed with a flash, he quickly fell into a personal and career rut that lasted 8 years.  Rick spent the disco era sticking true to his hook heavy power pop sound and eventually came up swinging with the instant classic Jessie's Girl, followed by 16 more top forty hits! Simultaneously, Rick's side hustle landed him on the soap that was addicting millions, General Hospital. Rick played Noah Drake who he describes as a better kisser than doctor.Rick's autobiography, Late, Late at Night is raw and honest about his struggles with bouts of deep depression. Therapy and medication have helped him and he's gratified that sharing his truth has been a beacon to others but he feels that music is the greatest comfort. That and possibly rum (use responsibly) Rick and Sammy Hagar have launched the Beach Bar Rum company. All of the above, plus a round of IMDB Roulette which takes Rick from Wonder Woman to Meryl Streep. Every so often we're going to bring you something we've been calling off-cuts and footnotes. These are extended scenes and deep dives that didn't make the final cut of the main episodes. This is also a place where we can talk about your questions and comments. So feel free to send your thoughts to htbdpodcast@gmail.com in a voice note or a quick message. This episode is a footnote. We're going to take a deeper dive into housing in the context of the Soviet Union. In the USSR and generally in the post-World War II city planning regimes, housing and new construction technologies played a major role in urban development booms. We're still feeling the impact of it to this day. The Soviet Union is a major contributor to this moment because it planned standardized residential developments to be deployed around its territories and spheres of influence. These designs were replicated so extensively that you can find them all over the world, from Poland to Iran from Estonia to Vietnam and of course in Odes[s]a. In this footnote, we'll hear from Kate Malaia, the author of Taking the Soviet Union Apart Room by Room, about the development of these residential blocks. We'll also hear from Odesiti who lived in the Soviet Union's first housing experiment, the communalki or communal apartments and later transitioned to different types of residential housing in Soviet Odes[s]a.

In this riveting episode of So There I Was, we sit down with John “Apache 2-3” Haugen, a Vietnam-era Army aviator with stories that span from the draft line in 1968 to combat flying in the Mekong Delta. John shares how he dodged a ground-pounder fate by heading to Officer Candidate School, ultimately flying slicks and accumulating over 900 hours of combat flight time. With humor, humility, and gripping detail, he recounts narrow escapes, night missions, forced landings, and his close call in a mangrove swamp that led to a surreal “third man” experience. From learning in OH-23s and flying Hueys to coordinating strikes with Cobras and Puff the Magic Dragon, John's stories highlight the courage, camaraderie, and absurdities of combat aviation in Vietnam. Bonus tales include bar tabs in Manhattan, unexpected rat-kebabs, and the elusive “Hawk's” little black book. This is an episode packed with history, grit, and a whole lot of heart!

Growers are hoping the recent rollout of a new U.S. trade deal with the United Kingdom is a sign of things to come. The agreement is the first trade pact with a new trading partner since 2012. And amid tariff uncertainty and unsettled markets, the presidential administration is signaling its desire to make trade deals with new countries a top priority. In particular, discussions are ongoing to open up new markets for corn in India and Vietnam, representing a potentially huge boost for the American corn industry. So in this episode of the Cobcast, we're talking to two top experts on international trade: Andrew Brandt, the Director of Trade Policy at the U.S. Grains Council; and Nancy Martinez, the Director of Public Policy, Trade and Biotechnology at the National Corn Growers Association. Together, we'll answer many of the distinct trade questions on growers' minds at this moment, like what are some other possible destinations for corn exports? What could potential deals look like with these new countries? And what does it all mean for folks who are just getting a crop in the ground?
