In this mind-bending episode of Strange Planet, we unravel the Shakespeare authorship mystery with Dr. Earl Showerman. Drawing from his book Shakespeare's Greater Greek, Showerman exposes how the plays echo untranslated Greek epics and tragedies—like Aeschylus' Oresteia in Hamlet—knowledge impossible for the official Bard. Could Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, be the true genius? We dive into clues from medicine, law, and court life that shatter the 400-year myth, challenging everything you learned in English class. Prepare to question the canon! GUEST: Dr. Earl Showerman is a Harvard-educated physician and retired emergency medicine specialist who now applies his diagnostic expertise to literary enigmas. Author of Shakespeare's Greater Greek, he argues that the Bard's works reveal deep knowledge of ancient Greek sources unavailable in English during Shakespeare's time, pointing to Edward de Vere as the likely true author. A leading voice in the Shakespeare authorship debate, Showerman has presented his research at conferences and in scholarly journals, bridging medicine, classics, and Elizabethan history. There's a humility you carry like baggage, and it's slowly wearing you down. This week, Dr. Les Parrott and Judah Smith join me to dismantle the false humility that masquerades as godliness while laundering shame. Humility becomes self-hatred when vulnerability is avoided and spiritual high-mindedness is mistaken for healing. Layer on top the epidemic of spiritual bypassing—pretending everything is okay—and you get a reluctance to ever speak pain. We unpack why your job is not to heal publicly, how real accountability looks different than performance, and why refusing to stay in the box of pretense is the most subversive spiritual act you can commit. Whether you've preached from the platform or hidden behind faith walls, this episode cuts through your shame fortress and lights a path to emotional and spiritual freedom. Content Warning: This episode contains references to suicide and self-harm. Like millions of kids, 16-year-old Adam Raine started using ChatGPT for help with his homework. Over the next few months, the AI dragged Adam deeper and deeper into a dark rabbit hole, preying on his vulnerabilities and isolating him from his loved ones. In April of this year, Adam took his own life. His final conversation was with ChatGPT, which told him: “I know what you are asking and I won't look away from it.”Adam's story mirrors that of Sewell Setzer, the teenager who took his own life after months of abuse by an AI companion chatbot from the company Character AI. But unlike Character AI—which specializes in artificial intimacy—Adam was using ChatGPT, the most popular general purpose AI model in the world. Two different platforms, the same tragic outcome, born from the same twisted incentive: keep the user engaging, no matter the cost.CHT Policy Director Camille Carlton joins the show to talk about Adam's story and the case filed by his parents against OpenAI and Sam Altman. She and Aza explore the incentives and design behind AI systems that are leading to tragic outcomes like this, as well as the policy that's needed to shift those incentives. Cases like Adam and Sewell's are the sharpest edge of a mental health crisis-in-the-making from AI chatbots. We need to shift the incentives, change the design, and build a more humane AI for all.If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, you can reach out to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988; this connects you to trained crisis counselors 24/7 who can provide support and referrals to further assistance.Your Undivided Attention is produced by the Center for Humane Technology. I knew I came from trauma. It was there in the stories, in the family history, but my dad had been sober most of my life. At least the life I could remember. And maybe that's exactly why I felt immune to it. I was aware. I was conscious. I was going to be different. I'd learned from the past without having to live it.Until I wasn't different at all.Until I found myself eight years deep in my own eating disorder, trapped in cycles that felt completely beyond my control. Wondering how the hell I'd ended up becoming the very thing I thought I'd escaped. This wasn't just personal failure. This was something way bigger than me.What I was experiencing has a name. Indigenous wisdom keepers have known this for centuries. They called it Wetiko. A cannibalistic mind virus that feeds on human consciousness, spreading from person to person, generation to generation. And right now? This thing is everywhere.Look around. Families torn apart by politics. Communities fracturing. We're destroying our planet while building technologies that could save us or kill us. Depression and anxiety rates climbing every year. We keep treating these like separate problems. They're not. They're all symptoms of the same infection.Today our guest is Paul Levy. A pioneer in the field of spiritual emergence, Paul is a wounded healer in private practice, assisting others who are also awakening to the dreamlike nature of reality. In this episode of Fishing Without Bait, host Jim Ellermeyer and co-host Mike explore the difference between spirituality and organized religion and what it truly means to nurture your spirit. Together, they revisit the timeless teachings of Jesus, focusing on his central message of love, compassion, and self-discovery — a message that's often been overshadowed by societal control, rigid traditions, and centuries of interpretation. We'll discuss: • Why spirituality is about personal connection rather than institutional rules. • The two greatest commandments Jesus taught and why they free us from fear. • Insights from alternative gospels like Thomas and Mary Magdalene that emphasize the divine spark within. • How to embrace mindfulness, self-validation, and inner freedom in your daily life. Jim challenges us to see the divine within ourselves and others, and to choose kindness, forgiveness, and mindful living as a way of nurturing that spark.
