Cesar Chavez, the late civil rights icon best known for his work in organizing California farm laborers, has been accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls during the 60s and 70s, according to an investigation by the New York Times. The allegations add to the figure’s complicated legacy, which includes multiple instances of extramarital affairs and secret children. The investigation says that key figures in the labor movement knew about allegations of sexual misconduct for years, but took no actions. The investigation comes one day after the United Farm Workers, the organization spawned from Chavez’s worker movement, said they would not take part in celebrations of Cesar Chavez day. Episode No. 749 features curator Mari Carmen Ramírez and Isabelle Frances McGuire. Ramírez is the curator of "Frida: The Making of an Icon" at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The exhibition reveals how Frida Kahlo went from virtually unknown to mainstream audiences at the time of her death in 1954 to becoming famed as both an artist and as a kind of celebrity icon. Among the factors it identifies are North American geopolitics, the role of culture in the promotion of nationhood, tourism, and international trade, and more. "Frida" features more than 30 works by Kahlo and 120 more by five generations of artists she inspired. It is on view at the MFAH through May 17. A fascinating catalogue was published by the MFAH in association with Yale University Press. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $60. McGuire is included in the 2026 biennial exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The show was curated by Marcela Guerrero and Drew Sawyer with Beatriz Cifuentes and Carina Martinez. It's on view through August 23. This segment was taped when McGuire was included in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago's "Descending the Staircase" exhibition in 2024. McGuire is a Chicago-based artist whose work considers the body and how our understanding of it can be filtered by video games, film, animatronics, and other technologies. The 2024 MCA Chicago exhibition marked her first inclusion in a museum exhibition; since then McGuire has shown at Artist's Space, New York, and at the Renaissance Society, Chicago. Ralph McTell is one of Britain's most enduring and respected singer-songwriters, a master storyteller whose songs have become woven into the fabric of English folk music. Born in Kent and raised in Croydon, McTell developed an early love for American blues, folk and traditional British music. As a teenager he was captivated by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, influences that shaped both his fingerstyle guitar technique and his gift for narrative songwriting.After studying at art school in the early '60s, Ralph began busking and performing in London's thriving folk clubs, quickly building a reputation for his intricate guitar work and warm, conversational stage presence. He signed with a record company in the late '60s, releasing his self-titled debut album in '68. His breakthrough came in '69 with “Streets of London,” a song inspired by his travels in Paris and London, where he encountered loneliness and poverty firsthand. The song's gentle melody and compassionate lyrics struck a deep chord. Though it became a hit in the early '70s and was later re-released to even greater success, its impact went far beyond chart positions. It became one of the most covered songs in British music history, recorded by hundreds of artists worldwide and earning McTell the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for songwriting. Carrigan Nelson was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in March of 2019 and fought for the next 69 months with this form of Pediatric Bone Cancer until her passing on Christmas Day in 2025 when she was 24 years old. Carrigan was a truly Iconic young woman who did so much for the cause of Pediatric and Adolescent Cancer and was beloved by everyone that knew her.
